The interaction of cesium perfluorooctanoate (CsPFO) with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) of different molecular weight (300 < or = MW < or = 20000 Da) has been investigated at 298.15 K by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), density, viscosity, and conductivity measurements. Calorimetric titrations exhibited peculiar trends analogous to those already observed for sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Micelles of the perfluorosurfactant, as compared to those of SDS, yield complexes with the polymer of similar thermodynamic stability but are able to interact with shorter PEG oligomers. The average number of surfactant molecules bonded per polymer chain at the saturation is about twice that observed for SDS. ITC data at 308.15 K indicate a larger thermodynamic stability of the aggregates but an almost constant stoichiometry. The peculiar thermal effects and the viscosity trend observed during the titration of an aqueous PEG solution with the surfactant appear consistent with a conformational change of the polymer. The PEG chain would evolve from a strained to an expanded conformation, induced by the growing of the surfactant micellar clusters bonded to the polymer, as suggested in a previous study of the PEG/SDS/H2O system.  相似文献

A dynamic surface tension detector (DSTD) was used to examine the molecular diffusion and surface adsorption characteristics of surface-active analytes as a function of solution viscosity. Dynamic surface tension is determined by measuring the differential pressure across the air/liquid interface of repeatedly growing and detaching drops. Continuous surface tension measurement throughout the entire drop growth is achieved for each eluting drop (at a rate of 30 drops/min for 2 μl drops), providing insight into the kinetic behavior of molecular diffusion and orientation processes at the air/liquid interface. Three-dimensional data are obtained through a calibration procedure previously developed, but extended herein for viscous solutions, with surface tension first converted to surface pressure, which is plotted as a function of elution time axis versus drop time axis. Thus, an analyte that lowers the surface tension results in an increase in surface pressure. The calibration procedure derived for the pressure-based DSTD was successfully extended and implemented in this report to experimentally determine standard surface pressures in solutions of varied viscosity. Analysis of analytes in viscous solution was performed at low analyte concentration, where the observed analyte surface activity indicates that the surface concentration is at or near equilibrium when in a water mobile phase (viscosity of 1.0 Cp). Two surface-active analytes, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and polyethylene glycol (MW 1470 g/mol, PEG 1470), were analyzed in solutions ranging from 0 to 60% (v/v) glycerol in water, corresponding to a viscosity range of 1.0-15.0 Cp. Finally, the diffusion-limited surface activity of SDS and PEG 1470 were observed in viscous solution, whereby an increase in viscosity resulted in a decreased surface pressure early in drop growth. The dynamic surface pressure results reported for SDS and PEG 1470 are found to correlate with solution viscosity and analyte diffusion coefficient via the Stokes-Einstein equation.  相似文献

The polar orientation and degree of conformational order of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) adsorbed at the hydrophobic octadecanethiol/aqueous solution interface in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) has been investigated as a function of the surfactant concentration and the molecular weight of the polymer. Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy was employed to obtain spectra of interfacial surfactant; weak SFG signals from interfacial polymer were also detected for polymer molecular weights of 900 and above. The phase of the SFG spectra indicated that both the surfactant and polymer had a net orientation of their CH2 and/or CH3 groups toward the hydrophobic surface. Spectra of SDS in the presence of mixed polymer/surfactant solutions showed increasing conformational order as the surfactant concentration was raised. At the lowest surfactant concentrations, the spectra of SDS were weaker in the presence of the polymer than in its absence. All PEG molecular weights investigated, with the exception of PEG 400, gave rise to significant inhibition of ordered surfactant adsorption below the critical micelle concentration. The greatest inhibitory effect was noted for PEG 900. Probing interfacial PEG specifically through the use of perdeuterated SDS revealed that the polymer spectral intensity decreased monotonically as the surfactant concentration was increased for all polymer molecular weights where a PEG spectrum was apparent. These findings are interpreted in terms of the displacement of preadsorbed polymer as the surfactant concentration increases. This result is compatible with observations of adsorption from SDS/PEG solutions at solid/solution and solution/air interfaces made using other techniques.  相似文献

The adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) from aqueous solution onto a calcium fluoride substrate (CaF(2)), in the presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different molecular weights, has been investigated using the interface specific nonlinear optical technique of sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. Spectra of adsorbed SDS (in the C-H stretching region) were recorded at the surface of a CaF(2) prism in contact with SDS solutions at concentrations up to the cmc (8 mM) of the pure surfactant and in contact with binary solutions containing SDS and PEG with molecular weights from 400 to 12 000. In contrast with SFG spectra from the same combinations of surfactant and polymer on a hydrophobic surface, there was no evidence of spectra arising from the actual polymer adsorbed on CaF(2) at any polymer molecular weight either in the absence or presence of surfactant. However, there was indirect evidence for the presence of adsorbed polymer from changes in the SDS SFG spectra in the presence of polymer compared with spectra when the polymer was absent. The SFG spectra of SDS at 0.8 mM were closely similar to each other at all polymer molecular weights and different from the spectra in the absence of the polymer. The spectral differences between the polymer present and polymer absent was much smaller when the solution concentration of surfactant was 8 mM.  相似文献

Aqueous solutions of a charged hydrophobically modified hydroxyethylcellulose (HM-HEC(−)) exhibit high viscosities even at low polymer concentrations (0.2 wt%), which is an interesting feature in connection with enhanced oil recovery. This polymer was synthesized for this work. Effects of temperature and addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) or hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) on the viscosity properties of a semidilute solution of HM-HEC(−) are examined. The results for the HM-HEC(−)/SDS system disclose strong interactions between HM-HEC(−) and SDS at low level of SDS addition, and this leads to a significant viscosification of the polymer-surfactant mixture. At higher surfactant concentrations the association complexes are disrupted. A strong temperature effect of the viscosity is observed at moderate levels of SDS addition, with lower values of the viscosity at elevated temperatures because of enhanced polymer chain mobility that breaks up the associations. Addition of HP-β-CD monomers to the HM-HEC(−) solution generates decoupling of associations via inclusion complex formation with the polymer hydrophobic tails and the viscosity decreases. By using temperature and addition of these co-solutes, it is demonstrated that the viscosity of the polymer solution can be tuned over a large range of viscosity values.  相似文献

The solubility of n-pentane gas in aqueous solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), SDS-0.1 wt% polyethylene oxide (PEG), SDS-0.1 wt% PEG+NaCl (0.1 mol/l), and SDS-0.1 wt% PEG+NaOH (0.1 mol/l) has been determined at 318.15 K. The concentration of SDS (m(SDS)) is up to 50 mmol/kg. The solubility increases linearly with the concentration of SDS above its critical micelle concentration (CMC) or critical aggregation concentration (CAC), indicating that micelles in the solutions solubilize the gas molecules and the solubility of n-pentane gas in the micelles is independent of the SDS concentration. It was found that the solubilization ability of micelles bound to PEG and free micelles to n-pentane gas is almost the same. The solubility of n-pentane gas in micelle phase is three magnitudes higher than that in the bulk solution. The solubilization property of SDS is changed by the addition of PEG, although the solubilizing effect of the polymer alone is not considerable. NaCl and NaOH affect the solubilization noticeably and increase the interaction strength between SDS and PEG. The standard Gibbs energies for the transfer of n-pentane gas from bulk phase to micelle phase are large negative values, indicating that the hydrocarbon gas prefers to exist in the hydrophobic interior of the micelles.  相似文献

On the interface of a solid surface and a solution of nonadsorbing polymer there exists a depletion layer (DL), where the concentration of polymer segments is lower. Donath's electrophoretic theory, based on the decreased viscosity in the DL region, allows computing DL thickness from the relative (with and without polymer) electrophoretic mobility, the bulk viscosity, and the ionic strength. The aim of this work is to check experimentally Donath's nonlinear electrophoretic (NLE) theory under the most favorable conditions--liposomes in solutions of low-molecular poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). In order to determine DL thickness, the dependence of mobility on viscosity is chosen instead on ionic strength. The value obtained from NLE theory is compared with the DL thickness calculated by Vincent's pragmatic theory. The conformation-statistical parameters are calculated on the base of viscosimetric measurements of PEG solution. The results indicate a few shortcomings of NLE theory. The main one is that DL thickness does not depend on polymer concentration, a fact that is in discrepancy with the prediction of Vincent's theory. The conclusion is that NLE theory describes well the experimental dependence of the relative mobility on the bulk viscosity, but it is inapplicable to quantitative determination of DL thickness.

Interactions of surfactants with hydrophobically modified polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions are important in several applications such as detergents, cosmetics, foods, and paints. Fundamental questions arise on the mechanisms of complexation of the polyelectrolyte and surfactant that control their behavior. In this work, the complexation was studied by examining interactions in aqueous solutions of a hydrophobically modified polymer, poly(maleic acid/octyl vinyl ether) (PMAOVE), with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) by monitoring viscosity, pyrene solubility, light scattering, and analytical ultracentrifugation. When the anionic surfactant SDS was added to aqueous solutions of the similarly charged polymer PMAOVE, the surfactant was incorporated into the hydrophobic nanodomains of PMAOVE even far below the cmc of the surfactant. On the basis of viscosity, pyrene solubility, and analytical ultracentrifugation data, it is proposed that PMAOVE undergoes structural unfolding and at higher SDS concentrations mixed micelles are formed.  相似文献

The interaction of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in aqueous solution with poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (M(w) = 55,000 g/mol) in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) (M(w) = 8000 g/mol) is investigated by electrical conductivity, zeta potential measurements, viscosity measurements, fluorescence spectroscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The results indicate that SDS-polymer interaction occurs at low surfactant concentration, and its critical aggregation concentration is fairly dependent on polymer composition. The polymer-supported micelles have average aggregation numbers dependent on surfactant concentration, are highly dissociated when compared with aqueous SDS micelles, and have zeta potentials that increase linearly with the fraction of PVP at constant SDS concentration. The analysis of the SAXS measurements indicated that the PVP/PEG/SDS system forms surface-charged aggregates of a cylindrical shape with an anisometry (length to cross-section dimension ratio) of about 3.0.  相似文献

The behavior of mixed cationic/anionic and cationic/nonionic surfactants solutions have been studied by viscosimetry. The systems studied were sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and CTAB/Brij (polyoxyethylene lauryl ether, n = 10 and 23) in aqueous and sodium chloride solutions. The relative viscosity of single nonionic surfactant solutions is larger than that of SDS or CTAB solutions. It increases with the number of ethylene oxide groups. In the mixed systems, viscosity deviates from ideal behavior. The deviation results from electrostatic interactions. The surfactant mixture composition affects the self-assembled microstructure and rheology. A new mixed system that forms clear micellar solution above CMC was detected. In CTAB/Brij systems, the experimental data also deviate from ideal behavior due to mixed micelle formation and electroviscous effect. This effect is less pronounced than that of SDS/CTAB system and could be suppressed by adding an electrolyte (NaCl).  相似文献

The shape, size, aggregation, hydration, and correlation times of water insoluble PEO‐PPO‐PEO triblock copolymer micelles with sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) micelles were investigated using transport studies and dynamic light scattering technique. From the conductance of micellar solutions of the polymer in 25 mM SDS and 5 mM NaCl, the hydration of polymer micelles were determined using the principle of obstruction of electrolyte migration by the polymer. The asymmetry of the micellar particles of polymer and polymer‐SDS mixed micellar systems in 5 mM NaCl and their average axial ratios were calculated using intrinsic viscosity and hydration data obeying Simha–Einstein equation. Hydration number and micellar sizes were variable with temperature. The shape of the polymer micelles has been ellipsoidal rather than spherical. The micellar volume, hydrodynamic radius, radius of gyration, diffusional coefficients as well as translational, rotational and effective correlation times have been calculated from the absolute values of the axes. The partial molal volume of polymer micelles has also been determined and its comparison with the molar volume of pure polymer suggested a volume contraction due to immobilization of the water phase by the hydrophilic head groups of the polymer. The thermodynamic activation parameters for viscous flow favor a more ordered water structure around polymer micelles at higher temperatures.

Two fractions of ethyl(hydroxy)ethyl cellulose, EHEC, and their interactions with sodium dodecyl sulphate, SDS, have been investigated. The effect of salt on these interactions was explored. The more hydrophobic fraction exhibits a cloud point (CP) of 30°C, and the more hydrophilic fraction has a CP around 65°C. The properties of the systems were studied by means of hydrodynamic (viscosity), equilibrium dialysis and cloud point measurements. Dye solubilization was used to obtain indications of cluster formation on the polymer backbone. The equilibrium dialysis shows a steep binding beginning at a critical surfactant concentration indicating a cooperative effect in the EHEC/SDS/water system. It is found that when the degree of binding is moderate and only 10–20% of the value at saturation, the specific viscosity effects occur and solutions containing high polymer concentrations pass a marked maximum in viscosity. It is shown that the maximum in viscosity and the collcoil interaction, expressed as Huggins constant,k H, appear a composition with the same fractional amount of SDS adsorbed to both EHEC fractions. It was found that the onset of redistribution and increase in viscosity were shifted to higher SDS concentrations, although still below the normal CMC, for the EHEC fraction with a high CP. When small amounts of salt are present in the EHEC/SDS/water solutions, the CP curves develop a pronounced minimum at low SDS concentrations. The redistribution of SDS to the polymers starts immediately in the presence of salt, but the viscosity of the solutions is affected only in a very narrow composition interval.  相似文献

Novel cationic hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) polymers with different molecular weights (1.1 x 10(5) to 1.7 x 10(6) g/mol) and ethylene oxide (EO) side chain lengths (1.5-2.9 EO units) were mixed with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in aqueous solutions. The phase diagrams of cationic HEC-SDS complexes were determined in the dilute polymer concentration regime (< 0.5 wt %) with gradual addition of SDS molecules. The viscosity and structures of the complexes during the phase evolution were studied using rheometry and dynamic light scattering. The gradual addition of SDS first induced interchain associations with the bound SDS aggregates serving as cross-linkers to form an open network structure, producing a very broad size distribution and high viscosities of the complex solutions, and then condensed the network and induced a structure reorganization, resulting in globular aggregates with narrow size distributions. The growth of these globular aggregates in size eventually led to macroscopic sedimentation near charge neutralization. Further addition of SDS randomly broke the sedimentary aggregates into small particles and SDS micelles with low solution viscosities. The effects of molecular weight and EO side chain length of polymers on the phase boundary, viscosity, and structure of cationic HEC-SDS complexes were discussed.  相似文献

The intermacromolecular complexation of polymers with chemically complementary structures in aqueous media is a new approach to modifying polymer solutions, especially to enhance solution viscosity. In this study, complexed solutions formed through the hydrogen‐bonding complexation of several nonionic water‐soluble polymer pairs—poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) with polyacrylamide (PAM), PAM with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), PAA with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and PEO with PVA—were prepared, and the viscosity enhancement of the complexed solutions were studied with vision spectrophotometry and viscometry. The effects of the polymer concentration, polymer molecular weight, and pH value of the polymer solution on the intermacromolecular interactions were investigated through a comparison of the viscosity enhancement factor R of different complexed solutions. The results show that the viscosity of the PAA/PAM complexed solution is much higher than that of its constituents, whereas that of the PAM/PEO and the PAA/PVA complexed solutions are between the viscosities of their constituents but are higher than the theory values calculated from the blending rule of two polymer solutions. These results indicate that in the complexed solutions there exist interactions between the macromolecules with chemically complementary structures, although the interactions are quite different for the different complexed systems. It is the interactions that lead to an association of the polymers and, hence, an obvious enhancement in the solution viscosity and the resistance of the polymer solutions to shearing. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Ultrasonic absorption and velocity measurements were made on aqueous solutions of poly (ethylene glycol)(PEG)of different molecular weights and concentrations, using a pulse sender-receiver ultrasonic generator, Measurements were obtained at a frequency of 2MHz. , and a temperature of 293 K. The results show a linear increase of the Values of velocity, density and viscosity with increase of molecu lar weight and concentration of PEG. On the contrary, the attenuation values decreased with increase of molecular weight and concentration of PEG. A mathematical equation correlating relaxation amplitude and molecular weight of the polymer is suggested. This was applied to calculate the molecular weights of unknown samples of PEG from their measured relaxation amplitude. The results obtained were in good agreement with those obtained from osmometry.  相似文献

The dependences of the kinematic viscosity of dilute aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) with various molecular weights in the temperature range of 293.15–323.15 K were investigated. The intrinsic viscosity, the Huggins constant, and the activation energy of a viscous flow were calculated for these solutions. Proposals regarding the structure of polymer macromolecules in solution are made. The constants of the Mark-Kuhn-Hauvink equation required to estimate the polymer molecular weights were determined for PEG-water systems at various temperatures.  相似文献

The relationship among the presence of nonsolvent additives, the rheological behavior of spinning solutions and properties of hollow fiber membranes was studied. The additives tested were water, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), and the base mixture was polyethersulfone/N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (PES–NMP). In addition the effect of combining water and PVP or PEG was also studied. Membranes were prepared using a spinneret having two concentric orifices. The internal coagulant used as well as the nonsolvent from the coagulation bath were both water at 28°C and 30°C, respectively. Rheological properties of polymer solutions were evaluated using a rheometer Haake RV 20. Changes on composition of spin-solutions were also evaluated in terms of membrane water permeability, solute rejection and membrane structure observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Experimental results from this work showed that spinning solutions containing any of the three additives behave as Newtonian fluids in the range of shearing rates tested. The addition of water, PVP or PEG to the base PES–NMP solution increased its viscosity and this effect was independent of the type of additive used. A direct relation between viscosity of casting solutions and membrane thickness was found. However, rheological properties (viscosity and normal stress difference) could not be used to explain differences on membrane water flux (MWF) when using different additives at the same concentration. The addition of any of the three additives generally increased MWF. The extent of this increment seemed to be more related to changes on membrane porosity than changes on pore sizes induced by the nature and concentration of the additive used.  相似文献
