The bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate and styrene in the presence of an organically modified clay containing a vinyl group that can be involved in the polymerization produces exfoliated nanocomposites. These nanocomposites have been characterized by X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, mechanical properties, and cone calorimetry. The onset temperature of thermal degradation increases with the mechanical properties. The peak heat release rate is significantly reduced for nanocomposites containing 3 or 5% clay. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 1124–1135, 2003  相似文献

Two methacrylate‐modified clays have been prepared and used to produce nanocomposites of polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) by in situ polymerization. These nanocomposites have been characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), cone calorimetry and the evaluation of mechanical properties. When the clay contains only a single methacrylate unit, the styrene system is exfoliated but methacrylate is intercalated. When two methacrylate units are present on the cation of the clay, both systems are exfoliated. TGA data show that the thermal stability of all the nanocomposites is improved, as expected. The relationships between the fire properties and nanostructure of the nanocomposites are complicated, as shown by cone calorimetry. The conclusions that one may reach using cone calorimetry do not completely agree with those from XRD and TEM. The evaluation of mechanical properties shows an increase in Young's modulus for all nanocomposites along with a decrease in elongation; tensile strength is decreased for methacrylate nanocomposites but increased for styrenics systems. Polymer‐modified clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending and the time to ignition was measured by cone calorimetry at various heat fluxes. Based on these experimental results, a critical mass flux and critical percentage mass loss (pmlcrit) for piloted ignition were identified and validated for both virgin polystyrene and its composites, across a wide range of heating fluxes. Based on the assumption that the polymer degradation kinetics in the heating segment of the cone calorimetry (up to the moment of ignition) and thermogravimetry experiments are similar, and using the pmlcrit, we hypothesized that the onset degradation temperature of the TGA samples (defined here as the temperature at pmlcrit) could be used to estimate the time to sustained ignition in cone calorimetry experiments. The onset degradation temperature and the time to sustained ignition showed a good correlation, regardless of the heating flux used in cone calorimetry experiments. The effect of nanoparticle surface chemistry on the thermal, mechanical, and magnetic properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites with cobalt ferrite nanofillers was studied by comparing nanofillers coated with oleic acid (OA; which does not covalently bond to the PMMA matrix) and 3‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS, which covalently bonds to the PMMA matrix). Thermogravimetric analysis revealed an increase in the thermal degradation temperature of the nanocomposites compared with the neat polymer. The effect of cobalt ferrite nanofiller on the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the nanocomposite was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry. The Tg value of the material increased when the particles were introduced. Dynamic mechanical analysis indicated an increase in the storage modulus of the nanocomposite because of the presence of nanofiller and a shift in the peak of loss tangent toward higher temperature. Magnetic measurements indicated that both nanocomposites had a small hysteresis loop at 300 K and no hysteresis at 400 K. However, estimates of the nanofiller's rotational relaxation times and measurements of the zero field cooled temperature‐dependent magnetization indicate that the observed lack of hysteresis at 400 K is likely because of particle rotation in the polymer matrix. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Covalently bonded layered silicated/polystyrene nanocomposites were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization in the presence of initiator‐modified layered silicate. The resulting nanocomposites had an intercalated and partially exfoliated structure, as confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The thermal properties of the nanocomposites improved substantially over those of neat polystyrene. In particular, a maximum increase of 35.5 °C in the degradation temperature was displayed by these nanocomposites. Additionally, the surface elastic modulus and hardness of these nanocomposites were more than double those of pure polystyrene. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polystyrene (PS)/clay nanocomposites were prepared with two different new intercalation organophilic clays, the phosphonium salt (APP) and the ammonium 4‐(4‐adamantylphenoxy)‐1‐butanamine (APB) salts, by emulsion polymerization technique. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were performed to characterize the layered structures of APB‐ and APP‐treated polymer–clay nanocomposites, and both resulted in exfoliated structures. Molecular weights of PS obtained from these nanocomposites are slightly lower than the virgin PS formed under similar polymerization conditions. Coefficient of thermal expansion showed approximately a 44–55% decrease for APB‐ and APP‐intercalated clay nanocomposites relative to the pure PS. Both Tg and thermal decomposition temperature of the PS component in the nanocomposite are higher than the virgin PS, implying that the presence of clay is able to enhance thermal stabilities of the PS. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel method was developed for fabricating poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT)/BaSO4 nanocomposites using in situ polymerization. A nano‐BaSO4 suspension was prepared by reacting H2SO4 with Ba(OH)2 in 1,3‐propanediol (PDO). The mean size of original nano‐BaSO4 is 15–23 nm. PTT matrix was synthesized by condensation polymerization of bis(3‐hydroxypropyl terephthalate) after the completion of transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) with PDO. It was found that the addition of BaSO4 had little influence on the synthesis of PTT. The properties of nanocomposites with a wide range of BaSO4 fraction were systematically studied. The morphologies of the composites were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which showed that agglomerate structures did not form until BaSO4 content higher than 8 wt%. The thermal properties of the nanocomposites were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The DSC results revealed that the triple endothermic melting phenomenon is only observed for the nanocomposites which contained 4 wt% BaSO4, other samples exhibit double endothermic melting. These results indicated that nano‐BaSO4 could induce a microcrystal to form more perfect morphology and restrain the formation of much thicker lamellar crystallinity, that is, nano‐BaSO4 could induce the formation of more uniform crystallinity. Besides, the crystallization ability of the composites was greatly improved by loading nano‐BaSO4. The TGA results suggested that nano‐BaSO4 slightly increased the maximum‐decomposing‐rate temperature 1 (Tmax1), but markedly increased the maximum‐decomposing‐rate temperature 2 (Tmax2). Furthermore, the steady‐state shear behavior of samples was investigated by a parallel‐plate rheometer. The storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G”) curves shifted to higher modulus upon addition of 2–16 wt% of nano‐BaSO4. All of the samples investigated exhibited the expected shear‐thinning behavior. Proper contents of nano‐BaSO4 would decrease the shear viscosity of nanocomposites, whereas superfluous amounts would greatly increase the viscosity of nanocomposites and the composites which loaded 8 wt% nano‐BaSO4 revealed an equivalent shear viscosity compared to pure PTT. Nature has succeeded in creating numerous bionanocomposites such as bones and teeth consisting of nano‐platelets and biopolymers. Understanding of the mechanisms of formation and of the relation between structure and properties is vital for development of new materials for biomedical and engineering applications. In this work, varying contents of nano‐platelet‐like hydroxyapatite (HAp) has been used to reinforce gelatin (Gel) to produce nanocomposites. The prepared HAp/Gel nanocomposites were characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric (TG/DTG) analyses. XRD, TEM, and FTIR results confirm the synthesis of intercalated and exfoliated nanostructures depending on the amount of gelatin. TG results reveal that the intercalated HAp/gelatin nanocomposites show improved thermal properties as compared to pristine gelatin. The results reported here can be expanded to other HAp–polymer systems, thus paving a new way of designing and fabricating biomemitic nanocomposites for future engineering and particularly for biomedical applications. Summary: Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry have been used to study the thermal and thermo‐oxidative degradation of polystyrene (PS) and a PS–clay nanocomposite. An advanced isoconversional method has been applied for kinetic analysis. Introduction of the clay phase increases the activation energy and affects the total heat of degradation, which suggests a change in the reaction mechanism. The obtained kinetic data permit a comparative assessment of the fire resistance of the studied materials.

We describe a new strategy for preparation of benzoxazine monomers based on in situ preparation of a thiol‐functionalized benzoxazine and successive chemical modification of the thiol moiety. The thiol‐functionalized benzoxazine can be prepared from its precursor bearing two benzoxazine moieties linked by disulfide bond. Reductive cleavage of the disulfide bond of the precursor with using triphenylphosphine as a reducing agent allows successful preparation of the thiol‐functionalized benzoxazine. By performing this reduction process in the presence of epoxides and acrylates, the formation of the thiol moiety and its successive reaction with those electrophiles proceed efficiently to give the corresponding benzoxazines with sulfide moieties. The benzoxazine monomers thus prepared exhibit much higher polymerization ability than those without sulfide moiety. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Thiophenol and p‐nitrothiophenol were evaluated as promoters for the ring opening polymerization of benzoxazine. The ring‐opening polymerization of p‐cresol type monofunctional N‐phenyl benzoxazine 1a with 10 mol % of thiophenols proceeded at 150 °C, leading to the high conversion of 1a more than 95% within 5 h, whereas the polymerization of 1a without thiophenols did not proceed under the same conditions. The promotion effect of the thiophenols on curing of bisphenol‐A type N‐phenyl benzoxazine 1b was also investigated. In the differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analysis of the polymerization of 1b at 150 °C without using any promoters, an exothermic peak attributable to the ring‐opening reaction of benzoxazine was observed after 8 h. In contrast, in the DSC analysis of the polymerization of 1b with addition 20 mol % of p‐nitrothiophenol, an exothermic peak was observed within 2 h, to clarify the significant promoting effect of p‐nitrothiophenol. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated with 2‐pyrrolidinone and n‐dodecyl mercaptan (R‐SH) has been explored. This polymerization system showed “living” characteristics; for example, the molecular weight of the resulting polymers increased with reaction time by gel permeation chromatographic analysis. Also, the polymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR techniques. The polymer end with the iniferter structures was found. By the initial‐rate method, the polymerization rate depended on [2‐pyrrolidinone]1.0 and [R‐SH]0. Combining the structure analysis and the polymerization‐rate expression, a possible mechanism was proposed. n‐Dodecyl mercaptan served dual roles—as a catalyst at low conversion and as a chain‐transfer agent at high conversion. Finally, the thermal properties were studied, and the glass‐transition temperature and thermal‐degradation temperature were, respectively, 25 and 80–100 °C higher than that of the azobisisobutyronitrile system. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Impact‐modified polypropylene (PP)/vermiculite (VMT) nanocomposites toughened with maleated styrene–ethylene butylene–styrene (SEBS‐g‐MA) were compounded in a twin‐screw extruder and injection‐molded. VMT was treated with maleic anhydride, which acted both as a compatibilizer for the polymeric matrices and as a swelling agent for VMT in the nanocomposites. The effects of the impact modifier on the morphology and the impact, static, and dynamic mechanical properties of the PP/VMT nanocomposites were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that an exfoliated VMT silicate layer structure was formed in ternary (PP–SEBS‐g‐MA)/VMT nanocomposites. Tensile tests showed that the styrene–ethylene butylene–styrene additions improved the tensile ductility of the (PP–SEBS‐g‐MA)/VMT ternary nanocomposites at the expense of their tensile stiffness and strength. Moreover, Izod impact measurements indicated that the SEBS‐g‐MA addition led to a significant improvement in the impact strength of the nanocomposites. The SEBS‐g‐MA elastomer was found to be very effective at converting brittle PP/VMT organoclay composites into tough nanocomposites. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The preparation and properties of poly(1‐butene) (PB)/clay nanocomposites are described for the first time. Nanocomposites were prepared with the melt‐intercalation technique, using organically modified clay. The X‐ray diffraction patterns portrayed well‐defined diffraction peaks at higher d‐spacing than pristine clay, confirming the intercalation of polymer in silicate layers. Because PB exhibits time‐dependent polymorphism, the effect of clay on the phase transformation of PB was examined with thermal analysis. The phase transformation from a metastable tetragonal form to a stable hexagonal form was enhanced because of incorporation of layered silicates in the polymer matrix. The nanocomposites exhibited about a 40–140% increase in storage modulus depending on the clay content and significantly lower coefficient of thermal expansion. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Liquid‐crystalline, segmented polyurethanes with methoxy–biphenyl mesogens pendant on the chain extender were synthesized by the conventional prepolymer technique and esterification reaction. Two, side‐chain, liquid‐crystalline (SCLC) polyurethanes with mesogens having spacers of six and eight methylene units were prepared. The structures of the mesogenic units and SCLC polyurethanes were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H NMR. Polymer properties were also examined by solubility tests, water uptakes, and inherent viscosity measurements. Differential scanning calorimetry studies indicated that the transition temperature of the isotropic to the liquid‐crystalline phase decreased with increasing spacer length. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) studies revealed the existence of liquid‐crystalline phases for both SCLC polyurethanes. Polarized optical microscopic investigations further confirmed the thermotropic liquid‐crystalline behaviors and nematic mesophases of both samples. Thermogravimetric analysis displayed better thermal stabilities for both SCLC polymers and indicated that the presence of mesogenic side chains may increase the thermal stability of segmented polyurethanes. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Perfluoro‐1,3‐propanedisulfonic acid (PFPS)/Nafion/silica hybrid particles were prepared by the sol–gel reactions of PFPS with tetraethoxysilane and silica nanoparticles in the presence of Nafion under alkaline conditions. These obtained composites exhibited a good dispersibility and stability in not only water but also traditional organic media such as methanol, ethanol, 1,2‐dichloroethane, tetrahydrofuran, and dimethyl sulfoxide. Dynamic light scattering measurements and field‐emission scanning electron microscopy show that these hybrid particles are nanometer size‐controlled fine particles before and even after calcination at 800 °C. Nafion/silica hybrid nanoparticles were also prepared in the absence of PFPS under similar conditions. The weight of original Nafion markedly dropped around 350 °C and decomposed gradually, reaching 0% around 450 °C, and Nafion in the Nafion/silica nanocomposites exhibited a similar weight loss behavior to that of the original one. However, Nafion/PFPS/silica hybrid nanoparticles were found to exhibit no weight loss corresponding to the contents of Nafion and PFPS in the silica gel matrices even after calcination at 800 °C. It was demonstrated that the pH value (3.77 at 25 °C) of Nafion/PFPS/silica hybrid nanoparticles after calcination is smaller than that (5.66 at 25 °C) before calcination, and this hybrid nanoparticles exhibited a higher proton conductivity (5.8 × 10?3 S/cm at 85 °C) than that (4.1 × 10?3 S/cm at 85 °C) before calcination. In addition, Nafion/PFPS/silica hybrid nanoparticles after calcination at 800 °C were applied to the Friedel‐Crafts acylation of thiophene with acetic anhydride to give the expected 2‐acetylthiophene, of whose yield was similar to that before calcination under similar conditions. These findings suggest that Nafion in PFPS/silica hybrid nanoparticle cores should exhibit a nonflammable characteristic even after calcination at 800 °C to act as an effective acid catalyst. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polycarbonate (PC)/acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) polymer alloy/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared using a direct melt intercalation technique. The pyrolytic degradation and the thermo‐oxidative degradation of the polymer alloy and the nanocomposites were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The kinetic evaluations were performed by the model‐free kinetic analysis and the multivariate non‐linear regression. Apparent kinetic parameters for the overall degradation were calculated. The results show that PC/ABS/MMT nanocomposites have high thermal stability and low flammability. Their pyrolytic degradation and the thermo‐oxidative degradation model are different. The pyrolytic degradation reaction of the polymer is a two‐step parallel reaction model: nth‐order reaction model, and ath‐degree autocatalytic reaction with an nth‐order reaction autocatalytic reaction, whereas the thermal oxidative degradation reaction of the polymer is a two‐step following reaction model: A → B → C of nth‐order reaction model, and autocatalytic reaction model. SU8 has been modified with photoinitiators Rose Bengal, H‐NU 470 and H‐NU 535, to conduct visible light lithography. The thermophysical properties of the lithographically transformed modified SU8 photoresins were investigated. The influence of the concentration of visible light photosensitizer and photoinitiator as well as exposure time to visible laser on thermal stability and curing kinetics were analyzed. Significant differences in the thermophysical properties were observed in these three photoinitiator groups of modified SU8 photoresins. These results provide with usable quantitative information regarding resin formulation to optimize lithography processing parameters, and therefore, the ultimate properties of lithographically formed microstructures. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. X‐ray diffraction method and differential scanning calorimetry analysis have been used to investigate the nonisothermal crystallization of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/poly(ethylene glycol) phosphonates (PEOPAs)‐modified layered double hydroxide (PMLDH) nanocomposites. Effects of cooling rates and PMLDH contents on the nonisothermal crystallization behavior of PHB were explored. These results show that the addition of 2 wt % PMLDH into PHB caused heterogeneous nucleation increasing the crystallization rate and reducing the activation energy. By adding PMLDH into the PHB probably hinder the transport ability of the molecule chains and result in a decreasing crystallity of PHB, thus increasing the activation energy. The correlation among melting behavior, apparent crystallite size, and paracrystalline distortion of PHB/PMLDH nanocomposites has been also discussed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
