Positivity and stability of the essential spectrum for singular transport semigroups with non-vacuum boundary conditions

In this paper we prove some compactness results for a large class of singular transport equations. Our approach relies on some comparison results for positive operators. Our results extend and complete several earlier works. We also provide simpler proofs for several known results in the literature.     

Rough oscillatory singular integral operators of nonconvolution type

In this paper, we study a classes of oscillatory singular integral operators of nonconvolution type with phases more general than polynomials. We prove that such operators are bounded on Lp provided their kernels satisfy a very weak condition. In addition, we also study the related truncated oscillatory singular integral operators. Moreover, we present a class of unbounded oscillatory singular integral operators.     

The generalized nonlinear initial-boundary Riemann problem for linearly degenerate quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws

This work is a continuation of our previous work, in the present paper we study the generalized nonlinear initial-boundary Riemann problem with small BV data for linearly degenerate quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with nonlinear boundary conditions in a half space . We prove the global existence and uniqueness of piecewise C¹ solution containing only contact discontinuities to a class of the generalized nonlinear initial-boundary Riemann problem, which can be regarded as a small BV perturbation of the corresponding nonlinear initial-boundary Riemann problem, for general n×n linearly degenerate quasilinear hyperbolic system of conservation laws; moreover, this solution has a global structure similar to the one of the self-similar solution to the corresponding nonlinear initial-boundary Riemann problem. Some applications to quasilinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws arising in the string theory and high energy physics are also given.     

Characterizations of linear Volterra integral equations with nonnegative kernels

We first introduce the notion of positive linear Volterra integral equations. Then, we offer a criterion for positive equations in terms of the resolvent. In particular, equations with nonnegative kernels are positive. Next, we obtain a variant of the Paley-Wiener theorem for equations of this class and its extension to perturbed equations. Furthermore, we get a Perron-Frobenius type theorem for linear Volterra integral equations with nonnegative kernels. Finally, we give a criterion for positivity of the initial function semigroup of linear Volterra integral equations and provide a necessary and sufficient condition for exponential stability of the semigroups.     

Compatible maps and invariant approximations

The existence of invariant best approximations for compatible maps is proved. Our results unify, and generalize various known results to a more general class of noncommuting mappings.

Extensions of operator algebras I

We transcribe a portion of the theory of extensions of C^∗-algebras to general operator algebras. We also include several new general facts about approximately unital ideals in operator algebras and the C^∗-algebras which they generate.     

Periodic solutions for a class of superquadratic Hamiltonian systems

We prove the existence of nontrivial critical points for a class of superquadratic nonautonomous second-order Hamiltonian systems by applying condition ^∗(C) to critical point theory, and some new solvability conditions of nontrivial periodic solutions are obtained.     

On the robustness of two-stage estimators

The aim of this note is to provide a general framework for the analysis of the robustness properties of a broad class of two-stage models. We derive the influence function, the change-of-variance function, and the asymptotic variance of a general two-stage M-estimator, and provide their interpretations. We illustrate our results in the case of the two-stage maximum likelihood estimator and the two-stage least squares estimator.

Numerical index of absolute sums of Banach spaces

We study the numerical index of absolute sums of Banach spaces, giving general conditions which imply that the numerical index of the sum is less or equal than the infimum of the numerical indices of the summands and we provide some examples where the equality holds covering the already known case of c₀-, ?₁- and ?_∞-sums and giving as a new result the case of E-sums where E has the RNP and n(E)=1 (in particular for finite-dimensional E with n(E)=1). We also show that the numerical index of a Banach space Z which contains a dense union of increasing one-complemented subspaces is greater or equal than the limit superior of the numerical indices of those subspaces. Using these results, we give a detailed short proof of the already known fact that, for a fixed p, the numerical indices of all infinite-dimensional Lp(μ)-spaces coincide.     

Hardy spaces for the strip

In this paper we shall study Hardy spaces of analytic functions in a strip S. Our main result is on one hand an intrinsic characterization of the spaces and on the second that polynomials are dense. We also present an orthogonal (in H²(S)) basis of polynomials.     

Property (w) and perturbations II

This note is a continuation of a previous article [P. Aiena, M.T. Biondi, Property (w) and perturbations, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 336 (2007) 683-692] concerning the stability of property (w), a variant of Weyl's theorem, for a bounded operator T acting on a Banach space, under finite-dimensional perturbations K commuting with T. A counterexample shows that property (w) in general is not preserved under finite-dimensional perturbations commuting with T, also under the assumption that T is a-isoloid.     

A counterexample to Wood's conjecture

We prove that if the one-point compactification of a locally compact, noncompact Hausdorff space L is the topological space called pseudoarc, then C₀(L,C) is almost transitive. We also obtain two necessary conditions on a metrizable locally compact Hausdorff space L for C₀(L) being almost transitive.     

On a new class of Finsler metrics

In this paper, the geometric meaning of (α,β)-norms is made clear. On this basis, a new class of Finsler metrics called general (α,β)-metrics are introduced, which are defined by a Riemannian metric and a 1-form. These metrics not only generalize (α,β)-metrics naturally, but also include some metrics structured by R. Bryant. The spray coefficients formula of some kinds of general (α,β)-metrics is given and the projective flatness is also discussed.     

Growth conditions, compact perturbations and operator subdecomposability, with applications to generalized Cesàro operators

We adapt recent results of Albrecht and Ricker to obtain conditions under which growth constraints on the left resolvent of a Banach space operator are preserved under suitable perturbations. As an application, we establish Bishop's property (β) for certain generalized Cesàro operators on the classical Hardy spaces Hp, 1<p<∞. Our methods also apply to unilateral weighted shifts whose weight sequence converges sufficiently rapidly as well as to perturbations of restrictions of a class of generalized scalar operators.     

On binormality in non-separable Banach spaces

We study binormality, a separation property of the norm and weak topologies of a Banach space. We show that every Banach space which belongs to a P-class is binormal. We also show that the asplundness of a Banach space is equivalent to a related separation property of its dual space.     

On the approximation of spectra of linear operators on Hilbert spaces

We present several new techniques for approximating spectra of linear operators (not necessarily bounded) on an infinite-dimensional, separable Hilbert space. Our approach is to take well-known techniques from finite-dimensional matrix analysis and show how they can be generalized to an infinite-dimensional setting to provide approximations of spectra of elements in a large class of operators. We conclude by proposing a solution to the general problem of approximating the spectrum of an arbitrary bounded operator by introducing the n-pseudospectrum and argue how that can be used as an approximation to the spectrum.     

The spatial product of Arveson systems is intrinsic

We prove that the spatial product of two spatial Arveson systems is independent of the choice of the reference units. This also answers the same question for the minimal dilation of the Powers sum of two spatial CP-semigroups: It is independent up to cocycle conjugacy.
