This study was undertaken to assess the relative bias between two types of sampling methods for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), i.e., sorbent tube vs. bag sampling methods and between different standard phases. For the purpose of this comparative study, gaseous standards containing three major aromatic VOCs (benzene, toluene, and xylene—commonly called BTX) were analyzed by thermo-desorption gas chromatography (TD-GC) with flame ionization detector. According to our findings, the relative response of target compounds can be smaller in the bag method than in the tube method. Although the relative bias varies with the sample transfer conditions for the TD, the mean slope values of the former are smaller by up to 20% relative to the latter, possibly due to sorptive loss on the bag sampler. In addition, the effects of different standard matrices (i.e. liquid and gas phases) were also examined using the sorbent tube method. The results indicated that the slope values of the gas-phase standard were smaller by half (about 43–56%) than the liquid-phase standard. Consequently, information concerning the extent of relative bias between sampling methods (e.g., bag and tube) or standard matrices (e.g., gas and liquid) should be considered as one of the key factors in TD applications.  相似文献

In this study, a series of experiments were conducted to examine the feasibility of the gas chromatographic approach for the quantification of several odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in environmental samples which included methyl ethyl ketone, isobutyl alcohol, methyl isobutyl ketone, and butyl acetate plus benzene, toluene, and xylene (namely, BTX). The gaseous working standards (WS) of seven compounds were initially calibrated at varying concentration ranges by direct injection (DI) into GC injector. The detection properties of these compounds were then tested with a thermal desorber (TD). The relative sensitivities of three aromatic VOCs differed greatly between DI and TD methods. In contrast, four polar VOCs tend to consistently exhibit relative enhancement in response factors with increasing molecular mass (an exception of butyl acetate), regardless of method. The TD-based analysis was reliable enough to detect all target VOCs below their odor threshold values with their detection limit (DL) values. This TD method, when tested against a number of environmental samples collected from several industrial facilities, confirmed the presence of these odorous VOCs at a wide concentration range.  相似文献

Thermal desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) is becoming more commonly used for the quantification and identification of organic compounds in particulate matter (PM), including ambient and source PM such as diesel particulate matter (DPM). It has been proven as an alternative to the traditional solvent extraction (SE) method and liquid injection gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (LI-GC/MS). However, little information is available on how different types of TD-GC/MS systems compare to each other for analysis of real-world PM samples or to direct LI-GC/MS for analysis of PM components in a test solution. To address this, CanmetENERGY Characterization Laboratory initiated a round robin with the participation of 10 laboratories worldwide. Three sample types were analysed: (i) a test solution with a suite of pure compounds commonly found in PM, analysed by TD-GC/MS and LI-GC/MS; (ii) a DPM sample, analysed by TD-GC/MS and SE; and (iii) an ambient PM sample, analysed by TD-GC/MS. The first part of the study showed good overall performance and comparability between the different TD-GC/MS systems and LI-GC/MS method for the analysis of PM components in a test solution, with some variability of results due to system types and parameters used, concentration of calibration standards, and whether or not an internal standards was used. The analysis of the DPM sample showed greater variability between laboratories and methods as many PM components were present near the detection limit and matrix effects particularly affected the TD-GC/MS analysis of heavier n-alkanes. In the last part of the study, for the analysis of an ambient PM sample by TD-GC/MS, the analysis of variance showed good comparison between labs for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (94% non-significant), but slightly lower for n-alkanes (68%) and biomarkers (57%).  相似文献

In this study, the relative performance of gas chromatography (GC) was investigated with respect to the differences in two types of calibration approaches with a thermal desorption (TD) method: the fixed standard concentration approach (FSC: the comparison of different sample volumes for a given standard) was compared with the fixed standard volume approach (FSV: the comparison of different concentration standards at a fixed loading volume). Gaseous working standards of seven odorants, including methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), butyl acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, isobutyl alcohol, toluene, xylene, and a reference component, benzene, were prepared at four concentration levels (10-100 ppb). They were then analyzed by controlling the TD-loading volumes at six levels (40-1200 mL). The results derived by these contrasting calibration approaches showed moderate changes in the GC sensitivity, either with an increasing concentration (i.e., FSC), or with an increasing sample loading volume (i.e., FSV). Despite an eccentric trend of MEK, the TD-based analysis was fairly predictable and can be recommended for the analysis of the selected odorants.  相似文献

This study describes a method for the quantification of trace‐level benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene in cellulose acetate tow by heart‐cutting multidimensional gas chromatography with mass spectrometry in selected ion monitoring mode. As the major volatile component in cellulose acetate tow samples, acetone would be overloaded when attempting to perform a high‐resolution separation to analyze trace benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene. With heart‐cutting technology, a larger volume injection was achieved and acetone was easily cut off by employing a capillary column with inner diameter of 0.32 mm in the primary gas chromatography. Only benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene were directed to the secondary column to result in an effective separation. The matrix interference was minimized and the peak shapes were greatly improved. Finally, quantitative analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene was performed using an isotopically labeled internal standard. The headspace multidimensional gas chromatography mass spectrometry system was proved to be a powerful tool for analyzing trace volatile organic compounds in complex samples.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of injection volume change on gas chromatographic detection properties have been evaluated using gas-phase standards containing three aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOC): benzene, toluene, and xylene (commonly called BTX). To examine such effects on GC sensitivity, a series of calibration data sets were obtained using standards of three concentration values (3, 6, and 10 ppm) at each of five selected injection volumes (20 to 1000 microL). The results were initially examined in terms of the fixed standard volume (FSV) approach to allow the direct comparison of calibration patterns between different injection volumes. Identical data sets were then re-organized so that the calibration data could also be compared across variable injection volumes for a given standard concentration (at all three concentrations), i.e. by the fixed standard concentration (FSC) approach. The results of our comparative analysis between the FSV and the FSC approaches indicate that the calibration patterns of VOC are highly sensitive to changes in injection volume or injection-related conditions. It is thus suggested that the former approach is more reasonable for reducing uncertainties associated with the GC-based quantification of atmospheric pollutants.  相似文献

A rapid determination of decabromodiphenyl ether (DeBDE) in polystyrene (PS) by thermal desorption (TD)-GC/MS was studied. The TD-GC/MS method using a pyrolysis-GC/MS system allowed the quick quantification of DeBDE in a waste TV back plate composing of a PS flame-retarded with polybrominated diphenyl ethers on the basis of the resulting chromatogram with a ca. 4% relative standard deviation without using any tedious sample pretreatment, such as solvent extraction.  相似文献

This paper presents a detailed study on the calibration of a thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS)-based methodology for quantification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gaseous and liquid samples. For the first time, it is documented to what extent three widely encountered problems affect precise and accurate quantification, and solutions to improve calibration are proposed. The first issue deals with the limited precision in MS quantification, as exemplified by high relative standard deviations (up to 40%, n=5) on response factors of a set of 69 selected VOCs in a volatility range from 16 Pa to 85 kPa at 298 K. The addition of [(2)H(8)]toluene as an internal standard, in gaseous or liquid phase, improves this imprecision by a factor of 5. Second, the matrix in which the standard is dissolved is shown to be highly important towards calibration. Quantification of gaseous VOCs loaded on a sorbent tube using response factors obtained with liquid standards results in systematic deviations of 40-80%. Relative response factors determined by the analysis of sorbent tubes loaded with both analytes and [(2)H(8)]toluene from liquid phase are shown to offer a reliable alternative for quantification of airborne VOCs, without need for expensive and often hardly available gaseous standards. Third, a strategy is proposed involving the determination of a relative response factor being representative for a group of analytes with similar functionalities and electron impact fragmentation patterns. This group method approach indicates to be useful (RSD approximately 10%) for quantifying analytes belonging to that class but having no standards available.  相似文献

The value of the gas chromatography (GC) and selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) combination for the analysis of trace gases is demonstrated by the quantification of acetone in air samples using the three precursor ions available to SIFT-MS, viz. H3O+, NO+ and O2+, and by the separation of the isomers 1-propanol and 2-propanol, and their analysis using H3O+ precursor ions. It is shown that the GC/SIFT-MS combination allows for accurate trace gas quantification obviating the regular, time-consuming calibrations that are usually required for the more commonly used detectors of GC systems, and the positive identification of isomers in mixtures that is often challenging using SIFT-MS alone. Thus, the GC/SIFT-MS combination paves the way to more confident analyses of complex mixtures such as exhaled breath.  相似文献

Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry, (SIFT-MS), is a technique for simultaneous real-time quantification of several trace gases in air and exhaled breath. It relies on chemical ionization of the trace gas molecules in air/breath samples introduced into helium carrier gas, using H(3)O(+), NO(+) and O(2)(+) reagent (precursor ions). Reactions between the precursor ions and the trace gas molecules proceed for an accurately defined time, the precursor and product ions being detected and counted by a downstream mass spectrometer. Absolute concentrations of trace gases in single breath exhalation can be determined by SIFT-MS down to parts-per-billion (ppb) levels, obviating sample collection into bags or onto traps. Calibration using chemical standards is not required, as the concentrations are calculated using the known reaction rate constants and measured flow rates and pressures. SIFT-MS has been used for many pilot investigations in several areas of research, especially as a non-invasive breath analysis tool to investigate physiological processes in humans and animals, for clinical diagnosis and for therapeutic monitoring. Examples of the results obtained from several such studies are outlined to demonstrate the potential of SIFT-MS for trace gas analysis of air, exhaled breath and the headspace above liquids.  相似文献

High‐temperature liquid standard loading strategy onto solid sorbent traps for calibration of thermal desorption–GC–MS techniques for the analysis of volatile organic compounds is evaluated and optimised. With this proposed set‐up, volatilised liquid‐loaded standards interact in gas phase with solid sorbent particles. Response factor for 15 volatile compounds with different vapour pressures have been evaluated and compared with common strategies based on liquid matrix interactions. Using gas matrix strategy improves signal output in the range 10–700%. Average increase for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes is 480%. Reported systematic bias between liquid standards and gas samples are reduced, enhancing thermal desorption methodologies on one of its more important issues. In addition, the proposed system improves the average repeatability to a 3.2%, over 13 times some reported data. The use of an ultra‐thin GC capillary column of 150 μm id performs better peak resolution in about 60% the time with usual 250 μm id capillary columns. The usefulness of this proposed optimised procedure has been proved in real air matrix samples, through a large study with the reliable characterisation of 93 different volatile compounds in the ambient air of a municipal solid waste treatment area  相似文献

A method is described for the determination of dimethylselenide and dimethyldiselenide using a purge-and-trap/thermal desorption device (PT/TD) coupled to a capillary column gas chromatograph with a six-way Valco valve. The system is constructed in such a way that it allows also on-column injections of the volatile compounds in organic solvents for external calibration purposes without the need to disassemble the PT/TD. The influence of the purge flow, purge time and volume of sample, on the purge efficiency of the PT system is studied. Desorption time and temperature are optimised for the TD mode of operation. Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and flame photometric detection (FPD) have been used for the final determination of the volatile compounds. The figures of merit achieved with both detectors are reported.  相似文献

In this study, the analytical compatibility of the gas chromatographic (GC) approach was evaluated through a cross‐calibration exercise. To this end, three aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs: benzene, toluene, and p‐xylene (BTX)) were simultaneously analyzed with four individual instrumental setups (type I = GC with MS plus solid phase microextraction (SPME) method, II = GC with flame ionization detection (FID) plus SPME, III = fast GC‐FID plus SPME, and IV = GC‐FID plus air server/thermal desorption (AS/TD) method). A comparison of basic quality assurance (QA) data revealed considerable differences in DL values among the methods with moderate variabilities in the intercompound sensitivity. In light of the differences in detection properties, the analytical bias involved for each methodological approach was assessed by the relative relationship between analytes and basic operating conditions. The results suggest that the analysis of environmental samples at ultra‐low concentration levels (at or below ppb level) can be subject to diverse sources of bias. Although detection properties of target compounds seem to be affected by the combined effects of various factors, changes in the sample concentration levels were seen to be the most consistent under the experimental setups analyzed in this study.  相似文献

Collection of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is a relatively simple noninvasive method of breath analysis; however, no data have been reported that would relate concentration of volatile compounds in EBC to their gaseous concentrations in exhaled air. The aim of the study was to investigate which volatile compounds are present in EBC and how their concentrations relate to results of direct breath analysis. Thus, samples of EBC were collected in a standard way from several subjects and absolute levels of several common volatile breath metabolites (ammonia, acetone, ethanol, methanol, propanol, isoprene, hydrogen cyanide, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde) were then determined in their headspace using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS). Results are compared with those from on-line breath analyses carried out immediately before collecting the EBC samples. It has been demonstrated that SIFT-MS can be used to quantify the concentrations of volatiles in EBC samples and that, for methanol, ammonia, ethanol and acetone, the EBC concentrations correlate with the direct breath levels. However, the EBC concentrations of isoprene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide and propanol do not correlate with direct breath measurements. An analytical procedure based on in‐tube extraction followed by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry has been developed for the analysis of 24 of the main volatile components in cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) samples. According to their chemical structure, the compounds were organized into different groups: one hydrocarbon, one aldehyde, four alcohols, four esters, and 14 monoterpenes. By single‐factor experiments, incubation temperature, incubation time, extraction volume, extraction strokes, extraction speed, desorption temperature, and desorption speed were determined as 60°C, 20 min, 1000 μL, 20, 50:50 μL/s, 280°C, 100 μL/s, respectively. Quantitative analysis using authentic standards and external calibration curves was performed. The limit of detection and limit of quantification for the analytical procedure were calculated. Results shown the benzaldehyde, ethyl butanoate, 2‐methyl‐1‐butanol, 1‐hexanol, 1‐butanol, α‐terpineol, and terpinen‐4‐ol were the most abundant volatile compounds in analyzed fruits (68.6–585 μg/kg). The obtained data may contribute to qualify cape gooseberry to the group of superfruits and, therefore, increase its popularity.  相似文献

The topic of ambient gas analysis has been rapidly developed in the last few years with the evolution of the exciting new techniques such as DESI, DART and EESI. The essential feature of all is that analysis of trace gases can be accomplished either in the gas phase or those released from surfaces, crucially avoiding sample collection or modification. In this regard, selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry, SIFT-MS, also performs ambient analyses both accurately and rapidly. In this focused review we describe the underlying ion chemistry underpinning SIFT-MS through a discourse on the reactions of different classes of organic and inorganic molecules with H(3)O(+), NO(+) and O(2)(+)˙ studied using the SIFT technique. Rate coefficients and ion products of these reactions facilitate absolute SIFT-MS analyses and can also be useful for the interpretation of data obtained by the other ambient analysis methods mentioned above. The essential physics and flow dynamics of SIFT-MS are described that, together with the reaction kinetics, allow SIFT-MS to perform absolute ambient analyses of trace compounds in humid atmospheric air, exhaled breath and the headspace of aqueous liquids. Several areas of research that, through pilot experiments, are seen to benefit from ambient gas analysis using SIFT-MS are briefly reviewed. Special attention is given to exhaled breath and urine headspace analysis directed towards clinical diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring, and some other areas researched using SIFT-MS are summarised. Finally, extensions to current areas of application and indications of other directions in which SIFT-MS can be exploited for ambient analysis are alluded to.  相似文献

This study describes the development of an analytical method based on active collection in a multisorbent Tenax TA/Carbograph 1TD tube, followed by thermal desorption and GC‐MS for the determination of 16 volatile organic compounds in air samples. The analyzed compounds include ozone precursors and odor‐causing compounds belonging to different chemical families (sulfur‐ and nitrogen‐containing compounds, aldehydes, and terpenes). Two types of sorbents were tested and desorption conditions (temperature, time, and sampling, and desorption flow) were evaluated. External calibration was carried out using the multisorbent bed. Method detection limits in the range 0.2–2.0 μg m?3 for 1 L samples were obtained. The method was applied for determining the target compounds in air samples from two different wastewater treatment plants. Most compounds were detected and toluene, limonene, and nonanal were found in particularly high concentrations with maximum values of 438, 233, and 382 μg m?3, respectively.  相似文献

A novel method for the determination of residual solvents in pharmaceuticals by thermal desorption (TD)-GC/MS has been established. A programmed temperature pyrolyzer (double shot pyrolyzer) is applied for the TD. This method does not require any sample pretreatment and allows very small amounts of the sample. Directly desorbed solvents from intact pharmaceuticals (ca. 1 mg) in the desorption cup (5 mm x 3.8 mm i.d.) were cryofocused at the head of a capillary column prior to a GC/MS analysis. The desorption temperature was set at a point about 20 degrees C higher than the melting point of each sample individually, and held for 3 min. The analytical results using 7 different pharmaceuticals were in agreement with those obtained by direct injection (DI) of the solution, followed by USP XXIII. This proposed TD-GC/MS method was demonstrated to be very useful for the identification and quantification of residual solvents. Furthermore, this method was simple, allowed rapid analysis and gave good repeatability.  相似文献

We describe how selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) can be used to determine the absolute humidity of air, breath and liquid headspace samples. This involves the determination of the relative count rates of the H3O+ ions and those H3O+.(H2O)(1,2,3) hydrate ions that inevitably form in the helium carrier gas when humid samples are being analysed by SIFT-MS using H3O+ precursor ions. This requires an understanding of the kinetics of hydrated hydronium ion formation, the involvement of mass discrimination in the analytical quadrupole mass spectrometer and the decreased diffusive loss of the heavier hydrates along the flow tube. Thus, we show that the humidity of breath and liquid headspace samples, typically at the few percent level, can be directly obtained on-line to the SIFT-MS instrument along with the concentrations of trace gases, which are present at much lower levels. We emphasise the value of parallel humidity measurements in ensuring good real-time sampling of breath and liquid headspace and the value of such measurements to trace gas analysis using SIFT-MS.  相似文献
