The multivariate extremal index function is a direction specific extension of the well-known univariate extremal index. Since statistical inference on this function is difficult it is desirable to have a broad characterization of its attributes. We extend the set of common properties of the multivariate extremal index function and derive sharp bounds for the entire function given only marginal dependence. Our results correspond to certain restrictions on the two dependence functions defining the multivariate extremal index, which are opposed to Smith and Weissman’s (1996) conjecture on arbitrary dependence functions. We show further how another popular dependence measure, the extremal coefficient, is closely related to the multivariate extremal index. Thus, given the value of the former it turns out that the above bounds may be improved substantially. Conversely, we specify improved bounds for the extremal coefficient itself that capitalize on marginal dependence, thereby approximating two views of dependence that have frequently been treated separately. Our results are completed with example processes.   相似文献

In this work, we introduce the s,k-extremal coefficients for studying the tail dependence between the s-th lower and k-th upper order statistics of a normalized random vector. If its margins have tail dependence then so do their order statistics, with the strength of bivariate tail dependence decreasing as two order statistics become farther apart. Some general properties are derived for these dependence measures which can be expressed via copulas of random vectors. Its relations with other extremal dependence measures used in the literature are discussed, such as multivariate tail dependence coefficients, the coefficient η of tail dependence, coefficients based on tail dependence functions, the extremal coefficient ?, the multivariate extremal index and an extremal coefficient for min-stable distributions. Several examples are presented to illustrate the results, including multivariate exponential and multivariate Gumbel distributions widely used in applications.  相似文献

The tail dependence indexes of a multivariate distribution describe the amount of dependence in the upper right tail or lower left tail of the distribution and can be used to analyse the dependence among extremal random events. This paper examines the tail dependence of multivariate t-distributions whose copulas are not explicitly accessible. The tractable formulas of tail dependence indexes of a multivariate t-distribution are derived in terms of the joint moments of its underlying multivariate normal distribution, and the monotonicity properties of these indexes with respect to the distribution parameters are established. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the results.  相似文献

Orthant tail dependence of multivariate extreme value distributions   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The orthant tail dependence describes the relative deviation of upper- (or lower-) orthant tail probabilities of a random vector from similar orthant tail probabilities of a subset of its components, and can be used in the study of dependence among extreme values. Using the conditional approach, this paper examines the extremal dependence properties of multivariate extreme value distributions and their scale mixtures, and derives the explicit expressions of orthant tail dependence parameters for these distributions. Properties of the tail dependence parameters, including their relations with other extremal dependence measures used in the literature, are discussed. Various examples involving multivariate exponential, multivariate logistic distributions and copulas of Archimedean type are presented to illustrate the results.  相似文献

This paper investigates accurate approximations of marginal moment excess, marginal conditional tail moment and marginal moment shortfall for multivariate Gaussian system risks. Based on the dimension reduction property via the quadratic programming problem, the super-exponential and polynomial convergence speeds are specified. Two interesting questions involved in risk management are well addressed, namely the minimal additional risk capital injection to avoid infinite risk contagion and a sufficient and necessary condition to alternate the convergence speeds. Numerical study and typical examples are given to illustrate the efficiency of our findings. Due to the flexible moment order, additional applications may involve in risk management, including tail mean–variance portfolio and multivariate conditional risk measures of tail covariance, tail skewness with dependence and extremal risk contagion under consideration.  相似文献

Li et al. [Distributions with Fixed Marginals and Related Topics, vol. 28, Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, Hayward, CA, 1996, pp. 198-212] provide bounds on the distribution and on the tail for functions of dependent random vectors having fixed multivariate marginals. In this paper, we correct a result stated in the above article and we give improved bounds in the case of the sum of identically distributed random vectors. Moreover, we provide the dependence structures meeting the bounds when the fixed marginals are uniformly distributed on the k-dimensional hypercube. Finally, a definition of a multivariate risk measure is given along with actuarial/financial applications.  相似文献

The extremal coefficients are the natural dependence measures for multivariate extreme value distributions. For an m-variate distribution 2m distinct extremal coefficients of different orders exist; they are closely linked and therefore a complete set of 2m coefficients cannot take any arbitrary values. We give a full characterization of all the sets of extremal coefficients. To this end, we introduce a simple class of extreme value distributions that allows for a 1-1 mapping to the complete sets of extremal coefficients. We construct bounds that higher order extremal coefficients need to satisfy to be consistent with lower order extremal coefficients. These bounds are useful as lower order extremal coefficients are the most easily inferred from data.  相似文献

In this paper, we extend the concept of tail subadditivity (Belles-Sampera et al., 2014a; Belles-Sampera et al., 2014b) for distortion risk measures and give sufficient and necessary conditions for a distortion risk measure to be tail subadditive. We also introduce the generalized GlueVaR risk measures, which can be used to approach any coherent distortion risk measure. To further illustrate the applications of the tail subadditivity, we propose multivariate tail distortion (MTD) risk measures and generalize the multivariate tail conditional expectation (MTCE) risk measure introduced by Landsman et al. (2016). The properties of multivariate tail distortion risk measures, such as positive homogeneity, translation invariance, monotonicity, and subadditivity, are discussed as well. Moreover, we discuss the applications of the multivariate tail distortion risk measures in capital allocations for a portfolio of risks and explore the impacts of the dependence between risks in a portfolio and extreme tail events of a risk portfolio in capital allocations.  相似文献

The well-known M4 processes of Smith and Weissman are very flexible models for asymptotically dependent multivariate data. Extended M4 of Heffernan et al. allows to also account for asymptotic independence. In this paper we introduce a more general multivariate model comprising asymptotic dependence and independence, which has the extended M4 class as a particular case. We study properties of the proposed model. In particular, we compute the multivariate extremal index, tail dependence and extremal coefficients.  相似文献

For a risk vector V, whose components are shared among agents by some random mechanism, we obtain asymptotic lower and upper bounds for the individual agents’ exposure risk and the aggregated risk in the market. Risk is measured by Value-at-Risk or Conditional Tail Expectation. We assume Pareto tails for the components of V and arbitrary dependence structure in a multivariate regular variation setting. Upper and lower bounds are given by asymptotically independent and fully dependent components of V with respect to the tail index α being smaller or larger than 1. Counterexamples, where for non-linear aggregation functions no bounds are available, complete the picture.  相似文献

The main approach to inference for multivariate extremes consists in approximating the joint upper tail of the observations by a parametric family arising in the limit for extreme events. The latter may be expressed in terms of componentwise maxima, high threshold exceedances or point processes, yielding different but related asymptotic characterizations and estimators. The present paper clarifies the connections between the main likelihood estimators, and assesses their practical performance. We investigate their ability to estimate the extremal dependence structure and to predict future extremes, using exact calculations and simulation, in the case of the logistic model.  相似文献

In this article, copulas associated to multivariate conditional distributions in an Archimedean model are characterized. It is shown that this popular class of dependence structures is closed under the operation of conditioning, but that the associated conditional copula has a different analytical form in general. It is also demonstrated that the extremal copula for conditional Archimedean distributions is no longer the Fréchet upper bound, but rather a member of the Clayton family. Properties of these conditional distributions as well as conditional versions of tail dependence indices are also considered.  相似文献

Smith and Weissman introduced a M4 class of processes which are very flexible models for temporally dependent multivariate extreme value processes. However all variables in these M4 models are asymptotically dependent and what this paper does is to extend this M4 class in a number of ways to produce classes of models which are also asymptotically independent. We shall study properties of the proposed models. In particular, asymptotic dependence indexes, coefficients of tail dependence, and extremal indexes are derived for each case.  相似文献

We extend the characterizations given by Takahashi (1988) for the independence and the total dependence of the univariate marginals of a multivariate extreme value distribution to its multivariate marginals. We also deal with the problem of how to measure the strength of the dependence among multivariate extremes. By presenting new definitions for the extremal coefficient, we propose measures that summarize the dependence between two multivariate extreme value distributions and preserve the main properties of the known bivariate coefficient for two univariate extreme value distributions. Finally, we illustrate these contributions to model the dependence among multivariate marginals with examples.  相似文献

Tail dependence and conditional tail dependence functions describe, respectively, the tail probabilities and conditional tail probabilities of a copula at various relative scales. The properties as well as the interplay of these two functions are established based upon their homogeneous structures. The extremal dependence of a copula, as described by its extreme value copulas, is shown to be completely determined by its tail dependence functions. For a vine copula built from a set of bivariate copulas, its tail dependence function can be expressed recursively by the tail dependence and conditional tail dependence functions of lower-dimensional margins. The effect of tail dependence of bivariate linking copulas on that of a vine copula is also investigated.

We study the extremes of multivariate regularly varying random fields. The crucial tools in our study are the tail field and the spectral field, notions that extend the tail and spectral processes of Basrak and Segers (2009). The spatial context requires multiple notions of extremal index, and the tail and spectral fields are applied to clarify these notions and other aspects of extremal clusters. An important application of the techniques we develop is to the Brown–Resnick random fields.  相似文献

This paper studies the problem of finding best-possible upper bounds on a rich class of risk measures, expressible as integrals with respect to measures, under incomplete probabilistic information. Both univariate and multivariate risk measurement problems are considered. The extremal probability distributions, generating the worst case scenarios, are also identified. The problem of worst case risk measurement has been studied extensively by Etienne De Vijlder and his co-authors, within the framework of finite-dimensional convex analysis. This paper revisits and extends some of their results.  相似文献

A regularly varying time series as introduced in Basrak and Segers (2009) is a (multivariate) time series such that all finite dimensional distributions are multivariate regularly varying. The extremal behavior of such a process can then be described by the index of regular variation and the so-called spectral tail process, which is the limiting distribution of the rescaled process, given an extreme event at time 0. As shown in Basrak and Segers (2009), the stationarity of the underlying time series implies a certain structure of the spectral tail process, informally known as the “time change formula”. In this article, we show that on the other hand, every process which satisfies this property is in fact the spectral tail process of an underlying stationary max-stable process. The spectral tail process and the corresponding max-stable process then provide two complementary views on the extremal behavior of a multivariate regularly varying stationary time series.  相似文献

On the occasion of Laurens de Haan’s 70th birthday, we discuss two aspects of the statistical inference on the extreme value behavior of time series with a particular emphasis on his important contributions. First, the performance of a direct marginal tail analysis is compared with that of a model-based approach using an analysis of residuals. Second, the importance of the extremal index as a measure of the serial extremal dependence is discussed by the example of solutions of a stochastic recurrence equation.   相似文献
