Interaction of collagen and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) in blends
The interaction between collagen and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) in blends has been studied by viscometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was found that the amide A and amide I bands position in FTIR spectra of collagen were shifted after blending with PVP to higher wavenumbers. DSC measurements showed different melting temperature, glass transition temperature and enthalpy for the blends and for the single components. Viscosity measurements showed interaction between collagen and PVP also in a dilute water solution. The results have shown, that the interactions between collagen and PVP exist due to the strong interactions between the synthetic and biological component, mainly by hydrogen bonds. These interactions caused that collagen and PVP are miscible at molecular level. The blending of collagen with PVP may give the possibility of producing new materials for potential biomedical applications.

New nanofibers containing poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-iodine complex (PVP-iodine) were obtained by electrospinning in order to prepare materials suitable for wound dressings. Different approaches were used: a one-step method based on electrospinning of PVP-iodine or poly(ethylene oxide)/PVP-iodine solutions and a three-step method based on electrospinning of PVP or poly(ethylene oxide)/PVP mixed solutions followed by photo-mediated crosslinking of the obtained nanofibers and subsequent complexation with iodine. The average diameters of the fibers were in the range 150-470 nm depending on the composition and on the applied field strength (AFS) and increased with increasing the amount of PEO in the spinning solutions. Higher AFS resulted in greater fiber diameter and in size distribution broadening. Photo-mediated crosslinking in the presence of 4,4′-diazidostilbene-2,2′-disulfonic acid disodium salt successfully stabilized the electrospun PVP and PEO/PVP nanofibers against water and water vapor.

Thermal stability of poly(vinyl chloride)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PVC/PEO) blends has been investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in dynamic and isothermal heating regime. PVC/PEO blends were prepared by hot-melt extrusion (HME). According to TG analysis, PEO decomposes in one stage, while PVC and PVC/PEO blends in two degradation stages. In order to evaluate the effect of PEO content on the thermal stability of PVC/PEO blends, different criteria were used. It was found that thermal stability of PVC/PEO blends depends on the blend composition. The interactions of blends components with their degradation products were confirmed. By using multiple heating rate kinetics the activation energies of the PVC/PEO blends thermal degradation were calculated by isoconversional integral Flynn–Wall–Ozawa and differential Friedman method. According to dependence of activation energy on degree of conversion the complexity of degradation processes was determined.

The use of hydrogels as biomaterials has increased lately. Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) is an example of polymer hydrogels applied for the synthesis of hydrogel to be used in different biomedical applications. This paper describes a study on rheological properties of PVP hydrogels obtained by gamma radiation techniques. PVP hydrogels were obtained by gamma radiation of PVP water solutions with different radiation doses. It was studied the influence of additives such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and glycerol on the rheological behaviour of the gel. The rheological behaviour of hydrogel samples was characterized by measuring the shear storage modulus (G′) under dynamic shear loading. Besides this, sterility and cytotoxicity tests were performed. The study on rheological behaviour of hydrogels showed that G′ of PVP gels change according to the additive used. Glycerol increases the fluidity of the gel. The influence of PEG depends on the amount and on its molecular mass. The increase on PEG amount and molecular mass cause a decrease of G′ and an increase in the crosslinking density of PVP hydrogel network. The use of high molecular weight PEO allows the increase of the elasticity of the PVP gels.

Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-capped bismuth nanospheres were synthesized by a simple and convenient wet chemical method. In the process, bismuth nitrate was reduced by ethylene glycol in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) at 185 °C in air. PVP was used as a protecting agent to prevent oxidation of the sperical bismuth particles. PVP molecules were absorbed on the surface of bismuth nanospheres through the interaction of O–Bi bond which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) measurement. The thermal analysis shows the samples contained about 73 wt.% metallic bismuth. The optical absorption spectrum of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-capped bismuth nanosphere shows a strong absorption band at 275 nm.

A methodology was developed to determine the intrinsic viscosity of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and multivariate calibration (MVC) methods. Multivariate partial least squares calibration was applied to the spectra using mean centering and cross validation. The results were correlated to the intrinsic viscosities determined by the standard chemical method (ASTM D 4603-01) and a very good correlation for values in the range from 0.346 to 0.780 dL g−1 (relative viscosity values ca. 1.185-1.449) was observed. The spectrophotometer detector sensitivity and the humidity of the samples did not influence the results. The methodology developed is interesting because it does not produce hazardous wastes, avoids the use of time-consuming chemical methods and can rapidly predict the intrinsic viscosity of PET samples over a large range of values, which includes those of recycled materials.

The photochemical stability of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) in the presence of 1%, 3% and 5% of collagen has been studied by UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetry analysis (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG). Surface properties have been studied by contact angle measurements. PVP samples and samples containing 1%, 3% and 5% of collagen were irradiated with UV light of wavelength λ = 254 nm in air for up to 24 h. The amount of gel created during UV irradiation was estimated.PVP in the presence of 1%, 3% and 5% of collagen is less stable both thermally and photochemically. Collagen enhances photochemical processes leading to crosslinking of PVP. The contact angle measurements and values of surface free energy showed that the wettability of PVP films was changed by the addition of collagen and by UV irradiation. The increase of polarity of samples indicates an efficient photooxidation on the surface upon UV irradiation.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) (polymer A) and poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) (polymer B) are known to form a thermodynamically miscible pair. In the present study the conclusion on miscibility of PVA/PVP solid blends, confirmed qualitatively (DMTA, FTIR) and quantitatively (DSC, χAB = − 0.69 at 503 K) is compared with the miscibility investigations of PVA/PVP solution blends by the technique of dilute solution viscometry. The miscibility of the ternary (polymer A/ polymer B/ solvent) system is estimated on the basis of experimental and ideal values of the viscosity parameters k, b and [η]. It is found that the conclusions on miscibility or nonmiscibility drawn from viscosity measurements in dilute solution blends depend: (i) on the applied extrapolation method used for the determination of the viscosity interaction parameters, (ii) on the assumed definition of the ideal values and (iii) on the thermodynamic quality of the solvent, which in the case of PVA depends on its degree of hydrolysis. Hence, viscometric investigations of dilute PVA/PVP solution blends have revealed that viscometry, widely used in the literature for estimation of polymer-polymer miscibility can not be recommended as a sole method to presume the miscibility of a polymer pair.

We have measured the self‐diffusion coefficients of a series of oligo‐ and poly(ethylene glycol)s with molecular weights ranging from 150 to 10,000, in aqueous solutions and gels of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), using the pulsed‐gradient spin‐echo NMR techniques. The PVA concentrations varied from 0 to 0.38 g/mL which ranged from dilute solutions to polymer gels. Effects of the diffusant size and polymer concentration on the self‐diffusion coefficients have been investigated. The temperature dependence of the self‐diffusion coefficients has also been studied for poly(ethylene glycol)s with molecular weights of 600 and 2,000. Several theoretical models based on different physical concepts are used to fit the experimental data. The suitability of these models in the interpretation of the self‐diffusion data is discussed. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 37: 2396–2403, 1999  相似文献

Dense membranes were prepared from poly(vinyl alcohol)–poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVA–PVP) blends of different compositions and studied in swelling and dehydration by pervaporation of three organic solvents contaminated by 5 wt% water. The swelling generally increases with the PVP content. No extraction occurs in water–tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water–methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) mixtures. In ethanol containing 10 wt% of water, there is no extraction for blends containing less than 40 wt% PVP and an increasing extraction beyond this PVP content. The pervaporation flux of the water–ethanol mixture increases drastically at the same threshold whereas the water permselectivity falls to a low level. The values of the diffusion and permeability coefficients determined from transient permeation of the test water–ethanol mixture exhibit a similar sudden increase at the same PVP content threshold. This singular behavior of the blend membranes is interpreted by a strong affinity of the PVP component to ethanol, combined with a disappearance of crystallites in the blend at this threshold. Consequently the amorphous membrane can swell freely according to the affinity of the PVP component, leading to the observed behavior.

The photodegradation behaviour of the collagen and poly(ethylene glycol) PEG blends has been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Vis spectroscopy and viscometry. Surface properties before and after UV irradiation were observed using optical microscope.Collagen and PEG were immiscible and the films obtained from the mixture were fragile with poor mechanical properties. The photochemical stability of the collagen and PEG blend was different from that of the single components. In general collagen/PEG blends are less stable under UV irradiation than pure collagen. The influence of PEG on the photochemical stability of collagen depends on its concentration in the blend. Microscope photographs showed that the surface characteristics of collagen and collagen/PEG blends in film form are not drastically altered after UV irradiation.

Two synthetic ways were experimented to prepare new architectures of block copolymers made of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(methylthiirane). The coupling of both blocks conveniently end-capped as well as anionic polymerization of methylthiirane initiated by PEG-thiols gave readily the copolymers. Their characterization by 1H NMR, SEC and IR confirmed the expected structures.

The effect of sodium fluoride, sodium bromide, tetramethyl ammonium chloride, tetramethyl ammonium bromide and sodium formate on both precipitation and θ-temperatures of poly(ethylene glycol) (Mw = 4000) in aqueous solution have been determined. Curves have been drawn to represent the effect of such ions on both the θ and the precipitation temperatures of the polymer. The effectiveness increases in the order (CH3)4 NBr, NaBr, (CH3)4NCl, NaF and HCOONa. The Mw-temperatures obtained at infinite dilution are 445 K for NaBr, NaF, (CH3)4 NBr and (CH3)4NCl and 415 K for HCOONa.

Coumarin-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) monols and diols were isothermally crystallized at temperatures between 20 and 35 °C before and after exposure to approximately 110 J cm−2 of ultra-violet A (λ > 300 nm, UVA) irradiation. Irradiation dimerized the coumarin groups and chain-extended the coumarin-functionalized PEG oligomers. The higher molecular weights reduced the crystal growth rate by as much as 50% compared to the non-irradiated coumarin-functionalized PEG oligomers under ambient crystallization conditions. Hoffman’s kinetic nucleation theory was utilized to evaluate the types of nucleation that occurred for the coumarin-functionalized PEG diols (COU-PEG-COU). Crystallization regimes II and III were observed for the coumarin-modified PEG oligomers before and after exposure to UVA light.

The photooxidative degradation of blends (in a full range of compositions) of amorphous poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with semicrystalline poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in the form of thin films is investigated using absorption spectroscopy (UV–visible and Fourier transform infrared) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The amount of insoluble gel formed as a result of photocrosslinking is estimated gravimetrically. It is found that the PVC/PEO blendsí susceptibility to photooxidative degradation differs from that pure of the components and depends on the blend composition and morphology. Photoreactions such as degradation and oxidation are accelerated whereas dehydrochlorination is retarded in blends. The photocrosslinking efficiency in PVC/PEO blends is higher than in PVC; moreover, PEO is also involved in this process. AFM images showing the lamellar structure of semicrystalline PEO in the blend lead to the conclusion that the presence of PVC does not disturb the crystallization process of PEO. The changes induced by UV irradiation allow the observation of more of the distinct PEO crystallites. This is probably caused by recrystallization of short, more mobile chains in degraded PEO or by partial removal of the less stable amorphous phase from the film surface. These results confirm previous information on the miscibility of PVC with PEO. The mechanism of the interactions between the components and the blend photodegradation are discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 585–602, 2004  相似文献

Biodegradable multiblock copolymers were synthesized by a polycondensation of poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) diols of molecular weight (MW)=3,000 and poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEG) of MW=3,000 with 4,4′-(adipoyldioxy)dicinnamic acid (CAC) dichloride as a chain extender in diphenyl ether at 180 °C for 2 h, and were characterized by GPC, 1H-NMR, FTIR, UV, DSC, and WAXS. These photosensitive copolymers were irradiated by a 400-W high-pressure mercury lamp (λ>280 nm) from 5–60 min to form a network structure. The gel contents increased with irradiation time, and attained ca. 90% after 60 min for all copolymers. The degree of swelling in a distilled water at ambient temperature, and the rate of degradation in a phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.2) at 37 °C increased with increasing PEG components. The shape-memory tests were performed by a cyclic thermomechanical experiments for the photocured CAC/PCL/PEG (75/25) films. The film with a gel content of 57% showed the best shape-memory property with strain fixity rate of 100% and strain recovery rate of 88%.

Polymer complexation between poly(styrene-co-maleic acid), (SMA28) and (SMA50) containing 28 and 50 mol% of maleic acid and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), has been investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). All results showed that the ideal complex composition of SMA28/PVP and SMA50/PVP leads, respectively, to 2:1 and 1:1 mole ratio of interacting components. For the investigated systems, the Tg versus composition curve does not follow any of the usual proposed models for polymer blends. Withal, a new model proposed by Cowie et al. is used to fit the Tg data and it is found to reproduce the experimental results more closely. According to n and q obtained values, it seems reasonable to conclude that the inter-associated hydrogen bonds dominate in SMA28/PVP (2:1) complexes. This effect is corroborated by the FTIR study as evidenced by the high displacement of the specific bands and ionic interactions have been clearly identified. Finally, a thermogravimetric study shows that ionic interactions increase the thermal stability of these complexes.

Poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT)/poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) blends were miscible in the amorphous state in all of the blend compositions studied, as evidenced by a single, composition-dependent glass transition temperature (Tg) observed for each blend composition. The variation in the Tg value with the blend composition was well predicted by the Gordon-Taylor equation, with the fitting parameter being 0.57. The cold-crystallization peak temperature decreased with increasing PTT content, while the melt-crystallization peak temperature decreased with increasing amount of the minor component. The subsequent melting behavior after both cold- and melt-crystallization exhibited melting point depression, in which the observed melting temperatures decreased with increasing amount of the minor component. During melt-crystallization, both components in the blends crystallized concurrently just to form their own crystals. The blend with 60% w/w of PTT exhibited the lowest total apparent degree of crystallinity.
