Polymer networks showing a thermally induced shape‐memory effect were prepared through the crosslinking of oligo(?‐caprolactone)dimethacrylates under photocuring with or without an initiator. The influence of the molecular weight of the oligo(?‐caprolactone)dimethacrylates and the initiator concentration on the macroscopic properties of the polymer networks was investigated. The isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization behavior of the polymer networks was evaluated as a basic principle of the functionalization process. Shape‐memory properties such as the strain fixity and strain recovery rate were quantified with cyclic thermomechanical tensile experiments for different maximum elongations. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The photomechanical response and photochemistry of a conventional, unsubstituted azobenzene‐functionalized liquid crystalline polymer network (azo‐LCN) is contrasted to that of an analogous material prepared with meta‐fluorinated azobenzene chromophores. The polydomain azo‐LCN materials exhibit nearly identical thermomechanical and optical properties. Photomechanical characterization indicates that the fluorination of the azobenzene chromophore reduces the deflection of cantilevers composed of the materials by 50%, which spectroscopic analysis reveals is due to a reduction in the ability of this material to isomerize and potentially reorient. This work is further confirmation that the underlying photochemistry of azobenzene is a primary contributor to the generation of photomechanical work in these materials. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) synthesized by melt polymerization, which exhibits the capacity of shape memory, is reported here for the first time. The method of synthesize the shape memory LCE has been explored. A facile two‐step method to synthesize these anisotropic materials to realize reversible shape change behavior is reported. The first reaction is the addition of nematic liquid crystal molecules to form a kind of liquid crystal polymer. Subsequently, the polymer is crosslinked to trap the order of the liquid crystal into a crosslinked LCE. The LCE exhibits liquid crystalline behavior which has shape memory with excellent fixity and recovery. Its shape memory and actuating properties also have been studied. When reheating the LCE to 165 °C, the shape will recover. The main chains and crosslinked bonds of the LCE contain ester groups, which are sensitive to alkaline and acidic condition. It turns out that the LCE is intact under acidic condition, but it can be degraded under alkaline condition. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The morphology and optical properties of polymer stabilized liquid crystals formed in a more highly ordered low molecular weight liquid crystal solvent were studied. Tetrafunctional, mesogenic monomers (with and without flexible spacers) were polymerized in isotropic, nematic and smectic phases of the LC solvent (4′-octyl-4-cyanobiphenyl) and studied with scanning electron microscopy and cross-polarized light microscopy. The network morphology of the nematic and isotropic phase polymerizations showed strong similarities with the corresponding polymerizations in other solvents. Polymerization in the smectic phase, however, resulted in marked increases in network order and directionality. Most dramatically, even the polymer without flexible spacer formed a fibrous network of rodlike units, in contrast to the random, beaded texture formed by the same polymer in nematic or isotropic conditions. Correspondingly, a large increase in birefringence demonstrated significant polymer orientation and more effective orientational interaction with the liquid crystalline solvent.  相似文献

Here, we describe a “smart” polymeric material, which is able to readily detect and discriminate amine vapors. The dynamic imine‐based network can be conveniently prepared by mixing a commercially available, amino‐functionalized polysiloxane with small amounts of a diarylethene dialdehyde. The photoswitchable crosslinker allows for reversible imprinting of custom‐designed patterns on the polymer surface with (sun)light and thus enables noninvasive information storage in the material, which before, during, and after amine exposure can readily be decoded with commonly used smartphone apps. This feature along with the self‐healing nature of the dynamic polymer, an easy recycling and manufacturing procedure, and the overall low cost and toxicity render this material advantageous to develop low‐cost and practical amine sensing devices for the broad public. © 2019 The Authors. A novel combined main‐chain/side‐chain liquid crystalline polymer based on mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystal polymers (MJLCPs) containing two biphenyls per mesogenic core of MJLCPs main chain, poly(2,5‐bis{[6‐(4‐butoxy‐4′‐oxy‐biphenyl)hexyl]oxycarbonyl}styrene) (P1–P8) was successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The chemical structure of the monomer was confirmed by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. The molecular characterizations of the polymer with different molecular weights (P1–P8) were performed with 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their phase transitions and liquid‐crystalline behaviors of the polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). We found that the polymers P1–P8 exhibited similar behavior with three different liquid crystalline phases upon heating to or cooling in addition to isotropic state, which should be related to the complex liquid crystal property of the side‐chain and the main‐chain. Moreover, the transition temperatures of liquid crystalline phases of P1–P8 are found to be dependent on the molecular weight. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were prepared by a devised method, in which photo‐polymerization induced phase separation in a mixtures of a macro‐iniferter, methyl acrylater, and liquid crystal. The morphology of the obtained PDLC films was examined on a polarized optical microscopy, and the effect of molecular weight of MIs on the electro‐optical properties was deliberately investigated. Decreasing the molecular weight of MIs in the films led to formation of larger liquid crystal droplets and a lower Vth values. Vsat increased and the memory effect decreased because of the increased interface anchoring strength induced by the higher molecular weight of polymer matrices. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization of crosslinkable liquid crystal monomers in chiral liquid crystalline media stabilizes the phase and enables distinct electro‐optic properties relative to small‐molecule analogs. Particularly interesting are cases where the polymerization forms a crosslinked polymer network that maintains a “structural” chirality. Recent reports have employed this methodology to realize a diverse set of electro‐optic responses in polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs) including reflection bandwidth broadening, reflection wavelength tuning, and dynamic scattering modes. It has been proposed that the mechanism at the root of these electro‐optic responses is an ion‐mediated, electromechanical deformation of the stabilizing and structurally chiral polymer network. In an effort to better understand the nature of these deformations, here we have characterized the electro‐optic response of PSCLCs with different polymer concentrations and crosslink densities. The dynamic response of PSCLCs to electric fields exhibits a time‐dependent behavior reminiscent of the creep of polymeric materials to mechanical deformations. The electro‐optic response can be described as the superposition of two contributions: the fast deformation of a relatively soft component of the polymer network (1–2 s) and the slower (10–20 s) deformation of a harder component. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A diamine‐based benzoxazine monomer (Bz) and a liquid crystalline epoxy monomer (LCE) are synthesized, respectively. Subsequently, a benzoxazine‐epoxy interpenetrating polymer network (PBEI) containing liquid crystalline structures is obtained by sequential curing of the LCE and the Bz in the presence of imidazole. The results show that the preferential curing of LCE plays a key role in the formation mechanism of liquid crystalline phase. Due to the introduction of liquid crystalline structures, the thermal conductivity of PBEI increases with increasing content of LCE. When the content of LCE is 80 wt %, the thermal conductivity reaches 0.32 W m?1 K?1. Additionally, the heat‐resistance of PBEI is superior to liquid crystalline epoxy resin. Among them, PBEI55 containing equal weight of Bz and LCE has better comprehensive performance. Its thermal conductivity, glass transition temperature, and the 5 % weight loss temperature are 0.28 W m?1 K?1, 160 °C, and 339 °C, respectively. By introducing boron nitride (BN) fillers into PBEI55, a composite of PBEI/BN with the highest thermal conductivity of 3.00 W m?1 K?1 is obtained. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Thermally enhanced photoinduced in‐plane molecular reorientation in new photo‐cross‐linkable polymer liquid crystalline (PPLC) films comprising 4‐[ω‐(4‐methoxycinnamoyloxy)alkyloxy]biphenyl side groups is explored using linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light exposure and subsequent annealing. The influence of the alkylene spacer length between the photo‐cross‐linkable group and the biphenyl mesogenic moiety is investigated. The straight‐line characteristics of the photoreactive mesogenic side group and the 4‐methoxycinnamoyl group play important roles in the high photoreactivity and the large thermally enhanced molecular reorientation, where the in‐plane order and the birefringence of the reoriented film are 0.61 and 0.18 are obtained. Finally, cooperative molecular reorientation of dichroic dyes doped in PPLC films is also achieved to fabricate a linear polarizer. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report here a facile synthesis of high performance electro‐active polymer actuator based on a sulfonated polyimide with well‐defined silver electrodes via self‐metallization. The proposed method greatly reduces fabrication time and cost, and obviates a cation exchange process required in the fabrication of ionic polymer‐metal composite actuators. Also, the self‐metallized silver electrodes exhibit outstanding metal‐polymer adhesion with high conductivity, resulting in substantially larger tip displacements compared with Nafion‐based actuators.

In this paper, polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) films with LC content as low as 40 wt% were prepared, and the electro‐optical properties were carefully investigated. To accomplish this, different (meth)acrylate copolymerizaiton monomers have been used. The electro‐optical properties and morphologies of the PDLC films were strongly influenced by the chemical structure of copolymerization monomers (hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA), glycidyl methacrylate, hydroxypropyl acrylate) and their feed ratio. Lower driven voltage and higher contrast ratio were achieved when the PDLC films showed a morphology with suitably LC domain size. At high HPMA content, a thin polymer film was formed on the surface of PDLC samples, which is beneficial to decrease the total LC content in PDLC devices. A novel poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA)/PNIPA interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) was synthesized and characterized. In comparison with conventional PNIPA hydrogels, the shrinking rate of the IPN hydrogel increased when gels, swollen at 20 °C, were immersed in 50 °C water. The phase‐transition temperature of the IPN gel remained unchangeable because of the same chemical constituent in the PNIPA gel. The reswelling kinetics were slower than those of the PNIPA hydrogel because of the higher crosslinking density of the IPN hydrogel. The IPN hydrogel had better mechanical strength because of its higher crosslinking density and polymer volume fraction. The release behavior of 5‐fluorouracil (5‐Fu) from the IPN hydrogel showed that, at a lower temperature, the release of 5‐Fu was controlled by the diffusion of water molecules in the gel network. At a higher temperature, 5‐Fu inside the gel could not diffuse into the medium after a burst release caused by the release of the drug on the surface of the gel. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of fluorene‐based luminophores containing methacrylic end groups have been prepared and incorporated into uniaxially oriented liquid crystalline films by in situ photopolymerization. Various structural modifications on the 2‐(4‐cyanophenyl)fluorene core, which include alkyl chains at the 9‐position and elongation of the rigid core with one additional phenyl ring, have been investigated to generate emitters with adjusted liquid crystal compatibility, improved luminescence and dichroic properties. Polarized blue‐emitting films were produced that had an acceptable photostability, and it was found that the polarization emission was better for samples with low (5%) cross‐linker contents. Polarization of the luminescence was favored by the liquid crystalline properties of the luminophore. In addition, the detrimental effect of the alkyl substituent at the fluorene core on the mesomorphism and on the emission polarization can be overcome by lengthening the π‐system. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three series of semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks, based on crosslinked poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPA) and 1 wt % nonionic or ionic (cationic and anionic) linear polyacrylamide (PAAm), were synthesized to improve the mechanical properties of PNIPA gels. The effect of the incorporation of linear polymers into responsive networks on the temperature‐induced transition, swelling behavior, and mechanical properties was studied. Polymer networks with four different crosslinking densities were prepared with various molar ratios (25:1 to 100:1) of the monomer (N‐isopropyl acrylamide) to the crosslinker (methylenebisacrylamide). The hydrogels were characterized by the determination of the equilibrium degree of swelling at 25 °C, the compression modulus, and the effective crosslinking density, as well as the ultimate hydrogel properties, such as the tensile strength and elongation at break. The introduction of cationic and anionic linear hydrophilic PAAm into PNIPA networks increased the rate of swelling, whereas the presence of nonionic PAAm diminished it. Transition temperatures were significantly affected by both the crosslinking density and the presence of linear PAAm in the hydrogel networks. Although anionic PAAm had the greatest influence on increasing the transition temperature, the presence of nonionic PAAm caused the highest dimensional change. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks reinforced with cationic and nonionic PAAm exhibited higher tensile strengths and elongations at break than PNIPA hydrogels, whereas the presence of anionic PAAm caused a reduction in the mechanical properties. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of crosslinking polymer networks (PNs) on the molecular reorientation and electro‐optical properties of vertically aligned (VA) liquid crystal (LC) devices are investigated by applying an in‐plane switching (IPS) electric field. Through the polymerization process, crosslinking PNs are developed on the substrate surface, effectively increasing the anchoring energy and governing the LC molecular reorientation. With its stronger anchoring effect, the PNs cell shows good light transmittance and excellent vertical alignment quality, as compared to the pure LC cell. Furthermore, the alignment transformation and transmittance bounce resulting from the transient process of LC molecular reorientation are eliminated when the cell is operated at high voltages. The rising‐time (tr) and falling‐time (tf) responses of the PNs cell are significantly improved, and around 36% improvement in the optical switching response is obtained. In addition, the dynamic gray‐level tr and tf responses of the PNs cell are enhanced by around 55% and 42%, respectively, at a low driving voltage (~12 V). This developed VA‐IPS LC/PNs cell benefits not only the LC molecular alignment but also the electro‐optical performance. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. The size distributions of liquid‐crystal droplets in ultraviolet‐cured polymer‐dispersed liquid‐crystal cells have been studied with optical microscopy. It has been observed that (1) the relative masses of the liquid crystal and crosslinking agent determine the droplet size distribution for submicrometer droplet diameters and (2) only the liquid‐crystal mass fraction affects the droplet size distribution for diameters ranging from 1 to 4 μm. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of side‐chain‐functionalized α‐helical polypeptides, i.e., poly(γ‐4‐(3‐chloropropoxycarbonyl)benzyl‐L‐glutamate) (6) have been prepared from n‐butylamine initiated ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of γ‐4‐(3‐chloropropoxycarbonyl)benzyl‐L‐glutamic acid‐based N‐carboxyanhydride. Polypeptides bearing oligo‐ethylene‐glycol (OEG) groups or 1‐butylimidazolium salts were prepared from 6 via copper‐mediated [2+3] alkyne‐azide 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition or nuleophilic substitution, respectively. CD and FTIR analysis revealed that the polymers adopt α‐helical conformations both in solution and the solid state. Polymers bearing OEG (m = 3) side‐chains showed reversible LCST‐type phase transition behaviors in water while polymers bearing 1‐butylimidazolium and I? counter‐anions exhibited reversible UCST‐type transitions in water. Variable‐temperature UV‐vis analysis revealed that the phase transition temperatures (Tpts) were dependent on the main‐chain length and polymeric concentration. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Three kinds of chiral saccharide‐containing liquid crystalline (LC) acetylenic monomers were prepared by click reaction between 2‐azidoethyl‐2,3,4,6‐tetraacetyl‐β‐D ‐galactopyranoside and 1‐biphenylacetylene 4‐alkynyloxybenzoate. The obtained monomers were polymerized by WCl6‐Ph4Sn to form three side‐chain LC polyacetylenes containing 1‐[2‐(2,3,4,6‐tetraacetyl‐β‐D ‐galactopyranos‐1‐yl)‐ethyl]‐1H‐[1,2,3]‐triazol‐4′‐biphenyl 4‐alkynyloxybenzoate side groups. All monomers and polymers show a chiral smectic A phase. Self‐assembled hiearchical superstructures of the chiral saccharide‐containing LCs and LCPs in solution state were studied by field‐emission scanning electron microscopy. Because of the LC behavior, the LC molecules exhibit a high segregation strength for phase separation in dilute solution (THF/H2O = 1:9 v/v). The self‐assembled morphology of LC monomers was dependent upon the alkynyloxy chain length. Increasing the alkynyloxy chain length caused the self‐assembled morphology to change from a platelet‐like texture ( LC‐6 ) to helical twists morphology ( LC‐11 and LC‐12 ). Furthermore, the helical twist morphological structure can be aligned on the polyimide rubbed glass substrate to form two‐dimensional ordered helical patterns. In contrast to LC monomers, the LCP‐11 self‐assembled into much more complicate morphologies, including nanospheres and helical nanofibers. These nanofibers are evolved from the helical cables ornamented with entwining nanofibers upon natural evaporation of the solution in a mixture with a THF/methanol ratio of 3:7. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermosensitive diethylene glycol‐derived poly(L ‐glutamate) homopolypeptides (i.e., poly‐L ‐EG2‐Glu) with different molecular weights (MW) (Mn,GPC = 5380–32520) were synthesized via the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of EG2‐L ‐glutamate N‐carboxyanhydride (EG2‐Glu‐NCA) in N,N‐dimethylformamide solution at 50 °C. Their molecular structure, conformation transition, liquid crystal (LC) phase behavior, lower critical solution temperature (LCST) transition, and morphology evolution were thoroughly characterized by means of FTIR, 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, wide angle X‐ray diffraction, polarized optical microscope, transmission electron microscope, and dynamic light scattering. In solid state, the homopolypeptide poly‐L ‐EG2‐Glu presented a conformation transition from α‐helix to β‐sheet with increasing their MW at room temperature, while it mainly assumed an α‐helix of 80–86% in aqueous solution. Poly‐L ‐EG2‐Glu showed a thermotropic LC phase with a transition temperature of about 100 °C in solid state, while it gave a reversible LCST transition of 34–36 °C in aqueous solution. The amphiphilic homopolypeptide poly‐L ‐EG2‐Glu self‐assembled into nanostructures in aqueous solution, and their critical aggregation concentrations decreased with increasing MW. Interestingly, their morphology changed from spherical micelles to worm‐like micelles, then to fiber micelles with increasing MW. This work provides a simple method for the generation of different nanostructures from a thermosensitive biodegradable homopolypeptide. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
