We assume complex magnetic and dielectric properties of two adjacent, isotropic, semi-infinite media and examine surface electromagnetic waves (SEW) at their plane interface. The dispersion curves and non-radiative conditions are derived and compared with other results. Comments are made about which materials will allow surface electromagnetic waves. The importances of the dielectric constants of the sample and the overlayer materials are emphasized with an example, Si and NiO.  相似文献

Varying electromagnetic fields at the surface of a superconductor are studied by means of the boson method. It is found that the frequency of the surface electromagnetic waves satisfies a dispersion relation which is entirely controlled by the system itself.  相似文献

The absorption of surface electromagnetic waves in Cr has been measured from 4K up to temperatures just above the Neel temperature TN = 312K at a frequency large enough to excite electrons across the antiferromagnetic energy gap. We analyze the propagation of electromagnetic waves through chiral media, i.e., through composite media consisting of macroscopic chiral objects randomly embedded in a dielectric. The peculiar effects that such media have on the polarization properties of the waves are placed in evidence. To demonstrate the physical basis of these effects, a specific example, chosen for its analytical simplicity, is worked out from first principles.  相似文献

Surface electromagnetic waves propagating along a Fermi liquid-dielectric interface are investigated. A dispersion relation for the surface waves is obtained, and the frequency range of their existence is determined. The possibility of determining the contribution of a Fermi liquid to the dielectric permittivity of a metal from experiments on excitation of surface electromagnetic waves is shown.  相似文献

The scattering of electromagnetic waves in fractal media is studied. The fractal dimension is naturally involved in the formulation of two physical problems studied in this paper. The general theory of multiple scattering of electromagnetic wave in fractal media is developed by modifying Twersky's theory. Statistical quantities, such as the average field and average intensity of the multiple scattered wave, are studied for a wave propagating in a fractal medium. The scattering cross section of the medium is deduced. The backscattering of electromagnetic waves is also studied. The results showing the range of dependence of the backscattered signals are in agreement with numerical simulations by Rastogi and Scheucher (1990). It also suggests a method of measuring the fractal dimension of the fractal embedded media using radar sounding. The theory developed in this paper can also be used for problems related to multiple scattering of other kinds of waves, such as acoustic waves, elastic waves etc, in fractal media.  相似文献

Exact solutions of the wave equation for the propagation of electromagnetic waves in some inhomogeneous media are found. We predict that the interface of materials with defocusing thermal nonlinearities supports stable fundamental and higher-order surface waves when the opposite edges of the medium are maintained at different temperatures. Such surface waves exist due to the interplay between repulsion from the interface and the defocusing thermal nonlinearity that deflects light beams from the bulk of the medium toward its edges.  相似文献

Electromagnetic wave propagation in anisotropic dielectric media with two generic matrices εij and μij of permittivity and permeability is studied. In the framework of a metric-free electrodynamics approach, a compact tensorial dispersion relation is derived. The derivation does not require the corresponding matrices to be symmetric, positive definite, nor even invertible. The resulting formula is useful for a theoretical and experimental study of electromagnetic wave propagation in a wide class of linear media.  相似文献

From the beginning of the 20th century, researchers have been interested in surface electromagnetic waves guided by planar interfaces of dissimilar mediums. Much initial research on surface‐plasmon waves and surface‐plasmon‐polariton waves stemmed from theoretical curiosity, but the development of new experimental techniques propelled commercial exploitation for optical sensors of chemical and biological species. Additional surface waves called Dyakonov waves, Tamm waves, and Dyakonov–Tamm waves have emerged during the last 25 years. Experimental observation of Dyakonov waves was reported only in 2009, but the rapid development of experimental apparatus during the 1990s suggests that theoretical predictions will soon be evaluated experimentally, leading to further development of optical detection systems and optical circuitry.  相似文献

A theory of surface plasmon-polariton wave propagation along an interface of an optically active medium and metal or metamaterial has been developed. It is shown that optical activity leads to changing of cross section and polarization of the surface modes, whereas the propagation constant in first approximation does not depend on the gyrotropy coefficient.  相似文献
