The interfacial properties of amphiphilic linear diblock copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PEO-b-PCL) were studied at the air-water (A/W) interface by surface pressure measurements (isotherms and hysteresis experiments). The resulting Langmuir monolayers were transferred onto mica substrates and the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film morphologies were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). All block copolymers had the same PEO segment (Mn = 2670 g/mol) and different PCL chain lengths (Mn = 1270; 2110; 3110 and 4010 g/mol). Isothermal characterization of the block copolymer samples indicated the presence of three distinct phase transitions around 6.5, 10.5, and 13.5 mN/m. The phase transitions at 6.5 and 13.5 mN/m correspond to the dissolution of the PEO segments in the water subphase and crystallization of the PCL blocks above the interface similarly as for the corresponding homopolymers, respectively. The phase transition at 10.5 mN/m was not observed for the homopolymers alone or for their blends and arises from a brush formation of the PEO segments anchored underneath the adsorbed hydrophobic PCL segments. AFM analysis confirmed the presence of PCL crystals in the LB films with unusual hairlike/needlelike architectures significantly different from those obtained for PCL homopolymers.  相似文献

PEE212-PEO112 diblock copolymer monolayers are studied at the air/water interface. At large molecular areas, with X-ray reflectivity, PEE domains are observed, which are partly immersed into the water. The domain thickness increases on compression (28 to 40 A). With off-specular X-ray reflectivity, an average domain radius of 750 A is found, but there are also smaller domains. Due to these space constraints, most PEO blocks form a brush beneath the PEE domains. Only a few PEO blocks form a corona surrounding the domains and adsorb flatly onto the air/water interface. The PEO desorption transition is observed at the typical pressure of 9 mN/m, when the flatly adsorbed PEO is compressed at a domain fraction of 95%. It occurs at 6 A2/EO monomer, about half the value found for lipopolymers or diblock copolymers with NPEE approximately NPEO or NPEE < NPEO. Apparently, the thickness of the PEE domains is determined by the forces from the two interfaces, not by the PEO block, for which flat adsorption beneath the domain would be more favorable instead of formation of a PEO brush.  相似文献

This paper examines the influences of solvent evaporation and atmosphere humidity on self-assembling structures and thin-film microscopic morphologies of amphiphilic rod-coil block oligomers (EOnOPV) containing conjugated oligo(phenylene vinylene) dimer (OPV) coupled to poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO; n, the average number of ethylene oxides, is 16, 12, 7, and 3, respectively) on hydrophilic substrates. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), UV-vis absorption, and small angle X-ray diffraction are employed to investigate the thin-film morphology and structure. Solvent evaporation and atmosphere humidity are found to exert a strong influence on thin-film morphology and structure. Under the condition of quick evaporation and dry atmosphere, all EOnOPV oligomers form the monolayer islands. Increasing the solute volume, both EO16OPV and EO12OPV oligomers can form the polar lamellas with a head-to-tail packing arrangement. Under the condition of slow evaporation and humid atmosphere, EO16OPV and EO12OPV may self-assembly into curvy nanoribbons with well-defined width and curvature radii on mica, while EO7OPV and EO3OPV with the shorter PEO coils do not form. A symmetric bilayer structure for the ribbons is proposed. Plausible reasons for the variation in thin-film morphology are discussed, based on the results obtained from investigation of PEO coil length, solvent evaporation, and atmosphere humidity effects.  相似文献

Self-assembly of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) five-arm stars (PEO-b-PCL) was studied at the air/water (A/W) interface. The block copolymers consist of a hydrophilic PEO core with hydrophobic PCL chains at the star periphery. All the polymers have the same number of ethylene oxide repeat units (9 per arm), and the number of epsilon-caprolactone repeat units ranges from 0 to 18 per arm. The Langmuir monolayers were analyzed by surface pressure/mean molecular area isotherms, compression-expansion hysteresis experiments, and isobaric relaxation measurements, and the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films' morphologies were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). PCL homopolymers crystallize directly at the A/W interface in a narrow surface pressure range (11-15 mN/m). In the same pressure region, the star-shaped block copolymers undergo a phase transition corresponding to the collapse and the crystallization of the PCL chains as shown by the presence of a pseudoplateau in the isotherms. The LB films were prepared by transferring the Langmuir monolayers onto mica substrates at various surface pressures. AFM imaging confirmed the formation of PCL crystals in the LB monolayers of the PCL homopolymers and of the copolymers, but also showed that the PCL segments can undergo additional crystallization after monolayer transfer during water evaporation. The PCL crystal morphologies were also strongly influenced by the surface pressure and by the PEO segments.  相似文献

Isotherms of monolayers of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and polystyrene (PS) triblock copolymers spread at the air/water interface were obtained by film balance technique. In a low concentration regime, the PEO segments surrounding the PS cores behave the same way as in monolayers of PEO homopolymers. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films prepared by transferring the monolayers onto mica at various surface pressures were analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results reveal that these block copolymers form micelles at the air/water interface. Within the micelles, the PS blocks act as anchoring structures at the interface. In several cases, aggregation patterns were modified by the dewetting processes that occur in Langmuir-Blodgett films transferred to solid substrates. High transfer surface pressures and metastable states favored these changes in morphology. A flowerlike surface micelle model is proposed to explain the organization of the surface circular micelles. The model can be generalized and applied to diblock copolymers as well. The model permits prediction of the aggregation number and the size of circular surface micelles formed by PEO/PS block copolymers at the air/water interface.  相似文献

In this paper, in situ atomic force microscopy has been used to investigate the micellization and self-assembling structure of an amphiphilic rod-coil block oligomer (EO16OPV) containing a conjugated oligo(phenylene vinylene) dimer and poly(ethylene oxide) at the mica-water interface. It is found that EO16OPV molecules have strong adsorption and aggregation properties on mica. In the wide concentration range from above the critical micelle concentration (cmc) to far below the cmc, a closely packed layer of stripe-like micelles with two preferred orientations can be formed at the mica-water interface. A cylindrical micelle structure for the stripes is proposed. We demonstrate that the stripe-like micelles formed on mica originate from different micellization processes at solution concentrations above and below the cmc. The origins of the strong micellization properties and oriented arrangement of the stripes are also discussed.  相似文献

The interaction between ganglioside GM1 (GM1) and --dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) in mixed monolayers was investigated using surface pressure measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the effects of GM1, surface pressure and temperature on the properties of the membranes were examined. Mixed GM1/DPPC monolayers were deposited on mica using the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique for AFM. GM1 and DPPC were miscible below the 0.2 mole fraction of GM1 and there was attractive interaction between GM1 and DPPC. The AFM images for the GM1/DPPC monolayers (XGM1 < 0.2) at 30 mN m−1 and 25 °C indicated a percolation pattern which means a micro phase separation: namely, the mixed film composed of GM1 and DPPC phase-separated from the DPPC liquid-condensed film. The AFM images for the mixed monolayers at 33 mN m−1 indicated a specific morphology when the surface pressure was varied from 30 to 40 mN m−1. The percolation pattern in the AFM image at 25 °C came to be destroyed with increasing temperature and completely disappeared at 45 °C. The change in the morphology of mixed GM1/DPPC monolayers on varying the surface pressure and temperature is thought to be related to signal transduction and a preventive mechanism against viral infections in the human body.  相似文献

Dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), one of the main constituents of lung surfactant is mainly responsible for reduction of surface tension to near 0 mN/m during expiration, resisting alveolar collapse. Other unsaturated phospholipids like palmitoyloleoyl phosphatidylglycerol (PG), palmitoyloleoyl phosphatidylcholine (POPC) and neutral lipids help in adsorption of lung surfactant to the air-aqueous interface. Lung surfactant lipids may interact with plasma proteins and hematological agents flooding the alveoli in diseased states. In this study, we evaluated the effects of albumin and erythrocyte membranes on spread films of DPPC alone and mixtures of DPPC with each of PG, POPC, palmitoyloleoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), cholesterol (CHOL) and palmitic acid (PA) in 9:1 molar ratios. Surface tension-area isotherms were recorded using a Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) trough at 37 degrees C with 0.9% saline as the sub-phase. In the presence of erythrocyte membranes, DPPC and DPPC+PA monolayers reached minimum surface tensions of 7.3+/-0.9 and 9.6+/-1.4 mN/m, respectively. Other lipid combinations reached significantly higher minimum surface tensions >18 mN/m in presence of membranes (Newman Keul's test, p<0.05). The relative susceptibility to membrane inhibition was [(DPPC+PG, 7:3)=(DPPC+PG, 9:1)=(DPPC+POPC)=(DPPC+PE)=(DPPC+CHOL)]>[(DPPC+PA)=(DPPC)]. The differential response was more pronounced in case of albumin with DPPC and DPPC+PA monolayers reaching minimum surface tensions less than 2.4 mN/m in presence of albumin, whereas DPPC+PG and DPPC+POPC reached minimum surface tensions of around 20 mN/m in presence of albumin. Descending order of susceptibility of the spread monolayers of lipid mixtures to albumin destabilization was as follows: [(DPPC+PG, 7:3)=(DPPC+PG, 9:1)=(DPPC+POPC)]>[(DPPC+PE)=(DPPC+CHOL)]>[(DPPC+PA)=(DPPC)] The increase in minimum surface tension in presence of albumin and erythrocyte membranes was accompanied by sudden increases in compressibility at surface tensions of 15-30 mN/m. This suggests a monolayer destabilization and could be indicative of phase transitions in the mixed lipid films due to the presence of the hydrophobic constituents of erythrocyte membranes.  相似文献

The rate of domain growth in phase-separated, mixed Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of arachidic acid, C(19)H(39)COOH (AA) and perfluorotetradecanoic acid, C(13)F(27)COOH (PA) was tracked via atomic force microscope measurements. The growth rate of domains comprised of phase-separated AA was consistent with that predicted by the Lifshitz-Slyozov model for diffusion-limited Ostwald ripening. In addition to Ostwald ripening, some evidence for domain coalescence was also observed when LB films were deposited under conditions of low temperature and short incubation times, though this tendency disappeared at higher deposition temperatures.  相似文献

We systematically describe the striped pattern formation of the mixed monolayers of 1,2-di(2,4-octadecadienoyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOEPC) and l-alpha-dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) from the liquid expanded (LE) phase onto a mica surface by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) transfer. The addition of the second component, DOEPC, strongly affects the formation of DPPC stripe patterns. When the molar ratio of DPPC and DOEPC is 1:0.1, the horizontal stripes dominate, while in the case of pure DPPC monolayer, there are three kinds of patterns: horizontal stripes, grids, and vertical stripes. The width and periodicity of stripes formed from the mixed monolayers are ca. 4-5 times smaller than those formed from pure DPPC patterns at the same transfer conditions, while the widths of channels are similar. A phase shift of substrate-mediated microphase separation in the two-component system during LB transfer is considered to be the mechanism for the influence of the second component on the formation of DPPC stripe patterns.  相似文献

It has recently been found that monodisperse surface micelles (hemimicelles) were formed in Langmuir monolayers of the semifluorinated alkane C8F17C16H33 (F8H16) after transfer onto silicon wafers. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction studies have demonstrated that compression of mixed Langmuir monolayers made from combinations of dipalmitoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE) and diblock F8H16 in various molar ratios resulted in the complete expulsion of the diblock molecule at high surface pressure. F8H16 then formed a second layer on top of a DPPE-only monolayer, demonstrating a novel type of reversible, pressure-induced, vertical phase separation. Using atomic force microscopy and X-ray reflectivity, we show now that mixed DPPE/F8H16 (1:1.3) Langmuir-Blodgett films transferred onto silicon wafers below 10 mN m(-1) are laterally phase separated and consist of domains of F8H16 surface micelles in coexistence with a monolayer of DPPE. The density of the network of F8H16 surface micelles increases when the surface pressure of transfer increases. Around 10 mN m(-1), the F8H16 surface micelles start to glide on the DPPE monolayer, progressively overlying it, until total coverage is achieved.  相似文献

The metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) from the well-organized monolayers of two newly prepared long-chain alkylamine derivatives of nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD-C16 and NBD-C18) deposited on silver island films (SIFs) has been investigated. The NBD derivatives were conveniently prepared by using a single step procedure in quantitative yields. The monolayers of the probes on SIFs as well as on bare-glass slides were obtained by using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. Orientation of the NBD probe molecule in LB monolayer film was measured with polarized absorption spectroscopy. The observed tilt angle of the probe transition dipole moment with respect to the surface normal of approximately 67-68 degrees was evaluated. We observed that the NBD monolayers deposited in close proximity to silver islands show about a 16-fold increase in fluorescence intensity and shortened fluorescence lifetime compared to those on bare-glass, which are due to metal enhanced fluorescence. On the other hand, the corresponding MEF from randomly oriented film obtained by using spin coating of the probes on SIFs was only 2.5-fold. Further, we deposited mixed monolayers of NBD-C16 or NBD-C18 with various molar ratios of stearic acid to understand the polarity effect on MEF. Interestingly, we found a consistent increase in MEF efficiency with increasing molar ratio of stearic acid. Along with MEF, we also found a continuous blue-shift in emission band maxima of the probes with an increasing molar ratio of stearic acid. The observed increase in MEF efficiency is justified based on cooperative effects of (1) the modulations in electronic density of the surface plasmon absorption band of SIFs and (2) defined probe orientation that might lead to preferential excitation.  相似文献

The immobilization of enzymes in organized two-dimensional matrices is a key requirement for many biotechnological applications. In this paper, we used the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique to obtain controlled architectures of urease immobilized in solid supports, whose physicochemical properties were investigated in detail. Urease molecules were adsorbed at the air-water interface and incorporated into Langmuir monolayers of the phospholipid dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl glycerol (DPPG). Incorporation of urease made DPPG monolayers more flexible and caused the reduction of the equilibrium and dynamic elasticity of the film. Urease and DPPG-urease mixed monolayers could be transferred onto solid substrates, forming LB films. A close packing arrangement of urease was obtained, especially in the mixed LB films, which was inferred with nanogravimetry and electrochemistry measurements. From the blocking effect of the LB films deposited onto indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates, the electrochemical properties of the LB films pointed to a charge transport controlled by the lipid architecture.  相似文献

The role of dipalmitoylphosphatic acid (DPPA) as a transfer promoter to enhance the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition of a dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) monolayer at air/liquid interfaces was investigated, and the effects of Ca2+ ions in the subphase were discussed. The miscibility of the two components at air/liquid interfaces was evaluated by surface pressure-area per molecule isotherms, thermodynamic analysis, and by the direct observation of Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). Multilayer LB deposition behavior of the mixed DPPA/DPPC monolayers was then studied by transferring the monolayers onto hydrophilic glass plates at a surface pressure of 30 mN/m. The results showed that the two components, DPPA and DPPC, were miscible in a monolayer on both subphases of pure water and 0.2 mM CaCl2 solution. However, an exception occurs between X(DPPA)=0.2 and 0.5 at air/CaCl2-solution interface, where a partially miscible monolayer with phase separation may occur. Negative deviations in the excess area analysis were found for the mixed monolayer system, indicating the existence of attractive interactions between DPPA and DPPC molecules in the monolayers. The monolayers were stable at the surface pressure of 30 mN/m for the following LB deposition as evaluated from the area relaxation behavior. It was found that the presence of Ca2+ ions had a stabilization effect for DPPA-rich monolayers, probably due to the association of negatively charged DPPA molecules with Ca2+ ions. Moreover, the Ca2+ ions may enhance the adhesion of DPPA polar groups to a glass surface and the interactions between DPPA polar groups in the multilayer LB film structure. As a result, Y-type multilayer LB films containing DPPC could be fabricated from the mixed DPPA/DPPC monolayers with the presence of Ca2+ ions.  相似文献

This paper reports the fabrication and characterization of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films incorporating an oligo(phenylene-ethynylene) (OPE) derivative, namely, 4-[4-(4-hexyloxyphenylethynyl)-phenylethynyl]-benzoic acid (HBPEB). Conditions appropriate for deposition of monolayers of HBPEB at the air-water interface have been established and the resulting Langmuir films characterized by a combination of surface pressure and surface potential versus area per molecule isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy, and ultraviolet reflection spectroscopy. The Langmuir films are readily transferred onto solid substrates, and one-layer LB films transferred at several surface pressures onto mica substrates have been analyzed by means of atomic force microscopy, from which it can be concluded that 14 mN/m is an optimum surface pressure of transference, giving well-ordered homogeneous films without three-dimensional defects and a low surface roughness. The optical and emissive properties of the LB films have been determined with significant blue-shifted absorption spectra indicating formation of two-dimensional H aggregates and a Stokes shift illustrating the effects of the solid-like environment on the molecular chromophore.  相似文献

Vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy was applied to study the phase transitions of the mixed monolayers of l-alpha-distearoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DSPE) and DSPE covalently coupled with poly(ethylene oxide) at the amino head group (DSPE-EO(45), DSPE with 45 ethylene oxide monomers) at the air-water interface. The SFG spectra were measured for the mixed monolayers with the mole fractions of DSPE-EO(45) of 0, 1.3, 4.5, 9.0, 12.5, and 16.7% at the surface pressures of 5, 15, and 35 mN/m. The monolayer compression isotherms indicated that the mixed monolayers at 5, 15, are 35 mN/m are mainly in the so-called "pancake", "mushroom", and "brush" states, respectively. The SFG spectra in the OH stretching vibration region give rise to SFG bands near 3200 and 3400 cm(-1). The mean molecular amplitude of the former band due to the OH stretching of the "icelike" water molecules associated mainly with the hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chains, exhibits appreciable decrease on compression of the mixed monolayers from 5 to 15 mN/m. The result corroborates the model for the pancake-mushroom transition, which presumes the dissolution of the PEO chains from the air-water interface to the water subphase. Further compression of the mixed monolayers to 35 mN/m causes a slight decrease of the line amplitude, which can be explained by considering a squeezing out of water molecules from the hydrophilic groups of DSPE-EO(45) in the brush state, where the PEO chains strongly interact with each other to form a tight binding state of the hydrophilic groups. The relative intensities of the SFG bands due to the CH3 asymmetric and symmetric vibrations were used to estimate the tilt angles of the terminal methyl group of DSPE, indicating that the angle increases with increasing the mole fraction of DSPE-EO(45). The angles almost saturate at the mole fraction larger than 10%, the saturation angle being nearly 90 degrees at 5 mN/m, ca. 60 degrees at 15 mN/m, and ca. 47 degrees at 35 mN/ m. Then, the introduction of the hydrophilic PEO head group causes a large tilting of the alkyl groups of DEPE in the mixed monolayers.  相似文献
