The idea to synthesize and self-assemble nano-graphenes with structural precision into supramolecular polymers is just one of Klaus Müllen's many pioneering contributions to the chemical sciences. To honor his impact in the field of polymer science, we here describe a study that combines experimental and computational methods in studying the stability of kinetically trapped states of supramolecular polymers. We show that the introduction of stereocenters in the sidechains allow helical supramolecular polymers based on chiral triphenylene-2,6,10-tricarboxamide monomers to escape a kinetic trap more efficiently than polymers based on their achiral analogs. Partial depolymerization of the kinetically trapped state by increasing the temperature followed by polymerization by lowering the temperature shows that monomers either polymerize on existing stacks or self-nucleate to form the thermodynamically more stable state. Chiral monomers prefer the latter more than achiral monomers.  相似文献

Multicomponent supramolecular block copolymers (BCPs) have attracted much attention due to their potential functionalities, but examples of three-component supramolecular BCPs are rare. Herein, we report the synthesis of three-component multiblock 1D supramolecular copolymers of Ir(III) complexes 1 – 3 by a sequential seeded supramolecular polymerization approach. Precise control over the kinetically trapped species via the pathway complexity of the monomers is the key to the successful synthesis of BCPs with up to 9 blocks. Furthermore, 5-block BCPs with different sequences could be synthesized by changing the addition order of the kinetic species during a sequentially seeded process. The corresponding heterogeneous nucleation-elongation process has been confirmed by the UV/Vis absorption spectra, and each segment of the multiblock copolymers could be characterized by both TEM and SEM. Interestingly, the energy transfer leads to weakened emission of 1 -terminated and enhanced emission of 3 -terminated BCPs. This study will be an important step in advancing the synthesis and properties of three-component BCPs.  相似文献

A chiral regioregular polythiophene (PT), poly[3-[4-((R)-4-ethyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl)phenyl]thiophene] (poly-1), forms chiral aggregates which exhibit a unique induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the pi-pi transition region derived from the supramolecular chirality in the presence of various poor solvents or metal salts in chloroform. We report here that the chirality of such supramolecular aggregates can be switched ("on" and "off") through electron transfer. We have found that upon the addition of copper(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate [Cu(OTf)(2)] to the chiral aggregates of poly-1 in a chloroform-acetonitrile mixture, the ICD disappears because of the oxidative doping of the poly-1 main chain, while a further addition of amines such as triethylenetetramine (TETA) induces undoping of the poly-1 which results in the reappearance of the ICDs. Therefore, the supramolecular chirality of the poly-1 assemblies was reversibly controlled by the addition or removal of an electron from the poly-1 main chain. This may be the first example of a reversible supramolecular chirality switch on chiral PT aggregates. We investigated the mechanism of the chirality switch through the doping and undoping process on the polymer main chain by means of absorption and CD spectroscopies, ESR, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray diffraction, and AFM measurements.  相似文献

In this contribution,we utilized surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) to prepare organic-inorganic hybrid core/shell silica nanoparticles (NPs),where silica particles acted as cores and polymeric shells (PAzoMA*) were attached to silica particles via covalent bond.Subsequently, chiroptical switch was successfully constructed on silica NPs surface taking advantage of supramolecular chiral self-assembly of the grafted side-chain Azo-containing polymer (PAzoMA*).We found that the supramolecular chirality was highly dependent on the molecular weight of grafted PAzoMA*.Meanwhile, the supramolecular chirality could be regulated using 365 nm UV light irradiation and heating-cooling treatment, and a reversible supramolecular chiroptical switch could be repeated for over five cycles on silica NPs surface. Moreover, when heated above the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PAzoMA*,the organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles (SiO2@PAzoMA*NPs) still exhibited intense DRCD signals.Interestingly, the supramolecular chirality could be retained in solid film for more than 3 months. To conclude,we have prepared an organic-inorganic hybrid core/shell chiral silica nanomaterial with dynamic reversible chirality, thermal stability and chiral storage functions, providing potential applications in dynamic asymmetric catalysis, chiral separation and so on.  相似文献

Manipulating the self-assembly pathway is essentially important in the supramolecular synthesis of organic nano- and microarchitectures. Herein, we design a series of photoisomerizable chiral molecules, and realize precise control over pathway complexity with external light stimuli. The hidden single-handed microcoils, rather than the straight microribbons through spontaneous assembly, are obtained through a kinetically controlled pathway. The competition between molecular interactions in metastable photostationary intermediates gives rise to a variety of molecular packing and thereby the possibility of chirality transfer from molecules to supramolecular assemblies.  相似文献

We prepared novel cholesterol-appended squaraine dye 1 and model squaraine dye 2 and investigated their aggregation behavior in solution and thin films using photophysical, chiroptical, and microscopic techniques. Investigations on the dependence of aggregation on solvent composition (good/poor, CHCl3/CH3CN) demonstrated that squaraine dye 1 forms two novel H-type chiral supramolecular assemblies with opposite chirality at different good/poor solvent compositions. Model compound 2 formed J-type achiral assemblies under similar conditions. The supramolecular assembly of 1 observed at lower fractions of the poor solvent could be assigned to the thermodynamically stable form, while a kinetically controlled assembly is formed at higher fractions of the poor solvent. This assignment is evidenced by temperature- and concentration-dependent experiments. With increasing temperature, the chirality of the kinetically controlled aggregate was lost and, on cooling, the aggregate with the opposite chirality was formed. On further heating and cooling the aggregates thus formed resulted in no significant changes in chirality, that is they are thermodynamically stable. Similarly, at lower concentrations, the thermodynamically stable form exists, but at higher concentration aggregation was found to proceed with kinetic control. Based on these observations it can be assumed that formation of the kinetically controlled assembly might be largely dependent on the presence of the nonpolar cholesterol moiety as well as the amount of poor solvent present. However, under solvent-free conditions, structurally different aggregates were observed when drop cast from solutions containing monomer, whereas a left-handed CD signal corresponding to the thermodynamically controlled assemblies was observed from pre-aggregated solutions.  相似文献

An achiral oligo(p-phenylene vinylene) derivative with a ureido-triazine hydrogen bonding unit self-assembles into rows of hydrogen bonded dimers at the liquid/solid interface. Scanning tunneling microscopy reveals the formation of chiral domains, but overall, the surface remains racemic. Addition of a chiral auxiliary which is able to interact with the dimers through hydrogen bonding, showed that global organizational chirality could be achieved since a majority of the domains show the same handedness. After removing the chiral auxiliary with a volatile solvent, the global organizational chirality could be trapped, revealing a memory effect. With this straightforward supramolecular approach, we were able to create a chiral surface with preferred handedness composed of achiral molecules at the air/solid interface.  相似文献

Helical rosette nanotubes (RNTs) are obtained through the self-assembly of the GwedgeC motif, a self-complementary DNA base analogue featuring the complementary hydrogen bonding arrays of both guanine and cytosine. The first step of this process is the formation of a 6-membered supermacrocycle (rosette) maintained by 18 hydrogen bonds, which then self-organizes into a helical stack defining a supramolecular sextuple helix whose chirality and three-dimensional organization arise from the chirality, chemical structure, and conformational organization of the GwedgeC motif. Because a chiral GwedgeC motif is predisposed to express itself asymmetrically upon self-assembly, there is a natural tendency for it to form one chiral RNT over its mirror image. Here we describe the synthesis and characterization of a chiral GwedgeC motif that self-assembles into helical RNTs in methanol, but undergoes mirror image supramolecular chirality inversion upon the addition of very small amounts of water (<1% v/v). Extensive physical and computational studies established that the mirror-image RNTs obtained, referred to as chiromers, result from thermodynamic (in water) and kinetic (in methanol) self-assembly processes involving two conformational isomers of the parent GwedgeC motif. Although derived from conformational states, the chiromers are thermodynamically stable supramolecular species, they display dominant/recessive behavior, they memorize and amplify their chirality in an achiral environment, they change their chirality in response to solvent and temperature, and they catalytically transfer their chirality. On the basis of these studies, a detailed mechanism for supramolecular chirality inversion triggered by specific molecular interactions between water molecules and the GwedgeC motif is proposed.  相似文献

The helical stereomutation in the kinetically controlled coassembly of the reported carbonyl‐bridged triarylamines (CBTs) is described. The copolymerization of chiral CBTs (S)‐1 or (R)‐1 with achiral 2 in sergeants‐and‐soldiers (SaS) experiments results in a tunable helicity conditioned by the percentage of the chiral sergeant and by the cooling rate. The dissimilar inherent chirality of the extended monomeric (M) and intramolecularly H‐bonded metastable (M*) species, as well as the different stability of the kinetic trap of the chiral CBTs (S)‐1 / (R)‐1 and the achiral CBT 2 , condition the chirality transfer and afford J‐aggregates of inverse handedness.  相似文献

For chiral hydrogels and related applications, one of the critical issues is how to control the chirality of supramolecular systems in an efficient way, including easy operation, efficient transfer of chirality, and so on. Herein, supramolecular chirality of l ‐phenylalanine based hydrogels can be effectively controlled by using a broad range of metal ions. The degree of twisting (twist pitch) and the diameter of the chiral nanostructures can also be efficiently regulated. These are ascribed to the synergic effect of hydrogen bonding and metal ion coordination. This study may develop a method to design a new class of electronically, optically, and biologically active materials.  相似文献

Abstract

Three cases are described where chirality is recognized by achiral molecules, where chirality is induced into achiral compounds through interactions with chiral compounds, and lastly where induced chirality in the solid-state is utilized for an enantio-selective photoreaction. In the first instance, the thermodynamically and kinetically preferred diastereoisomer of an optically labile chromium complex depended on the nature of the achiral solvent. In the second case, for the first time 1,2-chloroethane was trapped and observed in a chiral near-eclipsed form and 1-chloropropane in the truly eclipsed form at room temperature in a 1:1 inclusion complex with an optically active host molecule. Finally, induced chirality in a prochiral compound in the solid-state was successfully employed in an enantio-selective photoreaction. In the two cases, solid-state CD provided valuable information.  相似文献

Supramolecular chirality in the Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) films of two achiral amphiphilic Schiff bases, 2-(2'-benzimidazolyliminomethyl)-4-octadecyloxyphenol (BSC18) and 2-(2'-benzthiazolyliminomethyl)-4-octadecyloxyphenol (TSC18), was investigated. Both of these amphiphiles could form LS films from the water surface or coordinate with Ag(I) in the subphase to form Ag(I)-coordinated LS films. Although both of these amphiphiles were achiral, TSC18 formed a chiral LS film from the water surface, while BSC18 formed a chiral Ag(I)-coordinated LS film from the aqueous AgNO3 subphase. The supramolecular chirality in these LS films was suggested to be due to a cooperative stereoregular pi-pi stacking of the functional groups together with the long alkyl chains in a helical sense. The relationship between the chirality of the LS films and the molecular structures of TSC18 and BSC18 as well as their H-bond or coordination behaviors was discussed. The Schiff base films showed a reversible color change upon exposure to HCl and NH3 gas alternatively; however, the supramolecular chirality was irreversible during these processes.  相似文献

Polymerization-induced chiral self-assembly(PICSA)is an efficient strategy that not only allows the construction of the supramolecular chiral assemblies in a controlled manner but also can regulate the morphology in situ.Herein,a series of azobenzene-containing block copolymer(Azo-BCP)assemblies with tunable morphologies and supramolecular chirality were obtained through the PICSA strategy. The supramolecular chirality of Azo-BCP assemblies could be regulated by carbon dioxide(CO2)stimulus,and completely recovered by bubbling with Ar.A reversible morphology transformation and chiroptical switching process could also be achieved by the alternative 365 nm UV light irradiation and heatingcooling treatment. Moreover, the supramolecular chirality is thermo-responsive and a reversible chiral-achiral switching was successfully realized, which can be reversibly repeated for at least five times. This work provides a feasible strategy for constructing triple stimuli-responsive supramolecular chiral nano-objects in situ.  相似文献

We examine how postsynthesis nanoparticle ligand shell modifications as a general approach can help in the understanding of currently proposed mechanisms for gold nanoparticle chirality. We compare the CD response of chirally decorated mixed-monolayer-protected gold nanoparticles synthesized in situ with quasi-identical gold nanoparticles either prepared by place exchange reactions or subjected to an aqueous base, resulting in partial hydrolysis and simultaneous partial racemization. We find that the CD response at wavelengths where the free chiral ligand does not absorb strongly depends on the preparation conditions, i.e., in situ synthesis vs place exchange, and that postsynthesis racemization of the chiral ligand produces racemic nanoparticles with no CD response, i.e., no induction of a chiral bias during reductive nanoparticle formation. Considering all experimental results for the described gold nanoparticle system with a C12H24 spacer between the nanoparticle surface and chiral center, the so-called "vicinal effect" with the formation of a supramolecular assembly of the chiral moieties seems to be active. Finally, we argue that postsynthesis nanoparticle ligand shell modifications such as racemization and/or place exchange reactions are very powerful tools to unravel contributions of the different gold nanoparticle chirality mechanisms.  相似文献

Recent studies on water‐splitting photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) have demonstrated the intriguing possibility of controlling the spin state in this chemical reaction to form H2 and O2 by exploiting the chirality of organic π‐conjugated supramolecular polymers. Although this fascinating phenomenon has been disclosed, the chiral supramolecular materials reported thus far are not optimized for acting as efficient photosensitizer for dye‐sensitized PECs. In this work we report on the design, synthesis, and characterization of chiral supramolecular aggregates based on C3‐symmetric triphenylamine‐based dyes that are able to both absorb visible light and control the spin state of the process. Variable temperature‐dependent spectroscopic measurements reveal the assembly process of the dyes and confirm the formation of chiral aggregates, both in solution as well as on solid supports. Photoelectrochemical measurements on TiO2‐based anodes validate the advantage of using chiral supramolecular aggregates as photosensitizer displaying higher photocurrent compared to achiral analogues. Moreover, fluorimetric tests for the quantification of the hydrogen peroxide produced, confirm the possibility of controlling the spin of the reaction exerting spin‐selection with chiral supramolecular polymers. These results represent a further step towards the next‐generation of organic‐based water‐splitting solar cells.  相似文献

The design and synthesis of achiral organic functional molecules which can assemble into a chiral with selective handedness in the absence of chiral substances is an important in understanding the role chirality plays within these systems. In this review, we described general approaches towards supramolecular chiral molecules the synthesis and self‐assembly of achiral molecule to active chiral molecules to investigate controlled supramolecular chiral nanostructures with their photoluminescent properties for rapid, sensitive and selective detection of analytes of choice. Various small molecules have been discussed for achiral to chiral along with induction of chirality and controlled chiral helical structures in detail. We discussed few examples where stimuli used to control the chirality such as temperature, pH etc. Finally, we will also explore on the photo responsive helicity properties of the aggregation induced emission active molecule such as tetraphenylethene conjugates.  相似文献

We present investigations on noncovalent bonding and supramolecular self-assembly of two related molecular building blocks at a noble metal surface: 4-[trans-2-(pyrid-4-yl-vinyl)]benzoic acid (PVBA) and 4-[(pyrid-4-yl-ethynyl)]benzoic acid (PEBA). These rigid, rodlike molecules comprising the same complementary moieties for hydrogen bond formation are comparable in shape and size. For PVBA, the ethenylene moiety accounts for two-dimensional (2-D) chirality upon confinement to a surface; PEBA is linear and thus 2-D achiral. Molecular films were deposited on a Ag(111) surface by organic molecular beam epitaxy and characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy. At low temperatures (around 150 K), both species form irregular networks of flat lying molecules linked via their endgroups in a diffusion-limited aggregation process. In the absence of kinetic limitations (adsorption or annealing at room temperature), hydrogen-bonded supramolecular assemblies form which are markedly different. With PVBA, enantiomorphic twin chains in two mirror-symmetric species running along a high-symmetry direction of the substrate lattice form by diastereoselective self-assembly of one enantiomer. The chirality signature is strictly correlated between neighboring twin chains. Enantiopure one-dimensional (1-D) supramolecular nanogratings with tunable periodicity evolve at intermediate coverages, reflecting chiral resolution in micrometer domains. In contrast, PEBA assembles in 2-D hydrogen-bonded islands, which are enantiomorphic because of the orientation of the supramolecular arrangements along low-symmetry directions of the substrate. Thus, for PVBA, chiral molecules form 1-D enantiomorphic supramolecular structures because of mesoscopic resolution of a 2-D chiral species, whereas with PEBA, the packing of an achiral species causes 2-D enantiomorphic arrangements. Model simulations of supramolecular ordering provide a deeper understanding of the stability of these systems.  相似文献

Steroidal bile acids and their derivatives exhibit characteristic inclusion behaviors in the crystalline state. Their crystals present varied assemblies due to asymmetric molecular structures, which relate to supramolecular properties through cooperative weak interactions. An overview indicates that the steroidal assemblies lie in an intermediate position among various molecules and have hierarchical structures such as primary, secondary, tertiary, and host-guest assemblies like proteins. Such an interpretation brought about the idea that the assemblies with dimensionality present supramolecular chirality such as three-axial, tilt, helical, bundle, and complementary chirality. This concept of the supramolecular chirality enables us to understand formation of chiral crystals starting from the molecular chirality of the steroidal molecules.  相似文献
