The thermal properties of a homologous series of 4-alkoxy-phenyl 4-(4-trifluoromethylbenzoyloxy)benzoates were examined. The homologues show remarkable smectic properties involving a smectic A and a higher order smectic phase characterized by microscopic and X-ray experiments, indicating that the molecules have a partially bilayer arrangement in both smectic phases. Based on these results, molecular arrangements of the two smectic phases are proposed. The effects of the trifluoromethyl group on the thermal properties of the smectic and crystalline phases are discussed in terms of the fluorophilic interaction around the boundary of the smectic layer.  相似文献

The mesomorphic properties of the N*, S*c and higher ordered smectic phases have been investigated for a homologous series of 4-[(S)-2-chlor-3-methylbutanoyloxy]-4'-(4-n-alkyloxy-benzoyloxy)biphenyls. They have been characterized by optical texture observation, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small angle X-ray scattering and electro-optic measurements. The compounds exhibit a strongly twisted cholesteric phase and smectic phases with large spontaneous polarization and tilt angle values. One or two higher ordered, monotropic smectic phases were found which significantly differ in their rotational viscosity.  相似文献

The phase behaviours of mixed liquid crystal systems having either Sm/N or Sm/Ch properties have been studied. The (smectic/nematic) binary system formed smectic phases over a wide and much enhanced range of temperature (42 C) and a broad concentration range (0-90 wt %). The ternary smectic/cholesteric system, in appropriate concentration ranges, exhibited the smectic A phase, a TGBA-like twist grain boundary A phase, the cholesteric phase and blue phases. The TGBA-like phase appeared in the cholesteric-smectic phase transition range. Three textures (chiral pitch, fan-shaped and scale-like) for the cholesteric phase of the ternary smectic/cholesteric mixtures were observed in the ranges 0-7, 7-43 and 43 wt % respectively, of cholesteric CB15, in a binary Sm/N mixture.  相似文献

Abstract

Seven new derivatives of 4-octyloxy-N-(4-substituted benzylidene) aniline have been synthesized. 4-Trifluoromethyl and 4-trifluoromethoxy derivatives exhibit stable smectic B and A phases, respectively, while both the 4-methyl and 4-methoxy derivatives have monotropic nematic phases. Fundamental liquid crystalline properties such as entropies of the phase transitions, microscopic textures, smectic layer spacings, orientational order parameters, and molecular dipole moments were determined. It has been revealed that moderately polar nature of these mesogens act to stabilizing monolayer smectic states. The smectic A phase of 4-trifluoromethoxy derivative exhibit very high orientational order. None of the disubstituted compounds, 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl), 3,5-dimethyl, and 3,5-dimethoxy derivatives were mesogenic. The effect of terminal trifluoromethylation on the liquid crystalline properties is discussed.  相似文献

The relationship between the physical properties and the molecular structure of a number of smectic C compounds has been investigated. Special emphasis was placed on the study of a new class of laterally substituted smectic C compounds incorporating a trans-1,4-disubstituted cyclohexane ring. We have investigated the influence of new chical dopants on the ferrolectric and physical properties of smectic C mixtures. New chiral smectic C liquid crystal mixtures have been developed. Due to the low response times, low birefringence and excellent chemical and U.V. stability, these mixtures are particularly well suited for electro-optic device applications.  相似文献

4-Octyloxy-4-(12-pentyl-1,12-dicarbadodecaboran-1-yl)biphenyl ( 1BC ) has been synthesized along with three hydrocarbon analogues in which the 1,12-dicarbadodecaborane is replaced by a phenyl ( 1PH ), trans -cyclohexyl ( 1CH ) or bicyclo\[2.2.2]octyl ( 1BO ) ring. The mesogenic properties of these materials have been compared and contrasted in both their pure states and as binary mixtures. The binary phase diagrams for the liquid crystal 1BC , with its hydrocarbon analogues 1CH and 1BO exhibit excellent miscibility of the smectic A phase while the more highly ordered smectic phases (SmB and SmE) for the hydrocarbons are suppressed by 1BC . In contrast the binary mixture of 1BC with the terphenyl analog ( 1PH ) exhibits complex behaviour in which the thermal stability of the smectic E phase is enhanced. X-ray diffraction data for the 1PH - 1BC binary mixture suggest a strong in-plane molecular ordering which might be attributed to intermolecular associations stabilizing the smectic E phase in preference to other smectic modifications.  相似文献

Three acrylate side-chain polymers in which the mesogenic moieties are based on the 4-n-alkoxyphenyl-4'-(4'-methylhexyloxy) benzoates have been characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. For shorter flexible spacers (n = 2) both smectic A and C* phases are observed thus making this polymer interesting for the fabrication of electro-optical devices based on ferroelectric properties (a smectic A phase is required for alignment purposes). For longer flexible spacers, (n = 6, 11) only the smectic A phase remains.  相似文献

A homologous series of azomethine esters,4-n-alkanoyloxybenzylidene-4’-bromoanilines possessing even number of carbon atoms at the terminal alkanoyloxy chain(Cn-1H2n-1COO- n = 8,10,12,14,16,18) was synthesized and characterized.Whilst n-octanoyloxy to n-dodecanoyloxy derivatives exhibited enantiotropic smectic A and smectic B phases,n-tetradecanoyloxy to n-octadecanoyloxy derivatives possessed enantiotropic smectic A and monotropic smectic B properties.n-Decanoyloxy derivatives demonstrated the optimum exhibition for both smectic A and smectic B phases. It was found that the length of terminal alkanoyloxy chain has an influence on mesomorphic properties.  相似文献

We present an experimental technique for the inflation of freely suspended films of thermotropic smectic liquid crystals to macroscopic bubbles. These bubbles have many properties in common with well known lyotropic soap bubbles, but on the other hand represent a completely different class of material with different physical properties and new phenomena. We describe the generation of such smectic bubbles and compare their physical properties with those of lyotropic soap bubbles. The measurement of inner pressure versus curvature is used for the determination of surface tensions of the smectic materials.  相似文献

Mesogenic butadiene-tricarbonyliron complexes 6 and 7 have been obtained in optically active forms and they exhibit columnar, cholesteric, smectic A and smectic C properties. Both smectic mesophases can potentially be used in switchable bistable electro-optic devices and all the mesogenic enantiomers can act as dopants by inducing ferroelectric properties when dissolved in a non-chiral smectic A or C phase.  相似文献

The electrical properties of ionic smectic liquid crystal (ISLCs), specifically, (i) oriented and non-oriented samples of lyotropic ISLC potassium caproate and (ii) oriented samples of thermotropic ISLC cobalt decanoate, are investigated in detail. The electrical conductivity of lyotropic smectic potassium caproate is higher than that of isotropic electrolytes. A giant anisotropy in the electrical conductivity of oriented samples of thermotropic ISLC cobalt decanoate is observed. The mobility of charge carriers in lyotropic ISLC is measured for the first time. The unusual electrical properties of ISLCs, which are governed by their layered structure, show that they have application potential in optoelectronic devices.  相似文献

The observed macroscopic anisotropic properties such as the components of infrared (IR) absorbances of liquid crystals are expressed in terms of the order parameters of the long molecular axis, molecular, and phase biaxiality. The order parameters of the organo-siloxane tetrapode liquid crystal of zero dendritic order (G0) in its nematic and smectic phases have been determined using results of the polarized IR spectroscopic measurements on a planar homogenously and hometropic aligned cells. The spatial components of the absorbances for the vibrational bands (in the mesogenic unit, terminal chains, and spacer) have been measured and analyzed. For the laboratory reference system, the apparent orientational order parameter S of the mesogen unit shows a significant drop in the transition from the nematic to the smectic phase while the phase biaxiality order parameter P increases to almost 0.4 in the smectic phase. This result shows that the director is tilted out of the sample plane in the smectic phase. The molecular biaxiality parameter D is found to be positive both for the nematic and smectic phases. This suggests that the carbonyl dipoles are oriented close to the tilt plane. For the vibrational bands in the chains, low values of S and D indicative of their low orientational order are obtained. As a result of the interaction among the molecules in the tilted smectic phases, the transition dipoles show positive correlations for the transversal and negative for the longitudinal dipoles.  相似文献

The smectic properties of four series of dimer liquid crystals containing cholesteryl and biphenylyl groups were investigated by polarization microscopy, DSC and X-ray diffraction. Compounds that contain the strongly dipolar cyanobiphenylyl group exhibit a smectic layer spacing that is about 1.7 times the length of the molecule. Three series of alkoxybiphenylylcontaining dimers exhibit two other smectic modifications. For short spacers, a smectic layer spacing is observed that is about the same length as the molecule and for long spacers the smectic layer spacing is about half the length of the molecule. In the latter cases the entropy change at the SmA-N* transition is clearly larger than for the compounds with the other smectic modifications. One or two compounds in each alkoxybiphenylyl-containing series, that have similar spacer length and terminal group length and have an odd number of flexible units in the spacer, exhibit only a chiral nematic phase, and no smectic phase.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of a homologous series of N-(2-hydroxy-4-n-alkoxybenzylidene)-4'-n-decylphenylanilines and their platinum(II) and oxovanadium(IV) complexes are reported. All the ligands and their metal chelates exhibit enantiotropic mesophases, predominantly smectic A and smectic C phases. The transition temperatures and enthalpies have been determined for most of the compounds. The platinum(II) complexes have higher melting points and mesophase thermal stabilities. However, the oxovanadium(IV) complexes have a wider thermal range for the mesophase. Both platinum(II) and oxovanadium(IV) complexes containing only a chain on the biphenyl moiety exhibit a nematic phase.  相似文献

Liquid-crystalline compounds containing germanium atoms were synthesised and assessed for liquid-crystalline properties. These new compounds generally possess smectic C phases, and many also possess nematic, smectic A and higher order smectic phases. The germanium-containing liquid crystals were incorporated into smectic C mixtures. These mixtures tend to exhibit little change in smectic C*?layer thickness over temperature. This characteristic is associated with de Vries smectic A materials, but measurements show that, although they have high smectic C stability, the materials' smectic cone angles are small. Measurement of smectic cone angle versus temperature of an exemplar material and its analogues containing carbon and silicon in place of the germanium, all show small cone angles which fall smoothly and extrapolate to zero as the smectic C*?to smectic A transition is approached. These measurements largely explain the observed small layer changes and establish that the materials are not first-order de Vries materials. They must be located elsewhere along the de Vries-orthogonal continuum of smectic A phases.  相似文献

Reentrant phenomena in soft matter and biosystems have attracted considerable attention because their properties are closely related to high functionality. Here, we report a combined experimental and computational study on the self-assembly and reentrant behavior of a single-component thermotropic smectic liquid crystal toward the realization of dynamically functional materials. We have designed and synthesized a mesogenic molecule consisting of an alicyclic trans,trans-bicyclohexyl mesogen and a polar cyclic carbonate group connected by a flexible tetra(oxyethylene) spacer. The molecule exhibits an unprecedented sequence of layered smectic phases, in the order: smectic A-smectic B-reentrant smectic A. Electron density profiles and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations indicate that competition between the stacking of bicyclohexyl mesogens and the conformational flexibility of tetra(oxyethylene) chains induces this unusual reentrant behavior. Ion-conductive reentrant liquid-crystalline materials have been developed, which undergo the multistep conductivity changes in response to temperature. The reentrant liquid crystals have potential as new mesogenic materials exhibiting switching functions.  相似文献

Abstract

Mesomorphic phase transitions of 4,4′-bis(ω-hydroxyalkoxy)-azoxybenzenes (number of carbons in the alkoxy group n = 2,3,6,8,11 and 12) have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy. For the n = 8 compound, an optically isotropic (01) mesophase reminiscent of the smectic D phase was observed in the temperature range of 4 0 M 1 1 K between smectic C (below 400 K) and nematic (above 41 1 K) phases. On the other hand, the 0 1 mesophase was not observed in the other homologues used here; the n = 2,3 and 6 compounds had only a nematic phase and the n= 11 and 12 compounds had only a smectic C phase. This preliminary work points out that the thermal and optical properties of the 01 phase for the n = 8 compound are very similar to those of the smectic D phase.  相似文献
