The heat transfer and friction characteristics of the heat exchangers having sinusoidal wave fins were experimentally investigated. Twenty-nine samples having different waffle heights (1.5 and 2.0 mm), fin pitches (1.3–1.7 mm) and tube rows (1–3) were tested. Focus was given to the effect of waffle configuration (herringbone or sinusoidal) on the heat transfer and friction characteristics. Results show that the sinusoidal wave geometry provides higher heat transfer coefficients and friction factors than the herringbone wave geometry, and the difference increases as the number of row increases. The j/f ratios of the herringbone wave geometry, however, are larger than those of the sinusoidal wave geometry. Compared with the herringbone wave geometry, the sinusoidal wave geometry yielded a weak row effect, which suggests a superior heat transfer performance at the fully developed flow region for the sinusoidal wave geometry. Possible reasoning is provided considering the flow characteristics in wavy channels. Within the present geometric variations, the effect of waffle height on the heat transfer coefficient was not prominent. The effect of fin pitch was also negligible. Existing correlations highly overpredicted both the heat transfer coefficients and friction factors. A new correlation was developed based on the present data.  相似文献

Comparative numerical study of laminar heat transfer characteristics of annular tubes with sinusoidal wavy fins has been conducted both experimentally and numerically with Re = 299–1,475. The uniform heat flux is imposed on the tube outside wall surface. Two tube materials (copper and stainless steel) are considered. It is found that the fluid temperature profile is not linear but convex along the flow direction due to the axial heat conduction in tube wall, and the effects of axial heat conduction on the heat transfer decreases with an increase in Reynolds number or decrease in tube wall thermal conductivity. The axial distributions of local Nusselt number could reach periodically fully developed after 3–5 cycles. The convectional data reduction method based on the traditional method should be improved for tube with high thermal conductivity or low Reynolds numbers, Otherwise, the heat transfer performance of internally finned tube may be underestimated.  相似文献

In this paper, a numerical investigation is performed for three-stage heat exchangers with plain plate fins and slit fins respectively, with a three-dimensional laminar conjugated model. The tubes are arranged in a staggered way, and heat conduction in fins is considered. In order to save the computer resource and speed up the numerical simulation, the numerical modeling is carried out stage by stage. In order to avoid the large pressure drop penalty in enhancing heat transfer, a slit fin is presented with the strip arrangement of “front coarse and rear dense” along the flow direction. The numerical simulation shows that, compared to the plain plate fin heat exchanger, the increase in the heat transfer in the slit fin heat exchanger is higher than that of the pressure drop, which proves the excellent performance of this slit fin. The fluid flow and heat transfer performance along the stages is also provided.  相似文献

Three dimensional numerical studies were performed for laminar heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of wavy fin heat exchangers with elliptic/circular tubes by body-fitted coordinates system. The simulation results of circular tube were compared with the experiment data, then circular and elliptic (e = b/a = 0.6) arrangements with the same minimum flow cross-sectional area were compared. A max relative heat transfer gain of up to 30% is observed in the elliptic arrangement, and corresponding friction factor only increased by about 10%. The effects of five factors on wavy fin and elliptic tube heat exchangers were examined: Reynolds number (based on the smaller ellipse axis, 500  4000), eccentricity (b/a, 0.6  1.0), fin pitch (Fp/2b, 0.05  0.4), fin thickness (Ft/2b, 0.006  0.04) and tube spanwise pitch (S1/2b, 1.0  2.0). The results show that with the increasing of Reynolds number and fin thickness, decreasing of the eccentricity and spanwise tube pitch, the heat transfer of the finned tube bank are enhanced with some penalty in pressure drop. There is an optimum fin pitch (Fp/2b = 0.1) for heat transfer, but friction factor always decreases with increase of fin pitch. And when Fp/2b is larger than 0.25, it has little effects on heat transfer and pressure drop. The results were also analyzed from the view point of field synergy principle. It was found that the effects of the five factors on the heat transfer performance can be well described by the field synergy principle.  相似文献

The heat transfer, pressure drop and flow patterns during flow boiling of R407C in a horizontal microfin tube have been investigated. The microfin tube is made of copper with a total fin number of 55 and a helix angle of 15°. The fin height is 0.24 mm and the inner tube diameter at fin root is 8.95 mm. The test tube is 1 m long. It is heated electrically. The experiments have been performed at saturation temperatures between −30°C and +10°C. The mass flux was varied between 25 and 300 kg/m2/s, the heat flux from 20,000 W/m2 down to 1,000 W/m2. The vapour quality was kept constant at 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 at the inlet and 0.8, 1.0 at the outlet, respectively. The measured heat transfer coefficient is compared with the correlations of Cavallini et al., Shah as well as Zhang et al. Cavallini’s correlation contains seven experimental constants. After fitting these constants to our measured values, the correlation achieves good agreement. The measured pressure drop is compared to the correlations of Pierre, Kuo and Wang as well as Müller-Steinhagen and Heck. The best agreement is achieved with the correlation of Kuo and Wang. Almost all values are calculated within an accuracy of ±30%. The flow regimes were observed. It is shown, that changes in the flow regime affect the heat transfer coefficient significantly.  相似文献

Air-side heat transfer and friction characteristics of five kinds of fin-and-tube heat exchangers, with the number of tube rows (N = 12) and the diameter of tubes (Do = 18 mm), have been experimentally investigated. The test samples consist of five types of fin configurations: crimped spiral fin, plain fin, slit fin, fin with delta-wing longitudinal vortex generators (VGs) and mixed fin with front 6-row vortex-generator fin and rear 6-row slit fin. The heat transfer and friction factor correlations for different types of heat exchangers were obtained with the Reynolds numbers ranging from 4000 to 10000. It was found that crimped spiral fin provides higher heat transfer and pressure drop than the other four fins. The air-side performance of heat exchangers with the above five fins has been evaluated under three sets of criteria and it was shown that the heat exchanger with mixed fin (front vortex-generator fin and rear slit fin) has better performance than that with fin with delta-wing vortex generators, and the slit fin offers best heat transfer performance at high Reynolds numbers. Based on the correlations of numerical data, Genetic Algorithm optimization was carried out, and the optimization results indicated that the increase of VG attack angle or length, or decrease of VG height may enhance the performance of vortex-generator fin. The heat transfer performances for optimized vortex-generator fin and slit fin at hand have been compared with numerical method.  相似文献

Flow boiling heat transfer in a vertical spirally internally ribbed tube   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Experiments of flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase flow frictional pressure drop in a spirally internally ribbed tube (φ22×5.5 mm) and a smooth tube (φ19×2 mm) were conducted, respectively, under the condition of 6×105 Pa (absolute atmosphere pressure). The available heated length of the test sections was 2500 mm. The mass fluxes were selected, respectively, at 410, 610 and 810 kg/m2 s. The maximum heat flux was controlled according to exit quality, which was no more than 0.3 in each test run. The experimental results in the spirally internally ribbed tube were compared with that in the smooth tube. It shows that flow boiling heat transfer coefficients in the spirally internally ribbed tube are 1.4–2 times that in the smooth tube, and the flow boiling heat transfer under the condition of smaller temperature differences can be achieved in the spirally internally ribbed tube. Also, the two-phase flow frictional pressure drop in the spirally internally ribbed tube increases a factor of 1.6–2 as compared with that in the smooth tube. The effects of mass flux and pressure on the flow boiling heat transfer were presented. The effect of diameters on flow boiling heat transfer in smooth tubes was analyzed. Based on the fits of the experimental data, correlations of flow boiling heat transfer coefficient and two-phase flow frictional factor were proposed, respectively. The mechanisms of enhanced flow boiling heat transfer in the spirally internally ribbed tube were analyzed. Received on 1 December 1999  相似文献

An experimental investigation of flow boiling heat transfer in a commercially available microfin tube with 9.52 mm outer diameter has been carried out. The microfin tube is made of copper with a total fin number of 55 and a helix angle of 15°. The fin height is 0.24 mm and the inner tube diameter at fin root is 8.95 mm. The test tube is 1 m long and is electrically heated. The experiments have been performed at saturation temperatures between 0 and −20°C. The mass flux was varied between 25 and 150 kg/m2s, the heat flux from 15,000 W/m2 down to 1,000 W/m2. All measurements have been performed at constant inlet vapour quality ranging from 0.1 to 0.7. The measured heat transfer coefficients range from 1,300 to 15,700 W/m2K for R134a and from 912 to 11,451 W/m2K for R404A. The mean heat transfer coefficient of R134a is in average 1.5 times higher than for R404A. The mean heat transfer coefficient has been compared with the correlations by Koyama et al. and by Kandlikar. The deviations are within ±30% and ±15%, respectively. The influence of the mass flux on the heat transfer is most significant between 25 and 62.5 kg/m2s, where the flow pattern changes from stratified wavy flow to almost annular flow. This flow pattern transition is shifted to lower mass fluxes for the microfin tube compared to the smooth tube.  相似文献

This paper presents the comparative studies on the effect of duct height on heat transfer and flow behavior between co-angular and co-rotating type finned surface in duct. Experiments were performed to investigate the effect of duct height on heat transfer enhancement of a surface affixed with arrays (7 × 7) of short rectangular plate fins of a co-angular and a co-rotating type pattern in the duct. An infrared imaging system with the camera of TVS 8000 was used to measure the temperature distributions to calculate the local heat transfer coefficients of the representative fin regions. Pressure drop and heat transfer experiments were performed for both types of fin pattern varying the duct to fin height ratio (H d/H f) of 2.0–5.0. The friction factor calculated from the pressure drop shows that friction factor decreases with increasing the duct to fin height ratio (H d/H f) regardless of fin pattern and this is expected because the larger friction occurs for smaller duct to fin height ratios. Detailed heat transfer distribution gives a clear picture of heat transfer characteristics of the overall surface as well as the influence of the duct height. In addition, different flow behavior and flow structure developed by both patterns were visualized by the smoke flow visualization technique.  相似文献

Wing-type vortex generators for fin-and-tube heat exchangers   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The effect of wing-type vortex generators on heat transfer and pressure drop of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger element was investigated. Local heat transfer was measured by liquid crystal thermography on the fin in the Reynolds number range of 600–2700. Flow losses were estimated from the measured pressure drop of an element. Delta winglets were used as vortex generators. Four fin-and-tube configurations were tested, an inline and a staggered arrangement, each with plain fins and with fins with a pair of vortex generators behind each tube. For the inline tube arrangement the vortex generators increase the heat transfer by 55–65% with a corresponding increase of 20–45% in the apparent friction factor. Results indicate that the vortex generators have the potential to reduce considerably the size and mass of heat exchangers for a given heat load.  相似文献

Results of a comparative evaluation of three heat transfer enhancement strategies for forced convection cooling of a parallel plate channel populated with heated blocks, representing electronic components mounted on printed circuit boards, are reported. Heat transfer in the reference geometry, the asymmetrically heated parallel plate channel, is compared with that for the basic grooved channel, and the same geometry enhanced by cylinders and vanes placed above the downstream edge of each heated block. In addition to conventional heat transfer and pressure drop measurements, holographic interferometry combined with high-speed cinematography was used to visualize the unsteady temperature fields in the self-sustained oscillatory flow. The locations of increased heat transfer within one channel periodicity depend on the enhancement technique applied, and were identified by analyzing the unsteady temperature distributions visualized by holographic interferometry. This approach allowed gaining insight into the mechanisms responsible for heat transfer enhancement. Experiments were conducted at moderate flow velocities in the laminar, transitional and turbulent flow regimes. Reynolds numbers were varied in the range Re = 200–6500, corresponding to flow velocities from 0.076 to 2.36 m/s. Flow oscillations were first observed between Re = 1050 and 1320 for the basic grooved channel, and around Re = 350 and 450 for the grooved channels equipped with cylinders and vanes, respectively. At Reynolds numbers above the onset of oscillations and in the transitional flow regime, heat transfer rates in the investigated grooved channels exceeded the performance of the reference geometry, the asymmetrically heated parallel plate channel. Heat transfer in the grooved channels enhanced with cylinders and vanes showed an increase by a factor of 1.2–1.8 and 1.5–3.5, respectively, when compared to data obtained for the basic grooved channel; however, the accompanying pressure drop penalties also increased significantly. This investigation is aimed at studying the heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop for turbulent airflow in a sudden expansion pipe equipped with propeller type swirl generator or spiral spring with several pitch ratios. The investigation is performed for the Reynolds number ranging from 7500 to 18,500 under a uniform heat flux condition. The experiments are also undertaken for three locations for the propeller fan (N = 15 blades and blade angle of 65°) and three pitch ratios for the spiral spring (P/D = 10, 15 and 20). The influences of using the propeller rotating freely and inserted spiral spring on heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop are reported. In the experiments, the swirl generator and spiral spring are used to create a swirl in the tube flow. Mean and relative mean Nusselt numbers are determined and compared with those obtained from other similar cases. The experimental results indicate that the tube with the propeller inserts provides considerable improvement of the heat transfer rate over the plain tube around 1.69 times for X/H = 5. While for the tube with the spiral spring inserts, an improvement of the heat transfer rate over the plain tube around 1.37 times for P/d = 20. Thus, because of strong swirl or rotating flow, the propeller location and the spiral spring pitch become influential on the heat transfer enhancement. The increase in pressure drop using the propeller is found to be three times and for spiral spring 1.5 times over the plain tube. Correlations for mean Nusselt number, fan location and spiral spring pitch are provided.  相似文献

The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of heat exchangers having louver fins were experimentally investigated. The samples had small fin pitches (1.0–1.4 mm), and experiments were conducted up to a very low frontal air velocity (as low as 0.3 m/s). Below a certain Reynolds number (critical Reynolds number), the fall-off of the heat transfer coefficient curve was observed. The critical Reynolds number was insensitive to the louver angle, and decreased as the louver pitch to fin pitch ratio (L p /F p ) decreased. Existing correlations on the critical Reynolds number did not adequately predict the data. The heat transfer coefficient curves crossed over as the Reynolds number decreased. Possible explanation is provided considering the louver pattern between neighboring rows. Different from the heat transfer coefficient, the friction factor did not show the fall-off characteristic. The reason was attributed to the form drag by louvers, which offsets the decreased skin friction at low Reynolds numbers. The friction factor increased as the fin pitch decreased and the louver angle increased. A new correlation predicted 92% of the heat transfer coefficient and 94% of the friction factor within ±10%.  相似文献

The forced-convection film condensation on a horizontal cylinder with wavy surface structure was performed by boundary-layer-approximation. The local/mean heat fluxes were obtained for the effects of tube temperature, wave number, and wave amplitude. The mean heat flux increases with decreasing wavy amplitude and tube temperatures. Furthermore, when β = 20 and α = 0.005, the mean heat flux slightly increases from 1.1 to 3.6% compared with that of smooth tube, depending on tube temperature.  相似文献

Two-pass channels are used for internal cooling in a number of engineering systems e.g., gas turbines. Fluid travelling through the curved path, experiences pressure and centrifugal forces, that result in pressure driven secondary motion. This motion helps in moving the cold high momentum fluid from the channel core to the side walls and plays a significant role in the heat transfer in the channel bend and outlet pass. The present study investigates using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the flow structure, heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop in a smooth channel with varying aspect ratio channel at different divider-to-tip wall distances. Numerical simulations are performed in two-pass smooth channel with aspect ratio Win/H = 1:3 at inlet pass and Wout/H = 1:1 at outlet pass for a variety of divider-to-tip wall distances. The results show that with a decrease in aspect ratio of inlet pass of the channel, pressure loss decreases. The divider-to-tip wall distance (Wel) not only influences the pressure drop, but also the heat transfer enhancement at the bend and outlet pass. With an increase in the divider-to-tip wall distance, the areas of enhanced heat transfer shifts from side walls of outlet pass towards the inlet pass. To compromise between heat transfer and pressure drop in the channel, Wel/H = 0.88 is found to be optimum for the channel under study.  相似文献

Flow condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) and pressure drop of R22, propylene, propane, DME and isobutane are measured on a horizontal plain tube. The main test section in the experimental flow loop is made of a plain copper tube of 8.8 mm inner diameter and 530 mm length. The refrigerant is cooled by passing cold water through the annulus surrounding the test section. Tests are performed at a fixed refrigerant saturation temperature of 40 ± 0.2 °C with mass fluxes of 100, 200, and 300 kg/m2 s and heat flux of 7.3–7.7 kW/m2. The heat transfer and pressure drop data are obtained in the vapor quality range of 10–90%. Test results show that for a given mass flux the flow condensation HTCs of propylene, propane, DME and isobutane are higher than those of R22 by up to 46.8%, 53.3%, 93.5% and 61.6%, respectively. Also well-known correlations developed based upon conventional fluorocarbon refrigerants predict the present data within a mean deviation of 33%. Finally, the pressure drop increases as the mass flux and quality increase and isobutane shows the highest pressure drop due to its lowest vapor pressure among the fluids tested.  相似文献

In the present study, the regionally-averaged heat transfer coefficients and flow temperature distributions were measured in an equilateral triangular channel with three different rib arrangements (α = 45, 90 and 135°). To measure regionally-averaged heat transfer coefficients in the channel, two rows of copper blocks and a single heater were installed on two ribbed walls. The fluid temperature distributions were obtained using a thermocouple-array. The rotation number ranged from 0.0 to 0.1 with a fixed Reynolds number of 10,000. For the 90° ribs, the heat transfer coefficients on the pressure side surface were increased significantly with rotation, while the suction side surface had lower heat transfer coefficients than the stationary channel. For the angled ribs, rib-induced secondary flow dominated the heat transfer characteristics and high heat transfer rates were observed on the regions near the inner wall for the 45° angled ribs and near the leading edge for the 135° angled ribs.  相似文献

An experimental investigation on the convective heat transfer and friction factor characteristics in the plain and helically dimpled tube under turbulent flow with constant heat flux is presented in this work using CuO/water nanofluid as working fluid. The effects of the dimples and nanofluid on the Nusselt number and the friction factor are determined in a circular tube with a fully developed turbulent flow for the Reynolds number in the range between 2500 and 6000. The height of the dimple/protrusion was 0.6 mm. The effect of the inclusion of nanoparticles on heat transfer enhancement, thermal conductivity, viscosity, and pressure loss in the turbulent flow region were investigated. The experiments were performed using helically dimpled tube with CuO/water nanofluid having 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% volume concentrations of nanoparticles as working fluid. The experimental results reveal that the use of nanofluids in a helically dimpled tube increases the heat transfer rate with negligible increase in friction factor compared to plain tube. The experimental results showed that the Nusselt number with dimpled tube and nanofluids under turbulent flow is about 19%, 27% and 39% (for 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% volume concentrations respectively) higher than the Nusselt number obtained with plain tube and water. The experimental results of isothermal pressure drop for turbulent flow showed that the dimpled tube friction factors were about 2-10% higher than the plain tube. The empirical correlations developed for Nusselt number and friction factor in terms of Reynolds number, pitch ratio and volume concentration fits with the experimental data within ±15%.  相似文献

An experimental investigation on the convective heat transfer and friction factor characteristics in the plain and dimpled tube under laminar flow with constant heat flux is carried out with distilled water and CuO/water nanofluids. For this, CuO nanoparticles with an average size of 15.3 nm were synthesized by sol–gel method. The nanoparticles are then dispersed in distilled water to form stable suspension of CuO/water nanofluid containing 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3% volume concentration of nanoparticles. It is found that the experimental Nusselt numbers for 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3% volume concentration of CuO nanoparticles are about 6, 9.9 and 12.6%, respectively higher than those obtained with distilled water in plain tube. However, the experimental Nusselt numbers for 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3% volume concentration of CuO nanoparticles are about 3.4, 6.8 and 12%, respectively higher than those obtained with distilled water in dimpled tube. The friction factor of CuO/water nanofluid is also increased due to the inclusion of nanoparticles and found to increase with nanoparticle volume concentration. The experimental results show that there exists a difference in the enhancement levels of Nusselt numbers obtained with nanofluids in plain tube and dimpled tube. Hence it is proposed that the mechanism of heat transfer enhancement obtained with nanofluids is due to particle migration from the core of fluid flow to tube wall.  相似文献

This investigation is aimed at studying the heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop for turbulent airflow in a sudden expansion pipe equipped with propeller swirl generator. The investigation is performed for the Reynolds number ranging from 10,000 to 41,000 under a uniform heat flux condition. The experiments are conducted for three locations for the propeller fan upstream the sudden expansion and three locations downstream the sudden expansion (N = 5 blades and blade angle of 45°). The influences of using a freely rotating propeller on heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop are reported. The experimental results indicate that inserting the propeller downstream of the tube provides considerable improvement of the heat transfer rate higher than inserting the propeller upstream the tube. The increase in pressure drop resulting from using the propeller upstream is found to be higher than the downstream swirler. The maximum performance enhancement for the downstream swirler is about 326% while it is about 213% for upstream one. Correlations for relative mean Nusselt number and enhancement performance are presented for different fan locations and different Reynolds numbers.  相似文献
