In a conventional ultrasonic polar scan (UPS) experiment, the amplitude or time-of-flight-diffraction (TOFD) values of the transmitted and/or reflected acoustic pulse are recorded for a wide range of incidence angles, in view of gaining knowledge about the elastic properties at the insonified material spot. Here we apply the pulsed UPS technique and investigate the backscattered signal, resulting in the ultrasonic backscatter polar scan (UBPS). It is shown that a UPBS contains a blueprint of geometrically related features of the insonified material spot which can be of particular interest for various industrial applications. We applied the UBPS for (i) the determination of the stacking sequence of a cross-ply composite laminate, (ii) the semi-quantification of a multidirectional microscopic surface corrugation, (iii) the detection of corrosion in an early stage as well as (iv) the detection and the localization of a closed surface breaking crack.  相似文献

A mathematical model for the hydrogen embrittlement of hydride forming metals has been developed. The model takes into account the coupling of the operating physical processes, namely: (i) hydrogen diffusion, (ii) hydride precipitation, (iii) non-mechanical energy flow and (iv) hydride/solid-solution deformation. Material damage and crack growth are also simulated by using de-cohesion model, which takes into account the time variation of energy of de-cohesion, due to the time-dependent process of hydride precipitation. The bulk of the material, outside the de-cohesion layer, is assumed to behave elastically. The hydrogen embrittlement model has been implemented numerically into a finite element framework and tested successfully against experimental data and analytical solutions on hydrogen thermal transport (in: Wunderlich, W. (Ed.), Proceedings of the European Conference on Computational Mechanics, Munich, Germany, 1999, J. Nucl. Mater. (2000a) 279 (2-3) 273). The model has been used for the simulation of Zircaloy-2 hydrogen embrittlement and delayed hydride cracking initiation in (i) a boundary layer problem of a semi-infinite crack, under mode I loading and constant temperature, and (ii) a cracked plate, under tensile stress and temperature gradient. The initial and boundary conditions in case (ii) are those encountered in the fuel cladding of light water reactors, during operation. The effects of near-tip stress intensification as well as of temperature gradient on hydride precipitation and material damage have been studied. The numerical simulation predicts hydride precipitation at a small distance from the crack-tip. When the remote loading is sufficient, the near-tip hydrides fracture. Thus a microcrack is generated, which is separated from the main crack by a ductile ligament, in agreement with experimental observations.  相似文献

Samples of cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and ethyl cellulose (EC) are contrasted with commercial (atactic) polystyrene (PS) and isotactic polypropylene (PP) in studies of (i) differential scanning calorimetry, (ii) quiescent polarized light microscopy (iii) optical retardation variation following an imposed stress field. It is concluced that HPC and EC are thermotropic liquid crystals, while CAB behaves in a manner similar to a vitrifying isotropic melt such as PS. Studies of the shear viscosity and dynamic viscosity indicate HPC and EC exhibit yield values while CAB shows a zero shear viscosity and Vinogradov-Malkin reduced viscosity curve identical to PS. The normal stress and extrudate swell behavior of CAB are also similar to PS. The HPC and EC exhibit substantially reduced extrudate swell. Measurement of the principal normal stress difference behavior of the HPC melt is troubled by the existence of yield values.  相似文献

Highly concentrated oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion stabilised by means of gluten and soya protein isolate (SPI) at low pH have been characterized by means of linear dynamic viscoelasticity and droplet size distribution analysis (DSD). The microstructure of these emulsions has been characterized at a colloidal level by using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and light microscopy (LM). These emulsions always exhibited a behaviour characteristic of highly flocculated emulsions with a mechanical spectrum showing a well-developed plateau region. DSD results generally showed log normal bimodal profiles. Microstructure images revealed occurrence of a close packing of droplets with a broad distribution of sizes participating in the formation of a three dimensional flocculated network. The Mason model of elasticity of compressed emulsions has been used to correlate viscoelastic and microstructural parameters giving adequate fitting but underestimating the elastic properties obtained for the highest concentration of gluten. These deviations may be explained in terms of an enhancement of the elastic network formed in the aqueous phase in which the glutenin fraction must play an important role. The results from a systematic study of the response of a Ti–6Al–4V alloy under quasi-static and dynamic loading, at different strain rates and temperatures, are presented. The correlations and predictions using modified Khan–Huang–Liang (KHL) viscoplastic constitutive model are compared with those from Johnson–Cook (JC) model and experimental observations for this strain rate and temperature-dependent material. Overall, KHL model correlations and predictions are shown to be much closer to the observed responses, than the corresponding JC model predictions and correlations. Similar trend has been demonstrated for other titanium alloys using published experimental data [Mech. Mater. 33(8) (2001) 425; J. Mech. Phys. Solids 47(5) (1999) 1157].  相似文献

Stiction in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) has been a major failure mode ever since the advent of surface micromachining in the 80s of the last century due to large surfacearea-to-volume ratio. Even now when solutions to this problem are emerging, such as self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and other measures, stiction remains one of the most catastrophic failure modes in MEMS. A review is presented in this paper on stiction and anti-stiction in MEMS and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). First, some new experimental observations of stiction in radio frequency (RF) MEMS switch and micromachined accelerometers are presented. Second, some criteria for stiction of microstructures in MEMS and NEMS due to surface forces (such as capillary, electrostatic, van der Waals, Casimir forces, etc.) are reviewed. The influence of surface roughness and environmental conditions (relative humidity and temperature) on stiction are also discussed. As hydrophobic films, the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) turn out able to prevent release-related stiction effectively. The anti-stiction of SAMs in MEMS is reviewed in the last part. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of parity on Down syndrome (DS). METHODS: The study was conducted on data from Northeast Italy (NEI) (1981-1996) and Sicily (ISMAC) (1991-1996) Congenital Malformation Registries. In these areas, all DS births are recorded and confirmed by chromosomal analysis; the NEI Registry also registers pregnancy terminations (TOPs) after prenatal diagnosis of DS. In order to estimate the effect of parity independently of the mother's age and to reduce the truncation effect, different age classes and three classes of parity (1, 2-4, >4) were defined. RESULTS: The study sample consisted of 1,088 consecutive newborns and 169 consecutive fetuses affected by DS. In both NEI and ISMAC samples, we found a significantly increased risk of having a DS child for multiparas > or =35 years of age. In the NEI sample, the inclusion of TOP data did not seem to modify this finding. In the ISMAC sample, a significantly reduced risk for primiparas was found at all ages. CONCLUSIONS: Our data confirm a higher risk of having a DS child in women with parity >4. As this effect is evident only in women > or =35 years age, its practical impact is null because these women are usually offered prenatal diagnosis in any case. However, the mechanisms involved, if this association is true, are very intriguing and the observation should stimulate scientific studies allowing a better knowledge of the nondisjunction mechanism.  相似文献

The finite element method [FEM] of analysis previously developed for prediction of rigid wheel-soil interaction is improved and extended to take into account (a) the effect of flexibility of tyre carcass where energy losses now occur in development of mobility, (b) a simpler requirement for specification of boundary condition using input loading, and (c) normal and tangential load stress from the tyre distributed across the tyre-soil interface and varying with slip. The comparisons of analytically computed (predicted) drawbar pull with actual experimentally obtained drawbar pull results for tests in three types of tyres show good correlations. The effect of inflation pressure on development of tyre deformation energy losses can be seen from the analytically computed values.  相似文献

We consider equations and algorithms describing the operation of strapdown inertial navigation systems (SINS) intended for determining the inertial attitude parameters (the Rodrigues–Hamilton (Euler) parameters) and the apparent velocity of a moving object. The construction of these equations and algorithms is based on the Kotelnikov–Study transference principle, Hamiltonian quaternions and Clifford biquaternions, and differential equations in four-dimensional (quaternion and biquaternion) orthogonal operators.  相似文献

A method is reported here for calculating unsteady aerodynamics of hovering and flapping airfoil for two-dimensional flow via the following improved methodologies: (a) a correct formulation of the problem using stream function (ψ) and vorticity (ω) as dependent variables; (b) calculating loads and moment by a new method to solve the governing pressure Poisson equation (PPE) in a truncated part of the computational domain on a nonstaggered grid; (c) accurate solution using high accuracy compact difference scheme for the vorticity transport equation (VTE) and (d) accelerating the computations by using a high-order filter after each time step of integration. These have been used to solve Navier–Stokes equation for flow past flapping and hovering NACA 0014 and 0015 airfoils at typical Reynolds numbers relevant to the study of unsteady aerodynamics of micro air vehicle (MAV) and insect/bird flight.  相似文献

A new model of porous electrodes based on the Gibbs free energy is developed, in which lithium-ion(Liion) diffusion, diffusion-induced stress(DIS), Butler–Volmer(BV) reaction kinetics, and size polydispersity of electrode particles are considered. The influence of BV reaction kinetics and concentration-dependent exchange current density(ECD) on concentration profile and DIS evolution are numerically investigated. BV reaction kinetics leads to a decrease in Li-ion concentration and DIS. In addition, concentrationdependent ECD results in a decrease in Li-ion concentration and an increase in DIS. Size polydispersity of electrode particles significantly affects the concentration profile and DIS.Optimal macroscopic state of charge(SOC) should consider the influence of the microscopic SOC values and mass fractions of differently sized particles.  相似文献

In this contribution, the deformational and configurational mechanics of (elastic) discrete atomistic systems in relation to their continuum counterparts are considered for the quasi-static case. Thereby, we firstly investigate the basic unconstrained case in the sense of lattice statics as a reference. Based on these results, we consider two Cauchy-Born-type constraints that (locally) describe the change of the position of atoms (between the material and the spatial configuration) in terms of either a linear or a quadratic map, respectively. Insertion of these kinematic constraints into the variation of the total potential energy of the unconstrained case renders eventually Cauchy-Born-type definitions for atomistic stresses and hyperstresses, for both deformational and configurational cases. In the continuum limit, these are the relevant continuum stresses and hyperstresses contributing to the local force balances of first- (classical) and second-order (non-classical) gradient continua (here first- and second-order gradient refers to the highest gradient of the deformation map characterizing the kinematics). It is emphasized that the atomistic and the Cauchy-Born-type configurational quantities represent novel and unexpected contributions. Among other things, they may be useful in assessing the singular or non-singular character of deformation fields at crack tips and comparing numerical estimates resulting from atomistic simulations with analytical predictions resulting from solutions of related boundary value problems for gradient continua.  相似文献

Pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) has the potential as a diagnostic tool for pressure measurement in high Knudsen number regime because it works as a so-called “molecular sensor”. However, there are few reports concerning application of PSP to micro-devices, because conventional PSPs are too thick owing to polymer binders. In our previous work, we adopted the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique to fabricate the pressure-sensitive molecular film (PSMF) using Pd(II) Mesoporphyrin IX (PdMP), which has pressure sensitivity only in the low pressure range (below 130 Pa). In this study, aiming for pressure measurement under an atmospheric pressure condition, we have constructed four samples of PSMFs composed of Pt(II) Mesoporphyrin IX (PtMP), Pt(II) Mesoporphyrin IX dimethylester (PtMPDME), Pt(II) Protoporphyrin IX (PtPP) and Cu(II) Mesoporphyrin IX dimethylester (CuMPDME) as luminescent molecules. The pressure sensitivity of those PSMFs was measured, and it was clarified that the pressure sensitivity of PSMF-PtMP is the highest among the four samples. Moreover, the temperature dependency of PSMF-PtMP was investigated, and we found that the temperature dependency of PSMF is dominated not by the oxygen diffusion in the layer, but by non-radiative deactivation process of excited luminescent molecules.  相似文献

A new computationally efficient direct method is applied to estimating unsaturated hydraulic properties during steady-state infiltration and evaporation at soil surface. For different soil types with homogeneous and layered heterogeneity, soil hydraulic parameters and unsaturated conductivities are estimated. Unlike the traditional indirect inversion method, the direct method does not require forward simulations to assess the measurement-to-model fit; thus, the knowledge of model boundary conditions (BC) is not required. Instead, the method employs a set of local approximate solutions to impose continuity of pressure head and soil water fluxes throughout the inversion domain, while measurements act to condition these solutions. Given sufficient measurements, it yields a well-posed system of nonlinear equations that can be solved with optimization in a single step and is thus computationally efficient. For both Gardner’s and van Genuchten’s soil water models, unsaturated hydraulic conductivities and pressure heads (including the unknown BC) can be accurately recovered. When increasing measurement errors are imposed, inversion becomes less accurate, but the solution is stable, i.e., estimation errors remain bounded. Moreover, when the unsaturated conductivity model is known, inversion can recover its parameters; if it is unknown, inversion can recover a nonparametric, piecewise continuous function to which soil parameters can be obtained via fitting. Overall, inversion accuracy of the direct method is influenced by (1) measurement density and errors; (2) rate of infiltration or evaporation; (3) variation of the unsaturated conductivity; (4) flow direction; (5) the number of soil layers.  相似文献

In the case of turbine combustors operating with liquid fuel the combustion process is governed by the liquid fuel atomization and its dispersion in the combustion chamber. By highly unsteady flow field conditions the transient interaction between the liquid and the gaseous phase is of interest, because it results in a temporal variation of air–fuel ratio which leads to a fluctuating temperature distribution. The objective of this research was the investigation of transient flow field phenomena (e.g. large coherent structures) on droplet dynamics and dispersion of an isothermal flow (of inert water droplets) as a necessary first step towards a full analysis of spray combustion in real-life devices. The advanced injector system for lean jet engine combustors PERM (Partial Evaporated Rapid Mixing) was applied, generating a dilute polydispersed spray in a swirled flow field. Experiments were performed using Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA) and a patternator to determine the droplet polydispersity, concentration maps, and velocity profiles in the flow. An important finding is the effect of large-scale coherent structures due mainly to the precessing of the vortex core (PVC) of the swirling air jet on the particle dispersion patterns. The experimental results then serve as reference data to assess the accuracy of the Eulerian–Lagrangian computations using a Large Eddy Simulation (LES), a Unsteady Reynolds-Average Navier–Stokes Simulation (URANS) and two simplified (steady-state) simulations. There, a simplified droplet injection model was used and the required boundary conditions of injected droplet sizes were obtained from measurements. Important transient effects of deterministic droplet separation observed during experiments, could be perfectly replicated with this injection model. It is convincingly shown, through extensive computations, that the resolution of instantaneous vortical structures is indeed crucial; hence the LES, or a reasonably-well resolved URANS are preferred over the steady-state solutions with additional, stochastic-type, turbulent dispersion models.  相似文献

The dominant paradigm in epidemiology is characterized by the absence of a theory of disease that is capable of informing epidemiologic praxis and challenging conventional linear statistical reasoning. This paper has two main objectives: first, it is a reflection over the pathologic process (transition from health to disease state) in line with the nonlinear dynamic paradigm of self-organized critical systems. According to the latter, dynamic processes are characterized by phase transitions, emergence, robustness, far-from-equilibrium dynamics, punctuated equilibria, historically-based mechanic, nonlinearity, irreversibility, and heterogeneity. Further, complex adaptive systems have outcomes with inverse power law (IPL) fits. The article second objective is to test the theory of self-organized critical systems along two paths of epidemiologic investigations. The first path takes the form of a study in waiting times (WT) and attempts to show that their distribution complies with an IPL. The second application shows that hierarchies of patients (generated by cluster analysis) with a complex disease process (diabetes) featuring coupling of their component units (biologic markers of glucose handling) also fit an IPL. The IPL fit is compared with that of a lognormal, the more likely benchmark model for WTs. It is concluded that both the WTs and hierarchies of patients can be interpreted in terms of self-organized critical systems with possible fractal significance. The paper culminates with a theory of disease emphasizing the properties of self-organized complex systems in the epidemiologic context.  相似文献
