The recently developed (Song, L.; Wu, W.; Zhang, Q.; Shaik, S. J. Phys. Chem. A 2004, 108, 6017-6024) valence bond method coupled to a polarized continuum model (VBPCM) is used to address the long standing conundrum of the heterolytic dissociation of the C-Cl and Si-Cl bonds, respectively, in tertiary-butyl chloride and trimethylsilyl chloride in condensed phases. The method is used here to compare the bond dissociation in the gas phase and in aqueous solution. In addition to the ground state reaction profile, VB theory also provides the energies of the purely covalent and purely ionic VB structures as a function of the reaction coordinate. Accordingly, the C-Cl and Si-Cl bonds are shown to be of different natures. In the gas phase, the resonance energy arising from covalent-ionic mixing at equilibrium geometry amounts to 42 kcal/mol for tertiary-butyl chloride, whereas the same quantity for trimethylsilyl chloride is significantly higher at 62 kcal/mol. With such a high value, the root cause of the Si-Cl bonding is the covalent-ionic resonance energy, and this bond belongs to the category of charge-shift bonds (Shaik, S.; Danovich, D.; Silvi, B.; Lauvergnat, D.; Hiberty, P. C. Chem.- Eur. J. 2005, 11, 6358). This difference between the C-Cl and Si-Cl bonds carries over to the solvated phase and impacts the heterolytic cleavages of the two bonds. For both molecules, solvation lowers the ionic curve below the covalent one, and hence the bond dissociation in the solvent generates the two ions, Me3E+ Cl- (E = C, Si). In both cases, the root cause of the barrier is the loss of the covalent-ionic resonance energy. In the heterolysis reaction of Si-Cl, the covalent-ionic resonance energy remains large and fully contributes to the dissociation energy, thereby leading to a high barrier for heterolytic cleavage, and thus prohibiting the generation of ions. By contrast, the covalent-ionic resonance energy is smaller for the C-Cl bond and only partially contributes to the barrier for heterolysis, which is consequently small, leading readily to ions that are commonly observed in the classical SN1 mechanism. Thus, the reluctance of R3Si-X molecules to undergo heterolysis in condensed phases and more generally the rarity of free silicenium ions under these conditions are experimental manifestations of the charge-shift character of the Si-Cl bond.  相似文献

This paper deals with a central paradigm of chemistry, the electron-pair bond. Valence bond (VB) theory and electron-localization function (ELF) calculations of 21 single bonds demonstrate that along the two classical bond families of covalent and ionic bonds, there exists a class of charge-shift bonds (CS bonds) in which the fluctuation of the electron pair density plays a dominant role. In VB theory, CS bonding manifests by way of a large covalent-ionic resonance energy, RE(CS), and in ELF by a depleted basin population with large variances (fluctuations). CS bonding is shown to be a fundamental mechanism that is necessary to satisfy the equilibrium condition, namely the virial ratio of the kinetic and potential energy contributions to the bond energy. The paper defines the atomic propensity and territory for CS bonding: Atoms (fragments) that are prone to CS bonding are compact electronegative and/or lone-pair-rich species. As such, the territory of CS bonding transcends considerations of static charge distribution, and involves: a) homopolar bonds of heteroatoms with zero static ionicity, b) heteropolar sigma and pi bonds of the electronegative and/or electron-pair-rich elements among themselves and to other atoms (e.g., the higher metalloids, Si, Ge, Sn, etc), c) all hypercoordinate molecules. Several experimental manifestations of charge-shift bonding are discussed, such as depleted bonding density, the rarity of ionic chemistry of silicon in condensed phases, and the high barriers of halogen-transfer reactions as compared to hydrogen-transfers.  相似文献

Ab initio MP2/aug'-cc-pVTZ calculations have been carried out to determine the structures, binding energies, and bonding of complexes FCl:CNX, with X = CN, NC, NO(2), F, CF(3), Cl, Br, H, CCF, CCH, CH(3), SiH(3), Li, and Na. Equation-of-motion coupled cluster calculations have also been carried out to determine the coupling constants (1)J(F-Cl), (1X)J(Cl-C), and (2X)J(F-C) across these halogen bonds. As the strength of the base is systematically increased, the nature of the halogen bond changes from traditional, to chlorine-shared, to ion-pair. The type of halogen bond present in a complex can be readily determined from its structure, binding energy, AIM bonding analyses, and spin-spin coupling constants. Coupling constants across halogen bonds are compared with corresponding coupling constants across traditional, proton-shared, and ion-pair hydrogen bonds.  相似文献

The X(3)(-) hypercoordinated anions (H, F, Cl, Br, I) are studied by means of the breathing-orbital valence bond ab initio method. The valence bond wave functions describe the different X(3)(-) complexes in terms of only six valence bond structures and yield energies relative to the two exit channels, X(2) + X(-) and X(2)(-) + X(*), in very good agreement with reference CCSD(T) calculations. Although H(3)(-) is unstable and dissociates to H(2) + H(-), all the trihalogen anions are stable intermediates, Br(3)(-) and I(3)(-) being more stable than F(3)(-) and Cl(3)(-). As a challenge to the traditional Rundle-Pimentel model, the different energies of the hypercoordinated species relative to the normal-valent dissociation products X(2) + X(-) are interpreted in terms of valence bond configuration mixing diagrams and found to correlate with a single parameter of the X(2) molecule, its singlet-triplet energy gap. Examination of the six-structure wave functions show that H(3)(-), Cl(3)(-), Br(3)(-), and I(3)(-) share the same bonding picture and can be mainly described in terms of the interplay of two Lewis structures. On the other hand, F(3)(-) is bonded in a different way and possesses a significant three-electron bonding character that is responsible for the dissociation of this complex to F(2)(-) + F(*), instead of the more stable products F(2) + F(-). This counterintuitive preference for the thermodynamically disfavored exit channel is found to be an experimental manifestation of the large charge-shift resonance energy that generally characterizes fluorine-containing bonds.  相似文献

Halogen bonding, a specific intermolecular noncovalent interaction, plays crucial roles in fields as diverse as molecular recognition, crystal engineering, and biological systems. This paper presents an ab initio investigation of a series of dimeric complexes formed between bromobenzene and several electron donors. Such small model systems are selected to mimic halogen bonding interactions found within crystal structures as well as within biological molecules. In all cases, the intermolecular distances are shown to be equal to or below sums of van der Waals radii of the atoms involved. Halogen bonding energies, calculated at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level, span over a wide range, from -1.52 to -15.53 kcal/mol. The interactions become comparable to, or even prevail over, classical hydrogen bonding. For charge-assisted halogen bonds, calculations have shown that the strength decreases in the order OH- > F- > HCO2- > Cl- > Br-, while for neutral systems, their relative strengths attenuate in the order H2CS > H2CO > NH3 > H2S > H2O. These results agree with those of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) since bond critical points (BCPs) are identified for these halogen bonds. The QTAIM analysis also suggests that strong halogen bonds are more covalent in nature, while weak ones are mostly electrostatic interactions. The electron densities at the BCPs are recommended as a good measure of the halogen bond strength. Finally, natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis has been applied to gain more insights into the origin of halogen bonding interactions.  相似文献

The MP2 ab initio quantum chemistry methods were utilized to study the halogen‐bond and pnicogen‐bond system formed between PH2X (X = Br, CH3, OH, CN, NO2, CF3) and BrY (Y = Br, Cl, F). Calculated results show that all substituent can form halogen‐bond complexes while part substituent can form pnicogen‐bond complexes. Traditional, chlorine‐shared and ion‐pair halogen‐bonds complexes have been found with the different substituent X and Y. The halogen‐bonds are stronger than the related pnicogen‐bonds. For halogen‐bonds, strongly electronegative substituents which are connected to the Lewis acid can strengthen the bonds and significantly influenced the structures and properties of the compounds. In contrast, the substituents which connected to the Lewis bases can produce opposite effects. The interaction energies of halogen‐bonds are 2.56 to 32.06 kcal·mol?1; The strongest halogen‐bond was found in the complex of PH2OH???BrF. The interaction energies of pnicogen‐bonds are in the range 1.20 to 2.28 kcal·mol?1; the strongest pnicogen‐bond was found in PH2Br???Br2 complex. The charge transfer of lp(P) ? σ*(Br? Y), lp(F) ? σ*(Br? P), and lp(Br) ? σ*(X? P) play important roles in the formation of the halogen‐bonds and pnicogen‐bonds, which lead to polarization of the monomers. The polarization caused by the halogen‐bond is more obvious than that by the pnicogen‐bond, resulting in that some halogen‐bonds having little covalent character. The symmetry adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) energy decomposition analysis showes that the halogen‐bond and pnicogen‐bond interactions are predominantly electrostatic and dispersion, respectively.  相似文献

Halogen bonding has recently become an effective tool to control the spin state of reactive carbenes. In this work, a series of the complexes of diphenylcarbene (DPC) that has a triplet ground state with several halogen bond donors RX were theoretically studied, and in particular, the influence of the formation of halogen bonding on the spin state of DPC was extensively explored. The spin flip depends on the difference of halogen bond energies between triplet and singlet, that is, when the difference is large enough a spin flip may occur. Furthermore, the variations of the geometries on complexation may induce the potential energy surfaces of different spin states to intersect, thus leading to intersystem crossing. Based on the energy analysis of the minimum energy crossing points (MECPs), the systems with a smaller MECP‐triplet energy barrier go through intersystem crossing more easily. Halogen bonds in the complexes, where a spin flip takes place, exhibit a partially covalent character, while other complexes show conventional behaviors of halogen bonding. According to charge decomposition analysis, the charge transfer from HOMO (DPC) to LUMO (RX) is identified as a prominent stabilizing interaction in the whole complexes.  相似文献

Charge-shift bonds (CSBs) constitute a new class of bonds different than covalent/polar-covalent and ionic bonds. Bonding in CSBs does not arise from either the covalent or the ionic structures of the bond, but rather from the resonance interaction between the structures. This Essay describes the reasons why the CSB family was overlooked by valence-bond pioneers and then demonstrates that the unique status of CSBs is not theory-dependent. Thus, valence bond (VB), molecular orbital (MO), and energy decomposition analysis (EDA), as well as a variety of electron density theories all show the distinction of CSBs vis-à-vis covalent and ionic bonds. Furthermore, the covalent–ionic resonance energy can be quantified from experiment, and hence has the same essential status as resonance energies of organic molecules, e.g., benzene. The Essay ends by arguing that CSBs are a distinct family of bonding, with a potential to bring about a Renaissance in the mental map of the chemical bond, and to contribute to productive chemical diversity.  相似文献

The various sorts of complexes in which HArF and AuX (X = F, Cl, Br, I) can engage are probed by MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations. The most weakly bound are those containing a halogen bond (XB) of the AuX⋯FArH sort, with binding energies less than 8 kcal/mol. H-bonded dimers FArH⋯XAu are a little stronger, held together by some 12 kcal/mol. Being the most strongly bound places the F atom of HArF roughly midway between Ar and Au in an F-shaped structure, bound by some 43–54 kcal/mol. The last sort of product involves atomic rearrangements wherein the H atom migrates from Ar to Au, followed by formation of a covalent Ar–Au bond. The resulting molecular unit is stabilized by 30–40 kcal/mol relative to the original HArF and AuX reactants. The H-bonded dimers are held together by an unusually large polarization component, surpassing electrostatic attraction, while dispersion predominates for the halogen bonds. Perturbations of the geometries and stretching frequencies offer a ready means of distinguishing the different types of complexes by spectroscopic techniques.  相似文献

The equilibrium geometries and first bond dissociation energies of the homoleptic complexes M(EMe)4 and M(CO)4 with M = Ni, Pd, Pt and E = B, Al, Ga, In, Tl have been calculated at the gradient corrected DFT level using the BP86 functionals. The electronic structure of the metal‐ligand bonds has been examined with the topologial analysis of the electron density distribution. The nature of the bonding is revealed by partitioning the metal‐ligand interaction energies into contributions by electrostatic attraction, covalent bonding and Pauli repulsion. The calculated data show that the M‐CO and M‐EMe bonding is very similar. However, the M‐EMe bonds of the lighter elements E are much stronger than the M‐CO bonds. The bond energies of the latter are as low or even lower than the M‐TlMe bonds. The main reason why Pd(CO)4 and Pt(CO)4 are unstable at room temperature in a condensed phase can be traced back to the already rather weak bond energy of the Ni‐CO bond. The Pd‐L bond energies of the complexes with L = CO and L = EMe are always 10 — 20 kcal/mol lower than the Ni‐L bond energies. The calculated bond energy of Ni(CO)4 is only Do = 27 kcal/mol. Thus, the bond energy of Pd(CO)4 is only Do = 12 kcal/mol. The first bond dissociation energy of Pt(CO)4 is low because the relaxation energy of the Pt(CO)3 fragment is rather high. The low bond energies of the M‐CO bonds are mainly caused by the relatively weak electrostatic attraction and by the comparatively large Pauli repulsion. The σ and π contributions to the covalent M‐CO interactions have about the same strength. The π bonding in the M‐EMe bonds is less than in the M‐CO bonds but it remains an important part of the bond energy. The trends of the electrostatic and covalent contributions to the bond energies and the σ and π bonding in the metal‐ligand bonds are discussed.  相似文献

The competition between hydrogen‐ and halogen‐bonding interactions in complexes of 5‐halogenated 1‐methyluracil (XmU; X = F, Cl, Br, I, or At) with one or two water molecules in the binding region between C5‐X and C4?O4 is investigated with M06‐2X/6‐31+G(d). In the singly‐hydrated systems, the water molecule forms a hydrogen bond with C4?O4 for all halogens, whereas structures with a halogen bond between the water oxygen and C5‐X exist only for X = Br, I, and At. Structures with two waters forming a bridge between C4?O and C5‐X (through hydrogen‐ and halogen‐bonding interactions) exist for all halogens except F. The absence of a halogen‐bonded structure in singly‐hydrated ClmU is therefore attributed to the competing hydrogen‐bonding interaction with C4?O4. The halogen‐bond angle in the doubly‐hydrated structures (150–160°) is far from the expected linearity of halogen bonds, indicating that significantly non‐linear halogen bonds may exist in complex environments with competing interactions. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Correlated ab initio calculations are used to analyze the interaction between nitrosyl hydride (HNO) and CH3X (X = F, Cl, Br). Three minima are located on the potential energy surface of each complex. The more strongly bound contains a NH...X bond, along with CH...O; CH...O and CH...N bonds occur in the less stable minimum. Binding energies of the global minimum lie in the range of 11-13 kJ/mol, and there is little sensitivity to the identity of the halogen atom. Unlike most other such hydrogen bonds, the NH covalent bond in this set of complexes becomes shorter, and its stretching frequency shifts to the blue, upon forming the NH...X hydrogen bond. The amount of this blue shift varies in the order F > Cl > Br.  相似文献

A set of four reactions, XCH3+X? (X=F, Cl, Br) and ClSiH3+Cl?, is investigated by means of the joint use of the electron localization function (ELF) and catastrophe theory (CT) analysis in order to obtain new insights into the bond breaking/forming processes for identity SN2 gas-phase reactions. Using DFT calculations at the OLYP/6-311++G(d,p) level, the effect of nucleophile (F, Cl, and Br anions) and the role of reacting centers (C or Si) on the reaction mechanisms are investigated. The charge-shift character of carbon–halogen bonds is studied by determination of the weights of the Lewis resonance structures. In all SN2 reactions at the carbon atom, there is a progressive reduction on the covalent character of the C–X bond from the reactant complex (0.41, 0.57, 0.58 for F, Cl, and Br, respectively) until the bond-breaking process, occurring before the transition structure is reached. On the other hand, the Si–Cl bond maintains its degree of covalent character (0.51) from the isolated fragments to the formation of a stable transition complex, presenting two silicon–chlorine charge-shifted bonds. The analysis of the ELF topology along the reaction path reveals that all reactions proceed via the same turning points of fold-type but the order is inverted for reactions taking place at C or Si atoms.  相似文献

Qualitative valence bond formulations by Hiberty and co-workers (Hiberty, P. C.; Megret, C.; Song, L.; Wu, W.; Shaik, S. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2006, 128, 2836) of mechanisms for the radical exchange reactions H*+F:H-->H:F+H* and F*+H:F-->F:H+F* are compared to a previously published formulation of the generalized radical exchange reaction X*+R:Y-->X:R+Y*. The former formulation uses covalent-ionic VB complexes, and the latter formulation, which is more general, involves the formation of reactant-like and product-like complexes at intermediate stages along the reaction coordinate.  相似文献

The structures, binding energies, and electronic properties for Al7X, Al7X-, Al13X-, Al13X2-, and Al13X12- (X = F, Cl, Br) were studied at the B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,p) level. Among the systems studied, Al7 and Al13 clusters in Al7X and Al13X- reveal alkali-like and halogen-like superatom characters, respectively. Al7 can bind with one halogen atom to form a salt-like compound as Al7+delta-X-delta. Al13- can combine with one halogen atom to form a diatomic halogen anion Al13X-. However, when adding more halogens, the superatom structure would be destroyed, resulting in low-symmetry compounds with the center Al atom moving toward the cluster surface. The structures of Al13X1,2,12- (X = F, Cl, Br) are similar to those of X = I; however, their binding energies and electron structures are much different. In addition, the analyses of the calculated NBO charges show that Cl and Br have similar properties, but much different from F, when interacting with the Al clusters. The Al-Cl and Al-Br bonds have more covalent character in Al7X and Al13X2,12-, in contrast to the corresponding Al-F bond, which has prominent ionic character.  相似文献

Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, dipole moments, dissociation energies, electron affinities, and ionization potentials of MX (XM = Y-Cd, X = F, Cl, Br, I) molecules in neutral, positively, and negatively charged ions were studied by density functional method, B3LYP. The bonding patterns were analyzed and compared with both the available data and across the series. It was found that besides ionic component, covalent bonds are formed between the 4d transition metal s, d orbitals, and the p orbital of halogen. For both neutral and charged molecules, the fluorides have the shortest bond distance, iodides the longest. Although the opposite situation is observed for vibrational frequency, that is, fluorides have the largest value, iodides the smallest. For neutral and anionic species, the dissociation energy tends to decrease with the increasing atomic number from Y to Cd, suggesting the decreasing or weakening of the bond strength. For cationic species, the trend is observed from Y to Ag.  相似文献
