Methyl methacrylate/styrene (MMA/S), ethyl methacrylate/styrene (EMA/S) and butyl methacrylate/styrene (BMA/S) feeds (>90 mol % methacrylate) were copolymerized in 50 wt % p‐xylene at 90 °C with 10 mol % of additional SG1‐free nitroxide mediator relative to unimolecular initiator (BlocBuilder®) to yield methacrylate rich copolymers with polydispersities w/ n = 1.23–1.46. kpK values (kp = propagation rate constant, K = equilibrium constant) for MMA/S copolymerizations were comparable with previous literature, whereas EMA/S and BMA/S copolymerizations were characterized by slightly higher kpK's. Chain extensions with styrene at 110 °C initiated by the methacrylate‐rich macroinitiators (number average molecular weight n = 12.9–33.5 kg mol?1) resulted in slightly broader molecular weight distributions with w/ n = 1.24–1.86 and were often bimodal. Chain extensions with glycidyl methacrylate/styrene/methacrylate (GMA/S/XMA where XMA = MMA, EMA or BMA) mixtures at 90 °C using the same macroinitiators resulted frequently in bimodal molecular weight distributions with many inactive macroinitiators and higher w/ n = 2.01–2.48. P(XMA/S) macroinitiators ( n = 4.9–8.9 kg mol?1), polymerized to low conversion and purified to remove “dead” chains, initiated chain extensions with GMA/MMA/S and GMA/EMA/S giving products with w/ n ~ 1.5 and much fewer unreacted macroinitiators (<5%), whereas the GMA/BMA/S chain extension was characterized by slightly more unreacted macroinitiators (~20%). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of new 7‐membered diazepanone alkoxyamines [2,2,7,7‐tetramethyl‐1‐(1‐phenyl‐ethoxy)‐[1,4]diazepan‐5‐one ( 3 ) and 2,7‐diethyl‐2,3,7‐trimethyl‐1‐(1‐phenyl‐ethoxy)‐[1,4]diazepan‐5‐one ( 8 )] through the Beckmann rearrangement of piperidin‐4‐one alkoxyamines was developed. Both 3 and 8 were evaluated as initiators and regulators for the nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization of styrene and n‐butyl acrylate. 8 , a sterically highly hindered alkoxyamine readily available as a crystalline solid, allowed the fast and controlled polymerization and preparation of polymers with low polydispersity indices (1.2–1.4) up to a degree of polymerization of about 100. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well‐defined amphiphilic copolymer of ‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) linked with comb‐shaped [poly(styrene‐co‐2‐hydeoxyethyl methacrylate)‐graft‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)] (PEO‐b‐P(St‐co‐HEMA)‐g‐PCL) was successfully synthesized by combination of reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) with ring‐opening anionic polymerization and coordination–insertion ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). The α‐methoxy poly(ethylene oxide) (mPEO) with ω,3‐benzylsulfanylthiocarbonylsufanylpropionic acid (BSPA) end group (mPEO‐BSPA) was prepared by the reaction of mPEO with 3‐benzylsulfanylthiocarbonylsufanyl propionic acid chloride (BSPAC), and the reaction efficiency was close to 100%; then the mPEO‐BSPA was used as a macro‐RAFT agent for the copolymerization of styrene (St) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) using 2,2‐azobisisobutyronitrile as initiator. The molecular weight of copolymer PEO‐b‐P(St‐co‐HEMA) increased with the monomer conversion, but the molecular weight distribution was a little wide. The influence of molecular weight of macro‐RAFT agent on the polymerization procedure was discussed. The ROP of ε‐caprolactone was then completed by initiation of hydroxyl groups of the PEO‐b‐P(St‐co‐HEMA) precursors in the presence of stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2). Thus, the amphiphilic copolymer of linear PEO linked with comb‐like P(St‐co‐HEMA)‐g‐PCL was obtained. The final and intermediate products were characterized in detail by NMR, GPC, and UV. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 467–476, 2006  相似文献

A well‐defined and monofunctional poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐based (P3HT) macroinitiator has been obtained through a clean, simple, and an efficient multistep synthesis process. The macroinitiator is obtained via intermolecular radical 1,2‐addition onto an ω‐acrylate‐terminated P3HT macromonomer. In a second step, well‐defined rod‐coil block copolymers were obtained by nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMRP) using the so‐called Blocbuilder®. The polymerization was found to be controlled with various monomers such as styrene, isoprene, 4‐vinylpyridine, or methyl acrylate. This process constitutes a very promising way to obtain versatile and clean materials for organic electronics. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Nitroxide‐mediated controlled/living free‐radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by the SG1‐based alkoxyamine BlocBuilder was successfully performed in bulk at 80–99 °C with the help of a very small amount of acrylonitrile (AN, 2.2–8.8 mol %) as a comonomer. Well‐defined PMMA‐rich P(MMA‐co‐AN) copolymers were prepared with the number‐average molar mass, Mn, in the 6.1–32 kg mol?1 range and polydispersity indexes as low as 1.24. Incorporation of AN in the copolymers was demonstrated by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and its effect on the chain thermal properties was evaluated by DSC and TGA analyses. Investigation of chain‐end functionalization by an alkoxyamine group was performed by means of 31P NMR spectroscopy and chain extensions from a P(MMA‐co‐AN)‐SG1 macroinitiator. It demonstrated the very high proportion of SG1‐terminated polymer chains, which opened the door to block copolymer synthesis with a high quality of control. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A terpyridine‐functionalized alkoxyamine unimolecular initiator was used for the nitroxide‐mediated controlled living radical polymerization of n‐butylacrylate, N,N‐dimethylacrylamide, 4‐vinylpyridine, 2‐vinylpyridine, and isoprene. For the former three monomers, the kinetics were studied. All polymerizations resulted in well‐defined polymers having a single terpyridine ligand at the chain end and narrow polydispersity indices. The obtained polymers are valuable building blocks for metallo‐supramolecular polymers. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 6331–6344, 2005  相似文献

β‐Methyl‐α‐methylene‐γ‐butyrolactone (MMBL) was synthesized and then was polymerized in an N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) solution with 2,2‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) initiation. The homopolymer of MMBL was soluble in DMF and acetonitrile. MMBL was homopolymerized without competing depolymerization from 50 to 70 °C. The rate of polymerization (Rp) for MMBL followed the kinetic expression Rp = [AIBN]0.54[MMBL]1.04. The overall activation energy was calculated to be 86.9 kJ/mol, kp/kt1/2 was equal to 0.050 (where kp is the rate constant for propagation and kt is the rate constant for termination), and the rate of initiation was 2.17 × 10?8 mol L?1 s?1. The free energy of activation, the activation enthalpy, and the activation entropy were 106.0, 84.1, and 0.0658 kJ mol?1, respectively, for homopolymerization. The initiation efficiency was approximately 1. Styrene and MMBL were copolymerized in DMF solutions at 60 °C with AIBN as the initiator. The reactivity ratios (r1 = 0.22 and r2 = 0.73) for this copolymerization were calculated with the Kelen–Tudos method. The general reactivity parameter Q and the polarity parameter e for MMBL were calculated to be 1.54 and 0.55, respectively. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The article describes unprecedented nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization of methyl and phenyl vinyl ketone (MVK and PVK) using a sterically highly hindered alkoxyamine as initiator/regulator. It is shown that controlled polymerization of PVK is far more difficult to achieve than controlled MVK polymerization. Whereas for MVK high conversion resulting in polyvinyl ketone with low polydispersity index is readily obtained, the PVK polymerization provides good results only in the presence of free nitroxide and styrene as additives. Vinyl ketone polymerizations are analyzed by ESI mass spectrometry. These MS studies provide insights into the problems associated with the controlled nitroxide‐mediated polymerization of PVK. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An amphiphilic block copolymer of poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PVP‐b‐PCL) was synthesized by a combination of cobalt‐mediated radical polymerization (CMRP) and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). The micellar characteristics of this copolymer were subsequently investigated. PVP (Mn = 11,400, Mw/Mn = 1.32) was synthesized at 20 °C via CMRP using a molar ratio of [VP]0/[V‐70]0/[Co]0 = 150/8/1. The PVP was then reacted with 2,2′‐azobis[2‐methyl‐N‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)propionamide] (VA‐086) to modify its cobalt complex chain end to a hydroxyl group. The cobalt (Co) content in the resulting PVP‐OH was 1.2 ppm, indicating that all of the covalent Co? C bonds were cleaved and reacted with VA‐086, and that the separated cobalt complexes were successfully removed. The ROP of CL was subsequently carried out using the produced PVP‐OH as a macroinitiator at 110 °C. The GPC trace of PVP‐b‐PCL was monomodal without any tailing caused by the residual PVP‐OH, indicating that the initiation efficiency was very high. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of PVP‐b‐PCL (Mn = 18,000, Mw/Mn = 1.35) was 0.015 mg/mL. The PVP‐b‐PCL micelles were spherical in shape with an average diameter of 105 nm. The nanosized PVP‐b‐PCL micelles show promise as novel drug carriers in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2‐Phenyl‐2‐[(2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidino)oxy] ethyl 2‐bromopropanoate was successfully used as an initiator in consecutive living radical polymerization routes, such as metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization and nitroxide‐mediated free‐radical polymerization, to produce various types of acrylonitrile‐containing polymers, such as styrene–acrylonitrile, polystyrene‐b‐styrene–acrylonitrile, polystyrene‐b‐poly(n‐butyl acrylate)‐b‐polyacrylonitrile, and polystyrene‐b‐polyacrylonitrile. The kinetic data were obtained for the metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization of styrene–acrylonitrile. All the obtained polymers were characterized with 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of poly(benzyl methacrylate) (PBzMA) by nitroxide‐mediated polymerization with a small fraction of fluorescent, controlling comonomer, 9‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐9H‐carbazole (VBK, 2–11 mol % in the feed), was studied along with the resulting copolymers' LCST phase behavior in the ionic liquid (IL) 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethane sulfone)imide. The effectiveness of VBK as a controlling comonomer was demonstrated by a dramatic decrease in the product of average propagation rate constant and average equilibrium constant, <kp><K>, compared to BzMA polymerizations with styrene as comonomer. Linear molecular weight increase with conversion (up to ~40% conversion), with polydispersities of about 1.34–1.42, and successful chain extensions indicated the copolymerizations were relatively well controlled. The incorporation of fluorescent and solvatophobic VBK units in the BzMA/VBK copolymers not only affected transition temperature and reversibility of the LCST‐type phase separation in the IL, but also led to about a fivefold phase separation‐triggered fluorescent enhancements, likely due to enhanced fluorescence resonance energy transfer from BzMA to VBK being in close proximity during aggregation. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 4‐acryloylmorpholine/4‐acryloylpiperidine statistical copolymers were synthesized by nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP) with BlocBuilder unimolecular initiator in dimethylformamide solution at 120 °C. The copolymers had narrow molecular weight distributions (dispersity ? = 1.25–1.35, number average molecular weights M n = 8.5–13.7 kg mol?1). The copolymer microstructure was essentially statistical (reactivity ratios r 4AP = 0.81 ± 0.73, r 4AM = 0.73 ± 0.68 based on non‐linear fitting of the Mayo‐Lewis equation). Cloud point temperatures (CPT) in aqueous media were tuned from 11 °C to 92 °C, merely by adjusting the initial monomer composition. Using NMP permitted sharper control of the CPT transitions, compared to the similar copolymer made using conventional radical polymerization. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Statistical copolymers of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 2‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEA) were synthesized at 50 °C by free‐radical copolymerization in bulk and in a 3 mol L?1 N,N′‐dimethylformamide solution with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. The solvent effect on the apparent monomer reactivity ratios was attributed to the different aggregation states of HEMA monomer in the different solvents. The copolymers obtained were water‐insoluble at a neutral pH but soluble in an acidic medium when the molar fraction of the DEA content was higher than 0.5. The quaternization of DEA residues increased the hydrophilic character of the copolymers, and they became water‐soluble at a neutral pH when the HEMA content was lower than 0.25. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present work describes a combination of microwave irradiation as a heating source and water as a solvent for carrying out a living/controlled polymerization of acrylamide. Reasonable results were obtained for a nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMP) with a combination of a conventional hydrosoluble radical initiator and a β‐phosphonylated nitroxide. The microwave enhancement of the polymerization was found to depend on the mode of irradiation, i.e., either a dynamic (DYN) mode or an pulse (SPS) mode. The former mode corresponded to a dynamic control of the temperature by way of a high initial microwave power, and in this case, no specific microwave effect was observed. On the other hand, in the SPS mode, which is a pulsed power mode, the result showed a strong acceleration of the polymerization process (>50 times) without the loss of the living/controlled polymerization characteristics, which is relevant with a reinitiation of the polyacrylamide macroinitiator even after 100% of conversion. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nitroxide‐mediated controlled radical polymerization of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) is achieved using the copolymerization method with a small initial concentration of acrylonitrile (AN, 5–16 mol%)) or styrene (S, 5–10 mol%). The polymerization is mediated by Ntert‐butyl‐N‐(1‐diethyl phosphono‐2,2‐dimethyl propyl) nitroxide (SG1)‐based BlocBuilder unimolecular alkoxyamine initiator modified with an N‐succinimidyl ester group (N‐hydroxysuccinimide‐BlocBuilder). As little as 5% molar feed of acrylonitrile results in a controlled polymerization, as evidenced by a linear increase in number average molecular weight M n with conversion and dispersities (? ) as low as 1.30 at 80% conversion in N ,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) at 85 °C. With S as the controlling comonomer, higher initial S composition (≈10 mol%) is required to maintain the controlled copolymerization. Poly(HEMA‐ran‐AN)s with M n ranging from 5 to 20 kg mol?1 are efficiently chain extended using n‐butyl methacrylate/styrene mixtures at 90.0 °C in DMF, thereby showing a route to HEMA‐based amphiphilic block copolymers via nitroxide‐mediated polymerization.

Amphiphilic polymer networks consisting of hydrophilic poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) and hydrophobic polyisobutylene (PIB) chains were synthesized from a cationic copolymer of isobutylene (IB) and 3‐isopropenyl‐α,α‐dimethylbenzyl isocyanate (IDI) prepared at ?50 °C in dichloromethane in conjunction with SnCl4. The isocyanate groups of this random copolymer, PIB(NCO)n, were subsequently transformed in situ to methacrylate (MA) groups in the dibutyltin dilaurate‐catalyzed reaction with 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) at 30 °C. The resulting PIB(MA)n with number–average molecular weight 8200 and average functionality Fn ~ 4 per chain was in situ copolymerized radically with HEMA at 70 °C, giving rise to the amphiphilic networks containing 41 and 67 mol % HEMA. PHEMA–PIB network containing 43 mol % HEMA was also prepared by radical copolymerization of PIB(MA)n precursor with HEMA using sequential synthesis. An amphiphilic nature of the resulting networks was proved by swelling in both water and n‐heptane. PIB(NCO)n and PIB(MA)n were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, SEC and the latter also by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Solid state 13C NMR spectroscopy was used for characterization of the resulting PHEMA–PIB networks. Whereas single glass‐transition temperature, Tg = ?67.4 °C, was observed for the rubbery crosslinked PIB prepared by reaction of PIB(NCO)n with water, the PHEMA–PIB networks containing 67 and 41 mol % HEMA showed two Tg's: ?70.4 and 102.7 °C, and ?63 and 107.2 °C, respectively. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymeric microspheres were prepared from a Merrifield resin via nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization. Polystyrene, poly(acetoxystyrene), and poly[styrene‐b‐(methyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene)], poly(acetoxystyrene‐b‐styrene), and poly(styrene‐co‐2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) copolymers were demonstrated to graft onto 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy nitroxide bound Merrifield resins. The polymerization control was enhanced both on the surface and in solution by the addition of sacrificial nitroxide. The significant increase in the particle diameter (more than a fivefold volume increase for polystyrene brushes) showed that polymer growth was not only on the surface but also within the particles, and this diameter increase could be adjusted through changes in the molecular weight of the polymers. The microspheres were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, particle size analysis, and optical microscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The pyridyl alkoxyamine, which is composed of the 1‐phenylethyl radical and a pyridyl nitroxide fragments, displays protonation‐controlled C? ON bond homolysis. Its dissociation rate constant kd value is approximately halved at 100 °C in tert‐butyl benzene when it is protonated by one equivalent of trifluoroacetic acid. Moreover, the bulk polymerization of styrene at 125 °C is performed with a good control over the molecular weight and the dispersity when initiated with this alkoxyamine under its basic and acidic forms but the protonation has induced a strong decreased polymerization rate. In contrast, in the case of n‐butyl acrylate, the control over the polymerization is lost for the protonated pyridyl alkoxyamine because the pyridyl nitroxide is less thermally stable under its acidic form. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(isoprene) (PEO‐b‐PI) diblock copolymers were prepared by nitroxide‐mediated polymerization of isoprene from alkoxyamine‐terminal poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). PEO monomethyl ether (Mn ≈ 5200 g/mol) was functionalized by esterification with 2‐bromopropionyl bromide with subsequent copper‐mediated replacement of the terminal bromine with 2,2,5‐trimethyl‐4‐phenyl‐3‐azahexane‐3‐nitroxide. The resulting PEO‐alkoxyamine macroinitiator was used to initiate polymerization of isoprene in bulk and in solution at 125 °C to yield PEO‐b‐PI block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.1). Polymerizations were first order in isoprene through 35% conversion. Micellar aggregates of PEO‐b‐PI in aqueous solution were crosslinked by treatment with a water‐soluble redox initiating system, and persistent micellar structures were observed in the dry state by AFM. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
