Measurement of the two-loop lamb shift in lithiumlike U89+

Using the SuperEBIT electron beam ion trap, we have measured the 2s(1/2)-2p(1/2) transitions in U88+ and U89+. The measured value of 280.645 +/- 0.015 eV for Li-like U89+ improves the available precision by nearly an order of magnitude and establishes a new benchmark for testing the total QED contribution to the transition energy within a fractional accuracy of 3.6 x 10(-4). We infer a value for the 2s two-loop Lamb shift in U89+ of -0.23 eV, from which we estimate a value of -1.27 eV for the 1s two-loop Lamb shift in U91+.     

Precise determination of the 2s(1/2)-2p(1/2) splitting in very heavy lithiumlike ions utilizing dielectronic recombination

The 2s(1/2)-2p(1/2) energy splittings DeltaE(L) of the lithiumlike ions 19779Au76+, 20882Pb79+, and 23892U89+ have been measured at the Experimental Storage Ring, utilizing low energy dielectronic recombination. The resonance energies in total 41 different 1s(2) 2p(1/2)nl(j(')) (n > or =20) autoionizing Rydberg states populated in the dielectronic capture process have been determined. The 2s(1/2)-->2p(1/2) excitation energies have been obtained by extrapolation of these resonance energies to the associated series limits n--> infinity. The combined analysis of the experimental data for all three ions yields DeltaE(L)=216.134(96) eV for Au76+, 230.650(81) eV for Pb79+, and 280.516(99) eV for U89+.

Measurement of the Lamb shift 42S1/2-42P1/2 of the helium ion

Helium ions were produced in then=4 states by electron collisions with ground state atoms, resulting in simultaneous ionization and excitation. Dipole transitions between the Zeeman levels of the states 4² S _1/2 and 4² P _1/2 were induced by a microwave electric field. The intensity of the emitted Fowlerα line 4686 Å, corresponding to transitions from then=4 to then=3 states was then reduced by about 3%. From the measurements, a value of the Lamb shiftδ=1751±25 MHz was obtained, compared with the theoretical valueδ=1768.23±0.55 MHz, and the results ofLea, Leventhal andLamb ofδ=1765±20 MHz.     

Theoretical lifetimes and fluorescence yields for 1s2p 3P levels

Theoretical lifetimes and fluorescence yields for the 1s2p ³P levels are presented for selected atomic numbers up to Z=50.

Improved measurement of the 1s2s 1S0-1s2p 3P1 interval in heliumlike silicon

Using colinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy with copropagating and counter-propagating beams we have measured the 1s2s 1S0-1s2p 3P1 intercombination interval in 28Si12+ with the result 7230.585(6) cm{-1}. The experiment made use of a dual-wavelength, high-finesse, power build-up cavity excited by single-frequency lasers at 1319 and 1450 nm. The result will provide a precision test of ab initio relativistic many-body atomic theory at moderate Z.     

QED and hyperfine splitting in the 2s1/2−2p3/2 X-ray transition in lithium-like Bi80+

The measurement of the Bi⁸⁰⁺ 2s_1/2−2p_3/2 transition energy is discussed. The measurement resolved the hyperfine splitting of the (1s²2s) F=4,5 ground configuration and allowed a determination of the Lamb shift contributions with a precision of about 9 × 10^-4 providing the most accurate test of QED in a high-Z ion to date. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Isotope shift and hyperfine structure of the transition5d6s 2 2 D 3/2-5d6s6p 4 F 3/2 of Lu175 and Lu176

Using a tunable single mode dye laser the isotope shift of the 573.7 nm-line between the isotopes Lu¹⁷⁵ and Lu¹⁷⁶ has been determined to be IS(176?175, 573.7 nm)=?394(5) MHz yielding a change of mean square nuclear radii ofδ〈r ²〉=0.022(5) fm². In addition from our measurements the following values of the hyperfine splitting constantsA andB could be deduced Lu¹⁷⁶ 5d6s6p ⁴ F _3/2:A=?651.4(0.3) MHz,B=2,494(4) MHz 5d6s ^{2 2} D _3/2:A=138.0(0.3) MHz,B=2,131(3) MHz Lu¹⁷⁵ 5d6s6p ⁴ F _3/2:A=?924.7(0.5) MHz,B=1,767(4) MHz.     

Fine structure and isotope shift of the 3s4d 3 D-3s3p 3 P, 3s5d 3 D-3s3p 3 P and 3p 2 3 P-3s3p 3 P Transitions of MgI

Summary We report the measurements of the³ D(3s4d)-³ P(3s3p)³ D(3s5d)-³ P(3s3p), and³ P(3p ²)-³ P(3s3p) transition frequency of MgI, the fine-structure separation and isotope shift between²⁴Mg and²⁶Mg. The measurements have been performed in a metastable atomic beam; a good agreement is found for data already existing in the literature. The accuracy of the measurements reported in this paper is mainly limited by the Doppler broadening of theI ₂ transitions used as a reference and by the precision in the knowledge of the related wavelengths.

Hyperfine structure of the 8p 2 P 3/2 and 8p 2 P 1/2 levels of115In

The hyperfine structure of the 8p ² P _3/2 and² P _1/2 levels of¹¹⁵In was measured using high-resolution laser spectroscopy on a collimated indium atomic beam. Step-wise excitations from the metastable 5² P _3/2 state via the shortlived 6s ² S _1/2 state were employed. For the magnetic-dipole and electric-quadrupole interaction constantsa andb, respectively, the following results were obtained:a(8p ² P _3/2)=16.3 (3) MHz,b(8p ² P _3/2)=11 (3) MHz anda(8p ² P _1/2)=44.0 (5) MHz. The magnetic hyperfine structure is shown to be strongly influenced by core polarization. For the electric-quadrupole moment of¹¹⁵In the valueQ=0.79 (20) barn is deduced.     

Amplified spontaneous emission on the J = 2 → 1, 3p-3s transition of neonlike argon in a capillary discharge

We report the observation of amplified spontaneous emission on the J = 2 → 1, 3p-3s transition (C-line) of neonlike argon at 69.78 nm in capillaries of 6-mm bore. The simple discharge is driven by a small capacitor bank having a capacitance of 0.1 μF. Gain coefficients between G = 0.17 cm⁻¹ and G = 0.25 cm⁻¹ are derived.
