Let G be a connected, complex, semi-simple Lie group Let g be an element in G. Let B be a Borel subgroup of G and g in B. Let m and n be the least positive integers such that the element gm lies on a one-parameter subgroup in G and the element gn lies on a one-parameter subgroup in B. We call an element of a finite general linear group GL(d, q) fat if it leaves invariant and acts irreducibly on a subspace of dimension greater than d/2. Fatness of an element can be decided efficiently in practice by testing whether its characteristic polynomial has an irreducible factor of degree greater than d/2. We show that for groups G with SL(d, q) ≤ G ≤ GL(d, q) most pairs of fat elements from G generate irreducible subgroups, namely we prove that the proportion of pairs of fat elements generating a reducible subgroup, in the set of all pairs in G × G, is less than q d+1. We also prove that the conditional probability to obtain a pair (g 1, g 2) in G × G which generates a reducible subgroup, given that g 1, g 2 are fat elements, is less than 2q d+1. Further, we show that any reducible subgroup generated by a pair of fat elements acts irreducibly on a subspace of dimension greater than d/2, and in the induced action the generating pair corresponds to a pair of fat elements.  相似文献

Let Diffeo = Diffeo(ℝ) denote the group of infinitely differentiable diffeomorphisms of the real line ℝ, under the operation of composition, and let Diffeo+ be the subgroup of diffeomorphisms of degree +1, i.e., orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms. We show how to reduce the problem of determining whether or not two given elements f, g ∈ Diffeo are conjugate in Diffeo to associated conjugacy problems in the subgroup Diffeo+. The main result concerns the case when f and g have degree −1, and specifies (in an explicit and verifiable way) precisely what must be added to the assumption that their (compositional) squares are conjugate in Diffeo+, in order to ensure that f is conjugated to g by an element of Diffeo+. The methods involve formal power series and results of Kopell on centralisers in the diffeomorphism group of a half-open interval. Bibliography: 4 titles. Optimally Cutting a Surface into a Disk   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We consider the problem of cutting a subset of the edges of a polyhedral manifold surface, possibly with boundary, to obtain a single topological disk, minimizing either the total number of cut edges or their total length. We show that this problem is NP-hard in general, even for manifolds without boundary and for punctured spheres. We also describe an algorithm with running time n O(g+k), where n is the combinatorial complexity, g is the genus, and k is the number of boundary components of the input surface. Finally, we describe a greedy algorithm that outputs a O(log2 g)-approximation of the minimum cut graph in O(g 2 n log n) time.  相似文献

Let X = Ω/Γ be a smooth quotient of a bounded symmetric domain Ω by an arithmetic subgroup . We prove the following generalization of Nadel's result: for any non-negative integer g, there exists a finite étale cover Xg = Ω/Γ(g) of X determined by a subgroup depending only on g, such that for any compact Riemann surface R of genus g and any non-constant holomorphic map f : R → Xg* from R into the Satake-Baily-Borel compactification Xg* of Xg, the image f(R) lies in the boundary ∂Xg: = X*g\Xg. Nadel proved it for g = 0 or 1. Moreover, for any positive integer n and any non-negative integer g≥0, we show that there exists a positive number a(n,g) depending only on n and g with the following property: a principally polarized non-isotrivial n-dimensional abelian variety over a complex function field of genus g does not have a level-N structure for Na(n,g). This was proved by Nadel for g = 0 or 1, and by Noguchi for arbitrary g under the additional hypothesis that the abelian variety has non-empty singular fibers.  相似文献

It is well known that the degree‐raised Bernstein–Bézier coefficients of degree n of a polynomial g converge to g at the rate 1/n. In this paper we consider the polynomial A n(g) of degree ⩼ n interpolating the coefficients. We show how A n can be viewed as an inverse to the Bernstein polynomial operator and that the derivatives A n(g)(r) converge uniformly to g(r) at the rate 1/n for all r. We also give an asymptotic expansion of Voronovskaya type for A n(g) and discuss some shape preserving properties of this polynomial.  Recall that a pure F-structure is a kind of generalized torus action. The main result asserts that if a compact positively curved manifold M n admits an invariant pure F-structure such that each orbit has positive dimension, then the fundamental group has a finite cyclic subgroup with index less than w n , a constant depending only on n. As an application, we conclude that for all 0<δ≦1, the fundamental group of a δ-pinched n-manifold either has a cyclic subgroup with index less than w n or has order less than w(n,δ), a constant depending only on n and δ. We prove explicit lower bounds for the capacity of annular domains of minimal submanifolds P m in ambient Riemannian spaces N n with sectional curvatures bounded from above. We characterize the situations in which the lower bounds for the capacity are actually attained. Furthermore we apply these bounds to prove that Brownian motion defined on a complete minimal submanifold is transient when the ambient space is a negatively curved Hadamard-Cartan manifold. The proof stems directly from the capacity bounds and also covers the case of minimal submanifolds of dimension m > 2 in Euclidean spaces.  相似文献

A subgroup MG is almost malnormal provided that for each gGM, the intersection M g M is finite. It is proven that the free product of two virtually free groups amalgamating a finitely generated almost malnormal subgroup, is residually finite. A consequence of a generalization of this result is that an acute-angled n-gon of finite groups is residually finite if n≥4. Another consequence is that if G acts properly discontinuously and cocompactly on a 2-dimensional hyperbolic building whose chambers have acute angles and at least 4 sides, then G is residually finite. Let (M n , g) be an n-dimensional complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with harmonic curvature and positive Sobolev constant. In this paper, by employing an elliptic estimation method, we show that (M n , g) is a space form if it has sufficiently small L n/2-norms of trace-free curvature tensor and nonnegative scalar curvature. Moreover, we get a gap theorem for (M n , g) with positive scalar curvature.  相似文献

Let g[n] be the minimum number of squares whose sum represents all positive definite integral quadratic forms of rank n which are represented by sums of squares. In this article, we first discuss representations of integers by unimodular lattices. We then estimate the order of magnitude of the diameter of the 2-graph of unimodular lattices of rank n. Combining these results we prove g[n]=O(3n/2n log n). We also provide a lower bound for g[n]. Let Γ g, n be the mapping class group of a compact Riemann surface of genusg withn points preserved (2−2gn<0,g≥1,n≥0). The Torelli subgroup of Γ g, n has a natural weight filtration {Γg, n(m)} m≥1. Each graded quotient gr m Γ g, n ⊗ ℚ (m≥1) is a finite dimensional vector space over ℚ on which the group Sp(2g, ℚ)×S n naturally acts. In this paper, we have determined the Sp(2g, ℚ)×S n module structure of gr m Γ g, n ⊗ ℚ for 1≤m≤3. This includes a verification of an expectation by S. Morita. Also, for generalm, we have identified a certain Sp(2g, ℚ)-irreducible component of gr m Γ g, n ⊗ ℚ by constructing explicitly elements in these modules.  相似文献

We consider Dirichlet series zg,a(s)=?n=1 g(na) e-ln s{\zeta_{g,\alpha}(s)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty g(n\alpha) e^{-\lambda_n s}} for fixed irrational α and periodic functions g. We demonstrate that for Diophantine α and smooth g, the line Re(s) = 0 is a natural boundary in the Taylor series case λ n  = n, so that the unit circle is the maximal domain of holomorphy for the almost periodic Taylor series ?n=1 g(na) zn{\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} g(n\alpha) z^n}. We prove that a Dirichlet series zg,a(s) = ?n=1 g(n a)/ns{\zeta_{g,\alpha}(s) = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} g(n \alpha)/n^s} has an abscissa of convergence σ 0 = 0 if g is odd and real analytic and α is Diophantine. We show that if g is odd and has bounded variation and α is of bounded Diophantine type r, the abscissa of convergence σ 0 satisfies σ 0 ≤ 1 − 1/r. Using a polylogarithm expansion, we prove that if g is odd and real analytic and α is Diophantine, then the Dirichlet series ζ g,α (s) has an analytic continuation to the entire complex plane.  相似文献

We show that the minimalk such that μκL 1(SU(n)) for all central, continuous measures μ on SU(n) isk=n. We do this by exhibiting an elementg∈SU(n) for which the (n−1)-fold product of its conjugacy class has zero Haar measure. It is known that if a group G has an abelian subgroup of finite index n, then it contains an abelian characteristic subgroup A of index at most nn. The aim of this paper is to improve this bound by showing that the characteristic subgroup A can be chosen of index at most n2. Examples prove that this bound is the best possible. Our main result is obtained as an application of a general method for the construction of large characteristic subgroups.  相似文献
