Four different xanthates containing either phosphonate or bisphosphonate moieties were synthesized with high degree of purity. These xanthates were used as chain transfer agents (CTA) in the RAFT/MADIX polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) to prepare end‐capped poly(VAc). The rate of VAc polymerization in the presence of these new CTAs was shown to be similar to that obtained with conventional xanthate, that is, (methyl ethoxycarbonothioyl) sulfanyl acetate. Good control of VAc polymerization was also obtained since the molecular weight increased linearly with monomer conversion for each phosphonate‐containing xanthate. Low‐PDI values were obtained, ascribed to efficient exchange during RAFT/MADIX polymerization. Cex value was therefore calculated to about 25, based on RAFT/MADIX of VAc in the presence of rhodixan A1/VAc adduct. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Aminopropylisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) was used to prepare a POSS‐containing reversible addition‐fragmentation transfer (RAFT) agent. The POSS‐containing RAFT agent was used in the RAFT polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) to produce tadpole‐shaped organic/inorganic hybrid Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). The results show that the POSS‐containing RAFT agent was an effective chain transfer agent in the RAFT polymerization of NIPAM, and the polymerization kinetics were found to be pseudo‐first‐order behavior. The thermal properties of the organic/inorganic hybrid PNIPAM were also characterized by differential scanning calorimetry. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the tadpole‐shaped inorganic/organic hybrid PNIPAM was enhanced by POSS molecule. The self‐assembly behavior of the tadpole‐shaped inorganic/organic hybrid PNIPAM was investigated by atomic force microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The results show the core‐shell nanostructured micelles with a uniform diameter. The diameter of the micelle increases with the molecular weight of the hybrid PNIPAM. Surprisingly, the micelle of the tadpole‐shaped inorganic/organic hybrid PNIPAM with low molecular weight has a much bigger and more compact core than that with high molecular weight. © Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graphene‐polymer nanocomposites have significant potential in many applications such as photovoltaic devices, fuel cells, and sensors. Functionalization of graphene is an essential step in the synthesis of uniformly distributed graphene‐polymer nanocomposites, but often results in structural defects in the graphitic sp2 carbon framework. To address this issue, we synthesized graphene oxide (GO) by oxidative exfoliation of graphite and then reduced it into graphene via self‐polymerization of dopamine (DA). The simultaneous reduction of GO into graphene, and polymerization and coating of polydopamine (PDA) on the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) surface were confirmed with XRD, UV–Vis, XPS, Raman, TGA, and FTIR. The degree of reduction of GO increased with increasing DA/GO ratio from 1/4 to 4/1 and/or with increasing temperature from room temperature to 60 °C. A RAFT agent, 2‐(dodecylthiocarbonothioylthio)?2‐methylpropionic acid, was linked onto the surface of the PDA/RGO, with a higher equivalence of RAFT agent in the reaction leading to a higher concentration of RAFT sites on the surface. Graphene‐poly(methyl methacrylate), graphene‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate), and graphene‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) nanocomposites were synthesized via RAFT polymerization, showing their characteristic solubility in several different solvents. This novel synthetic route was found facile and can be readily used for the rational design of graphene‐polymer nanocomposites, promoting their applications. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Herein we show that a new amphiphilic poly(vinyl alcohol)‐b‐poly(acrylonitrile) block copolymer dispersed in water can be easily loaded with gold nanoparticles by addition of chlorauric acid followed by reduction by sodium borohydride. After deposition of the so‐loaded micelles onto a silicon wafer, followed by an appropriate thermal treatment, the poly(acrylonitrile) core of the micelles is carbonized, while the poly(vinyl alcohol) shell is completely decomposed and volatilized, leading to gold encapsulated in carbon nanoparticles. The morphology of the micelles is maintained during thermal treatment without requiring shell‐cross‐linking of the micelles prior to pyrolysis.  相似文献

Poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone)‐block‐poly(N‐vinyl carbazole)‐block‐poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP‐b‐PVK‐b‐PVP) triblock copolymers were synthesized via sequential reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer/macromolecular design via the interchange of xanthate (RAFT/MADIX) process. First, 1,4‐phenylenebis(methylene)bis(ethyl xanthate) was used as a chain transfer agent to mediate the radical polymerization of N‐vinyl carbazole (NVK). It was found that the polymerization was in a controlled and living manner. Second, one of α,ω‐dixanthate‐terminated PVKs was used as the macromolecular chain transfer agent to mediate the radical polymerization of N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) to obtain the triblock copolymers with various lengths of PVP blocks. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the triblock copolymers in bulks were microphase‐separated and that PVK blocks were self‐organized into cylindrical microdomains, depending on the lengths of PVP blocks. In aqueous solutions, all these triblock copolymers can self‐assemble into the spherical micelles. The critical micelle concentrations of the triblock copolymers were determined without external adding fluorescence probe. By analyzing the change in fluorescence intensity as functions of the concentration, it was judged that the onset of micellization occurred at the concentration while the FL intensity began negatively to deviate from the initial linear increase with the concentration. Fluorescence spectroscopy indicates that the self‐assembled nanoobjects of the PVP‐b‐PVK‐b‐PVP triblock copolymers in water were capable of emitting blue/or purple fluorescence under the irradiation of ultraviolet light. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel thermo‐responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐block‐poly(l ‐lactide)‐block‐poly(N‐isopropylacylamide) (PNIPAAm‐b‐PLLA‐b‐PNIPAAm) triblock copolymers were successfully prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization of NIPAAm with Br‐PLLA‐Br macroinitiator, using a CuCl/tris(2‐dimethylaminoethyl) amine (Me6TREN) complex as catalyst at 25 °C in a N,N‐dimethylformamide/water mixture. The molecular weight of the copolymers ranges from 18,000 to 38,000 g mol?1, and the dispersity from 1.10 to 1.28. Micelles are formed by self‐assembly of copolymers in aqueous medium at room temperature, as evidenced by 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The critical micelle concentration determined by fluorescence spectroscopy ranges from 0.0077 to 0.016 mg mL?1. 1H NMR analysis in selective solvents confirmed the core‐shell structure of micelles. The copolymers exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) between 32.1 and 32.8 °C. The micelles are spherical in shape with a mean diameter between 31.4 and 83.3 nm, as determined by TEM and DLS. When the temperature is raised above the LCST, micelle size increases at high copolymer concentrations due to aggregation. In contrast, at low copolymer concentrations, decrease of micelle size is observed due to collapse of PNIPAAm chains. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The dispersion reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of 4‐vinylpyridine in toluene in the presence of the polystyrene dithiobenzoate (PS‐CTA) macro‐RAFT agent with different chain length is discussed. The RAFT polymerization undergoes an initial slow homogeneous polymerization and a subsequent fast heterogeneous one. The RAFT polymerization rate is dependent on the PS‐CTA chain length, and short PS‐CTA generally leads to fast RAFT polymerization. The dispersion RAFT polymerization induces the self‐assembly of the in situ synthesized polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) block copolymer into highly concentrated block copolymer nano‐objects. The PS‐CTA chain length exerts great influence on the particle nucleation and the size and morphology of the block copolymer nano‐objects. It is found, short PS‐CTA leads to fast particle nucleation and tends to produce large‐sized vesicles or large‐compound micelles, and long PS‐CTA leads to formation of small‐sized nanospheres. Comparison between the polymerization‐induced self‐assembly and self‐assembly of block copolymer in the block‐selective solvent is made, and the great difference between the two methods is demonstrated. The present study is anticipated to be useful to reveal the chain extension and the particle growth of block copolymer during the RAFT polymerization under dispersion condition. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. RAFT polymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) mediated by silica-supported 3-(methoxycarbonyl-phenyl-methylsulfanylthiocarbonylsulfanyl) propionic acid (Si- MPPA) and 3-(benzylsulfanylthiocarbonylsulfanyl) propionic acid (Si-BSPA) was investigated. The molecular weight and polydispersity of grafted polymeric chains and the grafted chain transfer agent (CTA) efficiency (Ge) were strongly dependent on the types and loading of Si-CTAs and free CTA used in solution. Under similar reaction conditions, the graft polymerization mediated by Si-MPPA was better controlled than that using Si-BSPA. The introduction of a free CTA in solution during Si-MPPA mediated polymerization could significantly decrease the polydispersity of free and grafted polymeric chains and enhance the grafted CTA efficiency, and longer polymeric chains could be grafted onto silica support when Si-MPPA with a higher CTA loading was used to mediate the polymerization. In all cases, the RAFT polymerization using 2-(2-cyanopropyl) dithiobenzoate (CPDB) as a free CTA could afford well-defined grafted PMA and significantly increased Ge value, while the polymerization rate was also decreased.  相似文献

Diblock copolymers consisting of a multibranched polymethacrylate segment with densely grafted poly[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether] pendants and a poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) segment were synthesized by a combination of living cationic polymerization and RAFT polymerization. A macromonomer having both a poly[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether] backbone and a terminal methacryloyl group was synthesized by living cationic polymerization. The sequential RAFT copolymerizations of the macromonomer and N‐isopropylacrylamide in this order were performed in aqueous media employing 4‐cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate as a chain transfer agent and 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid) as an initiator. The obtained diblock copolymers possessed relatively narrow molecular weight distributions and controlled molecular weights. The thermoresponsive properties of these polymers were investigated. Upon heating, the aqueous solutions of the diblock copolymers exhibited two‐stage thermoresponsive properties denoted by the appearance of two cloud points, indicating that the densely grafted poly[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether] pendants and the poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) segments independently responded to temperature. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization has been known as a convenient method for the synthesis of polymers of designed molecular structures. Of particular interest are bifunctional or multifunctional chain‐transfer agents (CTAs) which could be employed in the development of advanced materials via RAFT polymerization. In the present study, four bifunctional 2‐(alkoxycarbonothioylthio) RAFT CTAs with ? COOH functionalities containing methoxy, ethoxy, isopropoxy, and octyloxy groups, respectively, were synthesized and characterized by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. Polymerizations of vinyl acetate using these CTAs exhibited increased molecular weight with consumption of monomer and relatively narrow dispersities, indicative of living polymerization behavior. The effect of the concentration of 2‐(ethoxycarbonothioylthio) acetic acid on the polymerization was examined, revealing that higher concentration of CTA led to lower molecular weight and narrower dispersity. As an example of the application of the synthesized bifunctional CTAs, TiO2‐poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) nanocomposites were synthesized via a one‐pot process and characterized by TGA, DSC, TEM, and affinity test, suggesting attachment of PVAc onto the nano‐TiO2 particles. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) homopolymers with low polydispersities were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization. The performances of two chain transfer agents, 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate and 4‐cyanopentanic acid dithiobenzoate (CPADB), were compared. It was found that the polymerization of 2‐(diethylamino) ethyl methylacrylate was under good control in the presence of CPADB with 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid) (ACPA) as initiator in 1,4‐dioxane at 70 °C. The kinetic behaviors were investigated under different CPADB/ACPA molar ratios. A long polymerization inhibition period was observed at high [CPADB]/[ACPA] ratio. The influences of [CPADB]/[ACPA] ratio, monomer/[CPADB] ratio, and temperature were studied with respect to monomer conversion, molecular weight control, and polydispersity index (PDI). The PDI decreased from 1.21 to 1.12, as the CPADB/ACPA molar ratio changed from 2 to 10. The molecular weight of PDEAEMA could be controlled by monomer/CPADB molar ratio. The control over MW and PDI was improved as the temperature increased from 60 to 70 °C; however, an additional increase to 80 °C led to a loss of control. Using PDEAEMA macroRAFT agent, pH/thermo double‐responsive block copolymers of PDEAEMA and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PDEAEMA‐b‐PNIPAM) with narrow polydispersity (PDI, 1.24) were synthesized. The lower critical solution temperature of PDEAEMA‐b‐PNIPAM block copolymer depended on the environmental pH. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinyl laurate) (PVL) and poly(vinyl stearate) (PVS) were synthesized by means of cobalt‐mediated radical polymerization (CMRP). Cobalt(II) diacetylacetonate (Co(acac)2) was demonstrated to control the radical polymerization of these monomers in solution. Molecular weights up to 15,000 g·mol?1 were obtained with reasonably low polydispersity indices (PDI < 1.3). The efficiency of the redox initiator [lauroyle peroxide (LPO)/citric acid (CA)] was found to be low (around 10%) as already reported for vinyl acetate. The solvent and temperature were found to have a very weak influence on the initiator efficiency. It appeared that CA played no role in the initiation process that only involved a redox reaction between LPO and Co(acac)2. PVL‐b‐PVS diblock copolymers could be synthesized using two strategies: (1) Sequential addition, that is, addition of the second monomer (VS) at high conversion of the first one (VL). (2) Macroinitiator technique, that is, isolation of a PVL macroinitiator then polymerization of VS from this cobalt functionalized macroinitiator. Both techniques allowed the synthesis of diblock copolymers with molar masses around 25,000 g·mol?1 and PDI lower than 1.4. The resulting materials were characterized by DSC, revealing that both blocks exhibit side‐chain crystallinity and phase segregate in the bulk. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper, self‐assembled polymeric toroids formed by a temperature‐driven process are reported. Rhodamine B (RhB) end‐capped poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) demonstrating a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) is prepared. In a two‐phase system, the polymer in the aqueous phase could move to the chloroform phase on raising the temperature above its LCST. This temperature‐driven process results in the formation of polymeric toroids in the chloroform phase, and the strategy affords a new pathway to toroidal self‐assembly of polymers. Moreover, the photoluminescent behavior of the RhB end‐capped PNIPAAm species formed by the process is also studied and discussed.

The reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of N‐vinylcarbazole (NVK) mediated by macromolecular xanthates was used to prepare three types of block copolymers containing poly(N‐vinylcarbazole) (PVK). Using a poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether based xanthate ( PEG‐X ), the RAFT polymerization of NVK proceeded in a controlled way to afford a series of PEG‐b‐PVK with different PVK chain lengths. Successive RAFT polymerization of NVK and vinyl acetate (VAc) with a small molecule xanthate ( X1 ) as the chain transfer agent was tested to prepare PVK‐b‐PVAc. Though both monomers can be homopolymerized in a controlled manner with this xanthate, only by polymerizing NVK first could give well‐defined block copolymers. The xanthate groups in the end of PVK could be removed by radical‐induced reduction using tributylstannane, and PVK‐b‐PVA was obtained by further hydrolysis of PVK‐b‐PVAc under basic conditions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used in two methods to prepare polymer nanofibers containing Ag nanoparticles. The first method involved electrospinning the PVP nanofibers containing Ag nanoparticles directly from the PVP solutions containing the Ag nanoparticles. N,N‐Dimethylformamide was used as a solvent for the PVP as well as a reducing agent for the Ag+ ions in the PVP solutions. In the second method, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solutions were electrospun with 5 wt.‐% of the PVP containing Ag nanoparticles. The Ag nanoparticles were evenly distributed in the PVA nanofibers. PVP containing Ag nanoparticles could be used to introduce Ag nanoparticles to other polymer nanofibers that are miscible with PVP.

In this study, we grafted water‐soluble biocompatible polymer, poly(N‐(2‐hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide) (PHPMA), onto the surface of multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). The reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents, dithioesters, were successfully immobilized onto the surface of MWNTs first, PHPMA chains were then subsequently grafted onto MWNTs via RAFT polymerization by using dithioesters immobilized on MWNTs as RAFT agent. FTIR, XPS, 1H NMR, Raman and TGA were used to characterize the resulting products and to determine the content of water‐soluble PHPMA chains in the product. The MWNTs grafted with PHPMA chains have good solubility in distilled water, PBS buffer, and methanol. TEM images of the samples provide direct evidence for the formation of a nanostructure that MWNTs coated with polymer layer. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Polyaniline (PANI) is successfully self‐assembled with poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) into aqueous nanocolloids. The typical morphology of the colloids is studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM), which reveals spherical nanoparticles with a diameter of 80–150 nm. A possible mechanism for such a post‐synthetic self‐assembly process is proposed.

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)‐containing quasi‐model amphiphilic polymer conetworks (APCNs) were prepared by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using α,ω‐bis(2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate)‐PEG as a bifunctional RAFT macrochain transfer agent (macro‐CTA) and stepwise additions of a hydrophobic monomer and a crosslinker (crosslinker: macro‐CTA = 10:1, reaction time 24 h). Three different types of monomers, methyl methacrylate (MMA), n‐butyl acrylate and styrene, were employed as the hydrophobic monomers, whereas ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, ethylene glycol diacrylate and 1,4‐divinylbenzene served as the respective crosslinkers. PEG homopolymer hydrophilic quasi‐model networks were also prepared by RAFT‐polymerizing the three crosslinkers directly onto the two active ends of the PEG‐based macro‐CTA. From the three ABA triblock copolymers prepared, the MMA‐containing one was obtained at the highest polymerization yields. The crosslinking yields of the three ABA triblock copolymers with the corresponding crosslinkers were higher than those of the PEG‐based macro‐CTA with the same crosslinkers. The degrees of swelling (DSs) of all conetworks were measured in water and in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The DSs of the APCNs in THF were higher than those in water, whereas the reverse was true for the DSs of the hydrophilic homopolymer networks. Finally, the aqueous DSs of the APCNs were lower than those of the corresponding hydrophilic homopolymer networks. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization was used to produce poly(methyl acrylate) (pMA) loops grafted onto silica nanoparticles using doubly anchored bifunctional RAFT agents 1,4‐bis(3′‐trimethoxysilylpropyltrithiocarbonylmethyl)benzene (Z‐group approach) and 1,6‐bis(o,p‐2′‐trimethoxysilylethylbenzyltrithiocarbonyl)hexane (R‐group approach) as mediators. In both cases, molecular weights of the resulting surface‐confined polymer loops increased with monomer conversion, whereas the grafting density was significantly higher in the case of the R‐group supported RAFT polymerization due to mechanistic differences of the RAFT process at the surface. This result was evident from thermogravimetric analysis and supported by scanning electron microscopy. Polymer loops with molecular weights up to 53,000 g mol?1 were accessible with polydispersities of about 2.0 without and 1.5 with the addition of free RAFT agent. UV signals of the detached pMA loops measured via size exclusion chromatography were shifted to higher molecular weights compared with the corresponding RI signals, indicating branching reactions caused by the close proximity of growing radicals and polymer at the surface of the silica nanoparticles. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of amphiphilic biodegradable and biocompatible poly(p‐dioxanone)‐grafted poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) copolymers with well‐defined structure were obtained by a three‐step synthesis based on the “grafting from” concept. The first step (protection step), called the partial silylation of PVA hydroxyl groups, was accomplished by 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazane and catalyst chlorotrimethylsilane in dimethyl sulfoxide using THF as cosolvent. The second step was the ring‐opening polymerization of p‐dioxanone (PDO) initiated from the remaining OH groups of the partially silylated PVA. Finally, a deprotection step was followed: the silylether group was deprotected easily under very mild conditions. The synthetic conditions of the first two steps were investigated, and the structures of polymers formed in each step were characterized by various analytical methods. The results showed that the molecular structure of the PVA‐g‐PPDO could be controlled easily by the degree of silylation and the feed ratio. In addition, the micellization of amphiphilic PVA‐g‐PPDO copolymers in water was proved by fluorescence spectra and dynamic light scattering, and the relationship between structural parameters of copolymers and micellar properties was studied preliminarily. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
