We prove that the 3-state Potts antiferromagnet on the diced lattice (dual of the kagome lattice) has entropically driven long-range order at low temperatures (including zero). We then present Monte Carlo simulations, using a cluster algorithm, of the 3-state and 4-state models. The 3-state model has a phase transition to the high-temperature disordered phase at v=e;{J}-1=-0.860 599+/-0.000 004 that appears to be in the universality class of the 3-state Potts ferromagnet. The 4-state model is disordered throughout the physical region, including at zero temperature.  相似文献

Using a graphical method we establish the exact equivalence of the partition function of aq-state nonintersecting string (NIS) model on an arbitrary planar, even-valenced, lattice with that of a q2-state Potts model on a related lattice. The NIS model considered in this paper is one in which the vertex weights are expressible as sums of those of basic vertex types, and the resulting Potts model generally has multispin interactions. For the square and Kagomé lattices this leads to the equivalence of a staggered NIS model with Potts models with anisotropic pair interactions, indicating that these NIS models have a first-order transition forq > 2. For the triangular lattice the NIS model turns out to be the five-vertex model of Wu and Lin and it relates to a Potts model with two- and three-site interactions. The most general model we discuss is an oriented NIS model which contains the six-vertex model and the NIS models of Stroganov and Schultz as special cases.  相似文献

On the base of exact analytical solutions for maximum eigenvalue of Kramers–Wannier transfer matrix the phenomena of frustrations appearance and suppression of phase transition or, on the contrary, the phase transition appearance and suppression of frustrations are studied on the base of exact analytical solutions for 1D Ising model, 3-state, and 4-state standard Potts models with allowance for the interactions between nearest J and next-nearest neighbors J′, for 6-state and 8-state modified Potts models with allowance for the interaction between only nearest neighbors J. In all the models investigated we obtained exact numbers and values of frustrating fields depending, in particular, on mutual orientation of the field and spin directions.  相似文献

In this paper we study the 3-state Potts model on the triangular lattice which has two- and three-site interactions. Using a Peierls argument we obtain a rigorous bound on the transition temperature, thereby disproving a conjecture on the location of its critical point. Low-temperature series are generated and analyzed for three particular choices of the coupling constants; a phase diagram is then drawn on the basis of these considerations. Our analysis indicates that the antiferromagnetic transition and the transition along the coexistence line are of first order, implying the existence of a multicritical point in the ferromagnetic region. Relation of the triangularq-state Potts model with other lattice-statistical problems is also discussed. In particular, an Ashkin-Teller model and the hard-hexagon lattice gas solved by Baxter emerge as special cases in appropriate limits.Supported in part by NSF grant No. DMR 78-18808.  相似文献

The phase transitions and critical phenomena in the three-dimensional (3D) site-diluted q-state Potts models on a simple cubic lattice are explored. We systematically study the phase transitions of the models for q=3 and q=4 on the basis of Wolff high-effective algorithm by the Monte–Carlo (MC) method. The calculations are carried out for systems with periodic boundary conditions and spin concentrations p=1.00–0.65. It is shown that introducing of weak disorder (p∼0.95) into the system is sufficient to change the first order phase transition into a second order one for the 3D 3-state Potts model, while for the 3D 4-state Potts model, such a phase transformation occurs when introducing strong disorder (p∼0.65). Results for 3D pure 3-state and 4-state Potts models (p=1.00) agree with conclusions of mean field theory. The static critical exponents of the specific heat α, susceptibility γ, magnetization β, and the exponent of the correlation radius ν are calculated for the samples on the basis of finite-size scaling theory.  相似文献

We evaluate the thermodynamic properties of the 4-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the Union-Jack lattice using tensor-based numerical methods. We present strong evidence for a previously unknown, "entropy-driven," finite-temperature phase transition to a partially ordered state. From the thermodynamics of Potts models on the diced and centered diced lattices, we propose that finite-temperature transitions and partially ordered states are ubiquitous on irregular lattices.  相似文献

Using Monte Carlo simulations the phase structure of the four-dimensional N-state gauge Potts model coupled to Higgs fields is determined. A three-phase diagram is established. In the Z(2) case, a first and a second-order transition lines are present. For Z(5) and Z(10) only first-order transition lines appear. The short-time dynamics of the three-dimensional bond-diluted 4-state Potts model is investigated with Monte Carlo simulations. A recently suggested nonequilibrium reweighting method is applied, and the tricritical point is determined with the short-time dynamic approach. Based on the dynamic scaling form, both the dynamic and static critical exponents are estimated for the second order phase transition. We study the 3d 3-state Potts model defined on a diamond lattice (with a coordination number 4). By using finite-size scaling techniques we establish the first-order nature of the phase transition. We study local observables, tunneling events and the correlation length of the system, and we clarify the details of the pseudo-critical behavior which the system undergoes close to the transition region.  相似文献

We study the nature of the smectic–isotropic phase transition using a mobile 6-state Potts model. Each Potts state represents a molecular orientation. We show that with the choice of an appropriate microscopic Hamiltonian describing the interaction between individual molecules modeled by a mobile 6-state Potts spins, we observe the smectic phase dynamically formed when we cool the molecules from the isotropic phase to low temperatures (T). In order to elucidate the order of the transition and the low-T properties, we use the high-performance Wang–Landau flat energy-histogram technique. We show that the smectic phase goes to the liquid (isotropic) phase by melting/evaporating layer by layer starting from the film surface with increasing T. At a higher T, the whole remaining layers become orientationally disordered. The melting of each layer is characterized by a peak of the specific heat. Such a succession of partial transitions cannot be seen by the Metropolis algorithm. The successive layer meltings/evaporations at low T are found to have a first-order character by examining the energy histogram. These results are in agreement with experiments performed on some smectic liquid crystals.  相似文献

On the basis of a histogram data analysis, phase transitions (PTs) in a three-dimensional diluted ferromagnetic 3- and 4-state Potts models are investigated. Systems with linear dimensions of L = 20–60 and spin concentrations of p = 1.00, 0.95, and 0.65 are studied. It is shown that the introduction of weak disorder (p ~ 0.95) into the system in the three-dimensional Potts model with q = 3 is sufficient to change a first-order phase transition to a second-order one, whereas, in the three-dimensional Potts model with q = 4, the change of a first-order phase transition to a second-order one occurs only in the presence of strong disorder (p ~ 0.65).  相似文献

The first order phase transitions in the two-dimensional 10-state Potts model and in the two-dimensional Ising model with magnetic field are studied with Monte Carlo renormalization group methods. The deconfining phase transition of the four-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory is treated similarly. The results are not consistent with the standard discontinuity fixed point picture of first order phase transitions. In the U(1) case, where this possibility exists, they are not consistent with a second order phase transition either. The results show a discontinuous flow on the first order transition surface, which is a Monte Carlo renormalization group signal of singular RG transformations.  相似文献

We report a fairly detailed finite-size scaling analysis of the first-order phase transition in the three-dimensional 3-state Potts model on cubic lattices with emphasis on recently introduced quantities whose infinite-volume extrapolations are governed only by exponentially small terms. In these quantities no asymptotic power series in the inverse volume are involved which complicate the finite-size scaling behaviour of standard observables related to the specific-heat maxima or Binder-parameter minima. Introduced initially for strong first-order phase transitions in q-state Potts models with “large enough” q, the new techniques prove to be surprisingly accurate for a q value as small as 3. On the basis of the high-precision Monte Carlo data of Alves et al. [Phys. Rev. B 43 (1991) 5846], this leads to a refined estimate of βt = 0.550 565(10) for the infinite-volume transition point.  相似文献

The Political Districting Problem is mapped to a q-state Potts model in which the constraints can be written as interactions between sites or external fields acting on the system. Districting into q voter districts is equivalent to finding the ground state of this q-state Potts model. We illustrate this by districting Taipei city in its 2008 Legislature Election. We present a number of exact results on the random-bond,q-state Potts model. The quenched model on any finite planar graph or lattice is shown to obey a duality relation for general type of bond-randomness. In the annealed case, the solution of the model reduces to that of the regular (nonrandom) Potts model on the corresponding lattice. Explicit knowledge of the critical parameters of theq-state Potts model in two dimensions allows us to evaluate exactly the phase diagram of the annealed model on the square, triangular and honeycomb lattices. We discuss the behavior near the (random) critical point and comment on the relationship between the quenched and annealed systems. Using a Monte Carlo simulation and the single histogram reweighting technique, we study the critical behaviors and phase transitions of the Baxter-Wu model on a two-layer triangular lattice with repulsive interlayer interactions. Via the finite-size analysis, we obtain the transition temperatures and critical exponents at different interlayer coupling strengths. The reduced energy cumulants and the histograms reveal pseudo-first-order phase transitions, and the critical exponents derivate from the standard Baxter-Wu model if the coupling is weak. As the increase of the coupling, the behavior of the pseudo-first order transition disappears and the critical exponents are in accordance with the ones known for the 2D 4-state Potts model.  相似文献
