A novel donor–acceptor ( D–A ) copolymer comprising of weak electron donating BDT moiety and strong 9‐(2‐octyldodecyl)?8H‐pyrrolo[3,4‐b] bisthieno[2,3‐f:3',2'‐h] quinoxaline‐8,10(9H)‐dione (PTQD) unit denoted as P(PTQD‐BDT) was synthesized as donor material for polymer solar cells. P(PTQD‐BDT) shows a broad visible‐near‐infrared absorption band with an optical bandgap of 1.74 eV and possesses a relatively low‐lying HOMO level at ?5.28 eV. Bulk‐heterojunction polymer solar cell with the optimized blend of 1:2 (weight ratio) P(PTQD‐BDT):PC71BM (processed with chloroform) shows an open circuit voltage of 0.92 V, a short circuit current density of 7.84 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.50, achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.61%. The PCE has been further improved to 5.55 % (Jsc = 10.34 mA/cm2, Voc = 0.88V and FF = 0.61), when 3% v ol 1,8‐diio‐dooctane (DIO) was used as solvent additive for the processing of P(PTQD‐BDT):PC71BM blended film. The enhancement in Jsc is as a result of the appropriate morphology and efficient exciton dissociation into free charge carrier. The increase in PCE has been attributed to the favorable nanoscale morphology for efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport (reduction in the electron to hole mobility ratio). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel D–A1–D–A2 copolymer denoted as P1 containing two electron withdrawing units based on benzothiadiazole (BT) and 9‐(2‐octyldodecyl)?8H‐pyrrolo[3,4‐b] bisthieno[2,3‐f:3′,2′‐h]quinoxaline‐8,10(9H)–dione (PTQD) units was synthesized and characterized. The resulting copolymer exhibits a broad‐absorption spectrum, relatively deep lying HOMO energy level (?5.44 eV) and narrow optical bandgap (1.50 eV). Bulk heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on P1 as donor and PC71BM as acceptor with optimized donor to acceptor weight ratio of 1:2 and processed with DIO/CB solvent showed good photovoltaic performance with power conversion efficiency of 6.21% which is higher than that of the device processed without solvent additive (4.40%). The absorption and morphology investigations of the active layers indicated that structural and morphological changes were induced by the solvent additive. This higher power conversion efficiency could be mainly attributed to the absorption enhancement and improved charge transported in the active layer induced by the better nanoscale morphology of the active layer. This study demonstrated that a copolymer with two different acceptor moieties in the backbone may be promising candidate as donor copolymer for solution processed BHJ PSCs. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A n‐type conjugated polymer containing naphthalene diimide (NDI) and 1,3,4‐thiadiazole (TZ) moieties, named PNTZ, has been synthesized and applied for all‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs). By the incorporation of TZ unit into the polymer main chains, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level of this polymer has been adjusted effectively. In addition, the electron‐acceptor PNTZ shows a broad absorption spectrum in the range of 300–700 nm, and possesses complementary absorption spectrum with the electron‐donor PTB7‐Th. On the basis of PNTZ as the acceptor and PTB7‐Th as the donor, the all‐PSCs are fabricated. After optimization, the well blend morphologies with a continuous D/A interpenetrating network are observed and the best all‐PSC device exhibits a power conversion efficiency of 4.35% with a high short‐circuit current density of 13.26 mA cm?2. This research demonstrates that the TZ‐containing polymer PNTZ is a promising non‐fullerene acceptor for high efficiency all‐PSCs. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. We have designed and synthesized two wide bandgap new donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers consisting of the same alkylthiazole-substituted benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDTTz) donor unit and but different acceptor units, i.e., thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (TTZ) ( P122 ) and 1,3,-4 thiadiazole (TDz) ( P123 ) and investigated their optical and electrochemical properties. We have employed these copolymers as donor and fullerene (PC 71 BM) and narrow bandgap non-fullerene (Y6) as acceptor, to fabricate binary and ternary bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells (PSCs). The overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of optimized binary bulk heterojunction PSCs based on P122 :Y6 and P123 :Y6 is 12.60% and 13.16%, respectively. The higher PCE for PSCs based on P123 than P122 counterparts may be associated with the broader absorption profile of the P123 and more charge carrier mobilities than that for the P122 active layer. With the incorporation of small amount of PC71BM into either P122 :Y6 or P123 :Y6 binary blend, the corresponding ternary PSCs showed an overall PCE of 14.89% and 15.52%, respectively, which is higher than the binary counterparts using either Y6 or PC71BM as acceptor. Incorporating the PC71BM in the binary host blend increases the absorption in the 300–500 nm wavelength region, generating more excitons in the active ternary layer and helping to dissociate the excitons into free charge carriers more effectively. The more appropriate nanoscale phase separation in the active ternary layer than the binary counterpart may be one of the reasons for higher PCE.  相似文献

Two D–π–A copolymers, based on the benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]‐dithiophene (BDT) as a donor unit and benzo‐quinoxaline (BQ) or pyrido‐quinoxaline (PQ) analog as an acceptor (PBDT‐TBQ and PBDT‐TPQ), were designed and synthesized as a p‐type material for bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaic cells. When compared with the PBDT‐TBQ polymer, PBDT‐TPQ exhibits stronger intramolecular charge transfer, showing a broad absorption coverage at the red region and narrower optical bandgap of 1.69 eV with a relatively low‐lying HOMO energy level at ?5.24 eV. The experimental data show that the exciton dissociation efficiency of PBDT‐TPQ:PC71BM blend is better than that in the PBDT‐TBQ:PC71BM blend, which can explain that the IPCE spectra of the PBDT‐TPQ‐based solar cell were higher than that of the PBDT‐TBQ‐based solar cell. The maximum efficiency of PBDT‐TPQ‐based device reaches 4.40% which is much higher than 2.45% of PBDT‐TBQ, indicating that PQ unit is a promising electron‐acceptor moiety for BHJ solar cells. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new acceptor–donor–acceptor (A–D–A) small molecule based on benzodithiophene (BDT) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) is synthesized via a Stille cross‐coupling reaction. A highly conjugated selenophene‐based side group is incorporated into each BDT unit to generate a 2D soluble small molecule (SeBDT‐DPP). SeBDT‐DPP thin films produce two distinct absorption peaks. The shorter wavelength absorption (400 nm) is attributed to the BDT units containing conjugated selenophene‐based side groups, and the longer wavelength band is due to the intramolecular charge transfer between the BDT donor and the DPP acceptor. SeBDT‐DPP thin films can harvest a broad solar spectrum covering the range 350–750 nm and have a low bandgap energy of 1.63 eV. Solution‐processed field‐effect transistors fabricated with this small molecule exhibit p‐type organic thin film transistor characteristics, and the field‐effect mobility of a SeBDT‐DPP device is measured to be 2.3 × 10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1. A small molecule solar cell device is prepared by using SeBDT‐DPP as the active layer is found to exhibit a power conversion efficiency of 5.04% under AM 1.5 G (100 mW cm−2) conditions.

Two conjugated copolymers PADT‐DPP and PADT‐FDPP based on anthradithiophene and diketopyrrolopyrrole, with thiophene and furan as the π‐conjugated bridge, respectively, were successfully synthesized and characterized. The number‐averaged molecular weights of the two polymers are 38.7 and 30.2 kg/mol, respectively. Polymers PADT‐DPP and PADT‐FDPP exhibit broad absorption bands and their optical band gaps are 1.44 and 1.50 eV, respectively. The highest occupied molecular orbital energy level of PADT‐DPP is located at ?5.03 eV while that of PADT‐FDPP is at ?5.16 eV. In field‐effect transistors, PADT‐DPP and PADT‐FDPP displayed hole mobilities of 4.7 × 10?3 and 2.7 × 10?3 cm2/(V s), respectively. In polymer solar cells, PADT‐DPP and PADT‐FDPP showed power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.44% and 0.29%, respectively. Atomic force microscopy revealed that the poor efficiency of PADT‐FDPP should be related to the large two‐phase separation in its active layer. If 1,8‐diiodooctane (DIO) was used as the solvent additive, the PCE of PADT‐DPP remained almost unchanged due to very limited morphology variation. However, the addition of DIO could remarkably elevate the PCE of PADT‐FDPP to 2.62% because of the greatly improved morphology. Our results suggest that the anthradithiophene as an electron‐donating polycyclic system is useful to construct new D–A alternating copolymers for efficient polymer solar cells. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel class of thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene (TT) and isoindigo based copolymers were synthesized and evaluated as electron donor and hole transport materials in bulk‐heterojunction polymer solar cells (BHJ PSCs). These π‐conjugated donor‐acceptor polymers were derived from fused TT and isoindigo structures bridged by thiophene units. The band‐gaps and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels of the polymers were tuned using different conjugating lengths of thiophene units on the main chains, providing band‐gaps from 1.55 to 1.91 eV and HOMO levels from ?5.34 to ?5.71 eV, respectively. The corresponding lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels were appropriately adjusted with the isoindigo units. Conventional BHJ PSCs (ITO/PEDOT:PSS/active layer/interlayer/Al) with an active layer composed of the polymer and PC71BM were fabricated for evaluation. Power conversion efficiency from a low of 1.25% to a high of 4.69% were achieved with the best performing device provided by the D?π?A polymer with a relatively board absorption spectrum, high absorption coefficient, and more uniform blend morphology. These results demonstrate the potential of this class of thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene‐isoindigo‐based polymers as efficient electron donor and hole transport polymers for BHJ PSCs. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The emergence of non-fullerene acceptors(NFA) offers a promising opportunity to develop high-performance donor/acceptor pairs with high power conversion efficiency,as NFAs offer tunable energy levels, broad absorption and suitable aggregation property. In order to enhance light-harvesting capability of active layers,we choose a wide bandgap polymer PTQ10 as the donor to blend with a narrow bandgap NFAY6 as the acceptor. In comparison with PTQ10:IDIC blend,~130 nm red-shifted absorption spectrum is observed in the PTQ10:Y6 blend, which potentially enhance the short-circuit current density(Jsc) for the PSCs.In addition, the optimal PTQ10:Y6 blend shows higher photoluminescence quenching efficiency and more efficient charge separation, higher charge mobilities,as well as weaker bimolecular recombination over the PTQ10:IDIC blend, which leads to an outstanding power conversion efficiency(PCE) of 16.53%,with a notable Jsc of 26.65 mA cm^-2 and fill factor(FF) of 0.751.  相似文献

Two novel alternating π‐conjugated copolymers, poly[2,8‐(6,6′,12,12′‐tetraoctyl‐6,12‐dihydroindeno‐[1,2b]fluorene‐ alt‐5(1‐(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)pyrrole) ( P1 ) and poly[2,8‐(6,6′,12,12′‐tetraoctyl‐6,12‐dihydroindeno‐[1,2b]fluorene‐ alt‐5(1‐(p‐octylphenyl)‐2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)pyrrole) ( P2 ), were synthesized via the Suzuki coupling method and their optoelectronic properties were investigated. The resulting polymers P1 and P2 were completely soluble in various common organic solvents and their weight‐average molecular weights (Mw) were 5.66 × 104 (polydispersity: 1.97) and 2.13× 104 (polydispersity: 1.54), respectively. Bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells were fabricated in ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer:PC70BM(1:5)/TiOx/Al configurations. The BHJ solar cell with P1 :PC70BM (1:5) has a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.12% (Jsc= 3.39 mA/cm2, Voc= 0.67 V, FF = 49.31%), measured using AM 1.5 G solar simulator at 100 mW/cm2 light illumination. We fabricated polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs) in ITO/PEDOT:PSS/emitting polymer:polyethylene glycol (PEG)/Ba/Al configurations. The electroluminescence (EL) maxima of the fabricated PLEDs varied from 526 nm to 556 nm depending on the ratio of the polymer to PEG. The turn‐on voltages of the PLEDs were in the range of 3–8 V depending on the ratio of the polymer to PEG, and the maximum brightness and luminance efficiency were 2103 cd/m2 and 0.37 cd/A at 12 V, respectively. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Porphyrin, despite chosen by Nature as light harvesting units, hasn't revealed its full potentials as a structural unit in porphyrin‐incorporated polymers (PPors). A novel PPor was synthesized to investigate the origins of the low performances of PPor‐based polymer solar cells (PSCs). The polymer features broad absorption in the blue‐light region, because the diindenothieno[2,3‐b]thiophene (DITT) unit extended the conjugation in the polymer backbone. PPor‐DITT/PC71BM based PSCs have a high Voc (0.79 V). Their low Jsc and fill factor (FF) were attributed to the un‐optimized morphology, as indicated by the photoluminescence quenching and atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments. Using PPor‐DITT as a blue‐light harvesting dopant in an amorphous host leverage the strong 400–550 nm absorption of PPor‐DITT and circumvent the difficulties in reaching optimized morphology in the PPor/PCBM thin films. An addition of 2 wt % of PPor‐DITT in ternary‐blend PSCs resulted in a 10 % increase of external quantum efficiency (EQE) in the blue‐light region. However, in a crystalline host, the dopant decreased the crystallinity of the host and led to large drops in FF and power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). The study provides an alternative route and expands the application of PPors in PSCs as a blue‐light harvester in ternary‐blend PSCs using amorphous polymers as host. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two n‐type conjugated D‐A copolymers, P(TVT‐NDI) and P(FVF‐NDI) with thienylene‐vinylene‐thienylene (TVT) or furanylene‐vinylene‐furanylene (FVF) as donor (D) units and naphthalene diimide (NDI) as the acceptor (A) units, were synthesized by the Stille coupling copolymerization. The two polymers possess good solubility, high thermal stability, and broad absorption bands with absorption edges at 866 nm for P(TVT‐NDI) and 886 nm for P(FVF‐NDI) . The LUMO energy levels of P(TVT‐NDI) and P(FVF‐NDI) are ?3.80 eV and ?3.76 eV respectively, so the two polymers are suitable for the application as acceptor in blending with most polymer donor in PSCs based on the energy level matching point of view. All polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs) were fabricated with P(TVT‐NDI) or P(FVF‐NDI) as acceptor and medium bandgap polymer J51 as donor for investigating the photovoltaic performance of the two n‐type conjugated polymer acceptors. And higher power conversion efficiency of 6.43% for P(TVT‐NDI) and 5.21% for P(FVF‐NDI) was obtained. The results indicate that arylenevinylenearylene–naphthalene diimide copolymer are promising polymer acceptor for all–PSCs. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated copolymers are one of known classes of organic optoelectronic materials and have been well developed. However, less attention has been paid on acceptor–acceptor (A–A) conjugated analogs. In this work, two types of A–A conjugated copolymers, namely P1‐Cn and P2‐Cn (n is the carbon number of their alkyl side chains), were designed and synthesized based on perylenediimide ( PDI ) and 2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole ( BT ). Different from P1‐Cn , P2‐Cn polymers have additional acetylene π‐spacers between PDI and BT and thus hold a more planar backbone configuration. Property studies revealed that P2‐Cn polymers possess a much red‐extended UV–vis absorption spectrum, stronger π–π interchain interactions, and one‐order larger electron mobility in their neat film state than P1‐Cn . However, all‐polymer solar cells using P1‐Cn as acceptor component and poly(3‐hexyl thiophene) or poly(2,7‐(9,9‐didodecyl‐fluoene)‐alt?5,5′‐(4,7‐dithienyl‐2‐yl‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole) as donor component exhibited much better performance than those based on P2‐Cn . Apart from their backbone chemical structure, the side chains were found to have little influence on the photophysical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties for both P1‐Cn and P2‐Cn polymers. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three classes of quinoxaline (Qx)‐based donor–acceptor (D–A)‐type copolymers, poly[thiophene‐2,5‐diyl‐alt‐2,3‐bis(4‐(octyloxy)phenyl‐quinoxaline‐5,8‐diyl] P(T‐Qx), poly{4,8‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl‐alt‐2,3‐bis(4‐(octyloxy)phenyl‐quinoxaline‐5,8‐diy} P(BDT‐Qx), and poly{4,8‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl‐alt‐(5′,8′‐di‐2‐thienyl‐2,3‐bis(4‐octyloxyl)phenyl)‐quinoxaline‐5,5‐diyl} P(BDT‐DTQx), were synthesized via a Stille coupling reaction. The Qx unit was functionalized at the 2‐ and 3‐positions with 4‐(octyloxy)phenyl to provide good solubility and to reduce the steric hindrance. The absorption spectra of the Qx‐containing copolymers could be tuned by incorporating three different electron‐donating moieties. Among these, P(T‐Qx) acted as an electron donor and yielded a high‐performance solar cell by assuming a rigid planar structure, confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry, UV–vis spectrophotometer, and density functional theory study. In contrast, the P(BDT‐Qx)‐based solar cell displayed a lower power conversion efficiency (PCE) with a large torsional angle (34.7°) between the BDT and Qx units. The BDT unit in the P(BDT‐DTQx) backbone acted as a linker and interfered with the formation of charge complexes or quinoidal electronic conformations in a polymer chain. The PCEs of the polymer solar cells based on these copolymers, in combination with [6,6]‐phenyl C70 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM), were 3.3% [P(T‐Qx)], 1.9% [P(BDT‐Qx)], and 2.3% [P(BDT‐DTQx)], respectively, under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm?2). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two novel low band gap conjugated copolymers containing porphyrins, thiophenes, and 2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole ( BTZ ) moieties were synthesized and applied in bulk heterojunction solar cells. The thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the two copolymers were examined to investigate the effect of the introduction of BTZ moiety in the backbone of the porphyrin polymers. The copolymers exhibited good thermal stability and film‐forming ability. The absorption spectra indicated that the BTZ moiety has significant influence on the UV–visible region spectra of the copolymers: with increasing the molar amount of BTZ moieties in conjugated main chain, the absorption in the range of 450–700 nm is largely broadened and red‐shifted compared to the similar polymers without BTZ moiety, and the optical band gaps of copolymers were narrowed to ~1.50 eV. The photoluminescence spectra showed that there is effective charge transfer in the whole conjugated main chain. Cyclic voltammetry displayed that the band gaps were reduced effectively by the introduction of the BTZ moieties. The bulk heterojunction solar cells were fabricated based on the blend of the copolymers and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) in a 1:2 weight ratio. The maximum power conversion efficiency of 0.91% was obtained by using P2 as the electron donor under the illumination of AM 1.5, 100 mW/cm2. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Donor-acceptor (D-A) type fully conjugated block copolymer systems have been rarely reported due to the challenges in synthetic approaches to prepare well-defined low-polydispersity products. In this work, fully conjugated block copolymers are synthesized in a one-pot reaction through Stille coupling polycondensation, by utilizing the end-functional polymer copolymerization method. End-functional P3HT are copolymerized with AA (2,7-dibromo-9-(heptadecan-9-yl)-9H-carbazole) and BB (4,7-bis(5-(trimethylstannyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole, TBT) type monomers, respectively. The orthogonal solubility between the very soluble P3HT donor and the insoluble PCDTBT acceptor block improves the purity of block copolymers as well as distinct nano-scale phase-separation compared with other reports on miscibility of donor and acceptor polymer block. Further purification via preparative GPC is carried out to remove the excess of unreacted P3HT and free PCDTBT as well as to achieve low polydispersity of block copolymers. The chemical structure of the P3HT-b-PCDTBT block copolymers are verified via 1H-NMR, and further confirmed by FTIR spectra. The block copolymer shows broad absorption and moderate optical band gap of 1.8 eV. Furthermore, the fully conjugated block copolymer films exhibit significant fine structures, much smoother film morphology compared to P3HT/PCDTBT polymer blends. By adding a small amount of block copolymer P3HT-b-PCDTBT as a compatibilizer into the bulk-heterojunction of P3HT:PC61BM blends, polymer solar cells with an 8% increase of short circuit current (J sc and 10% increase of power conversion efficiency (PCE) are achieved owing to the improvement of the active-layer film morphology. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on donor-acceptor type fully conjugated block copolymer as an effective ternary additive in polymer: fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells.  相似文献

Two donor/acceptor (D/A)‐based benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐alt‐2,3‐biphenyl quinoxaline copolymers of P 1 and P 2 were synthesized pending different functional groups (thiophene or triphenylamine) in the 4‐positions of phenyl rings. Their thermal, photophysical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties, as well as morphology of their blending films were investigated. The poly(4,8‐bis((2‐ethyl‐hexyl)oxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b'] dithiophene)‐alt‐(2,3‐bis(4′‐bis(N,N‐bis(4‐(octyloxy) phenylamino)‐ 1,1′‐biphen‐4‐yl)quinoxaline) ( P 2) exhibited better photovoltaic performance than poly(4,8‐bis((2‐ethylhexyl)oxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b'] dithiophene)‐alt‐(2,3‐bis(4‐(5‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl)phenyl)quinoxaline) ( P 1) in the bulk‐heterojunction polymer solar cells with a configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymers: [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM)/LiF/Al. A power conversion efficiency of 3.43%, an open‐circuit voltage of 0.80 V, and a short‐circuit current of 9.20 mA cm?2 were achieved in the P 2‐based cell under the illumination of AM 1.5, 100 mW cm?2. Importantly, this power conversion efficiency level is 2.29 times higher than that in the P 1‐based cell. Our work indicated that incorporating triphenylamine pendant in the D/A‐based polymers can greatly improved the photovoltaic properties for its resulting polymers.  相似文献

A series of low‐band‐gap (LBG) donor–accepor conjugated main‐chain copolymers ( P1 – P4 ) containing planar 2,7‐carbazole as electron donors and bithiazole units (4,4′‐dihexyl‐2,2′‐bithiazole and 4,4′‐dihexyl‐5,5′‐di(thiophen‐2‐yl)‐2,2′‐bithiazole) as electron acceptors were synthesized and studied for the applications in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. The effects of electron deficient bithiazole units on the thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic (PV) properties of these LBG copolymers were investigated. Absorption spectra revealed that polymers P1 – P4 exhibited broad absorption bands in UV and visible regions from 300 to 600 nm with optical band gaps in the range of 1.93–1.99 eV, which overlapped with the major region of the solar emission spectrum. Moreover, carbazole‐based polymers P1 – P4 showed low values of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels, which provided good air stability and high open circuit voltages (Voc) in the PV applications. The BHJ PV devices were fabricated using polymers P1 – P4 as electron donors and (6,6)‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) or (6,6)‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as electron acceptors in different weight ratios. The PV device bearing an active layer of polymer blend P4:PC71BM (1:1.5 w/w) showed the best power conversion efficiency value of 1.01% with a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 4.83 mA/cm2, a fill factor (FF) of 35%, and Voc = 0.60 V under 100 mW/cm2 of AM 1.5 white‐light illumination. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A “zigzag” naphthodithiophene‐based copolymer, poly[4,9‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)naphtho[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐1,3‐(5‐heptadecan‐9‐yl)‐4H‐thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione] (P1) is synthesized and its properties are compared to “linear” naphthodithiophene‐based copolymer, poly[4,9‐bis(2‐ethylhexyloxy)naphtho[2,3‐b:6,7‐d′]dithiophene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐1,3‐(5‐heptadecan‐9‐yl)‐4H‐thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione] (P2). The field‐effect carrier mobilities and the optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of the copolymers are systematically investigated. The results suggest that the backbone of the copolymer structure significantly influences the band gap, electronic energy levels, carrier mobilities, and photovoltaic properties of the resultant thin films. In this work, the zigzag naphtho[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene‐based copolymer displays a good hole mobility and a high open‐circuit voltage; however, polymer solar cells in which the linear naphtho[2,3‐b;6,7‐d′]dithiophene‐based copolymer is used as the electron donor material perform better than the cells prepared using the zigzag naphtho[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene‐based copolymer. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
