Earth-abundant transition metal-based catalysts have been extensively investigated for their applicability in water electrolysers to enable overall water splitting to produce clean hydrogen and oxygen. In this study a Fe−Co based catalyst is electrodeposited in 30 seconds under vigorous hydrogen evolution conditions to produce a high surface area material that is active for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This catalyst can achieve high current densities of 600 mAcm−2 at an applied potential of 1.6 V (vs RHE) in 1 M NaOH with a Tafel slope value of 48 mV dec−1 for the OER. In addition, the HER can be facilitated at current densities as high as 400 mA cm−2 due to the large surface area of the material. The materials were found to be predominantly amorphous but did contain crystalline regions of CoFe2O4 which became more evident after the OER indicating interesting compositional and structural changes that occur to the catalyst after an electrocatalytic reaction. This rapid method of creating a bimetallic oxide electrode for both the HER and OER could possibly be adopted to other bimetallic oxide systems suitable for electrochemical water splitting.  相似文献

Sea water electrolysis is one of the promising ways to produce hydrogen since it is available in plentiful supply on the earth. However, in sea water electrolysis toxic chlorine evolution is the preferred reaction over oxygen evolution at the anode. In this work, research has been focused on the development of electrode materials with a high selectivity for oxygen evolution over chlorine evolution. Selective oxidation in sea water electrolysis has been demonstrated by using a cation-selective polymer. We have used a perm-selective membrane (Nafion®), which electrostatically repels chloride ions (Cl) to the electrode surface and thereby enhances oxygen evolution at the anode. The efficiency and behaviour of the electrode have been characterized by means of anode current efficiency and polarization studies. The surface morphology of the electrode has been characterized by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results suggest that nearly 100% oxygen evolution efficiency could be achieved when using an IrO2/Ti electrode surface-modified by a perm-selective polymer.

It is highly attractive but challenging to develop earth‐abundant electrocatalysts for energy‐saving electrolytic hydrogen generation. Herein, we report that Ni2P nanoarrays grown in situ on nickel foam (Ni2P/NF) behave as a durable high‐performance non‐noble‐metal electrocatalyst for hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) in alkaline media. The replacement of the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction with such the more thermodynamically favorable HzOR enables energy‐saving electrochemical hydrogen production with the use of Ni2P/NF as a bifunctional catalyst for anodic HzOR and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction. When operated at room temperature, this two‐electrode electrolytic system drives 500 mA cm−2 at a cell voltage as low as 1.0 V with strong long‐term electrochemical durability and 100 % Faradaic efficiency for hydrogen evolution in 1.0 m KOH aqueous solution with 0.5 m hydrazine.  相似文献

A Ti/SnO2 + RuO2 + MnO2 electrode was prepared by thermal decomposition of their salts. Results from SEM and XPS analyses, respectively, indicate that the coating layer exhibits a compact structure and the oxidation state of Mn in the coating layer is +IV. The experimental activation energy for the oxygen evolution reaction, which increased linearly with increasing overpotential, is about 8 kJ⋅mol−1 at the equilibrium potential (η=0). The electrocatalytic characteristics of the anode are discussed in terms of ligand substitution reaction mechanisms (Sn1 and Sn2). It was found that the transition state for oxygen evolution at the anode in acidic solution follows a dissociative mechanism (Sn1 reaction). The Ti/SnO2 + RuO2 + MnO2 anode in conjunction with UV illumination was used to degrade phenol solutions, where the concentration of phenol remaining was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results indicate that the degradation efficiency of phenol on the anode can reach 96.3% after photoelectrocatalytic oxidation for 3 h.  相似文献

Developing noble‐metal‐free, earth‐abundant, highly active, and stable electrocatalysts with high efficiency for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions is of great importance for the development of overall water‐splitting devices, but still remains a challenging issue. Herein, a 3D heterostructured NiC/MoC/NiMoO4 electrocatalyst was prepared through a facile synthetic procedure. The electrocatalyst shows a superior catalytic activity and stability toward the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. The optimized NiC/MoC/NiMoO4 catalyst presents low overpotentials of 68 and 280 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm?2 in 1.0 m KOH for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively. Assembled as an electrolyzer for overall water splitting, such a heterostructure shows quite a low cell voltage of 1.52 V at 10 mA cm?2 and remarkable stability for more than 20 h. This work provides a facile but efficient approach for the design and preparation of highly efficient bifunctional and self‐supported heterostructured electrocatalysts that can serve as promising candidates in electrochemical energy storage and conversion.  相似文献

Typically, rational interfacial engineering can effectively modify the adsorption energy of active hydrogen molecules to improve water splitting efficiency. NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) composite, an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst, suffers from slow hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics, restricting its application for overall water splitting. Herein, we construct the hierarchical MoS2/NiFe LDH nanosheets with a heterogeneous interface used for HER and OER. Benefiting the hierarchical heterogeneous interface optimized hydrogen Gibbs free energy, tens of exposed active sites, rapid mass- and charge-transfer processes, the MoS2/NiFe LDH displays a highly efficient synergistic electrocatalytic effect. The MoS2/NiFe LDH electrode in 1 mol/L KOH exhibits excellent HER activity, only 98 mV overpotential at 10 mA/cm2. Significantly, when it assembled as anode and cathode for overall water splitting, only 1.61 V cell voltage was required to achieve 10 mA/cm2 with excellent durability (50 h).  相似文献

The high cost and low reserves of noble metals greatly hinder their practical applications in new energy production and conversion. The exploration of cost-effective alternative electrocatalysts with the ability to drive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is extremely significant to promote overall water splitting. Herein, ultrathin CoSe2/CNTs nanocomposites have been synthesized by a facile two-step method, where the ultrathin Co-MOF (metal organic-framework) decorated with cable-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (Co-MOF/CNTs) was initially fabricated, and followed a low-temperature selenization process. The ultrathin CoSe2 nanosheets as well as the superior conductivity of CNTs synergistically resulted in abundant active sites and enhanced conductivity to boost the electrocatalytic activity. The as-prepared CoSe2/CNTs electrocatalysts exhibited an overpotential of 190 mV and 300 mV vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 for the HER and OER in alkaline solution, respectively, and demonstrated superior durability. Furthermore, the as-prepared bifunctional CoSe2/CNTs electrocatalysts can act as cathode and anode in an electrolyzer, showing a cell voltage of 1.75 V at 10 mA/cm2 for overall water splitting.  相似文献

It is still an enormous challenge to develop non-precious electrocatalysts through low-cost and efficient methods. To fulfill highly active site exposure and optimized intrinsic activity, the 2-dimensional NiS2/CeO2 with unique heterostructure and abundant sulfur and oxygen vacancies (v-NiS2/CeO2 HS) was prepared by solvothermal reaction and annealing. The density functional theory calculations illustrate that the materials with both heterostructure and vacancies simultaneously have a positive effect on promoting the kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction and optimizing the adsorption energy of hydrogen. As a result, v-NiS2/CeO2 HSs deliver the current density of 10 mA/cm2 at the low overpotential of 271 mV for oxygen evolution reaction and the overpotential required by v-NiS2/CeO2 HSs for hydrogen evolution reaction is 123 mV (at 10 mA/cm2). The v-NiS2/CeO2 HSs demand a lower cell voltage with 1.64 V (at 10 mA/cm2) toward overall water splitting. These results provide a theoretical and practical direction for the development of low-cost, earth-abundant electrocatalysts.  相似文献

The suitability of a polymeric composite material for use as part of an anode structure in a cathodic protection system has been examined. The composite material was a conductive blend (volume resistivity typically 1.5 Ω cm) of carbon black in a polyethylene binder. A long operational lifetime for the material demands that the rate of carbon loss must be low. In the work reported here, electrochemical and in situ analytical techniques were employed to characterise the performance of the material over a wide range of anodic current densities in a variety of aqueous electrolytes. The predominant anodic electrochemical reaction on the polymeric material is CO2 formation in acid and neutral solutions, which causes loss of carbon from the surface and the development of a non-conducting layer of polyethylene. The characteristics of the reaction suggest that it occurs via the discharge of H2O. In alkaline pH, however, the anodic reactions are more complex. A high OH concentration (pH 12 or higher) favours the formation of oxygen rather than CO2, particularly at low anodic potentials. The presence of CO3 2− in the electrolyte catalyses the evolution of oxygen at pH values as low as 9. The electrochemical formation of oxygen always occurs in parallel with the generation of some humic acid in the solution. Received: 23 July 1998 / Accepted: 17 November 1998  相似文献

Photo/electrocatalysis of water (H2O) splitting and CO2 reduction reactions is a promising strategy to alleviate the energy crisis and excessive CO2 emissions. For the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) involved, the development of effective photo/electrocatalysts is critical to reduce the activation energy and accelerate the sluggish dynamics. Polyoxometalate (POM)-based compounds with tunable compositions and diverse structures are emerging as unique photo/electrocatalysts for these reactions as they offer unparalleled advantages such as outstanding solution and redox stability, quasi-semiconductor behaviour, etc. This Minireview provides a basic introduction related to photo/electrocatalytic HER, OER and CO2RR, followed by the classification of pristine POM-based compounds toward different catalytic reactions. Recent breakthroughs in engineering POM-based compounds as efficient photo/electrocatalysts are highlighted. Finally, the advantages, challenges, strategies and outlooks of POM-based compounds on improving photo/electrocatalytic performance are discussed.

Metallic Zinc (Zn) is considered as a remarkably promising anode for aqueous Zn-ion batteries due to its high volumetric capacity and low redox potential. Unfortunately, dendritic growth and severe side reactions destabilizes the electrode/electrolyte interface, and ultimately reduce the electrochemical performance. Here, an artificial protective layer (APL) with a regulated ion and electron-conducting interphase is constructed on the Zn-metal anode to provide excellent interfacial stability in high-rate cycling. The superior ionic and moderate electronic conductivity of the APL derives from the co-embedding of MXene and Zn(CF3SO3)2 salts into the polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel, which enables a synergistic effect of local current density reduction during plating and ion transport acceleration during stripping for Zn anode. Furthermore, the high Young's modulus of the protective layer and dendrite-free deposition morphology during cycling suppresses hydrogen evolution reactions (2.5 mmol h−1 cm−2) and passivation. As a result, in symmetrical cell tests, the modified battery presents a stable life of over 2000 cycles at ultra-high current density of 20 mA cm−2. This research presents a new insight into the formation and regulation of stable electrode-electrolyte interface for the Zn-metal anode.  相似文献

The bottleneck of alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction lies in the kinetically sluggish brought from multistep reaction processes involving water adsorption and dissociation, as well as hydrogen adsorption. In this work, we successfully synthesized o-CoSe2/c-CoSe2 heterostructures anchored on MoSe2 nanosheets to powerfully promote reaction processes. As an electrocatalyst, it exhibits a low overpotential of 112 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and a Tafel slope of 96.9 mV/dec for an alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction. Moreover, the as-prepared catalyst can behave as both cathode and anode for overall water splitting, which only requires 1.61 V cell voltage at 10 mA/cm2. Significantly, the cell voltage can be further reduced to 1.53 V at 10 mA/cm2 for water electrolysis under the simulated solar irradiation owing to such a semiconductor-based heterostructure that facilitates the separation of photogenerated charges. Here, the improving overall performance of this ternary electrocatalyst is attributed to the multifunctionality and synergistic interaction of different components in this heterogeneous material. The work provides a novel strategy to design active catalysts simultaneously using electric energy and solar energy for effective water splitting.  相似文献

Developing efficient non‐noble metal and earth‐abundant electrocatalysts with tunable microstructures for overall water splitting is critical to promote clean energy technologies for a hydrogen economy. Herein, novel three‐dimensional (3D) flower‐like Ni2P composed of mesoporous nanoplates with controllable morphology and high surface area was prepared by a hydrothermal method and low‐temperature phosphidation as efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Compared with the urchin‐like Nix Py , the 3D flower‐like Ni2P with a diameter of 5 μm presented an efficient and stable catalytic performance in 0.5 m H2SO4, with a small Tafel slope of 79 mV dec−1 and an overpotential of about 240 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a mass loading density of 0.283 mg cm−2. In addition, the catalyst also exhibited a remarkable performance for the OER in 1.0 m KOH electrolyte, with an overpotential of 320 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 72 mV dec−1. The excellent catalytic performance of the as‐prepared Ni2P may be ascribed to its novel 3D morphology with unique mesoporous structure.  相似文献

Bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolyte may improve the efficiency of overall water splitting. Nickel cobaltite (NiCo2O4) has been considered a promising electrode material for the OER. However, NiCo2O4 that can be used as an electrocatalyst in HER has not been studied yet. Herein, we report self‐assembled hierarchical NiCo2O4 hollow microcuboids for overall water splitting including both the HER and OER reactions. The NiCo2O4 electrode shows excellent activity toward overall water splitting, with 10 mA cm?2 water‐splitting current reached by applying just 1.65 V and 20 mA cm?2 by applying just 1.74 V across the two electrodes. The synthesis of NiCo2O4 microflowers confirms the importance of structural features for high‐performance overall water splitting.  相似文献

The high thermodynamic instability and side reactions of Zn-metal anode (ZMA), especially at high current densities, greatly impede the commercialization of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Herein, a fluorine-rich double protective layer strategy is proposed to obtain the high reversibility of AZIBs through the introduction of a versatile tetradecafluorononane-1,9-diol (TDFND) additive in aqueous electrolyte. TDFND molecule with large adsorption energy (−1.51 eV) preferentially absorbs on the Zn anode surface to form a Zn(OR)2 (R=−CH2−(CF2)7−CH2−) cross-linking complex network, which balances space electric field and controls the Zn2+ ion flux, thus enabling the uniform and compact deposition of Zn (002) crystal planes. Meanwhile, TDFND with low Lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO, 0.10 eV) energy level is priorly decomposed to regulate the interfacial chemistry of ZMA by building a ZnF2-rich solid electrode/electrolyte interface (SEI) layer. It is found that a 14 nm-thick SEI layer delivers excellent structural integrity to suppress parasitic reactions by blocking the direct contact of active water and ZMA. Consequently, the Zn electrode exhibits a superior cycling life over 430 h at 10 mA cm−2 and a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.8 % at 5 mA cm−2. Furthermore, a 68 mAh pouch cell delivers 80.3 % capacity retention for 1000 cycles.  相似文献

Hydrogen energy is considered as one of the ideal clean energies for solving the energy shortage and environmental issues, and developing highly efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting to produce hydrogen is still a huge challenge. Herein, for the first time, Ru-doped Cu2+1O vertically arranged nanotube arrays in situ grown on Cu foam (Ru/Cu2+1O NT/CuF) are reported and further investigated for their catalytic properties for overall water splitting. The Ru/Cu2+1O NT/CuF presents ultrahigh catalytic activities for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline conditions, and it exhibits a small overpotential of 32 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in the HER, and only needs 210 mV overpotential to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in the OER. Importantly, the alkaline electrolyzer using Ru/Cu2+1O NT/CuF as a bifunctional electrocatalyst only needs 1.53 V voltage to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which is much lower than the benchmark of IrO2(+)/Pt(−) counterpart (1.64 V at 10 mA cm−2). The excellent performance of the Ru/Cu2+1O NT/CuF catalyst is attributed to its high conductive substrate and special Ru-doped nanotube structure, which provides a high electrochemical active surface area and 3D gas diffusion channel.  相似文献

Establishing the atomic-scale structure of metal-oxide surfaces during electrochemical reactions is a key step to modeling this important class of electrocatalysts. Here, we demonstrate that the characteristic (√2×√2)R45° surface reconstruction formed on (001)-oriented magnetite single crystals is maintained after immersion in 0.1 M NaOH at 0.20 V vs. Ag/AgCl and we investigate its dependence on the electrode potential. We follow the evolution of the surface using in situ and operando surface X-ray diffraction from the onset of hydrogen evolution, to potentials deep in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) regime. The reconstruction remains stable for hours between −0.20 and 0.60 V and, surprisingly, is still present at anodic current densities of up to 10 mA cm−2 and strongly affects the OER kinetics. We attribute this to a stabilization of the Fe3O4 bulk by the reconstructed surface. At more negative potentials, a gradual and largely irreversible lifting of the reconstruction is observed due to the onset of oxide reduction.  相似文献

Active, stable, and earth-abundant bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting is pivotal to actualize large-scale water splitting via electrolysis. In this work, the hierarchical folded nanosheet-like Co0.85Se array on Ni foam is constructed by liquid-phase chemical conversion with cobalt precursor nanorod array. It can serve as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolyte, with a current density of 10 mA cm?2 at overpotential of 232 mV for OER and 129 mV for HER and Tafel slope of 78.9 mV dec?1 for OER and 95.0 mV dec?1 for HER, respectively. The two-electrode alkaline water electrolyzer utilizing this folded nanosheet-like Co0.85Se array as both anode and cathode toward overall water splitting offered a current of 10 mA cm?2 at a cell voltage of 1.60 V. This work explores an efficient and low-cost electrocatalyst for overall water splitting application in alkaline electrolytes.  相似文献
