Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), a class of brominated flame retardants, have gained the attention of many researchers due to their persistence in various environmental matrices. Their usage in numerous consumer products has lent credence to their ability to retard flammable gas formation and brought attention to their ubiquitous occurrence in the environment. PBDEs have been described as endocrine-disrupting chemicals because of their interference with the endocrine system in aquatic and terrestrial animals. In spite of the progress in research over the decades on PBDEs, a full understanding of the environmental behavior and fate of this contaminant is still elusive. Therefore, terrestrial contamination of PBDEs has been evaluated in conjunction with their levels of toxicity, transformation, and transport in various environmental compartments. This review provides a wider perspective of the behavior of PBDEs in the terrestrial environment. Through examining the numerous studies on the environmental contamination of PBDEs, a number of mounting concerns and data gaps have been identified. Numerous methodologies have been discussed including adsorption, catalytic, photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, photo-electrocatalytic, aerobic, and anaerobic degradation. The comparative PBDE degradation analysis suggests that the oxidative degradation pathway is the most appropriate way of wastewater treatment while the role of other soil ingredients on subsurface treatments is still under investigation. 相似文献

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with micro electron-capture detection (GCxGC-muECD) was evaluated for the separation of 125 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). From among the six column combinations that were evaluated, DB-1x007-65HT was found to be the most suitable because of: (i) the highest number of BDE congeners separated; (ii) the least decomposition of higher brominated congeners; and (iii) the most suitable maximum operating temperature. The separation of the 125 BDE congeners from five hydroxy- and two methoxy-BDEs and nine other brominated flame retardants (polybrominated biphenyls, tetrabromobisphenol-A, methyl-tetrabromobisphenol-A and hexabromocyclododecane) was also studied. Fluorinated BDEs were found to be valuable internal standards for the determination of BDEs because of their very similar physico-chemical properties and excellent separation from the parent BDEs, mainly in the second dimension. GCxGC-time-of-flight MS and GCxGC-muECD were shown to be useful tools to identify decomposition products of nona- and deca-substituted BDEs, which are formed during the GC run. Three nona-BDEs were shown to be the major decomposition products of BDE 209. 相似文献

Standard reference materials (SRMs) are valuable tools in developing and validating analytical methods to improve quality
assurance standards. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has a long history of providing environmental
SRMs with certified concentrations of organic and inorganic contaminants. Here we report on new certified and reference concentrations
for 27 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners in seven different SRMs: cod-liver oil, whale blubber, fish tissue (two
materials), mussel tissue and sediment (two materials). PBDEs were measured in these SRMs, with the lowest concentrations
measured in mussel tissue (SRM 1974b) and the highest in sediment collected from the New York/New Jersey Waterway (SRM 1944).
Comparing the relative PBDE congener concentrations within the samples, we found the biota SRMs contained primarily tetrabrominated
and pentabrominated diphenyl ethers, whereas the sediment SRMs contained primarily decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE 209). The
cod-liver oil (SRM 1588b) and whale blubber (SRM 1945) materials were also found to contain measurable concentrations of two
methoxylated PBDEs (MeO-BDEs). Certified and reference concentrations are reported for 12 PBDE congeners measured in the biota
SRMs and reference values are available for two MeO-BDEs. Results from a sediment interlaboratory comparison PBDE exercise
are available for the two sediment SRMs (1941b and 1944). 相似文献

A fast and simple method for the analysis of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in fish samples was developed using a one-step extraction and clean-up by means of pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) combined with gas chromatography-ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (GC-ITMS-MS). The selective PLE method provided to obtain ready-to-analyse extracts without any additional clean-up step, using a sorbent as fat retainer inside the PLE cell. Several PLE operating conditions, such as solvent type, extraction temperature and time, number of cycles and type of fat retainer, were studied. Using Florisil as fat retainer, maximum recoveries of PBDEs (83-108%) with minimum presence of matrix-interfering compounds were obtained using a mixture of n-hexane:dichloromethane 90:10 (v/v) as solvent, an extraction temperature of 100 °C and a static extraction time of 5 min in combination with three static cycles. Quality parameters of the method were established using standards and fish samples. Limits of detection and quantification ranged from 10 to 34 pg g−1 wet weight and between 34 and 68 pg g−1 wet weight, respectively. In addition, good linearity (between 1 and 500 ng ml−1) and high precision (RSD % < 15%) were achieved. The method was validated using the standard reference material SRM-1945 (whale blubber) and was then applied to the analysis of PBDEs in fish samples. 相似文献

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), a class of brominated flame retardants, are used in a variety of consumer products being produced in notable quantities. PBDEs have been detected in environmental samples. In recent years, a marked increase in the levels of PBDEs in human biological tissues and fluids, especially breast milk, has been observed in some countries. As for other persistent organic pollutants (POPs), dietary intake is very probably the main route of exposure to PBDEs for the general population. This paper reviews the state of the science regarding human exposure to PBDEs through the diet. Because of the scarce information about it, it is concluded that studies focused on determining PBDE exposure for the population of a number of countries are clearly required. The correlation of PBDE body burdens and dietary intake of PBDEs are also necessary. 相似文献

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been measured for the first time in three different indoor dust Standard Reference
Materials (SRMs) prepared by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Two of these, SRM 2583 (Trace Elements
in Indoor Dust) and SRM 2584 (Trace Elements in Indoor Dust), have been certified previously for lead and other inorganic
constituents. A third, SRM 2585 (Organics in Indoor Dust), is a new indoor dust reference material prepared by NIST which
will be certified for various organic compounds (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls)
in 2005 including certified concentrations for 16 individual PBDE congeners and reference values for an additional three PBDE
congeners. Dust SRMs were analyzed for 30 PBDE congeners using high-resolution gas chromatography combined with low-resolution
mass spectrometry operated in both negative chemical ionization (GC/ECNI–MS) and electron impact ionization (GC/EI–MS) modes.
Sensitivity was an order of magnitude higher using GC/ECNI–MS relative to GC/EI–MS. These SRMs have been characterized and
compared to the three PBDE commercial products (pentaBDE, octaBDE and decaBDE). PentaBDE and DecaBDE were present in all three
SRMs and were the dominant commercial products, making up approximately 33% and 58%, respectively. Recent studies suggest
that house dust may be a leading source of human exposure to PBDEs. These SRMs are the first reference materials with certified
concentrations for PBDEs, which will aid in validating future measurements of PBDEs in house dust and other similar matrices.

Soil samples collected from an electronic waste recycling site were prepared by using Soxhlet extraction and multiple-step column chromatographic clean-up. Gas chromatography/ion trap mass spectrometry method was developed to determine polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the sample extracts. The method performance was evaluated by the recovery of 13C-labeled internal standards and by analyzing quality assurance and quality control samples. Relative error and relative standard deviation obtained from the analysis of duplicated samples and spiked matrix were better than 10%. PBDEs were detected in the field soil samples collected from an e-wastes disposal site at levels from low parts-per-billions to 600 parts-per-billions. 相似文献

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a group of persistent organic pollutants. They are used as flame retardants in plastics, paints, varnishes and textile materials. PBDEs pose great risk to the environment because of their high persistence and ability to get into the environment easily due to the lack of chemical bonds with the matrix of materials, to which they are added. Global research studies confirmed the occurrence of those compounds in the majority of elements of water and land environment. Analysis of PBDEs in environmental samples is one of the specific analytical methods of criteria that comprise low detection limits and high selectivity. The analysis of PBDEs in environmental samples is one of the specific analytical methods, in which the main criteria are low detection limits and high selectivity. In this article, a literature review of methods for environmental sample preparation and analysis of the PBDE content was presented. The article discusses the potential of modern extraction techniques such as: solid-phase microextraction, single-drop microextraction, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction, microwave-assisted extraction, cloud point extraction, hollow fibre-liquid phase microextraction and others for the separation of PBDEs from environmental samples with a complex matrix. Among the methods for qualitative and quantitative determination of PBDEs, a particular focus was put on gas chromatography/mass spectrometry with various injection techniques and different types of sample ionisation. 相似文献

In this paper, a sensitive biotin–streptavidin (BS)-ELISA was developed for determining the polybrominated diphenyl ethers in PM2.5. For establishing this proposed BS-ELISA, we prepared the biotinylated antibody primarily. And for reducing the background interference, some in?uencing factors and procedures for this immunoassay were also discussed and optimised. Under the optimal conditions, the IC50 = 0.53 ng/mL; IC10 was 0.002 ng/mL; and the results were almost consistent with those using the gas chromatography and electron capture detection (GC-ECD). Less procedures and simpler sample preparation were required for this method compared with the GC-ECD. The results showed that the highest value of BDE-47 concentration occurred in December, which might re?ect the combination of heating and industrial pollution. In our analysis, we studied the Pearson correlations between BDE-47/PM2.5 and gaseous pollutants (such as NO2, SO2, CO, O3, PM10 and PM2.5). BDE-47 showed a higher correlation with NO2 than that with PM10, PM2.5 and SO2, which implied that the BDE-47 emission process might be accompanied by the emission of NO2. Moreover, during the Spring Festival, the concentration of BDE-47 in PM2.5 decreased significantly, whereas the PM2.5 changed little. This suggested factories and vehicles might be the major contributors to BDE-47 emissions (but not to PM2.5). 相似文献

Determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in human hair by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A rapid analytical method has been developed for the determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in human hair. PBDEs were determined by gas chromatography with electron ionization mass spectrometric detection in the selected ion monitoring mode (GC-MS-SIM). A 200 mg amount of hair samples was overnight digested in 3N HCl and then PBDEs extracted with n-hexane. After clean up of extracts in a Florisil column, PBDEs were analyzed by GC-MS. The method has been validated by spiking human hair at five concentration levels, in the range from 5 to 25 ng/g for most compounds, and PBDEs were quantified using labelled compounds as internal standards. Recoveries of PBDEs were higher than 90%, repeatability was equal or lower than 12.5%, and reproducibility lower than 14%, expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD). Limits of detection (LOD) were in the range 0.08-0.9 ng/g and limits of quantification (LOQ) were between 0.27 and 3.0 ng/g. This method was applied to the determination of PBDEs in hair samples from 16 individuals and 5 PBDE congeners were detected in most of the samples. BDE-209 was the dominant compound found, followed by BDE-47, BDE-99, BDE-100, and BDE-190. BDE-209 was found in 12 out of 16 hair samples, and the total levels of PBDEs ranged from 1.4 to 19.9 ng/g. 相似文献

Determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in marine biological tissues using microwave-assisted extraction 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Growing concern on the environmental impact of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) has created the need for rapid and quality assured analytical methods to quantify PBDEs in a spectrum of matrix types. This study presents the first validated method for the quantification of major PBDE congeners (47, 99 and 100) in marine biological tissues using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). The recovery of polychlorinated biphenyls and various organochlorine pesticides has also been ascertained. Analytical accuracy, precision, limits of detection and cleanup efficiency were evaluated for PBDE congeners, and empirical data justifies the use of MAE for the extraction and analysis of PBDEs in biological matrices. MAE was also compared to Soxhlet extraction efficiency for PBDEs in the standard reference materials SRM2978 and SRM1588a and gave comparable results (<15% variation). 相似文献

A method has been developed for gas chromatographic peak recognition of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) under different temperature programs. On the basis of an identification database of retention parameters (A, B values) of gas chromatography and retention times of the selected internal standards, the retention times of BDEs can be accurately estimated. In comparison with the experimental retention values, the predicted retention times have been proved to be very accurate. In addition, owing to only a part of BDE analytical standards are available, using 40 BDEs as a training set, the quantitative relationship between retention parameters of BDEs and molecular connectivity indexes has been found. The correlation coefficients are greater than 0.997. The A, B values of all the remaining 169 BDE congeners have been predicted. 相似文献
