This study investigates worker training related issues in dual resource constrained (DRC)job shop environments with the simultaneous presence of learning, forgetting (which causes relearning) and worker attrition effects. Learning and forgetting occurs as workers are trained in different departments on the shop floor. A recent survey of job shops based in the US indicates that firms are concerned about the relearning losses that accompany worker transfers, and are using a variety of strategies to reduce the effects of relearning. This study uses the learn-forget-learn (LFL) model to capture different learning and forgetting environments in order to understand whether up-front training can be used to reduce relearning and realize the benefits of worker flexibility. Results show that the existing forgetting rate has a significant impact on inventory and customer service performance. Extensive up-front training helps reduce relearning, however, it does not always help improve performance.  相似文献

Educational research communities bear responsibility for establishing a substantial body of evidence to support claims that drive the field. For example, one commonly accepted claim is that there is a relationship between the cognitive demand of mathematical task enactments and students’ learning. One study that is often cited in association with this claim is Stein and Lane (1996), and in 44% of those citations, Stein and Lane (1996) is the sole reference. Citation analysis reveals that many of these claims go beyond the warrants provided by the Stein and Lane study, either by granting more confidence in the relationship than the study design allows or by phrasing the claim as a causal relationship between cognitive demand and student learning. A few other studies are occasionally cited in conjunction with Stein and Lane (1996) and are summarized in this article, but there remains a need for replication studies to provide better empirical support for claims about cognitive demand and student learning and to refine our shared understanding.  相似文献

This paper reports the outcomes of an empirical study undertaken to investigate the relationship of prospective teachers’ cognitive styles and levels of performance in measurement and spatial tasks. A total of 116 prospective kindergarten school teachers were tested using the VICS and the extended CSA-WA tests (Peterson 2005) in order to place them along the Verbal/Imagery and the Wholistic/Analytic cognitive style continua. The same prospective teachers were also administered a mathematical test with 6 measurement and 6 spatial tasks. The results suggest that there were no significant differences between Verbalisers-Imagers and Wholistic-Analytic prospective teachers in their performance on the spatial pictorial and textual tasks, and on the measurement textual tasks. However, there were differences between Verbalisers-Imagers and Wholistic-Analytic prospective teachers in their performance on the measurement pictorial tasks. This difference was attributed to the performance of low achievers. High achievers performed in the same way independently of their cognitive styles.  相似文献

Real world manufacturing systems are usually constrained by both machine and human resources. Human operators are often the constraining resource and transfer between workstations to process jobs when required. This kind of system is known as a Dual Resource Constrained (DRC) system and presents additional technical challenges which must be considered during planning and scheduling. These technical challenges can be categorised into the five main dimensions of job release mechanisms, job dispatching, worker flexibility, worker assignment and transfer costs. This paper aims to provide an overview of recent developments in DRC research concerned with each of these areas and also discusses some possible approaches to solving the resource scheduling problem in a DRC system. The focus is on materials published after 1995 and up to 2009. Previous reviews on DRC systems are commented on and followed by a review of recent works associated with each of the five dimensions of DRC system research. Advancements made and new methodologies proposed are discussed and future research directions are identified.  相似文献

The available learning and forgetting models do not consider the physical loading that performing a task requires. In some situations, physical loading results in workers’ fatigue on the job that is followed by rest breaks to alleviate it. The aim of this paper is to present the “learning–forgetting–fatigue–recovery model” (LFFRM) that addresses possible issues relating to workers’ capabilities and restrictions in manufacturing environments. Numerical examples are solved to address some research questions regarding the model optimization and its constraints. The main results show that incorporating learning into a production process decreases fatigue and improves the performance of the system. Worker fatigue, on the other hand, increases production time and decreases production output. A recovery break must be of enough length to alleviate some of the accumulated fatigue. However, longer recovery times extend the lead time and deteriorate the production performance due to forgetting.  相似文献

This paper studies the effects of learning and forgetting on a two-stage production system and the position of a potential bottleneck in the system. We start with developing a model for a two-stage serial production system where semi-finished items are fed by the first stage to the second stage, which, in turn, processes the items to their final state. The finished items are transferred either to a subsequent stage or to customers. The paper assumes that both stages of the production system considered are subject to learning and forgetting effects. Learning quickens the production rate as more experience is gained (i.e., when the number of repetitions increases), while forgetting has the opposite effect when production is intermittent (i.e., experience is lost over production breaks). The paper studies how different values of the learning and forgetting parameters influence the ratio of the production rates of both stages and the flow of material in the system. The results of the paper indicate that learning may cause a bottleneck to shift its position in a production system. This happens when an initially slower stage overtakes a previously faster stage over time due to a higher learning rate. The paper thus contributes to the literature on moving bottlenecks and provides practitioners with a model that helps predicting where bottlenecks may arise in the production system, and which enables the system to flexibly react to moving bottlenecks.  相似文献

This paper proposes to investigate learning and forgetting effects on the problem of scheduling families of jobs on a single machine to minimize total completion time of jobs. A setup time is incurred whenever the single machine transfers job processing from a family to another family. To analyze the impact of learning and forgetting on this group scheduling problem, we structure three basic models and make some comparisons through computational experiments. The three models, including no forgetting, total forgetting and partial forgetting, assume that the processing time of a job is dependent on its position in a schedule. Some scheduling rules and a lower bound are derived in order to constitute our branch-and-bound algorithm for searching an optimal sequence. In addition, an efficient and simply-structured heuristic is also built to find a near-optimal schedule.  相似文献

The prevalence of prediction in grade-level expectations in mathematics curriculum standards signifies the importance of the role prediction plays in the teaching and learning of mathematics. In this article, we discuss benefits of using prediction in mathematics classrooms: (1) students’ prediction can reveal their conceptions, (2) prediction plays an important role in reasoning and (3) prediction fosters mathematical learning. To support research on prediction in the context of mathematics education, we present three perspectives on prediction: (1) prediction as a mental act highlights the cognitive aspect and the conceptual basis of one's prediction, (2) prediction as a mathematical activity highlights the spectrum of prediction tasks that are common in mathematics curricula and (3) prediction as a socio-epistemological practice highlights the construction of mathematical knowledge in classrooms. Each perspective supports the claim that prediction when used effectively can foster mathematical learning. Considerations for supporting the use of prediction in mathematics classrooms are offered.  相似文献

This paper presents an approach for selecting workers for tasks of varying complexity based on individual learning and forgetting characteristics in order to improve system productivity. The performance of a learning and forgetting-based selection (LFBS) policy is examined using simulation and compared to a baseline policy representing criteria used in practice. The effects of factors including worker redundancy and task-tenure on productivity are also examined in the environment of continuously staffed independent tasks. Results demonstrate that the LFBs policy significantly improves productivity relative to common practice and suggests that lower levels of redundancy and shorter task-tenures tend to mitigate some of the negative effects of forgetting.  相似文献

This article presents a study on the long-term (i.e., steady-state, convergence) characteristics of workers’ skill levels under learning and forgetting in processing units in a manufacturing environment, in which products are produced in batches. Assuming that all workers already have the basic knowledge to execute the jobs, workers learn (accumulate their skill) while producing units within a batch, forget during interruptions in production, and relearn when production resumes. The convergence properties in the paper are examined under assumptions of an infinite time horizon, a constant demand rate, and a fixed lot size. Our work extends the steady-state results of Teyarachakul, Chand, and Ward (2008) to the learning and forgetting functions that belong to a large class of functions possessing some differentiability conditions. We also discuss circumstances of manufacturing environments where our results would provide useful managerial information and other potential applications.  相似文献

Multi-sectoral systems, such as cities or regional economies, face strategic challenges of optimal development due to the complexity of interacting perspectives, interests, and preferences of decision-makers and stakeholders. In coping with these challenges, integrated approaches in strategic planning and decision support promise to generate more efficient and effective results than sectoral approaches. In this article, we follow the concept of operational research (OR) by applying a formalized approach to cross-sectoral integrated planning and decision-making in complex, i.e., multi-sectoral systems. The presented Transdisciplinary Integrated Planning and Synthesis (TIPS) approach relies on (soft) OR methods combined in a multi-methodological framework that is adapted to the cognitive skills and habits of the stakeholders and experts involved in mutual and joint learning processes (transdisciplinarity). This methodological contribution structures, formalizes, and empirically illustrates cross-sectoral integrated strategic planning step by step, and evaluates the TIPS methodology against requirements for integrated approaches derived from literature.  相似文献

The performance of various organizational structures is an essential parameter in the reengineering of organizations, particularly in the current rapidly changing, competitive and information technology-dependent environment. This situation has generally resulted in a smaller workforce confronted with voluminous information-processing requirements. Naturally, the focus has been on the design of organzations that will support effective and efficient learning processes. This specific study is on the contingency modely by Ouksel et al. (1997) on the impact of organizational structure on organizational learning and performance. It expands the empirical evaluation of the model to test its robustness. This is done by conducting extensive simulations with (a) a larger number of variables in the decision tasks, and (b) a larger set of numbers for each of the numeric variables, than has been used in the past. Overall, the validity of previous results achieved has been confirmed, but the selection of the most appropriate design, that which will indeed improve learning, is even more nuanced than past studies have concluded.  相似文献

Scheduling with learning effects has been widely studied in the past decade. With the increasingly moving toward shorter product cycle times in many production lines, workers in this changeable environment must constantly learn new skill and technology. As a result, the forgetting effect might occur in these situations. In this paper, we propose a model with the consideration of both the learning and forgetting effects. The paper discusses recursive computation problems of the criterion functions of several least squares type parameter estimation methods for linear regression models, including the well-known recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm, the weighted RLS algorithm, the forgetting factor RLS algorithm and the finite-data-window RLS algorithm without or with a forgetting factor. The recursive computation formulas of the criterion functions are derived by using the recursive parameter estimation equations. The proposed recursive computation formulas can be extended to the estimation algorithms of the pseudo-linear regression models for equation error systems and output error systems. The parameter estimation problem is considered for a class Wiener systems. First, the effect of the forgetting factor on the stochastic gradient algorithm is analyzed. Then, a Wiener system stochastic gradient with a changing forgetting factor algorithm is presented which makes full use of the forgetting factor. In this note, we provide a Cournot oligopoly model of learning-by-doing that incorporates both learning spillovers and organizational forgetting, relaxing the commonly made assumption of linear learning by considering a hyperbolic learning curve that depends on both own and rivals’ experience. The analysis is conducted under the assumption of myopic firms. We show that conditions exist under which more competition, captured by an increase in the number of firms, worsens both productive and allocative efficiency at the steady-state equilibrium.  相似文献

In this paper, the use of guided hyperlearning, unguided hyperlearning, and conventional learning methods in mathematics are compared. The design of the research involved a quasi-experiment with a modified single-factor multiple treatment design comparing the three learning methods, guided hyperlearning, unguided hyperlearning, and conventional learning. The participants were from three first-year university classes, numbering 115 students in total. Each group received guided, unguided, or conventional learning methods in one of the three different topics, namely number systems, functions, and graphing. The students’ academic performance differed according to the type of learning. Evaluation of the three methods revealed that only guided hyperlearning and conventional learning were appropriate methods for the psychomotor aspects of drawing in the graphing topic. There was no significant difference between the methods when learning the cognitive aspects involved in the number systems topic and the functions topic.  相似文献

A model of a second order neural network incorporating a weight adjusting learning component and time delays in processing and transmission is formulated. Delay-independent sufficient conditions are derived for the existence of an asymptotically and exponentially stable equilibrium state. The learning dynamics is modelled with an unsupervised Hebbian-type learning algorithm together with a forgetting term. If there is nothing for the network to learn or if there are no second order synaptic interactions, then our analysis will correspond to one of the standard model of neural networks.  相似文献
