The effect of X‐ray irradiation on crystallization of the blend of poly(N‐methyldodecano‐12‐lactam) (PMDL) with 29.5% of statistical copolymer poly(styrene‐stat‐acrylic acid) (PSAA) was studied using DSC, WAXD, and solid‐state 13C NMR methods. Significant acceleration of crystallization was found in the as‐prepared X‐ray irradiated (XI), that is, WAXD‐measured, samples compared with the nonirradiated (NI) ones. In the XI blend, the incubation period was shortened and crystallization proceeded at significantly higher rate. In the asymptote, after 100–120 days, both NI and XI samples reached the same final crystallinity of about 18%. The second DSC runs indicated that the stimulating effect of X‐ray irradiation was eliminated by heating the sample during the first run. The 13C NMR studies have shown that PMDL chains crystallize exclusively in cis conformation on the C? N bond. Both in neat PMDL and in the blend with PSAA, the XI samples contained a significantly higher proportion of cis conformers in amorphous phase than the NI samples. It is suggested that energy absorbed by the sample during the standard WAXD measurement helps overcome the barrier of the trans/cis transition in the PMDL molecules. This opens the way to the formation of a higher number of critical equilibrium nuclei and, finally, results in accelerated crystallization of the XI samples. No irreversible changes were found in the XI samples. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 46: 311–321, 2008  相似文献

The structural changes of polyethylene (PE) and photografted polyethylene‐g‐poly(hexyl methacrylate) (PE‐g‐PHMA) with the mechanical formation of pinholes were evaluated with differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray scanning, and small‐angle X‐ray scanning. The crystallinity and the long period of the lamella increased with pricking under extremely high compression stress. The partial transformation of an orthorhombic crystal into a monoclinic one was also detected. The autonomic healing of pinholes in PE and PE‐g‐PHMA was studied in detail. The degree of healing increased with an increase in the grafting ratio of poly(hexyl methacrylate) (PHMA). Three mechanisms for the healing were investigated and related to the molecular motions of PE and PHMA grafted chains, which were evaluated with dynamic mechanical analyses. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: The temperature dependence of the structure of either cross‐linked or non‐cross‐linked ultra‐high‐molecular‐weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber compacts was studied by synchrotron microbeam wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS), focusing on the fiber‐fiber interface. The phase transition sequence is: melting of the monoclinic phase in the fiber skin, which was completed by 135 °C; melting of the unconstrained orthorhombic phase, by 152 °C; melting of the constrained orthorhombic phase and a orthorhombic‐hexagonal phase transition until 157 °C; and gradual melting of the hexagonal phase, up to 165 °C. Cross‐linking provides additional thermal stabilization.

The mesomorphic isotactic polypropylene was prepared by rapid compression instead of the common method of temperature quenching, and their phase transition under high pressure was investigated in depth by combining wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, small‐angle X‐ray scattering, and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. It was found that annealing under pressure can promote the further arrangement of chain segments of the mesophase toward the crossed state in the orthorhombic γ‐phase, and the long period of the mesophase slightly decreased from 8.2 to 7.2 nm. The kinetics of this meso‐γ transition strongly depends on pressure. As annealing pressure increased, the mobility of molecular segments was reduced, and then the onset and finishing time of phase transition were both delayed significantly. A critical annealing pressure was found between 1.6 and 1.75 GPa, which determines whether the phase transition occurs or not. When pressure reaches 1.75 GPa, mesophase did not transform at all within 120 min. Based on the results, a reasonable mechanism was proposed to show the crystallization process of mesophase under high‐pressure annealing. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. X‐ray fluorescence measurements for O‐containing [polyethylene oxide, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl methyl ether], CO‐containing [polyvinyl methyl ketone, polyethylene terephthalate], N‐containing [poly‐4‐vinylpyridine (P4VP), polyaniline oligomer (PAO)], and S‐containing [polyphenylene sulfide] substances are presented. Carbon Kα X‐ray emission spectra (XES) and X‐ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) are compared with our DFT calculations performed with the Amsterdam density functional (ADF) program. The combined analysis of valence XPS and carbon Kα XES allows us to determine the individual contributions from pσ‐ and pπ‐bonding molecular orbitals of the polymers. The ΔSCF calculations yield the accurate C1s core‐electron binding energies (CEBEs) for all carbon sites of the organic compound. We calculate all CEBEs of the model molecules using the ΔE KS approach. Our simulated C1s photoelectron and C Kα emission spectra are in good agreement with our measurements. We also obtain WD (work function and the other energies) values for the polymers and PAO from the difference between calculated (gas‐phase) and measured (solid) CEBE values. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Highly stereospecific polymerization of a novel sulfur containing aromatic acetylenes, that is, (pn‐octylthiophenyl)acetylene (pOctSPA), was successfully performed using the Rh complex, [Rh(norbornadiene)Cl]2‐TEA, catalyst in the presence of various solvents under mild conditions. The resulting polymers were characterized in detail by 1H NMR, ESR, laser Raman, diffuse reflective UV‐Vis (DRUV‐Vis), and wide angle X‐ray diffraction methods. The data showed that the resulting polymers bear cis‐transoid form, which can induce the cis‐to‐trans isomerization when the cis polymers are subjected to pressure at room temperature under vacuum, breaking rotationally the cis C?C bonds in the main‐chain giving two kinds of π‐radicals, the so‐called cis radical and trans radical as the origin of a polymer magnet like a novel spin glass material. Further, the resulting cis poly(acetylene)s were found to have a helical main‐chain, which is packed in pseudohexagonal crystal called π‐conjugated columnar or nano π‐conjugated columnar as a novel color controllable material. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The stretching‐induced phase transition from tetragonal Form II to hexagonal Form I and the evolution of corresponding crystallite orientation were studied for the butene‐1/ethylene random copolymer with 1.5 mol % ethylene by using a combination of tensile test and in situ wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Three orientation pathways were distinguished for II‐I phase transition, including phase transition accomplishing within off‐axis oriented crystallites (Orientation Pathway 1), phase transition with simultaneous formation of highly oriented crystallites (Orientation Pathway 2), and phase transition occurring within the highly oriented crystallites already formed (Orientation Pathway 3). The kinetics of II‐I transition was correlated with the macroscopic mechanical response, which exhibits a strong dependence on orientation. In Orientation Pathway 1, the triggering of phase transition corresponds to the mechanical yielding. More interestingly, the kinetics of transition exhibits the identical dependence on stress. However, in Orientation Pathways 2 and 3, appearance of the highly oriented crystallites substantially alters transition kinetics, which is tentatively associated with the stress bearing by interstack tie chains. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The (E) isomer in mixtures of (E) and (Z) 1,3‐hexadiene was polymerized with the system CoCl2(PiPrPh2)2‐MAO, a highly active and stereospecific catalyst for the preparation of 1,2 syndiotactic polybutadiene. A new crystalline polymer with a melting point of 109 °C was obtained. The polymer was characterized by IR, NMR (13C, 1H in solution and 13C in the solid‐state), X‐ray diffraction, DSC, GPC and it was found to have a trans‐1,2 syndiotactic structure with a 5.18 ± 0.04 Å fiber periodicity. Since only the (E) isomer was polymerized, at the end of the reaction we were able to separate the (Z) isomer, which was ultimately polymerized with CpTiCl3‐MAO at low temperature, obtaining a low molecular weight, stereoregular polymer that, characterized by IR and NMR methods, was found to exhibit a cis‐1,2 syndiotactic structure, never reported before. Molecular mechanics calculations were carried out on the trans‐1,2 syndiotactic polymer and structural models consistent with the X‐ray diffraction data are proposed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We recently presented a short communication on the preparation of epoxy‐based monoliths possessing highly ordered structures by polymerization induced phase separation based on the spinodal decomposition. In this article, we describe in detail on reaction mechanisms and structural properties of the epoxy‐based monoliths with well‐controlled macropores in the micrometer range. We prepared epoxy‐based monoliths based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, bis(4‐aminocyclohexyl)methane, and polyethylene glycol with a bicontinuous structure by in situ step‐growth polymerization. Different morphology of epoxy‐based monoliths could be obtained by changing formulation of monomers and porogenic solvents. Characterizations of their morphologies were performed using scanning electron microscopy, mercury intrusion porosimetry, small angle X‐ray scattering, and gas adsorption measurement (BET method). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystal structure of the triclinic polymorph of 1‐(4‐hexyloxy‐3‐hydroxyphenyl)ethanone, C14H20O3, differs markedly from that of the orthorhombic polymorph [Manzano et al. (2015). Acta Cryst. C 71 , 1022–1027]. The two molecular structures are alike with respect to their bond lengths and angles, but differ in their spatial arrangement. This gives rise to quite different packing schemes, even if built up by similar chains having the hydroxy–ethanone O—H…O hydrogen‐bond synthon in common. Both phases were found to be related by a first‐order thermally driven phase transformation at 338–340 K, which is discussed in detail. The relative stabilities of both polymorphs are explained on the basis of both the noncovalent interactions operating in each structure and quantum chemical calculations. The polymorphic phase transition has also been studied experimentally by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments, conducted on individual single crystals, Raman spectroscopy and controlled heating under a microscope of individual single crystals, which were further characterized by powder and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction.  相似文献

A series of poly(1,4‐cyclohexylenedimethylene 1,4‐cyclohexanedicarboxylate) (PCCD) samples, characterized by different cis/trans ratio of the 1,4‐cyclohexanedicarbonyl unit, have been synthesized and analyzed by thermogravimetry (TGA), calorimetry (DSC), and X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). The thermal stability results are good and are not affected by the stereochemistry of the 1,4‐cyclohexylene units. On the other hand, the thermal transitions are notably influenced by the cis/trans content. With the increment of the trans content the polymer changes from completely amorphous to semicrystalline material. Tg, Tm, and crystallinity increase. These results suggest that the trans configuration induces a better chain packing and higher symmetry, improving the crystallizability of the samples. The effect of the molecular structure on the thermal properties is analyzed by using a statistical approach. From the effective correlations found between stereochemistry of the C6 rings and transition temperatures it is possible to extrapolate that the configuration of 1,4‐cyclohexylene ring deriving from 1,4‐cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid or dimethyl 1,4‐cyclohexanedicarboxylate results to be the main element responsible for the thermal properties. This is due to the high rigidity of the 1,4‐cyclohexanedicarbonyl unit with respect to 1,4‐cyclohexanedimethyleneoxy unit, deriving from the diol. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystalline structure of polyamide‐12 (PA12) was studied by solid‐state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as well as by synchrotron wide‐ and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS). Isotropic and oriented PA12 showed different NMR spectra ascribed to γ‐ and γ′‐crystalline modifications, respectively. On the basis of the position of the first diffraction peak, the isotropic γ‐form and the oriented γ′‐form were shown to be with hexagonal crystalline lattice at room temperature. When heated, the two PA12 polymorphs demonstrated different behaviors. Above 140 °C, the isotropic γ‐PA12 partially transformed into α‐modification. No such transition was observed with the oriented γ′‐PA12 phase even after annealing at temperatures close to melting. A γ′–γ transition was observed here only after isotropization by melting point. Various structural parameters were extracted from the WAXS and SAXS patterns and analyzed as a function of temperature and orientation: the degree of crystallinity, the d‐spacings, the Bragg's long spacings, the average thicknesses of the crystalline (lc) and amorphous (la) phases, and the linear crystallinity xcl within the lamellar stacks. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystal structure and the electronic properties of YbGa2 realising a CaIn2 type atomic arrangement were characterised at ambient conditions using single crystal X‐ray diffraction data and magnetic susceptibility measurements at ambient pressure. Pressure‐induced changes of structural and electronic properties of YbGa2 were measured by means of angle‐dispersive X‐ray powder diffraction and XANES at the Yb LIII threshold. At pressures above 22(2) GPa, YbGa2 undergoes a structural phase transition into a high pressure modification with a UHg2 type crystal structure. Parallel to the pressure‐induced structural alterations, ytterbium in YbGa2 undergoes an increase of the oxidation state from +2 at ambient conditions to +3 in the high‐pressure phase. Quantum chemical calculations of the Electron‐Localisation‐Function confirm that the phase transition is associated with a conversion of the three‐dimensional gallium network of the low‐pressure crystal structure into two‐dimensional gallium layers in the high‐pressure modification.  相似文献

Segmented poly(ether‐block‐amide) copolymers are typically known as polyamide‐based thermoplastic elastomers consisting of hard, crystallizable polyamide block and flexible, amorphous polyether block. The melting characteristics of a poly(ether‐block‐amide) copolymer melt‐crystallized under various quiescent, isothermal conditions were calorimetrically investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). For such crystallized copolymer samples, their crystalline structures under ambient condition and the structural evolutions upon heating from ambient to complete melting were characterized using ambient and variable‐temperature wide‐angle X‐ray diffractometry (WAXD), respectively. It was observed that dependent of specific crystallization conditions, the copolymer samples exhibited one, two, or three melting endotherms. The ambient WAXD results indicated that all melt‐crystallized copolymer samples only exhibited γ‐form crystals associated with the hexagonal habits of the polyamide homopolymer, whereas variable‐temperature WAXD data suggested that upon heating from ambient, a melt‐crystallized copolymer might exhibit so‐called Brill transition before complete melting. Based on various DSC and variable‐temperature WAXD experimental results obtained in this study, the applicability of different melting mechanisms that might be responsible for multiple melting characteristics of various crystallized PEBA copolymer samples were discussed. It was postulated that the low (T m1) endotherm was primarily because of the disruption of less thermally stable, short‐range ordered structure of amorphous polyamide segments of the copolymer, which was only formed after the completion of primary crystallization via so‐called annealing effects. The intermediate (Tm2) and high (Tm3) endotherms were attributed to the melting of primary crystals within polyamide crystalline microdomains of the copolymer. The appearance of these two melting endotherms might be somehow complicated by thermally induced Brill transition. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The structure evolution of the oriented layer (skin) and unoriented layer (core) from injection‐molded isotactic polypropylene samples upon uniaxial drawing is probed by in situ synchrotron X‐ray scattering. The X‐ray data analysis approach, called “halo method”, is used to semiquantitatively identify the transformation process of crystal phase upon uniaxial drawing. The results verify the validation of the stress‐induced crystal fragmentation and recrystallization process in the deformation of the injection‐molded samples under different temperatures. Furthermore, the end of strain softening region in the engineering stress‐strain curves explicitly corresponds to the transition point from the stress‐induced crystal fragmentation to recrystallization process. Basically, the skin and core layers of the injection‐molded parts share the similar deformation mechanism as aforementioned. The stretching temperature which dramatically affects the relative strength between the entanglement‐induced tie chains and the adjacent crystalline lamellae determines the crystal structural evolution upon drawing. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystal structure of the ambient‐pressure phase of vanadyl pyrophosphate, (VO)2P2O7, has been precisely determined at 120 K from synchrotron X‐ray diffraction data measured on a high‐quality single crystal. The structure refinement unambiguously establishes the orthorhombic space group Pca21 as the true crystallographic symmetry. Moreover, it improves the accuracy of previously published atomic coordinates by one order of magnitude, and provides reliable anisotropic displacement parameters for all atoms. Along the a axis, the structure consists of infinite two‐leg ladders of vanadyl cations, (VO)2+, which are separated by pyrophosphate anions, (P2O7)4?. Parallel to the c axis, the unit cell comprises two alternating crystallographically inequivalent chains of edge‐sharing VO5 square pyramids bridged by PO4 double tetrahedra. No structural phase transition has been observed in the temperature range between 300 and 120 K.  相似文献

A photochromic diarylethene, 1,2‐bis(5‐phenyl‐2‐propyl‐3‐thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene ( 1a ), was found to have two polymorphic crystal forms, α‐ and β‐crystals. From X‐ray crystallographic analysis, the space groups of α‐ and β‐crystals were determined to be P21/c and C2/c, respectively. The difference between two crystal forms is ascribed to the orientation of two of four molecules in the unit cell. The thermodynamic phase transition from α‐ to β‐forms occurred via a crystal‐to‐crystal process, as confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry measurements, optical microscopic observations in the reflection mode and under crossed Nicols, and powder X‐ray diffraction measurements. The movement of the molecules in the crystal was evaluated by analyzing the change of face indices before and after the phase transition.  相似文献

The molecular orientation distribution of poly(p‐dioxanone) (PPDX) uniaxially oriented commercial fibers was determined by polarized Raman spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction. The order parameters 〈P200〉 and 〈P400〉 of the orientation distribution function were determined by polarized Raman spectroscopy. For the C?O stretching band, the values of 〈P200〉 and 〈P400〉 obtained are equal to ?0.40 ± 0.04 and 0.28 ± 0.04, respectively. These results clearly indicate that the carbonyl groups are highly oriented perpendicular to the fiber axis. X‐ray diffraction led to a fiber repeat value of 0.628 nm for these samples, and to 〈P200〉 and 〈P400〉 values of 0.93 and 0.82, respectively, for the c‐axis orientation, indicating a high orientation in the draw direction of the fibers. A Monte‐Carlo conformational search led to 20 low‐energy conformations, but only one of these was found compatible with both the fiber repeat and the angle between the C?O bond and the fiber axis. This conformation, a 21 helix with a tg?ttg? succession of torsion angles, is proposed as the existing conformation in the crystalline state. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of new side‐chain cholesteric elastomers derived from cholesteryl 4‐(10‐undecylen‐1‐yloxy)‐4′‐ethoxybenzoate and phenyl 4,4′‐bis(10‐undecylen‐1‐yloxybenzoyloxy‐p‐ethoxybenzoate) was synthesized. The chemical structures of the monomers were confirmed by elemental analyses, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. The mesomorphic properties of elastomers were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarizing optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction measurements. The influence of the content of the crosslinking unit on the phase behavior of the elastomers was examined. Monomer M1 showed a cholesteric phase, and M2 displayed smectic and nematic phases. The elastomers containing <15 mol % of the crosslinking units revealed reversible mesomorphic phase transition, wide mesophase temperature ranges, and high thermal stability. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of molecular characteristics and processing conditions on melt‐drawing behavior of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW‐PE) are discussed, based on a combination of in situ X‐ray measurement and stress–strain behavior. The sample films of metallocene‐ and Ziegler‐catalyzed UHMW‐PEs with a similar viscosity average MW of ~107 were prepared by compression molding at 180 °C. Stress profiles recorded at 160 °C above the melting temperature of 135 °C exhibited a plateau stress region for both films. The relative change in the intensities of the amorphous scattering recorded on the equator and on the meridian indicated the orientation of amorphous chains along the draw axis with increasing strain. However, there was a substantial difference in the subsequent crystallization into the hexagonal phase, reflecting the molecular characteristics, that is, MW distribution of each sample film. Rapid crystallization into the hexagonal phase occurred at the beginning point of the plateau stress region in melt‐drawing for metallocene‐catalyzed UHMW‐PE film. In contrast, gradual crystallization into the hexagonal phase occurred at the middle point of the plateau stress region for the Ziegler‐catalyzed film, suggesting an ease of chain slippage during drawing. These results demonstrate that the difference in the MW distribution due to the polymerization catalyst system dominates the phase development mechanism during melt‐drawing. The effect of the processing conditions, that is, the including strain rate and drawing temperature, on the melt‐drawing behavior is also discussed. The obtained results indicate that the traditional temperature–strain rate relationship is effective for transient crystallization in to the hexagonal phase during melt‐drawing, as well as for typically oriented crystallization during ultradrawing in the solid state. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
