A set of well‐defined poly(ethylene‐alt‐propylene)‐b‐polylactide (PEP‐PLA) diblock copolymers containing volume fractions of PLA (fPLA) ranging between 0.08 and 0.91 were synthesized by a combination of living anionic polymerization, catalytic hydrogenation, and controlled coordination‐insertion ring‐opening polymerization. The morphological behavior of these relatively low‐molecular‐weight PEP‐PLA diblock copolymers was investigated with a combination of rheology, small‐angle X‐ray scattering, and differential scanning calorimetry. The ordered microstructures observed were lamellae (L), hexagonally packed cylinders (C), spheres (S), and gyroid (G), a bicontinous cubic morphology having Ia3 d space group symmetry. The G morphology existed in only a small region between the L‐C morphologies in close proximity to the order–disorder transition (ODT). Transformations from L to G were observed upon heating in several samples. The efficacy of the reverse G to L transition in one sample was cooling rate dependent. The PEP‐PLA Flory–Huggins interaction parameter as a function of temperature χPEP‐PLA(T) was estimated from TODT's by mean‐field theory and subsequently used in the construction of the experimental PEP‐PLA morphology diagram (χN versus fPLA). The resultant morphology diagram was symmetric there were the well‐defined L‐C morphology boundaries. The low molecular weight of the materials imparted no significant deviation from previously documented diblock systems. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated with 2‐pyrrolidinone and n‐dodecyl mercaptan (R‐SH) has been explored. This polymerization system showed “living” characteristics; for example, the molecular weight of the resulting polymers increased with reaction time by gel permeation chromatographic analysis. Also, the polymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR techniques. The polymer end with the iniferter structures was found. By the initial‐rate method, the polymerization rate depended on [2‐pyrrolidinone]1.0 and [R‐SH]0. Combining the structure analysis and the polymerization‐rate expression, a possible mechanism was proposed. n‐Dodecyl mercaptan served dual roles—as a catalyst at low conversion and as a chain‐transfer agent at high conversion. Finally, the thermal properties were studied, and the glass‐transition temperature and thermal‐degradation temperature were, respectively, 25 and 80–100 °C higher than that of the azobisisobutyronitrile system. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The phase behavior of thin‐film blends of polystyrene (PS) and the random copolymer poly(styrene‐co‐4‐bromostyrene) (PBS) was studied with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). Phase behavior was studied as a function of the PBS and PS degree of polymerization (N), degree of miscibility [controlled via the volume fraction of bromine in the copolymer (f)], and annealing conditions. The Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ was measured directly from SAXS as a function of temperature and scaled with f as χ = f2χS–BrS [where χS–BrS represents the segmental interaction between PS and the homopolymer poly(4‐bromostyrene)] Simulations based on the Flory–Huggins theory and χ measured from SAXS were used to predict phase diagrams for all the systems studied. The PBS/PS system exhibited upper critical solution temperature behavior. The AFM studies showed that increasing f in PBS led to progressively different morphologies, from flat topography (i.e., one phase) to interconnected structures or islands. In the two‐phase region, the morphology was a strong function of N (due to changes in mobility). A comparison of the estimated PBS volume fractions from the AFM images with the PBS bulk volume fraction in the blend suggested the encapsulation of PBS in PS, supporting the work of previous researchers. Excellent agreement between the phase diagram predictions (based on χ measured by SAXS) and the AFM images was observed. These studies were also consistent with interdiffusion measurements of PBS/PS interfaces (with Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy), which indicated that the interdiffusion coefficient decreased with increasing χ in the one‐phase region and dropped to zero deep inside the two‐phase region. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Star poly(methyl methacrylate)s (P*) of various arm lengths and core sizes were synthesized in high yields by the polymer linking reaction in Ru(II)‐catalyzed living radical polymerization. The yields of the star polymers were strongly dependent on the reaction conditions and increased under the following conditions: (1) at a higher overall concentration of arm chains ([P*]), (2) with a larger degree of polymerization (DP) of the arm chains (arm length), and (3) with a larger ratio (r) of linking agents to P* (core size). In particular, the yields sharply increased in a short time at a higher temperature, in a polar solution, and at a higher complex concentration after the addition of linking agents. These star polymers were then analyzed by multi‐angle laser light scattering to determine the weight‐average molecular weight (3.8 × 103 to 1.5 × 106), the number of arm chains per molecule (f = 4–63), and the radius of gyration (Rz = 2–22 nm), which also depended on the reaction conditions (e.g., f and Rz increased as [P*], DP, and r increased). Small‐angle X‐ray scattering analyses of the star polymers showed that they consisted of spheres for which the radius of the microgel core was 2.7 nm. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel block anionomers consisting of polyisobutylene (PIB) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) segments were prepared and characterized. The specific targets were various molecular weight diblocks (PIB‐b‐PMAA?), triblocks (PMAA?b‐PIB‐b‐PMAA?), and three‐arm star blocks [Φ(PIB‐b‐PMAA?)3] consisting of rubbery PIB blocks with a number‐average degree of polymerization of 50–1000 (number‐average molecular weight = 3000–54,000 g/mol) connected to blocks of PMAA? anions with a number‐average degree of polymerization of 5–20. The overall strategy for the synthesis of these constructs consisted of four steps: (1) synthesis by living cationic polymerization of t‐chloro‐monotelechelic, t‐chloro‐ditelechelic, and t‐chloro‐tritelechelic PIBs; (2) site transformation to obtain PIBs fitted with termini capable of mediating the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of tert‐butyl methacrylate (tBMA); (3) ATRP of tBMA, and (4) hydrolysis of poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate) to PMAA?. The architectures created and the synthesis steps employed are summarized. Kinetic and model experiments greatly assisted in the development of convenient synthesis methods. The microarchitectures of the various block anionomers were confirmed by spectroscopy and other techniques. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 3662–3678, 2002  相似文献

Poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate‐coN,O‐dimethacryloylhydroxylamine) particles were prepared by dispersion polymerization in toluene/2‐methylpropan‐1‐ol medium using cellulose acetate butyrate and dibenzoyl peroxide (BPO) as a steric stabilizer and initiator, respectively. The particle size was reduced with decreasing solvency of the reaction medium (more nuclei were generated) because the critical chain length of the precipitated oligomers decreased with an increasing toluene content, which is a poorer solvent for the polymer than 2‐methylpropan‐1‐ol. There is an optimum initiator concentration (2 wt % BPO relative to monomers) for producing low‐polydispersity particles under given conditions. Additionally, discrete spherical particles were obtained at a low monomer concentration and/or higher polymerization temperature. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Various novel block cationomers consisting of polyisobutylene (PIB) and poly[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA) segments were synthesized and characterized. The specific targets were various molecular weight diblocks (PIB‐b‐PDMAEMA+) and triblocks (PDMAEMA+b‐PIB‐b‐PDMAEMA+), with the PIB blocks in the DPn = 50–200 range (number‐average molecular weight = 3,000–9000 g/mol) connected to blocks of PDMAEMA+ cations in the DPn = 5–20 range (where DP is the number‐average degree of polymerization). The overall synthetic strategy for the preparation of these block cationomers had four steps: (1) synthesis by living cationic polymerization of mono‐ and diallyltelechelic polyisobutylenes, (2) end‐group transformation to obtain PIBs fitted with termini capable of mediating the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of DMAEMA, (3) ATRP of DMAEMA, and (4) quaternization of PDMAEMA to PDMAEMA +I? by CH3I. Scheme 1 shows the microarchitecture and outlines the synthesis route. Kinetic and model experiments provided guidance for developing convenient synthesis methods. The microarchitecture of PIB–PDMAEMA di‐ and triblocks and the corresponding block cationomers were confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy and solubility studies. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Vinyl thiocyanatoacetate (VTCA) was synthesized, and its radical polymerization behavior was studied in acetone with dimethyl 2,2′‐azobisisobutyrate (MAIB) as an initiator. The initial polymerization rate (Rp) at 60 °C was expressed by Rp = k[MAIB]0.6±0.1 [VTCA]1.0±0.1 where k is a rate constant. The overall activation energy of the polymerization was 112 kJ/mol. The number‐average molecular weights of the resulting poly (VTCA)s (1.4–1.6 × 104) were almost independent of the concentrations of the initiator and monomer, indicating chain transfer to the monomer. The chain‐transfer constant to the monomer was estimated to be 9.6 × 10?3 at 60 °C. According to the 1H and 13C NMR spectra of poly (VTCA), the radical polymerization of VTCA proceeded through normal vinyl addition and intramolecular transfer of the cyano group. The cyano group transfer became progressively more important with decreasing monomer concentration. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. An asymmetric difunctional initiator 2‐phenyl‐2‐[(2,2,6,6 tetramethylpiperidino)oxy] ethyl 2‐bromo propanoate ( 1 ) was used for the synthesis of ABC‐type methyl methacrylate (MMA)‐tert‐butylacrylate (tBA)‐styrene (St) triblock copolymers via a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and stable free‐radical polymerization (SFRP). The ATRP‐ATRP‐SFRP or SFRP‐ATRP‐ATRP route led to ABC‐type triblock copolymers with controlled molecular weight and moderate polydispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.35). The block copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR. The retaining chain‐end functionality and the applying halide exchange afforded high blocking efficiency as well as maintained control over entire routes. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic and heterotactic‐rich poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) macromonomer, that is, PVA having a phenyl or phenoxyethyl methacrylate unit as the polymerizable end group, was synthesized via the aldol‐type group‐transfer polymerization (aldol‐GTP) technique. Aldol‐GTPs of vinyloxytriethylsilane (VOTES) were carried out in dichloromethane with 4‐methacryloylbenzaldehyde and 4‐(2‐methacryloylethoxy)benzaldehyde as the initiators with various Lewis acids. The polymerizations proceeded smoothly to give silylated PVA macromonomers (number‐average molecular weights: 1.3 × 103–1.96 × 104). Poly(VOTES) was easily desilylated to give heterotactic‐rich PVA macromonomer in good yield. The critical micelle concentration of the PVA macromonomer was determined by surface‐tension measurement. Micellar polymerization of the amphiphilic macromonomer gave comb‐shaped (graft) polymer having PVA side chains effectively (conversion: 80–82%), whereas polymerization in dimethyl sulfoxide (homogeneous state) did not. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Several titanium complexes based on aminodiol ligands were tested as initiators for the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐caprolactone under solution and bulk conditions. All complexes were found to be efficient under both conditions. For bulk polymerization at 70 °C, high activities were observed (113.3–156.2 gpoly mmolcat?1 h?1) together with controlled molar mass distribution. Kinetic studies revealed controlled polymerization, and the chain propagation was first order with respect to monomer conversion. One complex was also tested for the ROP of rac‐β‐butyrolactone and the end‐group analysis suggested that ring opening occurs through acyl‐oxygen bond cleavage via coordination–insertion mechanism. The microstructure analysis of polymer by 13C NMR indicates atactic polymer. Another complex was also found to be efficient initiator for the ROP of trimethylene carbonate under solution and bulk conditions. Again, end‐group analysis suggests coordination–insertion mechanism. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

The ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide initiated by single‐component rare‐earth tris(4‐tert‐butylphenolate)s was conducted. The influences of the rare‐earth elements, solvents, temperature, monomer and initiator concentrations, and reaction time on the polymerization were investigated in detail. No racemization was found from 70 to 100 °C under the examined conditions. NMR and differential scanning calorimetry measurements further confirmed that the polymerization occurred without epimerization of the monomer or polymer. A kinetic study indicated that the polymerization rate was first‐order with respect to the monomer and initiator concentrations. The overall activation energy of the ring‐opening polymerization was 79.2 kJ mol?1. 1H NMR data showed that the L ‐lactide monomer inserted into the growing chains with acyl–oxygen bond cleavage. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2,2′‐Azobis[N‐(2‐propenyl)‐2‐methylpropionamide] (APMPA) with two carbon–carbon double bonds and an azo group was copolymerized with vinyl benzoate (VBz) at 60 °C, resulting in azo groups containing VBz/APMPA prepolymers and crosslinked polymers as soluble and insoluble polymeric azo initiators, respectively. The polymerization characteristics of APMPA as a novel diallyl monomer were clarified with the rate and degree of polymerization and the monomer reactivity ratios. The gelation behaviors in VBz/APMPA crosslinking copolymerizations were examined in detail with a comparison of the actual gel point and the theoretical gel point calculated according to Stockmayer's equation with the tentative assumption of equal reactivity for both vinyl groups belonging to VBz and APMPA. The effectiveness of the resulting branched or crosslinked poly(VBz‐co‐APMPA)s as soluble or insoluble polymeric azo initiators, respectively, at providing graft polymers through the cleavage of azo groups at an elevated temperature was examined by the polymerization of allyl benzoate at 120 °C. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. An ordered head‐to‐tail (HT) polyurethane was successfully prepared by the polyaddition reaction of p‐isocyanatobenzyl isocyanate with ethylene glycol with dibutyltin dilaurate as a catalyst. Furthermore, the HT regularity of polyurethane was improved to 83% with 1,1,3,3‐tetraphenyl‐1,3‐dichlorodistannoxane. The polymerization was conducted in N,N‐dimethylformamide at 30 °C with both monomers mixed at once. The microstructure of the polymer was investigated by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and the polymer obtained by the polyaddition reaction had the expected HT linkages. The constitutional regularity of the polymers influenced the thermal properties and crystallinity. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 39: 416–429, 2001  相似文献

Carboxylic acid chloride end‐functionalized all‐aromatic hyperbranched polyesters were prepared from the bulk polycondensation of the AB2 monomer 5‐(trimethylsiloxy)isophthaloyl dichloride. The acid chloride end functionality of the hyperbranched polyester was modified in situ with methanol and yielded methyl ester ends in a one‐pot process. Chain‐end functionalization and esterification were quantitative according to both potentiometric titration and 1H NMR analysis. The signals of 1H and 13C NMR spectra of the esterified hyperbranched polyester were fully assigned from model compounds of the focal, linear, dendritic, and terminal units. The degree of branching and molecular weight averages measured by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and multidetector size exclusion chromatography increased systematically with increasing polymerization temperatures between 80 and 200 °C. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ring‐opening polymerization of a monomer containing a free carboxylic acid group is reported for the first time. The monomer, 5‐methyl‐5‐carboxyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (MCC), was copolymerized with trimethylene carbonate (TMC) in an enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization conducted in bulk at 80 °C. The low‐melting TMC comonomer also solubilized the high‐melting MCC monomer, allowing for solvent‐free polymerizations. Six commercially available lipases were screened, and Candida antarctica lipase‐B (Novozym‐435) and Pseudomonas cepacia lipase were selected to catalyze the copolymerization because of their higher monomer conversions. Higher molecular weight polymers (weight‐average molecular weight = 7800–9200) were prepared when Novozym‐435 was used, with less MCC incorporated into the copolymer than used in the monomer feed. However, Pseudomonas cepacia lipase showed good agreement between the molar feed ratios and the molar composition, but the molecular weights (weight‐average molecular weight = 3600–4800) were lower than those obtained when Novozym‐435 was used. 13C NMR spectral data were used for microstructural analysis, which suggested the formation of random, linear, and pendant carboxylic acid groups containing polycarbonates with hydroxyl groups at both chain ends. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization kinetics at several temperatures of 2‐ethoxyethyl methacrylate (EEMA) and 2(2‐ethoxyethoxy) ethyl methacrylate (DEMA) in bulk and in dioxane solutions are described. The gel effect was never detected at monomer concentrations equal to or lower than 1 mol L?1, although in the bulk polymerization both monomers display the gel effect at very low conversions. Because of the influence of the efficiency factor f on the polymerization rate, a theoretical kinetic interpretation of the changes in f with monomer and initiator concentrations and kinetic parameters was performed to achieve a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in radical polymerization. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Lanthanum isopropoxide (La(OiPr)3) has been synthesized and employed for ring‐opening polymerization of 1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one in bulk as a single‐component initiator. The influences of reaction conditions such as initiator concentration, reaction time, and reaction temperature on the polymerization were investigated. The kinetics indicated that the polymerization is first‐order with respect to the monomer concentration. The Mechanistic investigations according to 1H NMR spectrum analysis demonstrated that the polymerization of PDO proceeded through a coordination‐insertion mechanism with a rupture of the acyl‐oxygen bond of the monomer rather than the alkyl‐oxygen bond cleavage. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinyl alcohol)‐graft‐poly(1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one) (PVA‐g‐PPDO) with designed molecular structure was synthesized by a solid‐state polymerization. The solid‐state copolymerization was preceded by a graft copolymerization of PDO initiated with PVA as a multifunctional initiator, and Sn (Oct)2 as a coininitiator/catalyst in a homogeneous molten state. The polymerization temperature was then decreased and the copolymerization was carried out in a solid state. The products prepared by solid‐state polymerization were characterized by 1H NMR and DSC, and were compared with those synthesized in the homogeneous molten state. The degree of polymerization (Dp), degree of substitution (Ds), yield and the average molecular weight of the graft copolymer with different molecular structure were calculated from the 1H NMR spectra. The results show that the crystallization process during the solid‐state polymerization may suppress the undesirable inter‐ or intramolecular side reactions, then resulting in a controlled molecular structure of PVA‐g‐PPDO. The results of DSC measurement show that the molecular structures determine the thermal behavior of the PVA‐g‐PPDO. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
