The use of amphiphilic triblock copolymers bearing a reactive alkoxysilane middle block as polymeric stabilizers is reported in this work. A series of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate‐b‐(3‐trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate‐b‐benzyl methacrylate (PEGMA‐b‐MPS‐b‐BzMA) triblock copolymers were prepared by RAFT solution polymerization and polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA), respectively, where the various block lengths and overall composition were varied. The copolymers prepared by solution polymerization were employed as oil‐in‐water stabilizers where upon application of a catalyst, the 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (MPS) block at the droplet interface was crosslinked to yield capsule‐like structures. The effectiveness of interfacial crosslinking was validated by dynamic light scattering and electron microscopy. In situ self‐assembly by the PISA method resulted in spherical nanoparticles of controllable size that were readily crosslinked by addition of base, with significant enhancement of colloidal stability. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly of block copolymer through dispersion RAFT polymerization has been demonstrated to be a valid method to prepare block copolymer nano‐objects. However, volatile solvents are generally involved in this preparation. Herein, the in situ synthesis of block copolymer nano‐objects of poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐polystyrene (PEG‐b‐PS) in the ionic liquid of 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIN][PF6]) through the macro‐RAFT agent mediated dispersion polymerization is investigated. It is found that the dispersion RAFT polymerization of styrene in the ionic liquid of [BMIN][PF6] runs faster than that in the alcoholic solvent, and the dispersion RAFT polymerization in the ionic liquid affords good control over the molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of the PEG‐b‐PS diblock copolymer. The morphology of the in situ synthesized PEG‐b‐PS diblock copolymer nano‐objects, e.g., nanospheres and vesicles, in the ionic liquid is dependent on the polymerization degree of the solvophobic block and the concentration of the fed monomer, which is somewhat similar to those in alcoholic solvent. It is anticipated that the dispersion RAFT polymerization in ionic liquid broads a new way to prepare block copolymer nano‐objects. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Well‐defined, high‐density poly(2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate) [poly(MEO2MA)] brushes were fabricated through a reliable strategy by the combination of self‐assembly of a monolayer of 3‐aminopropyltrimethoxy silane on silicon surface to immobilize 4‐cyano‐4‐(dodecylsulfanylthiocarbonyl)sulfanyl pentanoic acid chain transfer agent and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer‐mediated polymerization of MEO2MA. The whole fabrication process of the poly(MEO2MA) brushes was followed by water contact angle, grazing angle‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Characterization of the poly(MEO2MA) brushes, such as molecular weight and thickness determination, were measured by gel permeation chromatography and ellipsometry, and the grafting density was estimated. The temperature‐responsive property of the poly(MEO2MA) brushes was further investigated and the result verified the brush‐to‐mushroom phase transition of the poly(MEO2MA) chains from low to high temperature. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA) has become the preferred method of preparing self‐assembled nano‐objects based on amphiphilic block copolymers. The PISA methodology has also been extended to the realization of colloidal nanocomposites, such as polymer–silica hybrid particles. In this work, we compare two methods to prepare nanoparticles based on self‐assembly of block copolymers bearing a core‐forming block with a reactive alkoxysilane moiety (3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate, MPS), namely (i) RAFT emulsion polymerization using a hydrophilic macroRAFT agent and (ii) solution‐phase self‐assembly upon slow addition of a selective solvent. Emulsion polymerization under both ab initio and seeded conditions were studied, as well the use of different initiating systems. Effective and reproducible chain extension (and hence PISA) of MPS via thermally initiated RAFT emulsion polymerization was compromised due to the hydrolysis and polycondensation of MPS occurring under the reaction conditions employed. A more successful approach to block copolymer self‐assembly was achieved via polymerization in a good solvent for both blocks (1,4‐dioxane) followed by the slow addition of water, yielding spherical nanoparticles that increased in size as the length of the solvophobic block was increased. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, we showed that the self‐assembly behavior of the macro‐chain transfer agent P(DMA69b‐NIPAM60)‐S? (C?S)? S? C12H25 [dodecyltrithiocarbonate (DTTC)] was very different to P(DMA68b‐NIPAM62)‐S? (C?S)? S? C4H9 [butyltrithiocarbonate (BTTC)], resulting in very different water‐based nanoreactor polymerizations. The DTTC diblock formed small aggregates below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), which increased slightly above the LCST. This is in contrast to the BTTC diblock, in which unimers existed below the LCST and large aggregates of core–shell nanoreactors were present above the LCST. Polymerization of styrene in the DTTC diblock nanoreactors afforded fast rates of polymerization with the production of narrow molecular weight and particle size distributions. We found a direct relationship between the size and the targeted molecular weight; the greater the targeted the molecular weight the greater the particle size. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, successful synthesis of polymer nanorattles containing titanium dioxide pigment particles in the centers of air voids is reported. The method used amphiphilic macro‐RAFT copolymers as stabilizers for pigment dispersion and the subsequent encapsulation of the pigment with polymer. The particles were first encapsulated by a water swellable hydrophilic layer, followed by a hard hydrophobic layer. Nanorattles were formed by swelling of hydrophilic polymer layers on the surface of the encapsulated pigment particles in a basic solution at elevated temperature. After swelling, the outer hard polymer shell was crosslinked to improve its strength. Air void sizes of the nanorattles were found to be controlled by swelling time, temperature, and the hydrophilic polymer layer thickness. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A reversible catalyst immobilization system via self‐assembly of hydrogen bonding between thymine anchored on silica gel support and 2,6‐diaminopyridine functionalized with a catalyst (copper bromide‐N,N,N′,N′‐tetraethyldiethylenetriamine (TEDETA) complex) was developed for the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA). At elevated temperatures, the hydrogen bonding disassociated and released the catalyst as free small molecules for catalysis, which effectively mediated a living polymerization of MMA, producing PMMA with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution (<1.3). At room temperature, the catalyst assembled on the silica gel support by hydrogen bonding, and thus could be recovered and reused for a second run of ATRP. The recovered catalyst still mediated a living polymerization of MMA with reduced activity (54–64%), but had much improved control of the polymerization. The resulting PMMA had molecular weights very close to theoretical vales. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 22–30, 2004  相似文献

Graphite oxide (GO) was prepared and immobilized with dodecyl isobutyric acid trithiocarbonate (DIBTC) reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent. The hydroxyl groups of GO were attached to the DIBTC RAFT agent through an esterification process. The resultant modified GO was used for the preparation of polystyrene (PS)/graphite nanocomposites in miniemulsion polymerization. The RAFT‐grafted GO (GO‐DIBTC) at various loadings was dispersed in styrene monomer, and the resultant mixtures were sonicated in the presence of a surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate) and a hydrophobe (hexadecane) to form miniemulsions. The stable miniemulsions thus obtained were polymerized using azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator to yield encapsulated PS‐GO nanocomposites. The molar mass and polydispersity index of PS in the nanocomposites depended on the amount of RAFT‐grafted GO in the system, in accordance with the features of the RAFT polymerization method. The PS‐GO nanocomposites were of exfoliated morphology, as confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy measurements. The thermal stability and mechanical properties of the PS‐GO nanocomposites were better than those of the neat PS polymer. Furthermore, the mechanical properties were dependent on the modified GO content (i.e., the amount of RAFT‐grafted GO). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

A one‐pot method is introduced for the successful synthesis of narrow‐distributed (Đ = 1.22) vinyl polymer with both ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMW) (M w = 1.31 × 106 g mol−1) and micro‐/nanomorphology under mild conditions. The method involves the following four stages: homogeneous polymerization, polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA), PISA and reorganization, and PISA and multiple reorganizations. The key points to the production of UHMW polystyrene are to minimize radical termination by segregating radicals in different nanoreactors and to ensure sufficient chain propagation by promoting further reorganizations of these reactors in situ. This method therefore endows polymeric materials with the outstanding properties of both UHMW and tunable micro‐/nanoparticles under mild conditions in one pot.

A series of environmentally sensitive ABA triblock copolymers with different block lengths were prepared by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization from acrylic acid (AA) and N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm). The GPC and 1H NMR analyses demonstrated the narrow molecular weight distribution and precise chemical structure of the prepared P(AA‐b‐NIPAAm‐b‐AA) triblock copolymers owing to the controlled/living characteristics of RAFT polymerization. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the triblock copolymers could be tailored by adjusting the length of PAA block and controlled by the pH value. Under heating, the triblock copolymers underwent self‐assemble in dilute aqueous solution and formed nanoparticles revealed via TEM images. Physically crosslinked nanogels induced by inter‐/intra‐hydrogen bonding or core‐shell micelle particles thus could be obtained by changing environmental conditions. With a well‐defined structure and stimuli‐responsive properties, the P(AA‐b‐NIPAAm‐b‐AA) copolymer is expected to be employed as a nanocarrier for biomedical applications in controlled‐drug delivery and targeting therapy. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study presents a very simple method to fabricate organic–inorganic asymmetric colloid spheres. In this approach, when silica particles are used as the Pickering emulsifier to stabilize the monomer droplets (styrene) in water via acid–base interaction between silica particles and auxiliary monomer (1‐vinylimidazole), the exposed surfaces of silica particles are very easy to be locally modified with 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate. When water‐based initiator is added, polystyrene–silica asymmetric colloid spheres are highly yielded. The sizes of silica and polymer particles can be tunable. These organic–inorganic anisotropic colloid spheres can self‐assemble into an interesting thickness‐dependent film. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

In this report, we synthesized poly(N‐vinyl imidazole) (PNVI) grafted silica nanoparticles (SiNP) by using RAFT polymerization through grafting‐from approach to demonstrate that the self‐assembled structure of SiNP is the key diving force in improving physical properties of SiNP based nanocomposites. In a multistep synthetic process, well‐defined PNVI chains with tunable molecular weights and surface chain densities were grown from the RAFT agent anchored SiNP surface using N‐vinyl imidazole (NVI) as a monomer. Spectroscopic and thermal analysis confirmed surface grafting of PNVI on SiNP surface and the amount of grafted PNVI chins were also quantified. The mean diameter of the PNVI grafted SiNP (PNVI‐g‐SiNP) particles altered between 50 and 100 nm with the variation of PNVI chain lengths. The present approach is metal‐catalyst free, straight forward, and provides PNVI functionalized SiNP in a simple manner in comparison to the reported methods. Further, these PNVI‐g‐SiNP particles were used as a nanofiller to prepare nanocomposites with Poly(4,4′‐diphenylether‐5,5′‐bibenzimidazole) (OPBI). These nanocomposites displayed significantly higher mechanical, proton conductivity and less acid leaching properties than the pristine OPBI. The anisotropic self‐assembled ordered structure formation of nanofillers in the nanocomposites believed to be the driving force for the enhanced physical properties. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Aqueous emulsion polymerizations of styrene were performed in the presence of a macromolecular reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent (macroRAFT) composed of acrylic acid (AA) and poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether acrylate (PEOA), end‐capped by a reactive dodecyl trithiocarbonate group (P(AA‐co‐PEOA)‐TTC). The influence of the stirring speed or the presence of different amounts of a divalent salt, CaCl2, were investigated in this polymerization‐induced self‐assembly process, in which spherical and nonspherical nano‐objects were formed upon the synthesis of amphiphilic diblock copolymers in situ. It appeared that the addition of CaCl2 led to the controlled formation of different nano‐objects such as spheres, fibers or vesicles, whereas an appropriate stirring speed was required for the formation of nanofibers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A carboxylic acid based reversible additionfragmentation transfer (RAFT) agent is used to prepare gels composed of worm‐like diblock copolymers using two non‐ionic monomers, glycerol monomethacrylate (GMA) and 2‐hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA). Ionization of the carboxylic acid end‐group on the PGMA stabilizer block induces a worm‐to‐sphere transition, which in turn causes immediate degelation. This morphological transition is fully reversible as determined by TEM and rheology studies and occurs because of a subtle change in the packing parameter for the copolymer chains. A control experiment where the methyl ester derivative of the RAFT agent is used to prepare the same diblock copolymer confirms that no pH‐responsive behavior occurs in this case. This end‐group ionization approach is important for the design of new pH‐responsive copolymer nano‐objects as, unlike polyacids or polybases, only a minimal amount of added base (or acid) is required to drive the morphological transition.  相似文献

A simple route to organic–inorganic (O/I) nano‐objects with different morphologies through polymerization‐induced block copolymer self‐assembly is described. The synthetic strategy relies on the chain‐extension of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS)‐containing macro‐CTA (PMAiBuPOSS13 and PMAiBuPOSS19) with styrene at 120 °C in octane, a selective solvent of the POSS‐containing block. The polymerization system was proven to afford a plethora of O/I nano‐objects, such as spherical micelles, cylindrical micelles, and vesicles depending on the respective molar masses of the PMAiBuPOSS and polystyrene (PS) blocks. The cooling procedure was also proven to be a crucial step to generate particles with a unique morphology. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA) is an extremely versatile method for the in situ preparation of soft‐matter nanoparticles of defined size and morphologies at high concentrations, suitable for large‐scale production. Recently, certain PISA‐prepared nanoparticles have been shown to exhibit reversible polymorphism (“shape‐shifting”), typically between micellar, worm‐like, and vesicular phases (order–order transitions), in response to external stimuli including temperature, pH, electrolytes, and chemical modification. This review summarises the literature to date and describes molecular requirements for the design of stimulus‐responsive nano‐objects. Reversible pH‐responsive behavior is rationalised in terms of increased solvation of reversibly ionized groups. Temperature‐triggered order–order transitions, conversely, do not rely on inherently thermo‐responsive polymers, but are explained based on interfacial LCST or UCST behavior that affects the volume fractions of the core and stabilizer blocks. Irreversible morphology transitions, on the other hand, can result from chemical post‐modification of reactive PISA‐made particles. Emerging applications and future research directions of this “smart” nanoparticle behavior are reviewed.

A series of well‐defined hybrid block copolymers PMACyPOSS‐b‐PMMA and PMAiBuPOSS‐b‐PMMA exhibiting high POSS weight contents have been synthesized by RAFT polymerization and further studied as modifiers for epoxy thermosets based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. The hybrid block copolymers self‐assembled within the epoxy precursors into micelles possessing an inorganic core and a PMMA corona. Thanks to the presence of the PMMA blocks that remain miscible until the end of the reaction, curing of the resulting blends afforded nanostructured hybrid organic/inorganic networks with well‐dispersed inorganic‐rich nanodomains with diameters on the order of 20 nm. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dispersion RAFT polymerization of styrene in the alcohol/water mixture mediated with the brush macro‐RAFT agent of poly[poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether vinylphenyl‐co‐styrene] trithiocarbonate [P(mPEGV‐co‐St)‐TTC] with similar molecular weight but different chemical composition is investigated. Well‐controlled RAFT polymerization including an initial slow homogeneous polymerization and a subsequent fast heterogeneous polymerization at almost complete monomer conversion is achieved. The molecular weight of the synthesized block copolymer increases linearly with the monomer conversion, and the polydispersity is relatively narrow (PDI < 1.3). The RAFT polymerization kinetics is dependent on the chemical composition in the brush macro‐RAFT agents, and those with high content of hydrophobic segment lead to fast RAFT polymerization. The growth of the block copolymer nano‐objects during the RAFT polymerization is explored, and various block copolymer nano‐objects such as nanospheres, worms, vesicles and large‐compound‐micelle‐like particles are prepared. The parameters such as the chemical composition in the brush macro‐RAFT agent, the chain length of the solvatophobic block, the concentration of the feeding monomer and the solvent character affecting the size and morphology of the block copolymer nano‐objects are investigated. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(siloxane‐fluoroacrylate)‐grafted silica hybrid nanoparticles were prepared by surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP). The silica nanoparticles with α‐bromo‐ester initiator group for copper‐mediated ATRP were prepared by the self‐assembled monolayers of (3‐aminopropyl)triethoxysilane and 2‐bromoisobutyrate bromide. Well‐defined diblock copolymer brushes consisting of poly(methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) and poly(2,2,3,3,4,4,4‐heptafluorobutyl methacrylate) blocks were obtained by using initial homopolymer brushes as the macroinitiators for the SI‐ATRP of the second monomer. Chemical compositions and structures of the nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. Surface properties and morphology of the nanoparticles were investigated with X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and water contact angle measurement. It is revealed that the surfaces of the nanocomposites are rough at the microscale and nanoscale. The formation reason of the superhydrophobic surfaces was also discussed in this work. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

Surface functionalization in a nanoscopic scaffold is highly desirable to afford nano‐particles with diversified features and functions. Herein are reported the surface decoration of dispersed block copolymer nano‐objects. First, side‐chain double bond containing oleic acid based macro chain transfer agent (macroCTA), poly(2‐(methacryloyloxy)ethyl oleate) (PMAEO), was synthesized by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and used as a steric stabilizer during the RAFT dispersion block copolymerization of benzyl methacrylate (BzMA) in n‐heptane at 70 °C. We have found that block copolymer morphologies could evolve from spherical micelles, through worm to vesicles, and finally to large compound vesicles with the increase of solvophobic poly(BzMA) block length, keeping solvophilic chain length and total solid content constant. Finally, different thiol compounds having alkyl, carboxyl, hydroxyl, and protected amine functionalities have been ligated onto the PMAEO segment, which is prone to functionalization via its reactive double bond through thiol‐ene radical reactions. Thiol‐ene modification reactions of the as‐synthesized nano‐objects retain their morphologies as visualized by field emission‐scanning electron microscopy. Thus, the facile and modular synthetic approach presented in this study allowed in situ preparation of surface modified block copolymer nano‐objects at very high concentration, where renewable resource derived oleate surface in the nanoparticle was functionalized. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
