We recently presented electron spin resonance spectra of poly(acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene) (ABS) doped with 10‐doxylnonadecane (10DND) and 5‐doxyldecane (5DD) as spin probes. The spectra were measured in three types of ABS that differed in their butadiene contents and methods of preparation. Results for the ABS polymers were evaluated by comparison with similar studies on the homopolymers polybutadiene (PB) and polystyrene (PS) and the copolymers poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (SAN) and poly(styrene‐co‐butadiene) (SB). Only one spectral component was detected for 10DND in PB, PS, SAN, and SB. In contrast, two spectral components differing in their dynamic properties were detected in the ABS samples and were assigned to spin probes located in butadiene‐rich domains (the fast component) and SAN‐rich domains (the slow component). The presence of two spectral components was taken as an indication of microphase separation. In this study, we present details on the dynamics and microphase separation by simulating spectra of 10DND in ABS, PB, PS, and SAN. The simulations are based on a dynamic model defined by the components of the rotational diffusion tensor and the diffusion tilt angle between the symmetry axis of the rotational diffusion tensor and the direction of the nitrogen 2pz atomic orbital. The jump diffusion model led to good agreement with experimental spectra. In this model, the spin probe has a fixed orientation for a given time and then jumps instantaneously to a new orientation. The temperature variation of the rotational correlation time in PB and PS consisted of two dynamic regimes, with different activation energies. The transition temperature at which the change in dynamics occurs (Ttr) is 380 K for PS and 205 K for PB, essentially the same as the corresponding glass‐transition temperatures measured by differential scanning calorimetry. We suggest that Ttr is a better indicator of the glass transition than the temperature at which the total spectral width is 50 G, especially for large probes. The simulation program allowed the determination of the relative intensities of the fast and slow spectral components as a function of temperature; this information was used to clarify the redistribution of the probe above the glass transition of the SAN‐rich component in ABS systems. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To enhance the heat resistance of poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile‐co‐butadiene), ABS, miscibility of poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile), SAN, with poly(styrene‐con‐phenyl maleimide), SNPMI, having a higher glass transition temperature than SAN was explored. SAN/SNPMI blends casted from solvent were immiscible regardless of copolymer compositions. However, SNPMI copolymer forms homogeneous mixtures with SAN copolymer within specific ranges of copolymer composition upon heating caused by upper critical solution temperature, UCST, type phase behavior. Since immiscibility of solvent casting samples can be driven by solvent effects even though SAN/SNPMI blends are miscible, UCST‐type phase behavior was confirmed by exploring phase reversibility. When copolymer composition of SNPMI was fixed, the phase homogenization temperature of SAN/SNPMI blends was increased as AN content in SAN copolymer increased. To understand the observed phase behavior of SAN/SNPMI blend, interaction energies of blends were calculated from the UCST‐type phase boundaries by using the lattice‐fluid theory combined with a binary interaction model. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The graft copolymerization of undecylenic acid onto acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene terpolymer (ABS) was initiated with benzoyl peroxide (BPO) in a 1,2‐dichloroethane solution. IR spectra confirmed that undecylenic acid was successfully grafted onto the ABS backbone. The influence of the concentrations of undecylenic acid, BPO, and ABS on the graft copolymerization was studied. A reaction mechanism was proposed: the grafting most likely took place through the addition of poly(undecylenic acid) radicals to the double bond of the butadiene region of ABS. A monomer cage effect on the graft reaction was observed to depend on the 1.5 power of the monomer concentration from the experimental results of the initial rate of graft copolymerization. The initial rate of graft copolymerization was written as Rp = 1.77 × 10−3[P][I2][M]2.5/([P]+2.75[M]2.5)2. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 39: 486–494, 2001  相似文献

Summary: Polyamide 6 (PA6)/acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) (40/60 w/w) nanocomposites with a novel morphology were prepared by the melt mixing of PA6, ABS and organoclay. The blend nanocomposites had a co‐continuous structure, in which both PA6 and styrene‐acrylonitrile (SAN) were continuous phases. It was found that the toughening rubber particles were only located in the SAN phase and the strengthening clay platelets were selectively dispersed in the PA6 phase. The co‐continuous nanocomposites showed greatly improved mechanical properties over the whole temperature range when compared with the same blend sample without clay.

Thin Ni layers were deposited onto clean polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (SAN) surfaces by a high vacuum thermal evaporation process. The resulting interfaces were studied by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Ni deposition on PMMA changes the relative intensity of the C1s spectra associated with the O CO and C O carbon species, and modifies the shape of the O1s peak, while the Ni evaporation on SAN alters the C1s band intensity assigned to the CN moiety and gives a second N1s band at low binding energies. These observations suggest the formation of new chemical species at the interface between Ni and the PMMA ester group, and between Ni and the SAN nitrile group, which are the most reactive sites on these two polymers. Novel, well‐defined fluorinated polystyrene was synthesized for the first time via the controlled radical polymerization of styrene through a relatively simple process and was characterized with 1H NMR, 19F NMR, and gel permeation chromatography. The surface properties of polystyrene and poly(acrylonitrile‐co‐butadiene‐co‐styrene) films were modified with the obtained polymers. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of the air‐side surface composition of the modified poly(acrylonitrile‐co‐butadiene‐co‐styrene) films showed that fluorine enriched the outermost surface, resulting in fantastic surface properties that came close to those of poly(tetrafluoroethylene). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2‐Phenyl‐2‐[(2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidino)oxy] ethyl 2‐bromopropanoate was successfully used as an initiator in consecutive living radical polymerization routes, such as metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization and nitroxide‐mediated free‐radical polymerization, to produce various types of acrylonitrile‐containing polymers, such as styrene–acrylonitrile, polystyrene‐b‐styrene–acrylonitrile, polystyrene‐b‐poly(n‐butyl acrylate)‐b‐polyacrylonitrile, and polystyrene‐b‐polyacrylonitrile. The kinetic data were obtained for the metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization of styrene–acrylonitrile. All the obtained polymers were characterized with 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We synthesized three partially deuterated polymer samples, namely a poly(ethylene‐alt‐propylene) (EP) alternating copolymer, a poly(styrene‐b‐EP) diblock copolymer (SEP) and a poly(styrene‐b‐EP‐b‐styrene) triblock copolymer (SEPS). The 2H spin–lattice relaxation time, T1, of EP soft segments above their glass transition temperature was measured by solid‐state 2H NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the block copolymers had a fast and a slow T1 component whereas EP copolymer had only a fast component. The fast T1 components for SEP and SEPS are similar to the T1 value of EP above ca 20°C. The slow T1 component for SEP and SEPS exhibited a minimum at 60°C and approached the value of the fast component near the Tg of polystyrene. The motional behavior of the EP units for SEP is similar to that of SEPS over the entire range of temperature. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this article, the miscibility of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) with poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (SAN) containing 25 wt % of acrylonitrile is studied from both a qualitative and a quantitative point of view. The evidences coming from thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimetry) demonstrate that PCL and SAN are miscible in the whole range of composition. The Flory interaction parameter χ1,2 was calculated by the Patterson approximation and the melting point depression of the crystalline phase in the blends; in both cases, negative values of χ1,2 were found, confirming that the system is miscible. The interaction parameter evaluated within the framework of the mean field theory demonstrates that the miscibility of PCL/SAN blends is due to the repulsive interaction between the styrene and acrylonitrile segments in SAN. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(amide–imide)s IIIa–m containing flexible isopropylidene and ether groups in the backbone were synthesized by the direct polycondensation of 4,4′‐[1,4‐phenylenebis(isopropylidene‐1,4‐phenyleneoxy)]dianiline (PIDA) with various bis(trimellitimide)s IIa–m in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) using triphenyl phosphite and pyridine as condensing agents. The resulting poly(amide–imide)s had inherent viscosities in the range of 0.80–1.36 dL/g. Except for those from the bis(trimellitimide)s of p‐phenylenediamine and benzidine, all the polymers could be cast from DMAc into transparent and tough films. They exhibited excellent solubility in polar solvents. The 10% weight loss temperatures of the polymers in air and in nitrogen were all above 495°C, and their Tg values were in the range of 201–252°C. Some properties of poly(amide–imide)s III were compared with those of the corresponding poly(amide–imide)s V prepared from the bis(trimellitimide) of diamine PIDA and various aromatic diamines. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) is a copolymer of styrene and butadiene, and the butadiene unit is composed of cis‐1,4‐, trans‐1,4‐, and 1,2‐components. Filler‐polymer interactions of each component of SBR in silica‐filled SBR compounds were examined by microstructure analysis of the bound and unbound rubbers. The composition ratio of butadiene and styrene units (butadiene/styrene) of the bound rubber was higher than that of the compounded rubber. Of the butadiene units, the 1,2‐component of the bound rubber was more abundant than the cis‐1,4‐ and trans‐1,4‐components. The filler‐polymer interaction of the butadiene unit with silica was stronger than that of the styrene unit, and the interaction of the 1,2‐component was stronger as compared with the others. The butadiene–styrene ratio of the bound rubber of the compounds containing the silane coupling agent was lower than for the compounds without the silane. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(methylphenylsiloxane)–poly(methyl methacrylate) graft copolymers (PSXE-g-PMMA) were prepared by condensation reaction of poly(methylphenylsiloxane)-containing epoxy resin (PSXE) with carboxyl-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and they were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), infrared (IR), and 29Si and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The microstructure of the PSXE-g-PMMA graft copolymer was investigated by proton spin–spin relaxation T2 measurements. The thermal stability and apparent activation energy for thermal degradation of these copolymers were studied by thermogravimetry and compared with unmodified PMMA. The incorporation of poly(methylphenylsiloxane) segments in graft copolymers improved thermal stability of PMMA and enhanced the activation energy for thermal degradation of PMMA. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Binary blends of poly(2,6–dimethyl–1,4–phenylene oxide) (PPE) with various styrene copolymers were investigated. Poly(styrene–co–acrylonitrile) (SAN), poly[styrene–co–(methyl methacrylate)] (SMMA), poly[styrene–co–(acrylic acid)] (SAA) and poly[styrene–co–(maleic anhydride)] (SMA) are only miscible with PPE when the amount of comonomer is rather small. From calculated binary interaction densities it can be concluded that the strong repulsion between PPE and comonomer limits miscibility. In blends of PPE with SAN, as well as with ABS, the inter-facial tension between the blend components is significantly reduced upon addition of polystyrene–block–poly–(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymers (PS–b–PMMA) and polystyrene–block–poly (ethylene–co–butylene)–block–poly–(methyl methacrylate) triblock copolymers (PS–b–PEB–b–PMMA). They show a profound influence on morphology, phase adhesion and mechanical blend properties.  相似文献

Polydisperse hyperbranched polyesters were modified for use as novel multifunctional reversible addition–fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) agents. The polyester‐core‐based RAFT agents were subsequently employed to synthesize star polymers of n‐butyl acrylate and styrene with low polydispersity (polydispersity index < 1.3) in a living free‐radical process. Although the polyester‐core‐based RAFT agent mediated polymerization of n‐butyl acrylate displayed a linear evolution of the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) up to high monomer conversions (>70%) and molecular weights [Mn > 140,000 g mol?1, linear poly(methyl methacrylate) equivalents)], the corresponding styrene‐based system reached a maximum molecular weight at low conversions (≈30%, Mn = 45,500 g mol?1, linear polystyrene equivalents). The resulting star polymers were subsequently used as platforms for the preparation of star block copolymers of styrene and n‐butyl acrylate with a polyester core with low polydispersities (polydispersity index < 1.25). The generated polystyrene‐based star polymers were successfully cast into highly regular honeycomb‐structured microarrays. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the melt intercalation of cation‐exchange clay, mixtures of montmorillonite and poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (SAN) with various acrylonitrile contents were studied to examine the effect of specific interaction. When organic molecules with hydroxyl groups were used as intercalants for the clay, the amount of SAN penetrating the gallery of the layered structure of the clay and the corresponding increase in the gallery height occurred at a much higher rate because of the attractive specific interaction between acrylonitrile groups and polar groups on the clay surface. However, there was a limit to the increase in the gallery height, and the tendency for the gallery height to increase with the acrylonitrile group content disappeared when the acrylonitrile content was greater than 30 wt %, implying that excessive attractive interaction on the clay surfaces and polymer molecules glued the two adjacent silicate layers together; consequently, the increase in the gallery height could not be accomplished. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Specific interactions in blends of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(styrene-co-acry-lonitrile) (SAN) were studied as a function of copolymer composition and blend ratio by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was shown that miscibility occurred within a certain range of copolymer compositions because the presence of PCL reduced the thermodynamically unfavorable repulsion between styrene and acrylonitrile segments in the random copolymer. This effect was observed in terms of a shift to higher frequencies in the 700 cm-1 γ-CH out-of-plane deformation vibration absorption of styrene and in the approximately 2236 cm?1 C?N stretching frequency band in acrylonitrile segments. Specific intermolecular interactions between SAN and PCL were not observed in this study. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The calculations of geminal and vicinal 29Si–1H spin–spin coupling constants across double bond in 15 alkenylmethylsilanes and alkenylchlorosilanes were carried out at the second‐order polarization propagator approach level in a good agreement with experiment. Two structural trends, namely, (i) the geometry of the coupling pathway and (ii) the effect of the electrowithdrawing substituent, have been interpreted in terms of the natural J‐coupling analysis within the framework of the natural bond orbital approach. Thus, the marked difference between cisoidal and transoidal 29Si–1H spin–spin coupling constants across double bond was accounted for the delocalization contributions including bonding and antibonding Si–C and C–H orbitals, whereas the chlorine effect was explained in terms of the steric contributions including bonding Si–Cl orbitals. Poly(methylphenylsiloxane)–poly(methyl methacrylate) interpenetrating polymer networks (PMPS–PMMA IPNs) were prepared by in situ sequential condensation of poly(methylphenylsiloxane) with tetramethyl orthosilicate and polymerization of methyl methacrylate. PMPS–PMMA IPNs were characterized by infrared (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and 29Si and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The mobility of PMPS segments in IPNs, investigated by proton spin–spin relaxation T2 measurements, is seriously restricted. The PMPS networks have influence on the average activation energy Ea,av of MMA segments in thermal degradation at initial conversion. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(methyl methacrylate)–poly(acrylonitrile‐co‐butadiene) (PMMA–NBR) core–shell structured nanoparticles were prepared using a two‐stage semibatch microemulsion polymerization system with PMMA and NBR as the core and shell, respectively. The Gemini surfactant 12‐3‐12 was used as the emulsifier and found to impose a pronounced influence on the formation of core–shell nanoparticles. The spherical morphology of core–shell nanoparticles was observed. It was found that there exists an optimal MMA addition amount, which can result in the minimized size of PMMA–NBR core–shell nanoparticles. The formation mechanism of the core–shell structure and the interaction between the core and shell domains was illustrated. The PMMA–NBR nanosize latex can be used as the substrate for the following direct latex hydrogenation catalyzed by Wilkinson's catalyst to prepare the PMMA–HNBR (hydrogenated NBR) core–shell nanoparticles. The hydrogenation rate is rapid. In the absence of any organic solvent, the PMMA–HNBR nanoparticles with a size of 30.6 nm were obtained within 3 h using 0.9 wt % Wilkinson's catalyst at 130 °C under 1000 psi of H2. This study provides a new perspective in the chemical modification of NBR and shows promise in the realization of a “green” process for the commercial hydrogenation of unsaturated elastomers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New poly(imide–benzoxazole) copolymers were prepared directly from a dianhydride, a diacid chloride, and a bis(o‐diaminophenol) monomer in a two‐step method. In the first step, poly(amic acid–hydroxyamide) precursors were synthesized by low‐temperature solution polymerization in an organic solvent. Subsequently, the thermal cyclodehydration of the poly(amic acid–hydroxyamide) precursors at 350 °C produced the corresponding poly(imide–benzoxazole) copolymers. The inherent viscosities of the precursor polymers were around 0.19–0.33 dL/g. The cyclized poly(imide–benzoxazole) copolymers had glass‐transition temperatures in the range of 331–377 °C. The 5% weight loss temperatures ranged from 524 to 535 °C in nitrogen and from 500 to 514 °C in air. The poly(imide–benzoxazole) copolymers were amorphous, as evidenced by the wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction measurements. The structures of the precursor copolymers and the fully cyclized copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
