Fragmentation of doubly charged argon clusters is reported. Neutral argon clusters are excited with monochromatized synchrotron radiation in the energy regime of the argonL 3/L 2 absorption edges (240–260 eV) leading predominantly to cluster dication formation. All charged particles are detected in a photoelectron-photoion-photoion-concidence (PEPIPICO) experiment. Symmetric and asymmetric charge separation reactions (Coulomb explosion) are identified for clusters below the critical size of stable dication formation. The peak shapes of the coincidence signals are investigated as a function of neutral cluster size. Characteristic changes in peak shape are observed which are used to derive fragmentation mechanisms involving sequential evaporation of neutrals before and after charge separation. The spectra indicate in accordance with low kinetic energy releases occurring in charge separation of large dissociative cluster dications (Ar n 2+ , withn>50) that due to large charge separation distances the momenta of both singly charged fragments are not any more directed into opposite direction, as it is typical for Coulomb explosion. The results are compared to collision induced fragmentation of mass selected argon cluster dications as well as photon stimulated desorption spectra of condensed argon.  相似文献

Carbon content in silicon nitride powders having mean particle size below 5 m was determined by slurry atomization inductively coupled plasmaatomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). A complete atomization of the solid particles was observed in a low power argon-ICP. The blank value of the carbon signal was reduced by using high purity argon, fresh bidistilled water and an extended torch. Silicon nitride slurries were analyzed by calibration and addition methods with acetic acid as reference. The results were in good agreement with data obtained by a LECO carbon analyzer. A blank restricted detection limit of 0.018% was calculated. The relative standard deviation of the analysis was below 7%.Presented in part at the 1989 European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry, Reutte, Austria  相似文献

Large coupled cluster computations utilizing the Dunning weighted correlation-consistent polarized core-valence (cc-pwCVXZ) hierarchy of basis sets have been conducted, resulting in a panoply of internally consistent geometries and atomization energies for small Li(n) and Li(n)H (n=1-4) clusters. In contrast to previous ab initio results, we predict a monotonic increase in atomization energies per atom with increasing cluster size for lithium clusters, in accordance with the historical Knudsen-effusion measurements of Wu. For hydrogenated lithium clusters, our results support previous theoretical work concerning the relatively low atomization energy per atom for Li(2)H compared to LiH and Li(3)H. The CCSD(T)/cc-pwCVQZ atomization energies for LiH, Li(2)H, Li(3)H, and the most stable isomer of Li(4)H, including zero-point energy corrections, are 55.7, 79.6, 113.0, and 130.6 kcal/mol, respectively. The latter results are not consistent with the most recent experiments of Wu.  相似文献

We have measured K–edge X–ray absorption spectra of argon in sputtered aluminum films at a synchrotron radiation facility (the Photon Factory). We found that the energy and shape of white line change when the film is annealed at 500 °C and the spectrum becomes resembling that of argon implanted in silicon. From the analyses of the X–ray absorption spectra and TEM observation we concluded that argon exists as very small atom clusters with a diameter less than 1 nm or exist as isolated atoms in the as–sputtered aluminum film, and that the size of the clusters become as big as 10 nm diameter when the film is heated.  相似文献

Photofragmentation of argon clusters of average size ranging from 10 up to 1000 atoms is studied using soft x-ray radiation below the 2p threshold and multicoincidence mass spectroscopy technique. For small clusters (=10), ionization induces fast fragmentation with neutral emission imparting a large amount of energy. While the primary dissociation takes place on a picosecond time scale, the fragments undergo slow degradation in the spectrometer on a microsecond time scale. For larger clusters ( >or=100) we believe that we observe the fragmentation pattern of multiply charged species on a time-scale which lasts a few hundred nanoseconds. The reason for these slower processes is the large number of neutral atoms which act as an efficient cooling bath where the excess energy ("heat") dissipates among all degrees of freedom. Further degradation of the photoionic cluster in spectrometer then takes place on the microsecond time scale, similar to small clusters.  相似文献

Single photon ionization of argon and krypton clusters has been studied in the region between threshold and the ionization potential of the corresponding atom. Synchrotron radiation from the electron storage ring BESSY is used to ionize the clusters; threshold-photo-electron-photoion-coincidence (TPEPICO)-time-of-flight technique is used to detect ions correlated with the emission of zero-kinetic-energy-electrons. The spectra of the clusters in the range ofn=2 to 15 are discussed in view of the extensive fragmentation taking place in these systems. In order to characterize the properties of the clusters a method using scaling laws is applied. The principles and the deduction of Hagena's scaling parameter Γ* are briefly reviewed. Using Γ* an experimentally derived mean cluster size for molecular beams can be assigned. This allows one to clearly demonstrate the systematic variations of the measured spectra due to cluster fragmentation. As a general feature it is observed that, in the range studied, the peak in the measured ionization rate for a cluster ion (fragment) of a given size shifts to higher photon energies as the mean cluster size is increased.  相似文献

The relation between VUV radiation spectra of argon and krypton supersonic jets excited by an electron beam and the mean size of clusters in a jet is studied. For each atomic and molecular emission of argon in the 104–120 nm range and of krypton from 116 to 130 nm, the maximum intensity is found to occur when electrons collide with clusters of a definite mean size. It is found that self-localized excitons of atomic type or diatomic excimer molecular type with a small binding energy (several hundredths of an eV) are mainly formed in outer icosahedral shells of argon or krypton clusters and those of diatomic excimer molecular type with a large binding energy (several tenths of an eV) arise principally in inner shells.  相似文献

The structures of Ag, Fe and Ge microclusters were determined using EXAFS. The measurements were performed over a wide range of clusters sizes. The clusters were prepared using the gas aggregation technique and isolated in solid argon at 4.2 K. The measurements were performed at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at beam line X-18B. A strong contraction of the interatomic distances was observed for Ag dimers and multimers. Silver clusters larger than 12 A mean diameter show a small contraction of thenn distance and a structure consistent with an fcc lattice. By contrast clusters smaller than 12 A show the presence of a small expansion and a strong reduction or absence ofnnn in the EXAFS signal. This points towards a different crystallographic structure for Ag microclusters with diameter less than 12 A. In iron clusters we observe a gradual reduction of thenn distance as the cluster size decreases. The interatomic distance for iron dimers was determined to be 1.94 A, in good agreement with earlier measurements. The iron microclusters show a bcc structure down to a mean diameter of 9 A. Iron clusters with 9 A mean diameter show a structure inconsistent with a bcc lattice. The new structure is consistent with an fcc or hcp lattice. The measurements on Ge clusters show the presence of only nearest neighbors. There was clear evidence of temporal annealing as determined by variations in the near edge structure of the K-absorption edge. Absorption edge measurements were also performed for free Ge clusters travelling perpendicular to the direction of the synchrotron radiation beam. The measurements performed on the free clusters were consistent with those obtained for matrix isolated clusters.  相似文献

We report the occurrence of interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) in mixed NeKr clusters. A well-defined feature ranging from 9 to 12 eV in kinetic energy is observed in coincidence with the Ne 2s photoelectrons. It derives from an ICD process, in which an initial Ne 2s vacancy is filled by a Ne 2p electron and an electron is emitted from a 4p level on a neighboring Kr atom. We have studied the dependence of the effect on photon energy, cluster composition, and cluster size. Interestingly, the ICD electron energy increases slightly and grows a shoulder on going from 2% to 5% Kr in the coexpansion process, which we interpret in terms of surface versus bulk effects.  相似文献

A tabletop soft x-ray laser is applied for the first time as a high energy photon source for chemical dynamics experiments in the study of water, methanol, and ammonia clusters through time of flight mass spectroscopy. The 26.5 eV/photon laser (pulse time duration of approximately 1 ns) is employed as a single photon ionization source for the detection of these clusters. Only a small fraction of the photon energy is deposited in the cluster for metastable dissociation of cluster ions, and most of it is removed by the ejected electron. Protonated water, methanol, and ammonia clusters dominate the cluster mass spectra. Unprotonated ammonia clusters are observed in the protonated cluster ion size range 2< or =n< or =22. The unimolecular dissociation rate constants for reactions involving loss of one neutral molecule are calculated to be (0.6-2.7)x10(4), (3.6-6.0)x10(3), and (0.8-2.0)x10(4) s(-1) for the protonated water (9< or =n< or =24), methanol (5< or =n< or =10), and ammonia (5< or =n< or =18) clusters, respectively. The temperatures of the neutral clusters are estimated to be between 40 and 200 K for water clusters (10< or =n< or =21), and 50-100 K for methanol clusters (6< or =n< or =10). Products with losses of up to five H atoms are observed in the mass spectrum of the neutral ammonia dimer. Large ammonia clusters (NH(3))(n) (n>3) do not lose more than three H atoms in the photoionization/photodissociation process. For all three cluster systems studied, single photon ionization with a 26.5 eV photon yields near threshold ionization. The temperature of these three cluster systems increases with increasing cluster size over the above-indicated ranges.  相似文献

van der Waals cluster (SO2)n is investigated by using single photon ionization of a 26.5 eV soft x-ray laser. During the ionization process, neutral clusters suffer a small fragmentation because almost all energy is taken away by the photoelectron and a small part of the photon energy is deposited into the (SO2)n cluster. The distribution of (SO2)n clusters decreases roughly exponentially with increasing cluster size. The photoionization dissociation fraction of I[(SO2)(n-1)SO+] / I[(SO2)n+] decreases with increasing cluster size due to the formation of cluster. The metastable dissociation rate constants of (SO2)n+ are measured in the range of (0.6-1.5) x 10(4) s(-1) for cluster sizes 5< or =n< or =16. Mixed SO2-H2O clusters are studied at different experimental conditions. At the condition of high SO2 concentration (20% SO2 partial pressure), (SO2)n+ cluster ions dominate the mass spectrum, and the unprotonated mixed cluster ions (SO2)nH2O+ (1< or =n< or =5) are observed. At the condition of low SO2 concentration (5% SO2 partial pressure) (H2O)nH+ cluster ions are the dominant signals, and protonated cluster ions (SO2)(H2O)nH+ are observed. The mixed clusters, containing only one SO2 or H2O molecule, SO2(H2O)nH+ and (SO2)nH2O+ are observed, respectively.  相似文献

Evaporation of small Lennard-Jones argon clusters has been studied using molecular dynamic simulations. An extensive library of clusters with 4, 5, 6, 11, and 21 atoms has been obtained from an earlier study. Analysis of the evaporation properties of the clusters indicate, that the fraction of dimer evaporations of all evaporation events increases with the total energy of the cluster. The fraction of evaporated dimers from clusters with a constant lifetime is independent of the cluster size for short-lived clusters and increases with cluster size for long-lived clusters. Only a few percent of the clusters which are long lived enough to participate in vapor-liquid nucleation decay by emitting dimers. The mean cluster lifetime as a function of total energy shows the same exponentially decreasing trend for monomer and dimer evaporation channels. The fraction of trimer evaporations is found to be vanishingly small.  相似文献

Ostwald ripening is an important growth process in many scientific disciplines ranging from material science, geology, biophysics, and product formulation. Here ripening of argon clusters in a vapor phase is observed directly in constant energy molecular dynamics simulations serving as a model system for large-time scale ripening processes. Starting from an initial metastable equilibrium between the vapor phase and two clusters Ostwald ripening is initiated by the addition of kinetic energy. This mimics local thermal fluctuations in a larger system. It appears that there is not necessarily a close encounter of two clusters before ripening sets in. Also no static density bridge between two ripening clusters is observed. The onset of ripening is rather related to the different evaporation dynamics of clusters of different size. It can start at the moment energy is added or with some delay, depending on the difference in cluster size and dynamics.  相似文献

It is widely believed that the lowest energy configurations for small rare gas clusters have icosahedral symmetry. This contrasts with the bulk crystal structures which have cuboctahedral fcc symmetry. It is of interest to understand the transition between this finite and bulk behavior. To model this transition in rare gas clusters we have undertaken optimization studies within the Lennard-Jones pair potential model. Using a combination of Monte Carlo and Partan Search optimization methods, the lowest energy relaxed structures of Lennard-Jones clusters having icosahedral and cuboctahedral symmetry were found. Studies were performed for complete shell clusters ranging in size from one shell having 13 atoms to 14 shells having 10,179 atoms. It was found that the icosahedral structures are lower in energy than the cuboctahedral structures for cluster sizes having 13 shells or fewer. Additional studies were performed using the more accurate Aziz-Chen [HFD-C] pair potential parameterized for argon. The conclusions appear to be relatively insensitive to the form of the potential.  相似文献

Photoemission spectra of valence electrons in metal clusters, together with threshold ionization potential measurements, provide a coherent picture of the development of the electronic structure from the isolated atom to the large metallic cluster. An insulator-metal transition occurs at an intermediate cluster size, which serves to define the boundary between small and large clusters. Although the outer electrons may be delocalized over the entire cluster, a small cluster remains insulating until the density of states near the Fermi level exceeds 1/kT. In large clusters, with increasing cluster size, the band structure approaches that of the bulk metal. However, the bands remain significantly narrowed even in a 1000-atom cluster, giving an indication of the importance of long-range order. The core-electron binding-energy shifts of supported metal clusters depend on changes in the band structure in the initial state, as well as on various final-state effects, including changes in core hole screening and the coulomb energy of the final-state charge. For cluster supported on amorphous carbon, this macroscopic coulomb shift is often dominant, as evidenced by the parallel shifts of the core-electron binding energy and the Fermi edge. Auger data confirm that final-state effects dominate in cluster of Sn and some other metals. Surface atom core-level shifts provide a valuable guide to the contributions of initial-state changes in band structure to cluster core-electron binding energy shifts, especially for Au and Pt. The available data indicate that the shift observed in supported, metallic clusters arise largely from the charge left on the cluster by photoemission. As the metal-insulator transition is approached from above, metallic screening is suppressed and the shift is determined by the local environment.  相似文献

Textural and energetic proprieties of kaolinite were studied by low-pressure argon adsorption at 77 K. The heterogeneity of four kaolinites (two low-defect and two high-defect samples) modified on their surface by cation exchange with Li+, Na+, or K+ was studied by DIS analysis of the derivative argon adsorption isotherms. The comparison between the derivative adsorption isotherms shows that the nature of the surface cation influences the adsorption phenomena on edge and basal faces. In the case of basal faces, two adsorption domains are observed: for the first one, argon adsorption is slightly sensitive to the nature of the surface cation; for the second one, argon adsorption energy depends on the nature of surface cation suggesting their presence on theoretically uncharged basal faces. This study also shows that the shape of elementary particles, as derived from basal and edge surface areas, changes with the nature of cation. This anomalous result is due to the decrease of edge surface area with increasing the size of the cation. This surface cation dependence can be accounted for the area occupied by the edge surface cations in the first argon monolayer.  相似文献

The electronic structure of Sn(n) (-) clusters (n=4-45) was examined using photoelectron spectroscopy at photon energies of 6.424 eV (193 nm) and 4.661 eV (266 nm) to probe the semiconductor-to-metal transition. Well resolved photoelectron spectra were obtained for small Sn(n) (-) clusters (n< or =25), whereas more congested spectra were observed with increasing cluster size. A distinct energy gap was observed in the photoelectron spectra of Sn(n) (-) clusters with n< or =41, suggesting the semiconductor nature of small neutral tin clusters. For Sn(n) (-) clusters with n> or =42, the photoelectron spectra became continuous and no well-defined energy gap was observed, indicating the onset of metallic behavior for the large Sn(n) clusters. The photoelectron spectra thus revealed a distinct semiconductor-to-metal transition for Sn(n) clusters at n=42. The spectra of small Sn(n) (-) clusters (n< or =13) were also compared with those of the corresponding Si(n) (-) and Ge(n) (-) clusters, and similarities were found between the spectra of Sn(n) (-) and those of Ge(n) (-) in this size range, except for Sn(12) (-), which led to the discovery of stannaspherene (the icosahedral Sn(12) (2-)) previously [L. F. Cui et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 128, 8391 (2006)].  相似文献

The formation of Ar 2 + ions has been investigated by means of the threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence (TPEPICO) technique. Two pathways for the formation of Ar 2 + ions are important. One is a direct path via excitation of Rydberg states of Ar2 with consecutive autoionization. The other path is dissociative ionization of larger argon clusters, in this case argon trimers. These two pathways lead to Ar 2 + ions with different internal energy. The pathways are easily distinguished in the TPEPICO-TOF spectra by the kinetic energy released (KER) in the dissociative ionization. The KER for the reaction Ar 3 + → Ar 2 + + Ar was measured as a function of the photon energy and compared to the KER expected from statistical theory. The agreement is satisfying and confirms that Ar 3 + ions do indeed dissociate at the thermochemical threshold. At higher photon energy the excited2Π(3/2)g state of Ar 3 + is also detected from a second component in the KER. By applying a kinetic energy discrimination it is possible to measure cluster ion spectra in the presence of larger clusters but essentially without interference from the latter.  相似文献

Electronic excitation and ionic dissociation of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and dimethyldisulfide (DMDS) have been studied around the S 2p edge using synchrotron radiation and time-of-flight mass spectrometry techniques. Mass spectra were obtained for both molecules, below, on and above the well defined resonances observed in the S 2p photoabsorption spectrum and centered at approximately 166 eV photon energy. Ab initio IS-CASSCF calculations were performed for a better understanding of the photoabsorption spectra. Similar calculations were also performed for the H(2)S molecule, in order to establish a bench mark. For both molecules, a higher fragmentation degree is observed with increasing photon energy. In the DMDS case, selective fragmentation was observed in the formation of the [CH(n)S](+) ions at the first S 2p resonance (corresponding to excitation to a σ*SS state) and in the formation of the [S(2)](+) and [S](+) ions at the third S 2p resonance (corresponding to excitation to a σ*CS state). Previously unreported doubly charged ([S](2+), [CH(3)](2+)) are observed for DMS and DMDS.  相似文献

Bisulfate water clusters, HSO(4)(-)(H(2)O)(n), have been studied both experimentally by a quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer and by quantum chemical calculations. For the cluster distributions studied, there are some possible "magic number" peaks, although the increase in abundance compared to their neighbours is small. Experiments with size-selected clusters with n = 0-25, reacting with D(2)O at a center-of-mass energy of 0.1 eV, were performed, and it was observed that the rate of hydrogen/deuterium exchange is lower for the smallest clusters (n < 8) than for the larger (n > 11), with a transition taking place in the range n = 8-11. We propose that the protonic defect of the bisulfate ion remains rather stationary unless the degree of hydration reaches a given level. In addition, it was observed that H/D scrambling becomes close to statistically randomized for the larger clusters. Insight into this size dependency was obtained by B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) calculations for HSO(4)(-)(H(2)O)(n) with n = 0-10. In agreement with experimental observations, these calculations suggest pronounced effectiveness of a 'see-saw mechanism' for pendular proton transfer with increasing HSO(4)(-)(H(2)O)(n) cluster size.  相似文献
