Small‐angle and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering and anomalous small‐angle X‐ray scattering were used to investigate proton‐conducting membranes prepared by radiation‐induced styrene grafting and sulfonation of commercial poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF‐g‐PS) films. The membranes retain the lamellar and highly oriented structure of the original PVDF films even through excessive grafting and sulfonation. The sulfonate groups aggregate in the central part of the amorphous layers, where they form a weakly ordered structure that does not show any preferred orientation. This structure is suggested to be lamellar with alternate metal‐sulfonated hydrate and PVDF‐g‐PS layers. The lamellar period is 15.1 Å. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The possibility of developing low‐cost commercial grafted and sulfonated Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF‐g‐PSSA) membranes as proton exchange membranes for fuel cell applications have been investigated. PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes were systematically prepared and examined with the focus of understanding how the polymer microstructure (degree of grafting and sulfonation, ion‐exchange capacity, etc) affects their methanol permeability, water uptake, and proton conductivity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize the changes of the membrane's microstructure after grafting and sulfonation. The results showed that the PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes exhibited good thermal stability and lower methanol permeability. The proton conductivity of PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes was also measured by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method. It was found that the proton conductivity of PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes depends on the degree of sulfonation. All the sulfonated membranes show high proton conductivity at 92°C, in the range of 27 to 235 mScm−1, which is much higher than that of Nafion212 (102 mScm−1 at 80°C). The results indicated that the PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes are particularly promising membranes to be used as polymer electrolyte membranes due to their excellent stability, low methanol permeability, and high proton conductivity.  相似文献

The single-step synthesis of proton conducting poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) graft copolymer electrolytes is demonstrated. The graft copolymers of PVDF backbone with poly(sulfopropyl methacrylate) (PVDF-g-PSPMA) and poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PVDF-g-PSSA) were synthesized using PVDF as a macroinitiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy show that the “grafting from” method using ATRP was successful and the maximum grafting degrees were 35 and 25 wt% for PVDF-g-PSPMA and PVDF-g-PSSA, respectively. The IEC values were 0.63 and 0.45 meq/g, the water uptakes were 46.8 and 33.4 wt% and the proton conductivities were 0.015 and 0.007 S/cm at room temperature, for PVDF-g-PSPMA and PVDF-g-PSSA, respectively. Both membranes exhibited excellent thermal stability up to around 350 °C, verified by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA).  相似文献

Well defined graft copolymers are prepared by “grafting from” atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) at room temperature (30 °C). The experiments were aimed at grafting methacrylates and styrene at latent initiating sites of polystyrene. For this purpose, the benzylic hydrogen in polystyrene was subjected to allylic bromination with N‐bromosuccinimide and azobisisobutrylnitirle to generate tertiary bromide ATRP initiating sites (Br? C? PS). The use of Br? C? PS with lesser mol % of bromide initiating groups results in better control and successful graft copolymerization. This was used to synthesize a series of new graft copolymers such as PS‐g‐PBnMA, PS‐g‐PBMA, PS‐g‐GMA, and PS‐g‐(PMMA‐b‐PtBA) catalyzed by CuBr/PMDETA system, in bulk, at room temperature. The polymers are characterized by GPC, NMR, FTIR, TEM, and TGA. Graft copolymerization followed by block polymerization enabled the synthesis of highly branched polymer brush, in which the grafting density can be adjusted by appropriate choice of bromide concentration in the polystyrene. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of proton exchange membranes have been prepared by the preirradiation grafting method. Styrene was grafted onto a matrix of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) after electron beam irradiation. Part of the samples was crosslinked with divinylbenzene (DVB) or bis(vinylphenyl)ethane (BVPE). Subsequent sulfonation gave membranes grafted with poly(styrene sulfonic acid) and marked PVDF‐g‐PSSA. It was found that the intrinsic crystallinity of the matrix decreased in both the grafting and the sulfonation reaction in all the membranes. The graft penetration and the ion conductivity are influenced strongly by the crosslinker. The ion conductivity is considerably lower in crosslinked membranes than in noncrosslinked ones. Generally, the mechanical strength decreases with crosslinking. The membranes show a regular phase separated structure in which the sulfonated grafts are incorporated in the amorphous parts of the matrix polymer. The phase separated domains are small, of the order of magnitude of 100–250 nm. These were resolved on transmission electron micrographs and on atomic force images but could not be resolved with microprobe Raman spectroscopy. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) and ethyl methacrylate (EMA) using copper‐based atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) at ambient temperature (30 °C) using various initiators has been investigated with the aim of achieving control over molecular weight distribution. The effect of variation of concentration of the initiator, ligand, catalyst, and temperature on the molecular weight distribution and kinetics were investigated. No polymerization at ambient temperature was observed with N,N,N′,N′,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) ligand. The rate of polymerization exhibited 0.86 order dependence with respect to 2‐bromopropionitrile (BPN) initiator. The first‐order kinetics was observed using BPN as initiator, while curvature in first‐order kinetic plot was obtained for ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate (EBiB) and methyl 2‐bromopropionate (MBP), indicating that termination was taking place. Successful polymerization was also achieved with catalyst concentrations of 25 and 10% relative to initiator without loss of control over polymerization. The optimum [bpy]0/[CuBr]0 molar ratio for the copolymerization of AN and EMA through ATRP was found to be 3/1. For three different in‐feed ratios, the variation of copolymer composition (FAN) with conversion indicated toward the synthesis of copolymers having slight changes in composition with conversion. The high chain‐end functionality of the synthesized AN‐EMA copolymers was verified by further chain extension with methyl acrylate and styrene. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is known for its biocompatibility, piezo and pyro‐electricity, and membrane forming capability. In order to tune its properties, modification through grafting from approach by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is preferred. Hydrophilic polymers like poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate, poly(methacrylic acid), poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA), and so forth have been anchored from PVDF backbone in order to make permeation of water molecules through the PVDF based membranes. The successful solution grafting of PDMAEMA chains from PVDF backbone by ATRP resulted appreciable graft conversion and hence its bulk properties showed a significant change. This water soluble graft copolymer shows incredible mechanical and adhesive properties. PVDF‐g‐poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) generates honey‐comb porous film using “breath figure” technique. Recently, they have used further improvement of grafting where model ATRP initiators are anchored using atom transfer radical coupling and used them as macroinitiators for grafting. This approach simplified the grafting reactions even more and enabled successful grafting of a large number of monomers under relatively less drastic conditions with appreciable conversion compared with the previous conditions. This technique has resulted interesting solution properties, ion and electron conducting PVDF, antifouling membrane, super glue and super tough materials, capable of generating metal nanoparticles tunable with pH and temperature. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New supported catalytic systems based on the immobilization of a ligand onto supported (co)polymers were prepared, allowing copper immobilization onto a solid support during the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA). These supported catalysts were elaborated by the ATRP of 2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethyl‐5‐oxazolone and/or styrene onto a Wang resin initiator. Two different approaches were used, involving well‐defined architectures synthesized by ATRP. First, a supported electrophilic homopolymer [Wang‐g‐poly(2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethyl‐5‐oxazolone)] was synthesized to obtain an azlactone ring at each repetitive unit, and a supported statistical copolymer [Wang‐g‐poly(2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethyl‐5‐oxazolone‐stat‐styrene)] was synthesized to introduce a distance between the azlactone rings. The azlactone‐based (co)polymers were then modified by a reaction with N,N,N′,N′‐tetraethyldiethylenetriamine (TEDETA) to create supported complexing sites for copper bromide. The ATRP of MMA was studied with these supported ligands, and a first‐order kinetic plot was obtained, but high polydispersity indices of the obtained poly(methyl methacrylate) were observed (polydispersity index > 2). On the other hand, the supported ATRP of styrene was performed, followed by the nucleophilic substitution of bromine by TEDETA (Wang‐g‐polystyrene–N,N,N′,N′‐tetraethyldiethylenetriamine) at the chain end of the grafted polystyrene chains. This strategy led the ligand away from the core bead, depending on the length of the polystyrene block (number‐average molecular weight determined by size exclusion chromatography = 1100–2250 g/mol). These supported complexes mediated a controlled polymerization of MMA, yielding polymers with controlled molar masses and low polydispersity indices. Moreover, after the polymerization, 96% of the initial copper was kept in the beads. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 5316–5328, 2006  相似文献

The utilization of poly(vinylchloride) (PVC) and poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF) as macroinitiators for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was studied performing electroanalytical investigations and “grafting from” experiments to evaluate the potential modification of such commercial polymers by ATRP. The study was performed changing various operating parameters such as the nature of the copper salt, the ligand, the solvent, the temperature, and the reaction time. Electroanalytical data suggest that PVC can be easily activated by both CuCl/Tris(2‐pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA) and CuCl/Tris[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (Me6TREN), two catalytic systems widely adopted for ATRP reactions, in a wide range of operating conditions. PVDF is more difficult to be activated, due to the higher strength of the C? F bond. In particular, the utilization of high temperature and of a more reductant redox couple such as Cu(I)Me6TREN/Cu(II)Me6TREN was needed to achieve a significant degree of grafting. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of ethyl acrylate (EA) was carried out using different initiators, CuBr or CuCl as catalyst in combination with different ligands e.g., 2,2′‐bipyridine (bpy) and N,N,N′,NN″‐pentamethyl diethylenetriamine (PMDETA). Use of PMDETA as ligand resulted in faster polymerization rate (95% conversion in 15 min) than those using bipyridine (~58% conversion in 10.5 h). This is due to the lower reduction potential of copper‐amine than that of copper‐bpy complex, resulting in higher rates of activation of dormant halides. Use of ethylene carbonate as solvent lead to faster polymerization rate and better control in polymerization when compared with p‐xylene as solvent. The reaction temperature had a positive effect on polymerization rate and the optimum reaction temperature was found to be 90 °C. An apparent enthalpy of activation of ~85 kJ/mol was determined for the ATRP of ethyl acrylate, corresponding to an enthalpy of equilibrium of ~64 kJ/mol. By judicious choice of the reaction parameters it was possible to tailor the end group of the final polymer. MALDI‐TOF‐MS analysis and the chain extension experiment of poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA) prepared using bpy as ligand showed the presence of ? Br as the end group. On the contrary, when PMDETA was used as the ligand, the mass spectra analysis showed hydrogen terminated polymer as the major species towards the end of polymerization. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new “grafting from” strategy for grafting of different monomers (methacrylates, acrylates, and acrylamide) on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) backbone is designed using atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). 4‐Hydroxy TEMPO moieties are anchored on PVDF backbone by ATRC followed by attachment of ATRP initiating sites chosen according to the reactivity of different monomers. High graft conversion is achieved and grafting of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) exhibits high degree of polymerization (DPn = 770) with a very low graft density (0.18 per hundred VDF units) which has been increased to 0.44 by regenerating the active catalyst with the addition of Cu(0). A significant impact on thermal and stress–strain property of graft copolymers on the graft density and graft length is noted. Higher tensile strain and toughness are observed for PVDF‐g‐PMMA produced from model initiator but graft copolymer from pure PVDF exhibits higher tensile strength and Young's modulus. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of the degree of grafting (DOG) on the thermal behavior of poly(vinylbenzyl chloride)‐grafted poly(ethylene‐co‐tetrafluoroethylene) (ETFE‐g‐PVBC) films was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic mechanical analysis ( DMA), FT‐IR, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) instruments. Several ETFE‐g‐PVBC films with various degrees of grafting, including 10, 24, 41, 60, and 94%, were prepared using a radiation grafting technique. The DSC and XRD results of the ETFE‐g‐PVBC films revealed that the crystallinity of the films decreased as the DOG increased. The DMA and FT‐IR results of the films indicated that a crosslinking reaction occurred at temperatures above 250 °C. In the thermal properties of the grafted films, an increase in the DOG led to an increase in the decomposition temperature. The activation energy (Ea) of the thermal decomposition was calculated using Kissinger's equation from TGA results. The Ea value of the PVBC graft chain was found to increase as the DOG increased, indicating that the crosslinking reaction of ETFE‐g‐PVBC films increased with an increase in the DOG during the thermal degradation process. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The direct preparation of proton conducting poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) graft copolymer electrolyte membranes using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is demonstrated. Here, direct initiation of the secondary chlorines of PVC facilitates grafting of a sulfonated monomer. A series of proton conducting graft copolymer electrolyte membranes, i.e. poly(vinyl chloride)‐g‐poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PVC‐g‐PSSA) were prepared by ATRP using direct initiation of the secondary chlorines of PVC. The successful syntheses of graft copolymers were confirmed by 1H‐NMR and FT‐IR spectroscopy. The images of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) presented the well‐defined microphase‐separated structure of the graft copolymer electrolyte membranes. All the properties of ion exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake, and proton conductivity for the membranes continuously increased with increasing PSSA contents. The characterization of the membranes by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) also demonstrated their high thermal stability up to 200°C. The membranes were further crosslinked using UV irradiation after converting chlorine atoms to azide groups, as revealed by FT‐IR spectroscopy. After crosslinking, water uptake significantly decreased from 207% to 84% and the tensile strength increased from 45.2 to 71.5 MPa with a marginal change of proton conductivity from 0.093 to 0.083 S cm?1, which indicates that the crosslinked PVC‐g‐PSSA membranes are promising candidates for proton conducting materials for fuel cell applications. This work uses a simple “grafting through” approach in the preparation of anhydrous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)‐g‐PVTri polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs). Alkaline‐treated PVDF was used as a macromolecule in conjunction with vinyltriazole in the graft copolymerization. The obtained polymer was subsequently doped with triflic acid (TA) at different stoichiometric ratios with respect to triazole units and the anhydrous PEMs (PVDF‐g‐PVTri‐(TA)x) were prepared. All samples were characterized by FTIR and 1H NMR. The composition of PVDF‐g‐PVTri was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy. Thermal properties of the membranes were examined by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The surface roughness and morphology of the membranes were studied using atomic force microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. PVDF‐g‐PVTri‐(TA)3 (C3‐TA3) with a degree of grafting of 47.22% showed a maximum proton conductivity of 0.09 S cm?1 at 150 °C and anhydrous conditions. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerizations (ATRP) of t‐butyl methacrylate (BMA) were carried out, initiated by model initiator benzyl N,N‐diethyldithiocarbamate (BDC) in the presence of CuCl/bipyridine (bpy) under UV irradiation. We performed the first‐order time‐conversion plots in this polymerization system, and the straight line in the semilogarithmic coordinates indicated a first‐order in the monomer. The molecular weight of poly(t‐butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) increased in direct proportion to monomer conversion. The molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) of PBMA was about 1.3. The initiator efficiency, f, was close to 1.0, which indicated that no side reactions occurred. A copper complex, CuCl/bpy, reversibly activated the dormant polymer chains via a N,N‐diethyldithiocarbamate (DC) transfer reaction such as Cu(DC)Cl/bpy, and it was dynamic equilibrium that was responsible for the controlled behavior of the polymerization of BMA. On the basis of this information, we established a preparation method of nanocylinders consisting of graft block copolymers by grafting from photoinduced ATRP of multifunctional polystyrene having DC pendant groups with vinyl monomers [first monomer, BMA; second monomer, styrene or methyl methcrylate (MMA)]. We have carried out the characterization of such nanocylinders in detail. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 63–70, 2005  相似文献

Graft copolymers comprising poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) backbone and poly(styrene sulfonic acid) side chains, i.e. P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐PSSA were synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for composite nanofiltration (NF) membranes. Direct initiation of the secondary chlorinated site of CTFE units facilitates grafting of PSSA, as revealed by FT‐IR spectroscopy. The successful “grafting from” method and the microphase‐separated structure of the graft copolymer were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) also showed the decrease in the crystallinity of P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) upon graft copolymerization. Composite NF membranes were prepared from P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐PSSA as a top layer coated onto P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) ultrafiltration support membrane. Both the rejections and the flux of composite membranes increased with increasing PSSA concentration due to the increase in SO3H groups and membrane hydrophilicity, as supported by contact angle measurement. The rejections of NF membranes containing 47 wt% of PSSA were 83% for Na2SO4 and 28% for NaCl, and the solution flux were 18 and 32 L/m2 hr, respectively, at 0.3 MPa pressure. Block copolymers based on poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, and a series of poly(aromatic sulfonate) sequences were synthesized from controlled radical polymerizations (CRPs). According to the aromatic monomers, appropriate techniques of CRP were chosen: either iodine transfer polymerization (ITP) or atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from PVDF‐I macromolecular chain transfer agents (CTAs) or PVDF‐CCl3 macroinitiator, respectively. These precursors were produced either by ITP of VDF with C6F13I or by radical telomerization of VDF with chloroform, respectively. Poly(vinylidene fluoride)‐b‐poly(sodium styrene sulfonate), PVDF‐b‐PSSS, block copolymers were produced from both techniques via a direct polymerization of sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS) monomer or an indirect way with the use of styrene sulfonate ethyl ester (SSE) as a protected monomer. Although the reaction led to block copolymers, the kinetics of ITP of SSS showed that PVDF‐I macromolecular CTAs were not totally efficient because a limitation of the CTA consumption (56%) was observed. This was probably explained by both the low activity of the CTA (that contained inefficient PVDF‐CF2CH2? I) and a fast propagation rate of the monomer. That behavior was also noted in the ITP of SSE. On the other hand, ATRP of SSS initiated by PVDF‐CCl3 was more controlled up to 50% of conversion leading to PVDF‐b‐PSSS block copolymer with an average number molar mass of 6000 g·mol?1. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports the synthesis of the block and graft copolymers using peroxygen‐containing poly(methyl methacrylate) (poly‐MMA) as a macroinitiator that was prepared from the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of bis(4,4′‐bromomethyl benzoyl peroxide) (BBP). The effects of reaction temperatures on the ATRP system were studied in detail. Kinetic studies were carried out to investigate controlled ATRP for BBP/CuBr/bpy initiating system with MMA at 40 °C and free radical polymerization of styrene (S) at 80 °C. The plots of ln ([Mo]/[Mt]) versus reaction time are linear, corresponding to first‐order kinetics. Poly‐MMA initiators were used in the bulk polymerization of S to obtain poly (MMA‐b‐S) block copolymers. Poly‐MMA initiators containing undecomposed peroygen groups were used for the graft copolymerization of polybutadiene (PBd) and natural rubber (RSS‐3) to obtain crosslinked poly (MMA‐g‐PBd) and poly(MMA‐g‐RSS‐3) graft copolymers. Swelling ratio values (qv) of the graft copolymers in CHCl3 were calculated. The characterizations of the polymers were achieved by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), gel‐permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the fractional precipitation (γ) techniques. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(4‐vinylpyridine) macromonomer (St‐P4VP) with a styryl end group was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 4‐vinylpyridine using p‐(chloromethyl)styrene (CMSt) as functional initiator, CuCl as catalyst and tris[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (Me6TREN) as ligand in 2‐propanol. The structure of St‐P4VP macromonomer was identified by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). The result of gel permeation chromatography (GPC) illustrated that the number‐average molecular weight of St‐P4VP could be controlled by adjusting polymerization conditions. Poly(4‐vinylpyridine) grafted polystyrene microspheres (P4VP‐g‐PSt) were then prepared by dispersion copolymerization of styrene with St‐P4VP macromonomers. The effects of polymerization reaction parameters such as medium polarity, concentration of St‐P4VP macromonomer and polymerization temperature on the sizes and size distribution of P4VP‐g‐PSt microspheres were investigated. The results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser light scattering (LLS) indicated that mono‐dispersed P4VP‐g‐PSt microspheres with average diameters of 100–200 nm could be obtained when the molar ratio of St to St‐P4VP was 0.25:100 in ethanol/water mixed solvents (V/V=80:20) at 60°C. Such kind of graft copolymer microspheres was expected to be applied to many fields such as drug delivery system and protein adsorption/separation system due to their particular structure.  相似文献

Electrochemically mediated atom transfer radical polymerizations (ATRPs) provide well‐defined polymers with designed dispersity as well as under external temporal and spatial control. In this study, 1‐cyano‐1‐methylethyl diethyldithiocarbamate, typically used as chain‐transfer agent (CTA) in reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, was electrochemically activated by the ATRP catalyst CuI/2,2′‐bipyridine (bpy) to control the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. Mechanistic study showed that this polymerization was mainly controlled by the ATRP equilibrium. The effect of applied potential, catalyst counterion, catalyst concentration, and targeted degree of polymerization were investigated. The chain‐end functionality was preserved as demonstrated by chain extension of poly(methyl methacrylate) with n‐butyl methacrylate and styrene. This electrochemical ATRP procedure confirms that RAFT CTAs can be activated by an electrochemical stimulus. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym.
