The purpose of this note is to characterize the finite Hilbert functions which force all of their artinian algebras to enjoy the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). Curiously, they turn out to be exactly those (characterized by Wiebe in [A. Wiebe, The Lefschetz property for componentwise linear ideals and Gotzmann ideals, Comm. Algebra 32 (12) (2004) 4601-4611]) whose Gotzmann ideals have the WLP.This implies that, if a Gotzmann ideal has the WLP, then all algebras with the same Hilbert function (and hence lower Betti numbers) have the WLP as well. However, we will answer in the negative, even in the case of level algebras, the most natural question that one might ask after reading the previous sentence: If A is an artinian algebra enjoying the WLP, do all artinian algebras with the same Hilbert function as A and Betti numbers lower than those of A have the WLP as well? Also, as a consequence of our result, we have another (simpler) proof of the fact that all codimension 2 algebras enjoy the WLP (this fact was first proven in [T. Harima, J. Migliore, U. Nagel, J. Watanabe, The weak and strong Lefschetz properties for Artinian K-algebras, J. Algebra 262 (2003) 99-126], where it was shown that even the Strong Lefschetz Property holds).  相似文献

We introduce a new type of Hessian matrix, that we call Mixed Hessian. The mixed Hessian is used to compute the rank of a multiplication map by a power of a linear form in a standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebra. In particular we recover the main result of a paper by Maeno and Watanabe for identifying Strong Lefschetz elements, generalizing it also for Weak Lefschetz elements. This criterion is also used to give a new proof that Boolean algebras have the Strong Lefschetz Property. We also construct new examples of Artinian Gorenstein algebras presented by quadrics that does not satisfy the Weak Lefschetz Property; we construct minimal examples of such algebras and we give bounds, depending on the degree, for their existence. Artinian Gorenstein algebras presented by quadrics were conjectured to satisfy WLP in two papers by Migliore and Nagel, and in a previous paper we constructed the first counter-examples.  相似文献

An SI-sequence is a finite sequence of positive integers which is symmetric, unimodal and satisfies a certain growth condition. These are known to correspond precisely to the possible Hilbert functions of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras with the weak Lefschetz property, a property shared by a nonempty open set of the family of all graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras having a fixed Hilbert function that is an SI sequence. Starting with an arbitrary SI-sequence, we construct a reduced, arithmetically Gorenstein configuration G of linear varieties of arbitrary dimension whose Artinian reduction has the given SI-sequence as Hilbert function and has the weak Lefschetz property. Furthermore, we show that G has maximal graded Betti numbers among all arithmetically Gorenstein subschemes of projective space whose Artinian reduction has the weak Lefschetz property and the given Hilbert function. As an application we show that over a field of characteristic zero every set of simplicial polytopes with fixed h-vector contains a polytope with maximal graded Betti numbers.  相似文献

The weak and strong Lefschetz properties are two basic properties that Artinian algebras may have. Both Lefschetz properties may vary under small perturbations or changes of the characteristic. We study these subtleties by proposing a systematic way of deforming a monomial ideal failing the weak Lefschetz property to an ideal with the same Hilbert function and the weak Lefschetz property. In particular, we lift a family of Artinian monomial ideals to finite level sets of points in projective space with the property that a general hyperplane section has the weak Lefschetz property in almost all characteristics, whereas a special hyperplane section does not have this property in any characteristic.  相似文献

Let A be a standard graded Artinian K-algebra, with char K=0. We prove the following.
1.
A has the Weak Lefschetz Property (resp. Strong Lefschetz Property) if and only if has the Weak Lefschetz Property (resp. Strong Lefschetz Property) for some linear form z of A.
2.
If A is Gorenstein, then A has the Strong Lefschetz Property if and only if there exists a linear form z of A such that all central simple modules of (A,z) have the Strong Lefschetz Property.
As an application of these theorems, we give some new classes of Artinian complete intersections with the Strong Lefschetz Property.  相似文献

In this paper we study some problems concerning bigraded ideals. By introducing the concept of bigeneric initial ideal, we answer an open question about diagonal subalgebras and we give a necessary condition for a function to be the bigraded Hilbert function of a bigraded algebra. Moreover, we give an upper bound for the regularity of a bistable ideal in terms of the degrees of its generators.  相似文献

The Cayley-Bacharach Property (CBP), which has been classically stated as a property of a finite set of points in an affine or projective space, is extended to arbitrary 0-dimensional affine algebras over arbitrary base fields. We present characterizations and explicit algorithms for checking the CBP directly, via the canonical module, and in combination with the property of being a locally Gorenstein ring. Moreover, we characterize strict Gorenstein rings by the CBP and the symmetry of their affine Hilbert function, as well as by the strict CBP and the last difference of their affine Hilbert function.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the Hilbert scheme of non degenerate locally Cohen- Macaulay projective curves with general hyperplane section spanning a linear space of dimension 2 and minimal Hilbert function. The main result is that those curves are almost always the general element of a generically smooth component Hn,d,g of the corresponding Hilbert scheme. Moreover, we show that the curves with maximal cohomology almost always correspond to smooth points of Hn,d,g.All the authors were partially supported by Acción Integrada Italia-España, HI2000-0091, and by the Italian counterpart of the project.  相似文献

In this article we study Hilbert functions and isomorphism classes of Artinian level local algebras via Macaulay's inverse system. Upper and lower bounds concerning numerical functions admissible for level algebras of fixed type and socle degree are known. For each value in this range we exhibit a level local algebra with that Hilbert function, provided that the socle degree is at most three. Furthermore, we prove that level local algebras of socle degree three and maximal Hilbert function are graded. In the graded case, the extremal strata have been parametrized by Cho and Iarrobino.  相似文献

We show that the unitary group of a separable Hilbert space has Kazhdan's Property (T), when it is equipped with the strong operator topology. More precisely, for every integer m 2, we give an explicit Kazhdan set consisting of m unitary operators and determine an optimal Kazhdan constant for this set. Moreover, we show that a locally compact group with Kazhdan's Property (T) has a finite Kazhdan set if and only if its Bohr compactification has a finite Kazhdan set. As a consequence, if a locally compact group with Property (T) is minimally almost periodic, then it has a finite Kazhdan set.  相似文献

We use tools and methods from real algebraic geometry (spaces of ultrafilters, elimination of quantifiers) to formulate a theory of convexity in KN over an arbitrary ordered field. By defining certain ideal points (which can be viewed as generalizations of recession cones) we obtain a generalized notion of polar set. These satisfy a form of polar duality that applies to general convex sets and does not reduce to classical duality if K is the field of real numbers. As an application we give a partial classification of total orderings of Artinian local rings and two applications to ordinary convex geometry over the real numbers.  相似文献

In this note we develop some of the properties of separators of points in a multiprojective space. In particular, we prove multigraded analogs of results of Geramita, Maroscia, and Roberts relating the Hilbert function of and via the degree of a separator, and Abrescia, Bazzotti, and Marino relating the degree of a separator to shifts in the minimal multigraded free resolution of the ideal of points.  相似文献

An {a1,…,an}-lex plus powers ideal is a monomial ideal in Ik[x1,…,xn] which minimally contains the regular sequence x1a1,…,xnan and such that whenever mRt is a minimal generator of I and m′∈Rt is greater than m in lex order, then m′∈I. Conjectures of Eisenbud et al. and Charalambous and Evans predict that after restricting to ideals containing a regular sequence in degrees {a1,…,an}, then {a1,…,an}-lex plus powers ideals have extremal properties similar to those of the lex ideal. That is, it is proposed that a lex plus powers ideal should give maximum possible Hilbert function growth (Eisenbud et al.), and, after fixing a Hilbert function, that the Betti numbers of a lex plus powers ideal should be uniquely largest (Charalambous, Evans). The first of these assertions would extend Macaulay's theorem on Hilbert function growth, while the second improves the Bigatti, Hulett, Pardue theorem that lex ideals have largest graded Betti numbers. In this paper we explore these two conjectures. First we give several equivalent forms of each statement. For example, we demonstrate that the conjecture for Hilbert functions is equivalent to the statement that for a given Hilbert function, lex plus powers ideals have the most minimal generators in each degree. We use this result to prove that it is enough to show that lex plus powers ideals have the most minimal generators in the highest possible degree. A similar result holds for the stronger conjecture. In this paper we also prove that if the weaker conjecture holds, then lex plus powers ideals are guaranteed to have largest socles. This suffices to show that the two conjectures are equivalent in dimension ?3, which proves the monomial case of the conjecture for Betti numbers in those degrees. In dimension 2, we prove both conjectures outright.  相似文献

In [4], Agler and McCarthy (2005) used Hilbert function spaces to study the uniqueness properties of the Nevanlinna-Pick problem on the bidisc. In this work we give a geometric procedure for constructing a Nevanlinna-Pick problem on Dn with a specified set of uniqueness. On the way to establishing this procedure, we prove a result about Hilbert function spaces and partially answer a question posed by Agler and McCarthy.  相似文献

We study Hilbert functions of certain non-reduced schemes A supported at finite sets of points in , in particular, fat point schemes. We give combinatorially defined upper and lower bounds for the Hilbert function of A using nothing more than the multiplicities of the points and information about which subsets of the points are linearly dependent. When N=2, we give these bounds explicitly and we give a sufficient criterion for the upper and lower bounds to be equal. When this criterion is satisfied, we give both a simple formula for the Hilbert function and combinatorially defined upper and lower bounds on the graded Betti numbers for the ideal IA defining A, generalizing results of Geramita et al. (2006) [16]. We obtain the exact Hilbert functions and graded Betti numbers for many families of examples, interesting combinatorially, geometrically, and algebraically. Our method works in any characteristic.  相似文献
