The theoretical aspects of the physics of Higgs bosons are reviewed focussing on the elements that are relevant for the production and detection at present hadron colliders. After briefly summarizing the basics of electroweak symmetry breaking in the Standard Model, the Higgs production at the LHC and at the Tevatron is discussed, with some focus on the main production mechanism, the gluon?Cgluon fusion process, and the main Higgs decay modes and the experimental detection channels are discussed. Then the case of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model is briefly surveyed. In the last section, the prospects for determining the fundamental properties of the Higgs particles are reviewed, once they have been experimentally observed.  相似文献

I discuss several recent highly accurate theoretical predictions for masses of baryons containing the b quark, especially Ωb (ssb) very recently reported by CDF. I also point out an approximate effective supersymmetry between heavy quark baryons and mesons and provide predictions for the magnetic moments of Λc and Λb. Proper treatment of the color-magnetic hyperfine interaction in QCD is crucial for obtaining these results.  相似文献

The eminent mathematical physicist Sir Hermann Bondi once said: There is no more to science than its method, and there is no more to its method than Popper has said. Indeed, many regard Sir Karl Raimund Popper the greatest philosopher of science in our generation. Much of what Popper has said refers to physics, but physicists, generally speaking, have little knowledge of what he has said. True, Popper's philosophy of science and, in particular, his realistic interpretation of quantum mechanics deviates considerably from the generally accepted doctrine. But as Popper, rightly I think, points out, it is precisely the proliferation of divergent theories which promotes the growth of scientific knowledge; it would be a danger for physics if physicists were dogmatically tied to a single theory or would not test their theory against alternatives. It is for this purpose that, on the occasion of the nonagenarian celebration of Popper's birthday, the present essay has been written.  相似文献

Atom lasers based on rf-outcoupling can be described by a set of coupled generalized Gross–Pitaevskii equations (GPE). We compare the theoretical predictions obtained by numerically integrating the time-dependent GPE of an effective one-dimensional model with recently measured experimental data for the F=2 and F=1 states of Rb-87. We conclude that the output of a rf atom-laser can be described by this model in a satisfactory way. Possible hints on neutrino masses are reviewed. They come from the deficits in the solar as well as atmospheric neutrinos and from need of a significant amount of hot component in the dark matter of the universe. The role of three generation mixing in simultaneously solving the solar and atmospheric neutrino problem is discussed. All the three hints can be reconciled if three neutrinos are almost degenerate. Models for neutrino masses and mixing implied by the above hints are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The magnetization process of the spin-1 Heisenberg dimer model with the uniaxial or biaxial single-ion anisotropy is particularly investigated in connection with recent experimental high-field measurements performed on the single-crystal sample of the homodinuclear nickel(II) compound [Ni2(Medpt)2(μ-ox)(H2O)2](ClO4)2·2H2O (Medpt=methyl-bis(3-aminopropyl)amine). The results obtained from the exact numerical diagonalization indicate a striking magnetization process with a marked spatial dependence on the applied magnetic field for arbitrary but finite single-ion anisotropy. It is demonstrated that the field range, which corresponds to an intermediate magnetization plateau emerging at a half of the saturation magnetization, basically depends on a single-ion anisotropy strength as well as a spatial orientation of the applied field. The breakdown of the intermediate magnetization plateau is discussed at length in relation to the single-ion anisotropy strength.  相似文献
