The optical constants of single crystals of hexagonal selenium in the region of the intrinsic absorption edge in polarized light were investigated. The absorption edge for light polarized normal to the optical axis of the crystal is displaced towards longer wavelengths. The absorption maximum of hexagonal selenium for a wavelength of 0·6 is interpreted as the maximum corresponding to interaction between neighbouring chains and in connection with this the position of the absorption edge of different modifications of selenium is discussed.

The nonlinear properties of a ferromagnet are studied. Many-time retarded Green's functions are used to obtain an expression for the cubic nonlinearity tensor with allowance for spatial dispersion of a uniaxial ferromagnet. The components due to the dipole-dipole interaction of the spins and also due to the anisotropy energy are found. A comparative analysis is made of the different components of the cubic nonlinearity tensor in both the nonresonance case and for various resonances, in particular when 0, 3 2w0, 2 0, 3 0 for the case in tripling of the frequency. Here, is the frequency of the incident wave and 0 is the frequency of uniform precession. It is shown that in the non-resonance case the largest components are those that are nonvanishing when no allowance is made for spatial dispersion; in the resonance cases the largest components are those due to the dipole-dipole interaction of the ferromagnetism spins.Translated from Izvestiya VUZ. A theory is given of a new structure produced when demagnetizing uniaxial single crystals (e.g. magnetoplumbite) in a field normal to thec axis. The experimental results fully support the theory on the assumption that domain structures produced under normal conditions are metastable. Methods are given by which stable structures can be prepared from such metastable ones. On the basis of these results opinions are expressed as to the nucleation of plate and honeycomb structures, produced either by reducing the field from saturation or by cooling below the Curie point.

The paper explains the theory of modelling electrostatic fields by a resistance network. The conditions, which the resistance network must satisfy, are derived and the question of modelling electrodes of different shapes is solved. The finished network and the results obtained on it when modelling a jet for a linear h-f accelerator of electrons are described. Particular attention is paid to the influence of a space charge, the modelling of which is an advantage of this method.

The influence of the spectral profile of theK12 doublet and diffraction broadening on the integrated intensities of high angle diffractions
Relations are derived giving the influence of the spectral profile of theK 1 2 doublet and the influence of diffraction broadening on the productLP of the Lorentz and polarization factor. The relations are used to calculate the numerical values of the corresponding corrections for the theoretical values of the integrated intensities of diffractions in the angular region 75°85° and for the most frequently usedK radiation of copper, cobalt and iron.It follows from the calculated values of the corrections that, due to the accuracy at present attainable in experimental measurements, the influence of the spectral profile in diffractions with an angle<80° can be neglected when calculating the theoretical values of the integrated intensities. The influence of diffraction broadening need not be taken into account in diffractions with an angle<83° even when the broadening is large (e. g. five-fold). As the angle approaches 90°, of eourse, the corrections for both above influences suddenly increase, particularly those for diffraction broadening, and their limitation becomes difficult and is not single-valued. For this reason the use of diffractions with angles>83° does not appear very suitable for solving problems based on exact measurement of the integrated intensities and their comparison with the corresponding theoretical values.

The Riemann walk is the lattice version of the Lévy flight. For the one-dimensional Riemann walk of Lévy exponent 0<<2 we study the statistics of the support, i.e., set of visited sites, after t steps. We consider a wide class of support related observables M(t), including the number S(t) of visited sites and the number I(t) of sequences of adjacent visited sites. For t we obtain the asymptotic power laws for the averages, variances, and correlations of these observables. Logarithmic correction factors appear for =2/3 and =1. Bulk and surface observables have different power laws for 1<2. Fluctuations are shown to be universal for 2/3 <2. This means that in the limit t the deviations from average M(t)M(t)–M-0304;(t-0304;) are fully described either by a single M independent stochastic process (when 2/3 <1) or by two such processes, one for the bulk and one for the surface observables (when 1<<2).  相似文献

Magnetic transitions are described by the critical indices0,1/3,4/3 while some ferroelectric transitions appear to give0,R~1/2,1. It is pointed out that these two sets of values for the critical indices are allowed by the scaling laws and stability conditions near the phase transitions.The authors thank Prof. R. S. The potentials of an electromagnetic field of multipoles in a dielectric, which is realized by a dielectric sphere having a perfectly conducting surface, are derived. The diagonal values of the energy for thez component of the angular momentum and the square of the angular momentum of the field are determined and also the ratio between thez component of the angular momentum and the energy and the ratio between the square of the angular momentum and the square of the energy. It is shown that the total angular momentum can be divided in the usual way into orbital and spin parts but that these parts cannot be interpreted as the orbital and spin angular momentum because their eigenvalues cannot be the eigenvalues of any operator of infinitesimal rotation. In the commutation rules of a multipole field the vector character of the field is to a certain extent suppressed and the spin of the photon in a state with a certain value of the energy, parityz component of the angular momentum and the square of the angular momentum is not defined.

The brightness waves of electroluminescence of ZnS—Cu were measured for the case of excitation with rectangular pulses as a function of the amplitude of the pulses and the temperature. A concrete model is proposed for electronic processes in barriers in ZnS crystals, the consequences of which for the decay of electroluminescence are in agreement with measurements.

Radiative capture of slow neutrons on atomic nuclei
The energies and absolute intensities of gamma radiation from the radiative capture of thermal neutrons on S33, Cl36, K40, Ca41, V52, Mn56 and Hg200 nuclei were measured by means of a one-crystal scintillation spectrometer. The transitions measured in the energy interval 100–1200 keV are mostly transitions between the lowest excited states of the nuclei studied.

In this paper the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic thin layers are studied by calculating the partition function for the magnetic system inKirkwood's approximation of the second order. The results obtained for the Curie temperature and the magnetization are in somewhat better agreement with the experiment than those obtained by Valenta.

The influence of an alternating magnetic field on the remanent state of magnetically soft materials
A study is made of the influence of an alternating magnetic field of varying maximum amplitude on the remanent state, or rather, apparent remanent state of toroidal and open samples of metallic and non-metallic magnetically soft ferromagnetics. An interpretation of the corresponding dependences is given on the basis of Kondorski's conception of the composition of a polycrystalline jerromagnetic material.

The first part of the paper gives a general equation for triple-crystal arrangement with perfect crystals on the assumption that the third crystal is rotated. It is shown that in the case of perfect crystals the shape of the reflection curve is practically independent of the vertical divergence. The case of mosaic crystals is also solved and the possibility of rotation by other than the third crystal is considered. A method is proposed for investigating the imperfection of a crystal which is different from methods used up to now. The paper is supplemented by some experimental results.

The characteristic function is introduced, describing completely the monochromating effect of monochromating units. Expressions for this function are presented for monochromating units frequently used. An example of computation for Johansson's unit shows the conditions in a special case. The curves indicating the shift of the wavelength centroid of monochromated radiation for crystals of different perfection allow conclusions to be drawn about the influence of the alignment of the crystal on precision measurements of lattice constants. The experiments verify the suggested model. The computations for a given experimental arrangement permit a simple determination of the effective breadth of the reflection curve, if a distance of two suitably chosen diffraction lines of a polycrystalline specimen is measured. Finally, it was found experimentally that a small elastic bending does not essentially alter the reflection curve of highly elastic and imperfect crystals unless macroscopic distortions are present.
