New variants of greedy algorithms, called advanced greedy algorithms, are identified for knapsack and covering problems with linear and quadratic objective functions. Beginning with single-constraint problems, we provide extensions for multiple knapsack and covering problems, in which objects must be allocated to different knapsacks and covers, and also for multi-constraint (multi-dimensional) knapsack and covering problems, in which the constraints are exploited by means of surrogate constraint strategies. In addition, we provide a new graduated-probe strategy for improving the selection of variables to be assigned values. Going beyond the greedy and advanced greedy frameworks, we describe ways to utilize these algorithms with multi-start and strategic oscillation metaheuristics. Finally, we identify how surrogate constraints can be utilized to produce inequalities that dominate those previously proposed and tested utilizing linear programming methods for solving multi-constraint knapsack problems, which are responsible for the current best methods for these problems. While we focus on 0–1 problems, our approaches can readily be adapted to handle variables with general upper bounds.  相似文献

We identify a polynomially solvable special case of the bounded knapsack problem that is characterized by a set of simple inequalities relating item weight ratios to item profit ratios.  A cardinality constrained knapsack problem is a continuous knapsack problem in which no more than a specified number of nonnegative variables are allowed to be positive. This structure occurs, for example, in areas such as finance, location, and scheduling. Traditionally, cardinality constraints are modeled by introducing auxiliary 0-1 variables and additional constraints that relate the continuous and the 0-1 variables. We use an alternative approach, in which we keep in the model only the continuous variables, and we enforce the cardinality constraint through a specialized branching scheme and the use of strong inequalities valid for the convex hull of the feasible set in the space of the continuous variables. To derive the valid inequalities, we extend the concepts of cover and cover inequality, commonly used in 0-1 programming, to this class of problems, and we show how cover inequalities can be lifted to derive facet-defining inequalities. We present three families of non-trivial facet-defining inequalities that are lifted cover inequalities. Finally, we report computational results that demonstrate the effectiveness of lifted cover inequalities and the superiority of the approach of not introducing auxiliary 0-1 variables over the traditional MIP approach for this class of problems. Extending our work on second-order cover cuts [F. Glover, H.D. Sherali, Second-order cover cuts, Mathematical Programming (ISSN: 0025-5610 1436-4646) (2007), doi:10.1007/s10107-007-0098-4. (Online)], we introduce a new class of higher-order cover cuts that are derived from the implications of a knapsack constraint in concert with supplementary two-sided inequalities that bound the sums of sets of variables. The new cuts can be appreciably stronger than the second-order cuts, which in turn dominate the classical knapsack cover inequalities. The process of generating these cuts makes it possible to sequentially utilize the second-order cuts by embedding them in systems that define the inequalities from which the higher-order cover cuts are derived. We characterize properties of these cuts, design specialized procedures to generate them, and establish associated dominance relationships. These results are used to devise an algorithm that generates all non-dominated higher-order cover cuts, and, in particular, to formulate and solve suitable separation problems for deriving a higher-order cut that deletes a given fractional solution to an underlying continuous relaxation. We also discuss a lifting procedure for further tightening any generated cut, and establish its polynomial-time operation for unit-coefficient cuts. A numerical example is presented that illustrates these procedures and the relative strength of the generated non-redundant, non-dominated higher-order cuts, all of which turn out to be facet-defining for this example. Some preliminary computational results are also presented to demonstrate the efficacy of these cuts in comparison with lifted minimal cover inequalities for the underlying knapsack polytope.  相似文献

Summary In this paper, we describe computationally efficient procedures for identifying all maximal cliques and non-dominated selected subsets of extensions of minimal covers and alternates that are implied by single 0–1 knapsack constraints. The induced inequalities are satisfied by and 0–1 feasible solution to the knapsack constraint, but are tipically violated by fractional solutions. In addition, the procedures described here are used in conjunction with other constraints to further tighten LP relaxations of 0–1 programs. The complexity of the procedures isO(n). This paper presents the use of surrogate constraints and Lagrange multipliers to generate advanced starting solutions to constrained network problems. The surrogate constraint approach is used to generate a singly constrained network problem which is solved using the algorithm of Glover, Karney, Klingman and Russell [13]. In addition, we test the use of the Lagrangian function to generate advanced starting solutions. In the Lagrangian approach, the subproblems are capacitated network problems which can be solved using very efficient algorithms.The surrogate constraint approach is implemented using the multiplier update procedure of Held, Wolfe and Crowder [16]. The procedure is modified to include a search in a single direction to prevent periodic regression of the solution. We also introduce a reoptimization procedure which allows the solution from thekth subproblem to be used as the starting point for the next surrogate problem for which it is infeasible once the new surrogate constraint is adjoined.The algorithms are tested under a variety of conditions including: large-scale problems, number and structure of the non-network constraints, and the density of the non-network constraint coefficients.The testing clearly demonstrates that both the surrogate constraint and Langrange multipliers generate advanced starting solutions which greatly improve the computational effort required to generate an optimal solution to the constrained network problem. The testing demonstrates that the extra effort required to solve the singly constrained network subproblems of the surrogate constraints approach yields an improved advanced starting point as compared to the Lagrangian approach. It is further demonstrated that both of the relaxation approaches are much more computationally efficient than solving the problem from the beginning with a linear programming algorithm.  相似文献

In this short note we obtain the full set of inequalities that define the convex hull of a 0–1 knapsack constraint presented in Weismantel (1997). For that purpose we use our O(n) procedures for identifying maximal cliques and non-dominated extensions of consecutive minimal covers and alternates, as well as our schemes for coefficient increase based tightening cover induced inequalities and coefficient reduction based tightening general 0–1 knapsack constraints.  相似文献

Three classes of valid inequalities based upon multiple knapsack constraints are derived for the generalized assignment problem. General properties of the facet defining inequalities are discussed and, for a special case, the convex hull is completely characterized.  A dynamic knapsack set is a natural generalization of the 0-1 knapsack set with a continuous variable studied recently. For dynamic knapsack sets a large family of facet-defining inequalities, called dynamic knapsack inequalities, are derived by fixing variables to one and then lifting. Surprisingly such inequalities have the simultaneous lifting property, and for small instances provide a significant proportion of all the facet-defining inequalities. We then consider single-item capacitated lot-sizing problems, and propose the joint study of three related sets. The first models the discrete lot-sizing problem, the second the continuous lot-sizing problem with Wagner-Whitin costs, and the third the continuous lot-sizing problem with arbitrary costs. The first set that arises is precisely a dynamic knapsack set, the second an intersection of dynamic knapsack sets, and the unrestricted problem can be viewed as both a relaxation and a restriction of the second. It follows that the dynamic knapsack inequalities and their generalizations provide strong valid inequalities for all three sets. Some limited computation results are reported as an initial test of the effectiveness of these inequalities on capacitated lot-sizing problems. In this paper, we solve instances of the multiobjective multiconstraint (or multidimensional) knapsack problem (MOMCKP) from the literature, with three objective functions and three constraints. We use exact as well as approximate algorithms. The exact algorithm is a properly modified version of the multicriteria branch and bound (MCBB) algorithm, which is further customized by suitable heuristics. Three branching heuristics and a more general purpose composite branching and construction heuristic are devised. Comparison is made to the published results from another exact algorithm, the adaptive ε-constraint method [Laumanns, M., Thiele, L., Zitzler, E., 2006. An efficient, adaptive parameter variation scheme for Metaheuristics based on the epsilon-constraint method. European Journal of Operational Research 169, 932–942], using the same data sets. Furthermore, the same problems are solved using standard multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEA), namely, the SPEA2 and the NSGAII. The results from the exact case show that the branching heuristics greatly improve the performance of the MCBB algorithm, which becomes faster than the adaptive ε -constraint. Regarding the performance of the MOEA algorithms in the specific problems, SPEA2 outperforms NSGAII in the degree of approximation of the Pareto front, as measured by the coverage metric (especially for the largest instance).  相似文献

We address a multi-item capacitated lot-sizing problem with setup times and shortage costs that arises in real-world production planning problems. Demand cannot be backlogged, but can be totally or partially lost. The problem is NP-hard. A mixed integer mathematical formulation is presented. Our approach in this paper is to propose some classes of valid inequalities based on a generalization of Miller et al. [A.J. Miller, G.L. Nemhauser, M.W.P. Savelsbergh, On the polyhedral structure of a multi-item production planning model with setup times, Mathematical Programming 94 (2003) 375–405] and Marchand and Wolsey [H. Marchand, L.A. Wolsey, The 0–1 knapsack problem with a single continuous variable, Mathematical Programming 85 (1999) 15–33] results. We also describe fast combinatorial separation algorithms for these new inequalities. We use them in a branch-and-cut framework to solve the problem. Some experimental results showing the effectiveness of the approach are reported.  相似文献

The multiconstraint 0–1 knapsack problem is encountered when one has to decide how to use a knapsack with multiple resource constraints. Even though the single constraint version of this problem has received a lot of attention, the multiconstraint knapsack problem has been seldom addressed. This paper deals with developing an effective solution procedure for the multiconstraint knapsack problem. Various relaxation of the problem are suggested and theoretical relations between these relaxations are pointed out. Detailed computational experiments are carried out to compare bounds produced by these relaxations. New algorithms for obtaining surrogate bounds are developed and tested. Rules for reducing problem size are suggested and shown to be effective through computational tests. Different separation, branching and bounding rules are compared using an experimental branch and bound code. An efficient branch and bound procedure is developed, tested and compared with two previously developed optimal algorithms. Solution times with the new procedure are found to be considerably lower. This procedure can also be used as a heuristic for large problems by early termination of the search tree. This scheme was tested and found to be very effective.  相似文献

This paper addresses integer programming problems under probabilistic constraints involving discrete distributions. Such problems can be reformulated as large scale integer problems with knapsack constraints. For their solution we propose a specialized Branch and Bound approach where the feasible solutions of the knapsack constraint are used as partitioning rules of the feasible domain. The numerical experience carried out on a set covering problem with random covering matrix shows the validity of the solution approach and the efficiency of the implemented algorithm.  相似文献

The multidimensional 0-1 knapsack problem (MKP) is a resource allocation model that is one of the most well-known integer programming problems. During the last few decades, an impressive amount of research on the 0-1 knapsack problem has been published in the literature, and efficient special-purpose methods have become available for solving very large-scale instances. However, the multidimensional case has received less attention from the operational research community. Although recent advances have made solving medium size instances possible, solving the NP-hard problem remains a very interesting challenge, especially when the number of constraints increases. This paper surveys the principal results published in the literature concerning both the problem's theoretical properties and its approximate or exact solutions. The paper focuses on the more recent results—for example, those relevant to surrogate and composite duality, new preprocessing approaches creating enhanced versions of leading commercial software, and efficient metaheuristic-based methods.  相似文献

We introduce a new class of second-order cover inequalities whose members are generally stronger than the classical knapsack cover inequalities that are commonly used to enhance the performance of branch-and-cut methods for 0–1 integer programming problems. These inequalities result by focusing attention on a single knapsack constraint in addition to an inequality that bounds the sum of all variables, or in general, that bounds a linear form containing only the coefficients 0, 1, and –1. We provide an algorithm that generates all non-dominated second-order cover inequalities, making use of theorems on dominance relationships to bypass the examination of many dominated alternatives. Furthermore, we derive conditions under which these non-dominated second-order cover inequalities would be facets of the convex hull of feasible solutions to the parent constraints, and demonstrate how they can be lifted otherwise. Numerical examples of applying the algorithm disclose its ability to generate valid inequalities that are sometimes significantly stronger than those derived from traditional knapsack covers. Our results can also be extended to incorporate multiple choice inequalities that limit sums over disjoint subsets of variables to be at most one.   相似文献

The mixing set with a knapsack constraint arises in deterministic equivalent of chance-constrained programming problems with finite discrete distributions. We first consider the case that the chance-constrained program has equal probabilities for each scenario. We study the resulting mixing set with a cardinality constraint and propose facet-defining inequalities that subsume known explicit inequalities for this set. We extend these inequalities to obtain valid inequalities for the mixing set with a knapsack constraint. In addition, we propose a compact extended reformulation (with polynomial number of variables and constraints) that characterizes a linear programming equivalent of a single chance constraint with equal scenario probabilities. We introduce a blending procedure to find valid inequalities for intersection of multiple mixing sets. We propose a polynomial-size extended formulation for the intersection of multiple mixing sets with a knapsack constraint that is stronger than the original mixing formulation. We also give a compact extended linear program for the intersection of multiple mixing sets and a cardinality constraint for a special case. We illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed inequalities in our computational experiments with probabilistic lot-sizing problems.  相似文献

Here we describe computationally efficient procedures for tightening cover induced inequalities by using 0–1 knapsack constraints and, if available, cliques whose variables are included in the cover. An interesting application is the case where the cover is implied by the knapsack constraint. The tightening is achieved by increasing the coefficients of the cover inequality. The new constraint is 0–1 equivalent to and LP tighter than the original one. The computational complexity of the procedures is O(n log n), where n is the number of variables in the cover.  相似文献

We study the set of 0–1 integer solutions to a single knapsack constraint and a set of non-overlapping cardinality constraints (MCKP), which generalizes the classical 0–1 knapsack polytope and the 0–1 knapsack polytope with generalized upper bounds. We derive strong valid inequalities for the convex hull of its feasible solutions using sequence-independent lifting. For problems with a single cardinality constraint, we derive two-dimensional superadditive lifting functions and prove that they are maximal and non-dominated under some mild conditions. We then show that these functions can be used to build strong valid inequalities for problems with multiple disjoint cardinality constraints. Finally, we present preliminary computational results aimed at evaluating the strength of the cuts obtained from sequence-independent lifting with respect to those obtained from sequential lifting.  相似文献

We formulate the fixed-charge multiple knapsack problem (FCMKP) as an extension of the multiple knapsack problem (MKP). The Lagrangian relaxation problem is easily solved, and together with a greedy heuristic we obtain a pair of upper and lower bounds quickly. We make use of these bounds in the pegging test to reduce the problem size. We also present a branch-and-bound (B&B) algorithm to solve FCMKP to optimality. This algorithm exploits the Lagrangian upper bound as well as the pegging result for pruning, and at each terminal subproblem solve MKP exactly by invoking MULKNAP code developed by Pisinger [Pisinger, D., 1999. An exact algorithm for large multiple knapsack problems. European Journal of Operational Research 114, 528–541]. As a result, we are able to solve almost all test problems with up to 32,000 items and 50 knapsacks within a few seconds on an ordinary computing environment, although the algorithm remains some weakness for small instances with relatively many knapsacks.  相似文献
