The crystalline–noncrystalline structure and its structural changes from thermal treatments for ethylene ionomers have been investigated with solid‐state 13C and 23Na NMR spectroscopy. 13C spin–lattice relaxation time (T1C) measurements reveal that as‐received ethylene ionomers have much enhanced molecular mobility in the crystalline region in comparison with conventional polyethylene samples. By appropriate annealing, however, polyethylene‐like morphological features reflecting T1C behavior can also be observed. 13C spin–spin relaxation time (T2C) measurements for the noncrystalline region reveal the existence of two components with different T2C values, and these two components have been assigned to the crystalline–amorphous interfacial and rubbery–amorphous components. These results indicate that the structure of the major part of the noncrystalline region in the ethylene ionomers is similar to that of bulk‐crystallized polyethylene samples, regardless of possible ionic aggregates. The origin of the lower temperature endothermic peak in the heating process of the differential scanning calorimetry curve observed for the as‐received sample has also been examined somewhat in detail. As a result, it is proposed that the melting of smaller crystallites produced during storage at room temperature is the origin of the lower temperature peak. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The phase structure of a series of ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymers has been investigated by solid‐state wide‐line 1H NMR and solid‐state high‐resolution 13C NMR spectroscopy. Not only the degree of crystallinity but the relative contents of the monoclinic and orthorhombic crystals within the crystalline region varied with the vinyl acetate (VA) content. Biexponential 13C NMR spin–lattice relaxation behavior was observed for the crystalline region of all samples. The component with longer 13C NMR spin–lattice relaxation time (T1) was attributed to the internal part of the crystalline region, whereas the component with shorter 13C NMR T1 to the mobile crystalline component was located between the noncrystalline region and the internal part of the crystalline region. The content of the mobile crystalline component relative to the internal part of the crystalline region increased with the VA content, showing that the 13C NMR spin–lattice relaxation behavior is closely related to the crystalline structure of the copolymers. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We employed high‐resolution 13C cross‐polarization/magic‐angle‐spinning/dipolar‐decoupling NMR spectroscopy to investigate the miscibility and phase behavior of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends. The spin–lattice relaxation times of protons in both the laboratory and rotating frames [T1(H) and T(H), respectively] were indirectly measured through 13C resonances. The T1(H) results indicate that the blends are homogeneous, at least on a scale of 200–300 Å, confirming the miscibility of the system from a differential scanning calorimetry study in terms of the replacement of the glass‐transition‐temperature feature. The single decay and composition‐dependent T(H) values for each blend further demonstrate that the spin diffusion among all protons in the blends averages out the whole relaxation process; therefore, the blends are homogeneous on a scale of 18–20 Å. The microcrystallinity of PVC disappears upon blending with PMMA, indicating intimate mixing of the two polymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This low field NMR study established the correlation between the degree of crosslinking in rigid model systems to the proton spin lattice relaxation time (T1) measured. For three model epoxy samples, our data have shown that as the number of crosslinks increases the T1 minima shift toward higher temperatures. In addition, the magnitude of the T1 minimum is also observed to shift to higher values as a function of crosslinks formed. These trends are consistent with the predictions of the Bloembergen, Purcell, and Pound analysis. For these highly crosslinked systems, it was necessary to incorporate the Fuoss Kirkwood distribution function for describing the coupled dynamics of the connected individual monomer units of each crosslink. By fitting the spin lattice relaxation data at different temperatures to the Fuoss Kirkwood modified BPP theory, the average activation energy for the molecular motion and the breadth of the relaxation spectrum were obtained. For these model systems, the increase in the activation energy to achieve mobility and the broadening of relaxation distribution have also been determined quantitatively. The results of this study provide the foundation for using T1 to analyze the crosslinking process of polymeric systems. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Thermoresponsive colloidal microgels were prepared by polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in the presence of a crosslinking monomer, N,N‐methylenebisacrylamide, in water with varying concentrations (<CMC) of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS). Volume phase transitions of the prepared microgels were studied in D2O by 1H NMR spectroscopy including the measurements of spin–lattice (T1) and spin–spin (T2) relaxation times for the protons of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) at temperature range 22–50 °C. In addition, microcalorimetry, turbidometry, dynamic light scattering, and electrophoretic mobility measurements were used to characterize the aqueous microgels. As expected, increasing SDS concentration in the polymerization batch decreased the hydrodynamic size of an aqueous microgel. Structures with high mobilities at temperatures above the LCST of PNIPAM were observed in the microgels prepared with small amount of SDS, as indicated by the relaxation times of different PNIPAM protons. It was concluded that the high mobility at high temperatures is in connection to a mobile surface layer with polyelectrolyte nature and with high local LCST. High SDS concentration in the synthesis was observed to prevent the formation of permanent, solid PNIPAM particles. The results from different characterization methods indicated that PNIPAM microgels prepared in high SDS concentrations appear to be more homogeneously structured than their correspondences prepared in low SDS concentration. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Terpolymers composed of Nn‐propylacrylamide (NPAAm), butyl methacrylate (BMA), and N,N‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) were prepared in an attempt to investigate the temperature‐induced phase transition and its mechanism. Poly(NPAAm) showed the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) around 24°C in water. With the incorporation of DEAEMA with NPAAm, the LCST change was characterized by an initial increase. However, the LCST was shifted to the lower temperature at the later stage. This might be explained in terms of hydrophilic/hydrophobic contribution of DEAEMA to the LCST. The swelling behavior of copolymer gel in the various solvents and spin‐lattice relaxation time (T1) study by NMR strongly suggested the hydrophilic/hydrophobic contribution of DEAEMA to the LCST depending on the local environment. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. For asymmetric guest molecules in urea, the end‐groups of two adjacent guest molecules may arrange in three different ways: head–head, head–tail and tail–tail. Solid‐state 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy is used to study the structural properties of 1‐bromodecane in urea. It is found that the end groups of the guest molecules are randomly arranged. The dynamic characteristics of 1‐bromodecane in urea inclusion compounds are probed by variable‐temperature solid‐state 2H NMR spectroscopy (line shapes, spin–spin relaxation: T2, spin‐lattice relaxation: T1Z and T1Q) between 120 K and room temperature. The comparison between the simulation and experimental data shows that the dynamic properties of the guest molecules can be described in a quantitative way using a non‐degenerate three‐site jump process in the low‐temperature phase and a degenerate three‐site jump in the high‐temperature phase, in combination with the small‐angle wobbling motion. The kinetic parameters can be derived from the simulation. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The miscibility and thermal properties of poly(N‐phenyl‐2‐hydroxytrimethylene amine)/poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PHA/PVP) blends were examined by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), high‐resolution solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that PHA is miscible with PVP, as shown by the existence of a single composition‐dependent glass transition temperature (Tg) in the whole composition range. The DSC results, together with the 13C crosspolarization (CP)/magic angle spinning (MAS)/high‐power dipolar decoupling (DD) spectra of the blends, revealed that there exist rather strong intermolecular interactions between PHA and PVP. The increase in hydrogen bonding and in Tg of the blends was found to broaden the line width of CH—OH carbon resonance of PHA. The measurement of the relaxation time showed that the PHA/PVP blends are homogeneous at least on the scale of 1–2 nm. The proton spin‐lattice relaxation in both the laboratory frame and the rotating frame were studied as a function of the blend composition, and it was found that blending did not appreciably affect the spectral densities of motion (sub‐Tg relaxation) in the mid‐MHz and mid‐KHz frequency ranges. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that PHA has rather good thermal stability, and the thermal stability of the blend can be further improved with increasing PVP content. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The effect of the repeated unit length on the substantially increasing molecular motion and entropy change (?TΔSm) of polymer blends was investigated with solid‐state 13C NMR and differential scanning calorimetry within a miscible window. The hydrogen‐bonding strength, from the formation of the phenolic–polyester interaction, was not high enough to overcome the breaking‐off of the self‐association of the phenolic. With respect to the increasing repeated unit length, the polyester resonance intensity of the solid‐state 13C NMR spectra was weakened because of the reduction in the cross‐polarization efficiency in highly mobile samples. The glass‐transition temperature of the blend and the proton spin–lattice relaxation time from NMR experiments were also reduced. The effect of the reduced hydrogen‐bonding strength on blending brought about a tendency of higher entropy (?TΔSm) and higher molecular mobility of the blend. Accordingly, poly(decamethylene adipate) possessed the longest repeated unit length and exhibited the most mobile one in this phenolic/polyester blend family. The molecular segmental motion and entropy progressively increased while the repeated unit length of the guest polymers increased within a miscible window. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Monodisperse porous particles of poly(divinylbenzene) prepared by the activated swelling method have been investigated by solid‐state 13C crosspolarization magic‐angle spinning (CPMAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation measurements. Homopolymeric combinations of two porogens (toluene and 2‐ethylhexanoic acid) and two monomers (meta‐ and para‐divinylbenzene) were studied. Residual vinyl groups were systematically reacted with increasing amounts of bromine, producing 20 different polymers samples for which we measured crosspolarization times, TCH, proton rotating frame spin‐lattice relaxation, T, 13C spin‐lattice relaxation, T, and proton spin‐lattice relaxation, T. These parameters were chosen to reflect expected changes in a wide range of frequencies of motion as a function of structure. Relative differences in the molecular mobility of the major functional groups (aromatic, vinyl and aliphatic) is related to initial reactants used, vinyl concentration, relative reactivity of vinyl groups, distribution of vinyl groups, pore structure, and degree of crosslinking. Variable temperature 1H combined rotation and multiple pulse NMR (CRAMPS) was used to derive activation energies for selected samples via measurement of the proton spin‐lattice relaxation time, T. Irreversible thermal effects were observed in ambient temperature relaxation after heating to temperatures in the range of 393–418 K. Simple univariate statistical analyses failed to reveal consistent correlations among the known variables. However, the application of more sophisticated multivariate and neural network analyses allowed excellent structure–property predictions to be made from the relaxation time data. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The temperature and pressure dependences of 35Cl nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) frequency and spin–lattice relaxation time (T1) were investigated for 1‐chloro‐2,4‐dinitrobenzene and 1,2‐dichloro‐3‐nitrobenzene. T1 was measured in the temperature range 77–300 K. Furthermore, the NQR frequency (ν) and T1 for these compounds were measured as a function of pressure up to 5.1 kbar at 300 K. Relaxation was found to be due to the torsional motion of the molecule and the reorientation motion of the nitro group. By analysing the temperature dependence of T1, the activation energy for the reorientation motion of the nitro group was obtained. The temperature dependence of the average torsional lifetimes of the molecules and the transition probabilities W1 and W2 for the Δm = ±1 and Δm = ±2 transitions, were also obtained. Both compounds showed a non‐linear variation of NQR frequency with pressure. The pressure coefficients were observed to be positive. A thermodynamic analysis of the data was carried out to determine the constant‐volume temperature coefficients of the NQR frequency. The spin–lattice relaxation time T1 for both the compounds was found to be weakly dependent on pressure, showing that the relaxation is mainly due to the torsional motions. This article establishes the processing–microstructure–motion–property relationship of high‐speed melt‐spun nylon‐6 fibers. From solid‐state 1H NMR T (spin–lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame) relaxation studies, all nylon‐6 fibers spun at 4500–6100 m/min showed three‐component exponential decay with the time constants T1ρ,I, T1ρ,II, and T1ρ,III, indicating that there existed three different motional phases. These phases were assigned to immobile crystalline, intermediate rigid amorphous, and mobile amorphous regions. The determination of the correlation time (τc) of the respective phases provided information about the local molecular mobility of each phase with respect to the spinning speed. As the spinning speed increased, τc of the crystalline region increased (4500–5200 m/min) and then reached a plateau. However, τc for the rigid amorphous region increased from 5200 m/min onward, indicating that the rigid amorphous chains were more oriented and constrained in the spinning speed range of 5500–6100 m/min. The drastic increase of the maximum thermal stress for all fibers from 5500 to 6100 m/min was coincident with the τc characteristics of the rigid amorphous region. The significant increase in tenacity and Young's modulus and the large decrease in elongation at break at 5500–6100 m/min were also in good agreement with the local molecular motion of the intermediate rigid amorphous phase in the nylon‐6 fibers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The effects of electron irradiation on the molecular chemical structure, conformation, mobility, and phase transition of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) and trifluoroethylene (TrFE) copolymer have been investigated with variable‐temperature, solid‐state 19F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It has been found that electron irradiation converts all‐trans conformations of both VDF‐rich and TrFE‐containing segments into dynamically mixed trans–gauche conformations accompanied by a simultaneous ferroelectric‐to‐paraelectric (or amorphous) transition. The variable‐temperature 19F magic‐angle‐spinning spectra results show that the paraelectric phase melts at much lower temperatures in irradiated films than in an unirradiated sample. Moreover, 19F NMR relaxation data (spin–lattice relaxation times in both the laboratory and rotating frames) reveal that electron irradiation enhances the molecular motion in paraelectric regions, whereas the molecular motion in a high‐temperature amorphous melt (>100 °C) is more constrained in irradiated films. Besides these physical changes, electron irradiation also induces the formation of several CF3 groups. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 1714–1724, 2006  相似文献

Blends of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with Poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) were investigated by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and high‐resolution solid‐state 13C cross‐polarization/magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The intermolecular interactions between PVP and PVC are weaker than the self‐association of PVP and the inclusion of the miscible PVC results in the decreased self‐association of PVP chains, which was evidenced by the observation of high‐frequency shift of amide stretching vibration bands of PVP with inclusion of PVC. This result was further substantiated by the study of 13C CP/MAS spectra, in which the chemical shift of carbonyl resonance of PVP was observed to shift to a high field with inclusion of PVC, indicating that the magnetic shielding of the carbonyl carbon nucleus is increased. The proton spin‐lattice relaxation time in the laboratory frame (T1 (H)) and the proton spin‐lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame (T(H)) were measured as a function of the blend composition to give the information about phase structure. It is concluded that the PVC and PVP chains are intimately mixed on the scale of 20–30Å. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 37: 2412–2419, 1999  相似文献

The 50% increased permeability after annealing of semicrystalline poly(ethylene/vinylacetate) containing 3 mol % vinylacetate is linked to increased mobility in the amorphous phase, as identified by line‐narrowing of 1H wideline nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and by reduced cross‐polarization efficiency in 13C NMR. Other morphological parameters, such as crystallinity, measured as 30 to 35% by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and NMR, are hardly changed by annealing. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering and NMR studies, using spin diffusion as well as T and T1 relaxation, detected only a small increase in crystallite thickness. The annealing‐induced enhancement in segmental mobility in the amorphous regions corresponds to a temperature shift of about 10 K, from which an increase of the motional rate by a factor of 2 is estimated, and which can account for the enhancement in the permeability. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The heterogeneous higher order structure and molecular motion in a single crystalline film of a vinylidene fluoride (VDF) and trifluoroethylene (TrFE) copolymer with 73 mol % VDF was investigated with the 1H–13C cross‐polarization/magic‐angle spinning NMR technique. A transient oscillation was observed in plots of the 13C peak intensity versus the contact time for the CH2, CHF, and CF2 groups. On the basis of the extended cross‐relaxation theory of spin diffusion, we determined that the oscillation behavior was caused by the TrFE‐rich segments in the chain and that the crystal consisted of VDF‐rich and TrFE‐rich domains. The former had TrFE‐rich segments in VDF and TrFE fractions of 0.24 and 0.27, respectively, and the latter had VDF‐rich segments in a VDF fraction of 0.49. The spin–lattice relaxation time T1ρH in the rotating frame for each group was minimal in the three temperature regions of β, αb, and αc (↑) on heating and in the two temperature regions of α1D and αc (↓) on cooling. The αc (↑) and αc (↓) processes depended on the first‐order ferroelectric phase‐transition regions on heating and cooling, respectively. The motional modes for the other processes were confirmed by the T1ρH minimum behavior of the VDF and TrFE groups in the TrFE‐rich domain and the VDF‐rich segments in the VDF‐rich domain. The β and αb processes were attributed to the flip–flop motion of the TrFE‐rich segments and the competitive motion of the TrFE‐ and VDF‐rich segments in the ferroelectric phase, respectively. The α1D process was due to the one‐dimensional diffusion motion of the conformational defects along the chain in the paraelectric phase, accompanied by the trans and gauche transformation of the VDF conformers of ttg+tg? and g+tg?tt. The effect of the competitive motion of the TrFE‐rich segment on the thermal stability of the VDF‐rich segment in the chain near the Curie temperature was examined. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nuclear spin–lattice (T1) and spin–spin (T2) relaxation times provide versatile information about the dynamics and structure of substances, such as proteins, polymers, porous media, and so forth. Multidimensional experiments increase the information content and resolution of NMR relaxometry, but they also multiply the measurement time. To overcome this issue, we present an efficient strategy for a single‐scan measurement of a 2D T1T2 correlation map. The method shortens the experimental time by one to three orders of magnitude as compared to the conventional method, offering an unprecedented opportunity to study molecular processes in real‐time. We demonstrate that, despite the tremendous speed‐up, the T1T2 correlation maps determined by the single‐scan method are in good agreement with the maps measured by the conventional method. The concept of the single‐scan T1T2 correlation experiment is applicable to a broad range of other multidimensional relaxation and diffusion experiments.  相似文献

Blends of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(p‐vinylphenol) (PVPh) were prepared from N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) and ethanol solutions. The DMF‐cast blends exhibited single Tg's, as shown by modulated differential scanning calorimetry, whereas the ethanol‐cast blends had double Tg's. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that there was a specific interaction between PAA and PVPh in the DMF‐cast blends. The single‐Tg blends cast from DMF showed single‐exponential decay behavior for the proton spin–lattice relaxation in both the laboratory frame and the rotating frame, indicating that the two polymers mixed intimately on a scale of 2–3 nm. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigated the dynamics and structure of the aliphatic side chains of a randomly grafted copolymer, obtained through the chemical modification of poly(epichlorohydrin) with potassium 3,4,5‐tris(dodecyloxy)benzoate, with solid‐state 13C NMR. Below 283 K, the aliphatic chains partially crystallized in an all‐anti conformation. The calorimetric data were compatible with an orthorhombic packing. Below 323 K, the polymer exhibited a columnar mesophase. Spin–lattice relaxation times were determined in this temperature range and at 333 K, that is, in the isotropic phase. In the liquid‐crystalline state, some carbons exhibited a double decay in the spin–lattice relaxation, and this was attributed to presence of the liquid‐crystalline phase. This hypothesis was supported by a conformational analysis performed by molecular modeling. The activation energies of the relaxation processes in the mesophase were also estimated. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 2099–2111, 2005  相似文献
