With the objective of generating “shape-preserving” smooth interpolating curves that represent data with abrupt changes in magnitude and/or knot spacing, we study a class of first-derivative-based -smooth univariate cubic L 1 splines. An L 1 spline minimizes the L 1 norm of the difference between the first-order derivative of the spline and the local divided difference of the data. Calculating the coefficients of an L 1 spline is a nonsmooth non-linear convex program. Via Fenchel’s conjugate transformation, the geometric dual program is a smooth convex program with a linear objective function and convex cubic constraints. The dual-to-primal transformation is accomplished by solving a linear program.  相似文献

Natural cubic interpolatory splines are known to have a minimal L 2-norm of its second derivative on the C 2 (or W 2 2 ) class of interpolants. We consider cubic splines which minimize some other norms (or functionals) on the class of interpolatory cubic splines only. The cases of classical cubic splines with defect one (interpolation of function values) and of Hermite C 1 splines (interpolation of function values and first derivatives) with spline knots different from the points of interpolation are discussed.  相似文献

Estimates are found for the L2 error in approximating the jth derivative of a given smooth function f by the corresponding derivative of the 2mth order smoothing spline based on an n-point sample from the function. The results cover both the case of an exact sample from f and the case when the sample is subject to some random noise. In the noisy case, the estimates are for the expected value of the approximation error. These bounds show that, even in the presence of noise, the derivatives of the smoothing splines of order less than m can be expected to converge to those of f as the number of (uniform) sample points increases, and the smoothing parameter approaches zero at a rate appropriately related to m, n, and the order of differentiability of f.  相似文献

The convergences of three L1 spline methods for scattered data interpolation and fitting using bivariate spline spaces are studied in this paper. That is, L1 interpolatory splines, splines of least absolute deviation, and L1 smoothing splines are shown to converge to the given data function under some conditions and hence, the surfaces from these three methods will resemble the given data values.  相似文献

In this work, numerical solution of nonlinear modified Burgers equation is obtained using an improvised collocation technique with cubic B‐spline as basis functions. In this technique, cubic B‐splines are forced to satisfy the interpolatory condition along with some specific end conditions. Crank–Nicolson scheme is used for temporal domain and improvised cubic B‐spline collocation method is used for spatial domain discretization. Quasilinearization process is followed to tackle the nonlinear term in the equation. Convergence of the technique is established to be of order O(h4 + Δt2) . Stability of the technique is examined using von‐Neumann analysis. L2 and L error norms are calculated and are compared with those available in existing works. Results are found to be better and the technique is computationally efficient, which is shown by calculating CPU time.  相似文献

Classical spline fitting methods for estimating the term structure of interest rates have been criticized for generating highly fluctuating fitting curves for bond price and discount function. In addition, the performance of these methods usually relies heavily on parameter tuning involving human judgement. To overcome these drawbacks, a recently developed cubic L1 spline model is proposed for term structure analysis. Cubic L1 splines preserve the shape of the data, exhibit no extraneous oscillation and have small fitting errors. Cubic L1 splines are tested using a set of real financial data and compared with the widely used B-splines.  相似文献

The best L 1 approximation of the Heaviside function and the best ? 1 approximation of multiscale univariate datasets by a cubic spline have a Gibbs phenomenon near the discontinuity. We show by numerical experiments that the Gibbs phenomenon can be reduced by using L 1 spline fits which are the best L 1 approximations in an appropriate spline space obtained by the union of L 1 interpolation splines. We prove here the existence of L 1 spline fits for function approximation which has never previously been done to the best of our knowledge. A major disadvantage of this technique is an increased computation time. Thus, we propose a sliding window algorithm on seven nodes which is as efficient as the global method both for functions and datasets with abrupt changes of magnitude, but within a linear complexity on the number of spline nodes.  相似文献

Univariate cubic L 1 smoothing splines are capable of providing shape-preserving C 1-smooth approximation of multi-scale data. The minimization principle for univariate cubic L 1 smoothing splines results in a nondifferentiable convex optimization problem that, for theoretical treatment and algorithm design, can be formulated as a generalized geometric program. In this framework, a geometric dual with a linear objective function over a convex feasible domain is derived, and a linear system for dual to primal conversion is established. Numerical examples are given to illustrate this approach. Sensitivity analysis for data with uncertainty is presented. The paper is concerned with applications of quadratic splines with minimal derivative to approximation of functions in approximation and interpolation problems. A smooth spline is constructed on a uniform mesh so as the norm of the spline derivative is minimal; the nodes of the spline and the nodes of interpolations coincide. This approach allows construction of a spline from given values of the function on the mesh without additional assignment of the value of the function derivative at the initial point, because the derivative can be determined from the minimality condition for the norm of the spline derivative in L 2.  相似文献

An active set based algorithm for calculating the coefficients of univariate cubic L 1 splines is developed. It decomposes the original problem in a geometric-programming setting into independent optimization problems of smaller sizes. This algorithm requires only simple algebraic operations to obtain an exact optimal solution in a finite number of iterations. In stability and computational efficiency, the algorithm outperforms a currently widely used discretization-based primal affine algorithm.  相似文献

Dedicated to Professor M. J. D. Powell on the occasion of his sixty-fifth birthday and his retirement. In this paper, we design differentiable, two-dimensional, piecewise polynomial cubic prewavelets of particularly small compact support. They are given in closed form, and provide stable, orthogonal decompositions of L 2 (R 2 ) . In particular, the splines we use in our prewavelet constructions give rise to stable bases of spline spaces that contain all cubic polynomials, whereas the more familiar box spline constructions cannot reproduce all cubic polynomials, unless resorting to a box spline of higher polynomial degree.  相似文献

We obtain central limit theorems for the stochastic parts of Lp-norms of smoothed cubic spline estimators. The proofs are based on the observation that the variance term of the cubic spline is approximately of a form corresponding to a kernel estimator.  相似文献

This paper considers the use of polynomial splines to approximate periodic functions with jump discontinuities of themselves and their derivatives when the information consists only of the first few Fourier coefficients and the location of the discontinuities. Spaces of splines are introduced which include, members with discontinuities at those locations. The main results deal with the orthogonal projection of such a spline space on spaces of trigonometric polynomials corresponding to the known coefficients. An approximation is defined based on inverting this projection. It is shown that when discontinuities are sufficiently far apart, the projection is invertible, its inverse has norm close to 1, and the approximation is nearly as good as directL 2 approximation by members of the spline space. An example is given which illustrates the results and which is extended to indicate how the approximation technique may be used to provide smoothing which which accurately represents discontinuities.  相似文献

The theory of splines is a well studied topic, but the kinship of splines with fractals is novel. We introduce a simple explicit construction for a -cubic Hermite Fractal Interpolation Function (FIF). Under some suitable hypotheses on the original function, we establish a priori estimates (with respect to the L p -norm, 1≤p≤∞) for the interpolation error of the -cubic Hermite FIF and its first derivative. Treating the first derivatives at the knots as free parameters, we derive suitable values for these parameters so that the resulting cubic FIF enjoys global smoothness. Consequently, our method offers an alternative to the standard moment construction of -cubic spline FIFs. Furthermore, we identify appropriate values for the scaling factors in each subinterval and the derivatives at the knots so that the graph of the resulting -cubic FIF lies within a prescribed rectangle. These parameters include, in particular, conditions for the positivity of the cubic FIF. Thus, in the current article, we initiate the study of the shape preserving aspects of fractal interpolation polynomials. We also provide numerical examples to corroborate our results.  相似文献

In this article, we address the problem of approximating data points by C 1-smooth polynomial spline curves or surfaces using L 1-norm. The use of this norm helps to preserve the data shape and it reduces extraneous oscillations. In our approach, we introduce a new functional which enables to control directly the distance between the data points and the resulting spline solution. The computational complexity of the minimization algorithm is nonlinear. A local minimization method using sliding windows allows to compute approximation splines within a linear complexity. This strategy seems to be more robust than a global method when applied on large data sets. When the data are noisy, we iteratively apply this method to globally smooth the solution while preserving the data shape. This method is applied to image denoising.  相似文献

We use a bivariate spline method to solve the time evolution Navier‐Stokes equations numerically. The bivariate splines we use in this article are in the spline space of smoothness r and degree 3r over triangulated quadrangulations. The stream function formulation for the Navier‐Stokes equations is employed. Galerkin's method is applied to discretize the space variables of the nonlinear fourth‐order equation, Crank‐Nicholson's method is applied to discretize the time variable, and Newton's iterative method is then used to solve the resulting nonlinear system. We show the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution in L2(0, T; H2(Ω)) ∩ L(0, T; H1(Ω)) of the 2D nonlinear fourth‐order problem and give an estimate of how fast the numerical solution converges to the weak solution. The C1 cubic splines are implemented in MATLAB for solving the Navier‐Stokes equations numerically. Our numerical experiments show that the method is effective and efficient. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq 19: 776–827, 2003.  相似文献

Computational methods are presented for spline smoothing that make it practical to compute smoothing splines of degrees other than just the standard cubic case. Specifically, an order n algorithm is developed that has conceptual and practical advantages relative to classical methods. From a conceptual standpoint, the algorithm uses only standard programming techniques that do not require specialized knowledge about spline functions, methods for solving sparse equation systems or Kalman filtering. This allows for the practical development of methods for adaptive selection of both the level of smoothing and degree of the estimator. Simulation experiments are presented that show adaptive degree selection can improve estimator efficiency over the use of cubic smoothing splines. Run-time comparisons are also conducted between the proposed algorithm and a classical, band-limited, computing method for the cubic case.  相似文献

In this paper a method for interpolating planar data points by cubic G 2 splines is presented. A spline is composed of polynomial segments that interpolate two data points, tangent directions and curvatures at these points. Necessary and sufficient, purely geometric conditions for the existence of such a polynomial interpolant are derived. The obtained results are extended to the case when the derivative directions and curvatures are not prescribed as data, but are obtained by some local approximation or implied by shape requirements. As a result, the G 2 spline is constructed entirely locally.  相似文献

L & bounds for norms of projections onto bivariate polynomial spline spaces on regular triangulations with stable local bases are established. The general results are then applied to obtain error bounds for best L 2 - and l 2 -approximation by splines on quasi-uniform triangulations. March 8, 2000. Date revised: November 20, 2000.
