Natural convection heat transfer in an inclined fin attached square enclosure is studied both experimentally and numerically. Bottom wall of enclosure has higher temperature than that of top wall while vertical walls are adiabatic. Inclined fin has also adiabatic boundary conditions. Numerical solutions have been done by writing a computer code in Fortran platform and results are compared with Fluent commercial code and experimental method. Governing parameters are Rayleigh numbers (8.105 ≤ Ra ≤ 4 × 106) and inclination angle (30° ≤ and ≤ 120°). The temperature measurements are done by using thermocouples distributed uniformly at the wall of the enclosure. Remarkably good agreement is obtained between the predicted results and experimental data. A correlation is also developed including all effective parameters on heat transfer and fluid flow. It was observed that heat transfer can be controlled by attaching an inclined fin onto wall.  相似文献

This paper describes a numerical method for the study of combined natural convection and radiation in a rectangular, two-dimensional cavity containing a non-participating (i.e. transparent) fluid. One wall of the cavity is isothermal, being heated either by solar radiation or independently. The opposite wall is partially transparent, permitting radiation exchanges between the cavity and its surroundings and/or the Sun; that wall also exchanges heat by convection from its external surface to the surroundings. The other two walls are adiabatic: convection and radiation there are balanced, so that there is no heat transfer through those walls. The equations of motion and energy are solved by finite difference methods. Coupled to these equations are the radiative flux boundary conditions which are used to determine the temperature distribution along the non-isothermal walls. A two-band radiation model has been employed. Results are presented for a square cavity with a vertical hot wall at 150 °C, the ambient at 20 °C and 104 ? Ra ? 3 × 105, in the absence of direct insolation. The effects on the flow and heat transfer in the cavity of radiation and external convection have been examined. More extensive results will be presented in subsequent papers.  相似文献

Natural convection in a partially filled porous square cavity is numerically investigated using SIMPLEC method. The Brinkman-Forchheimer extended model was used to govern the flow in the porous medium region. At the porous-fluid interface, the flow boundary condition imposed is a shear stress jump, which includes both the viscous and inertial effects, together with a continuity of normal stress. The thermal boundary condition is continuity of temperature and heat flux. The results are presented with flow configurations and isotherms, local and average Nusselt number along the cold wall for different Darcy numbers from 10−1 to 10−6, porosity values from 0.2 to 0.8, Rayleigh numbers from 103 to 107, and the ratio of porous layer thickness to cavity height from 0 to 0.50. The flow pattern inside the cavity is affected with these parameters and hence the local and global heat transfer. A modified Darcy–Rayleigh number is proposed for the heat convection intensity in porous/fluid filled domains. When its value is less than unit, global heat transfer keeps unchanged. The interfacial stress jump coefficients β 1 and β 2 were varied from  −1 to +1, and their effects on the local and average Nusselt numbers, velocity and temperature profiles in the mid-width of the cavity are investigated.  相似文献

Natural convection, radiation and conduction heat transfer in passive solar massive wall systems with fins attached to the heated surface and with glazing is experimentally studied. The system was 0.78 m high, 0.40 m wide and 0.10 m thick concrete wall with a glazing placed at 0.0265 m from the surface. It had 0.025 m long, 0.004 m thick horizontal fins made as an integral part of the massive wall and placed at 0.01 m intervals. A heat source was used to impose a constant heat flux which could be varied from about 200–800 W/m2. Temperatures at various points and heat flux by convection at the back were measured. Using various assumptions, the systems was also analyzed theoretically. The results show that about 40% of the heat flux imposed on the finned surface goes through the system and is dissipated at the back. Received on 7 September 2000  相似文献

Transient convection of an incompressible viscous fluid in a square cavity is investigated. The temperature at the top lid is higher than that at the bottom wall, producing a stably stratified overall configuration. The vertical sidewalls are insulated. Flow is initiated by an impulsive start of the sliding motion of the top lid. The transient features of the mixed convection are delineated by procuring numerical solutions in a wide range of parameters, i.e., 400≤Re≤4,000, 1.6×105Gr≤1.6×107. Flows and heat transfer characteristics are described both in the interior core and boundary-layer regions. In the large-time limit, the steady state features are depicted. Parallel experimental efforts are made by employing the particle image velocimetry (PIV) to visualize the steady state flow and thermal fields, together with thermocouple measurements.  相似文献

The problem of heat convection from a vertically oscillating cylinder in a quiescent fluid is investigated. The governing equations of motion and energy are solved numerically in a non-inertial frame of references to determine the flow field and heat transfer characteristics under different conditions. The main dominating parameters are Keulegan–Carpenter number, KC, frequency parameter, β, Grashof number, Gr and Prandtl number, Pr. The ranges considered for these parameters are KC ≤ 10, β≤40 and Gr ≤ 105 while Prandtl number is kept constant. The study revealed that the effect of amplitude and frequency of oscillation on heat transfer is strongly influenced by the Grashof number range. In the forced convection regime (Gr = 0), the increase of KC creates extensive vortex motion at all cylinder positions that leads to a significant increase in heat transfer. A similar trend, but with a lesser extent, is also observed for the increase of β. However, at high Grashof numbers, the effect of oscillation on heat convection is only significant at large values of KC. Received on 5 June 2000 / Published online: 29 November 2001  相似文献

The mixed convection in a vertical plane-parallel channel with two heat sources of finite dimensions located at the wall is analyzed on the basis of a two-dimensional numerical simulation. The effect of the distance between the heat sources on the flow pattern and the temperature field is studied. Calculations are performed on the Grashof and Reynolds number ranges from 0–105 and 0–10, respectively, at a Prandtl number of 0.7. The mathematical model is based on the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations in the Boussinesq approximation. The problem is solved by the finite element method.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a comprehensive numerical study to analyze conjugate, turbulent mixed convection heat transfer from a vertical channel with four heat sources, uniformly flush-mounted to one of the channel walls. The results are presented to study the effect of various parameters like thermal conductivity of wall material (k s), thermal conductivity of flush-mounted discrete heat source (k c), Reynolds number of fluid flow (Re s), modified Richardson number (Ri +) and aspect ratio (AR) of the channel. The standard k-ε turbulence model, modified by including buoyancy effects with physical boundary conditions, i.e. without wall functions, has been used for the analysis. Semi-staggered, non-uniform grids are used to discretise the two dimensional governing equations, using finite volume method. A correlation, encompassing a wide range of parameters, is developed for the non-dimensional maximum temperature (T *) using the asymptotic computational fluid dynamics (ACFD) technique.  相似文献

Natural convection in a fluid saturated porous medium has been numerically investigated using a generalized non-Darcy approach. The governing equations are solved by using Finite Volume approach. First order upwind scheme is employed for convective formulation and SIMPLE algorithm for pressure velocity coupling. Numerical results are presented to study the influence of parameters such as Rayleigh number (106 ≤Ra ≤108), Darcy number (10−5Da ≤ 10−2), porosity (0.4 ≤ ɛ ≤ 0.9) and Prandtl number (0.01 ≤ Pr ≤ 10) on the flow behavior and heat transfer. By combining the method of matched asymptotic expansions with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), so called asymptotic computational fluid dynamics (ACFD) technique has been employed to generate correlation for average Nusselt number. The technique is found to be an attractive option for generating correlation and also in the analysis of natural convection in porous medium over a fairly wide range of parameters with fewer simulations for numerical solutions.  相似文献

Laminar natural convection has been studied in enclosures bounded by a solid wall with its outer boundary at constant temperature while the opposing side has a constant heat flux. Two-dimensional equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy, with the Boussinesq approximation are solved using a finite difference method. The numerical procedure adopted is based on the SIMPLER algorithm. Various parameters were: Rayleigh number (from 103 to 106), dimensionless conductivity of bounding wall (from 1 to 10) and dimensionless wall width (from 0.15 to 0.5), aspect ratio (from 0.5 to 1) and the inclination angle (from 30° to 180°). The results are reduced in terms of the normalized Nusselt number as a function of the Rayleigh number, and other dimensionless parameters. The isotherms and streamlines are produced for various Rayleigh numbers and geometrical conditions. It is found that the heat transfer is an increasing function of the Rayleigh number, wall to fluid conductivity ratio, enclosure aspect ratio and a decreasing function of the wall thickness. It passes from a maximum for the inclination angle of about 80°.  相似文献

Strong heat source at the isolation condenser wall of an Advanced Heavy Water Reactor, results in natural convection in gravity driven water pool, which leads to a thermally stratified pool. Governing equations simulating fluid flow and heat distribution are solved numerically by a general purpose Computational Fluid Dynamics solver developed at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. Incompressible finite volume method with non-staggered grid arrangement is used in this exercise. This algorithm is fully implicit and semi-coupled. Turbulent natural convection in a boundary layer for high Rayleigh numbers is analyzed by the Lam–Bremhorst k − ε turbulence model. Analysis of unsteady laminar natural convection in a side-heated water cavity is also done for different values of Rayleigh number. Results show a warm fluid layer floating on the top of gradually colder layer (along the vertical direction) that indicates the presence of thermal stratification phenomenon. This fact necessitates additional safety features in such a system so that the detrimental effect such as stratification is minimized.  相似文献

Prominent results of a simulation study on conjugate convection with surface radiation from an open cavity with a traversable flush mounted discrete heat source in the left wall are presented in this paper. The open cavity is considered to be of fixed height but with varying spacing between the legs. The position of the heat source is varied along the left leg of the cavity. The governing equations for temperature distribution along the cavity are obtained by making energy balance between heat generated, conducted, convected and radiated. Radiation terms are tackled using radiosity-irradiation formulation, while the view factors, therein, are evaluated using the crossed-string method of Hottel. The resulting non-linear partial differential equations are converted into algebraic form using finite difference formulation and are subsequently solved by Gauss–Seidel iterative technique. An optimum grid system comprising 111 grids along the legs of the cavity, with 30 grids in the heat source and 31 grids across the cavity has been used. The effects of various parameters, such as surface emissivity, convection heat transfer coefficient, aspect ratio and thermal conductivity on the important results, including local temperature distribution along the cavity, peak temperature in the left and right legs of the cavity and relative contributions of convection and radiation to heat dissipation in the cavity, are studied in great detail.  相似文献

Natural convection flow in a differentially heated square enclosure filled with porous matrix with a solid adiabatic thin fin attached at the hot left wall is studied numerically. The Brinkman–Forchheimer-extended Darcy model is used to solve the momentum equations, in the porous medium. The numerical investigation is done through streamlines, isotherms, and heat transfer rates. A parametric study is carried out using the following parameters: Darcy number (Da) from 10−4 to 10−2, dimensionless thin fin lengths (L p) 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7, dimensionless positions (S p) 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 with Prandtl numbers (Pr) 0.7 and 100 for Ra = 106. For Da = 10−3 and Pr = 0.7, it is observed that there is a counter clock-wise secondary flow formation around the tip of the fin for S p = 0.5 for all lengths of L p. Moreover when Da = 10−2 the secondary circulation behavior has been observed for S p = 0.25 and 0.75 and there is another circulation between the top wall and the fin that is separated from the primary circulation. However, these secondary circulations features are not observed for Pr = 100. It is also found that the average Nusselt number decreases as the length of the fin increases for all locations. However, the rate of decrease of average Nusselt number becomes slower as the location of fin moves from the bottom wall to the top wall. The overall heat transfer rate can be controlled with a suitable selection of the fin location and length.  相似文献

Nonsimilarity solutions for non-Darcy mixed convection from a vertical impermeable surface embedded in a saturated porous medium are presented for variable surface heat flux (VHF) of the power-law form. The entire mixed convection region is divided into two regimes. One region covers the forced convection dominated regime and the other one covers the natural convection dominated regime. The governing equations are first transformed into a dimensionless form by the nonsimilar transformation and then solved by a finite-difference scheme. Computations are based on Keller Box method and a tolerance of iteration of 10−5 as a criterion for convergence. Three physical aspects are introduced. One measures the strength of mixed convection where the dimensionless parameter Ra* x /Pe3/2 x characterizes the effect of buoyancy forces on the forced convection; while the parameter Pe x /Ra*2/3 x characterizes the effect of forced flow on the natural convection. The second aspect represents the effect of the inertial resistance where the parameter KU /ν is found to characterize the effect of inertial force in the forced convection dominated regime, while the parameter (KU /ν)(Ra*2/3 x /Pe x ) characterizes the effect of inertial force in the natural convection dominated regime. The third aspect is the effect of the heating condition at the wall on the mixed convection, which is presented by m, the power index of the power-law form heating condition. Numerical results for both heating conditions are carried out. Distributions of dimensionless temperature and velocity profiles for both Darcy and non-Darcy models are presented. Non-Darcy mixed convection in a porous medium from horizontal surfaces with variable surface heat flux of the power-law distribution is analyzed. The entire mixed convection regime is divided into two regions. The first region covers the forced convection dominated regime where the dimensionless parameter ζ f =Ra* x /Pe2 x is found to characterize the effect of buoyancy forces on the forced convection with K U /ν characterizing the effect of inertia resistance. The second region covers the natural convection dominated regime where the dimensionless parameter ζ n =Pe x /Ra*1/2 x is found to characterize the effect of the forced flow on the natural convection, with (K U /ν)Ra*1/2 x /Pe x characterizing the effect of inertia resistance. To obtain the solution that covers the entire mixed convection regime the solution of the first regime is carried out for ζ f =0, the pure forced convection limit, to ζ f =1 and the solution of the second is carried out for ζ n =0, the pure natural convection limit, to ζ n =1. The two solutions meet and match at ζ f n =1, and R * h =G * h . Also a non-Darcy model was used to analyze mixed convection in a porous medium from horizontal surfaces with variable wall temperature of the power-law form. The entire mixed convection regime is divided into two regions. The first region covers the forced convection dominated regime where the dimensionless parameter ξ f =Ra x /Pe x 3/2 is found to measure the buoyancy effects on mixed convection with Da x Pe x /ɛ as the wall effects. The second region covers the natural convection dominated region where ξ n =Pe x /Ra x 2/3 is found to measure the force effects on mixed convection with Da x Ra x 2/3/ɛ as the wall effects. Numerical results for different inertia, wall, variable surface heat flux and variable wall temperature exponents are presented. Received on 8 July 1996  相似文献

Three-dimensional turbulent forced convective heat transfer and flow characteristics, and the non-dimensional entropy generation number in a helical coiled tube subjected to uniform wall temperature are simulated using the k–ε standard turbulence model. A finite volume method is employed to solve the governing equations. The effects of Reynolds number, curvature ratio, and coil pitch on the average friction factor and Nusselt number are discussed. The results presented in this paper cover a Reynolds number range of 2 × 104 to 6 × 104, a pitch range of 0.1–0.2 and a curvature ratio range of 0.1–0.3. The results show that the coil pitch, curvature ratio and Reynolds number have different effects on the average friction factor and Nusselt number at different cross-sections. In addition, the flow and heat transfer characteristics in a helical coiled tube with a larger curvature ratio for turbulent flow are different from that of smaller curvature ratio for laminar and turbulent flow in certain ways. Some new features that are not obtained in previous researches are revealed. Moreover, the effects of Reynolds number, curvature ratio, and coil pitch on the non-dimensional entropy generation number of turbulent forced convection in a helical coiled tube are also discussed.  相似文献

An analytical study is made of the convective flow field produced when a warm cylinder maintained at a fixed temperature above freezing is buried in saturated frozen porous medium. The flow field is shown to have a double cell pattern due to the density inversion of water at ~ 4°C, with downward convection of heat dominating at cylinder temperatures of below ~ 10°C and upward heat convection dominating at temperatures greater than this. The analysis uses a perturbation technique to determine the first-order convective correction to the flow and temperature fields around the cylinder for a quasi-static case. It demonstrates that the porous medium permeability and the cylinder temperature are the dominant factors in determining the point at which convection heat transfer becomes significant, with convection expected to be insignificant for Darcy permeabilies lower than 10−5 m/s. The analysis also gives an indication of the rates of thawing occurring in different directions without resorting to numerical methods. The practical implications of a thawing pattern significantly different to that predicted by conduction theory only are discussed briefly with respect to the problem of differential thaw settlement of arctic pipelines.  相似文献

A three-dimensional numerical investigation of steady laminar natural convection in vented enclosures is carried out. A discrete flush-type heat source mounted on the substrate is used to simulate an electronic component. Four different vent locations are investigated. Combined natural convection in the air and conduction in the heat source, the substrate, and the enclosure walls are solved. Solutions are obtained for Rayleigh numbers ranging from 104 to 106, different substrate thermal conductivity ratios, and varied vent sizes. The calculation domain is extended beyond the cubic enclosure in x-, y-, and z-directions. Appropriate boundary conditions are prescribed on the extended computational domain. The resulting flow and temperature patterns are discussed. Also, the local and overall heat transfer from the heat source and the substrate, in terms of Nusselt numbers and the surface temperatures, are presented to illustrate the vent effects.  相似文献

Characteristic modes of the time development of nonstationary heat convection in a closed planar domain upon a sudden supply of heat from the lateral surface are considered for Rayleigh numbers 103–107. Estimates of the boundaries of the beginning of the influence of convection on the temperature field and the buildup of a quasistationary convection mode in the range of Rayleigh and Fourier numbers are given. Characteristics of the circulation flow, the singularities of the temperature-field configuration and of the heat transfer from the wall to the fluid, are investigated. The mechanism for the origination and disappearance of vertical temperature differences, caused by convection, and the dependence of the vertical temperature differences on the Rayleigh and Fourier numbers, on the thermal mode of the boundary, and the domain geometry, are considered.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 109–117, July–August, 1970.The author is grateful to T. The main objective of this article is to study the effect of discrete heating on free convection heat transfer in a rectangular porous enclosure containing a heat-generating substance. The left wall of the enclosure has two discrete heat sources and the right wall is isothermally cooled at a lower temperature. The top and bottom walls, and the unheated portions of the left wall are adiabatic. The vorticity–stream function formulation of the governing equations is numerically solved using an implicit finite difference method. The effects of aspect ratio, Darcy number, heat source length, and modified Rayleigh number on the flow and heat transfer are analyzed. The numerical results reveal that the rate of heat transfer increases as the modified Rayleigh number and the Darcy number increases, but decreases on increasing the aspect ratio. The average heat transfer rate is found to be higher at the bottom heater than at the top heater in almost all considered parameter cases except for ε = 0.5. Also, the maximum temperature takes place generally at the top heater except for the case ε = 0.5, where the maximum temperature is found at the bottom heater. Further, the numerical results reveal that the maximum temperature decreases with the modified Rayleigh number and increases with the aspect ratio.  相似文献
