Sulfonated polyaryletherketones (SPAEK) bearing four sulfonic acid groups on the phenyl side groups were synthesized. The benzophenone moiety of polymer backbone was further reduced to benzydrol group with sodium borohydride. The membranes were crosslinked by acid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts reaction without sacrifice of sulfonic acid groups and ion exchange capacity (IEC) values. Crosslinked membranes with the same IEC value but different water uptake could be prepared. The optimal crosslinking condition was investigated to achieve lower water uptake, better chemical stability (Fenton's test), and higher proton conductivity. In addition, the hydrophilic ionic channels from originally course and disordered could be modified to be narrow and continuous by this crosslinking method. The crosslinked membranes, CS4PH-40-PEKOH (IEC = 2.4 meq./g), reduced water uptake from 200 to 88% and the weight loss was reduced from 11 to 5% during the Fenton test compared to uncrosslinked one (S4PH-40-PEK). The membrane showed comparable proton conductivity (0.01–0.19 S/cm) to Nafion 212 at 80°C from low to high relative humidity (RH). Single H2/O2 fuel cell based on the crosslinked SPAEK with catalyst loading of 0.25 mg/cm2 (Pd/C) exhibited a peak power density of 220.3 mW/cm2, which was close to that of Nafion 212 (214.0 mW/cm2) at 80°C under 53% RH. These membranes provide a good option as proton exchange membrane with high ion exchange capacity for fuel cells.  相似文献

Partially sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) (PESS) was synthesized and methacrylated via reaction with glycidyl methacrylate (PESSGMA) and cross‐linked via radical polymerization with styrene and vinyl‐phosphonic acid (VPA). The chemical structures of the synthesized pre‐polymers were characterized via FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopic methods and molecular weight was determined via GPC. Membranes of these polymers were prepared via solution casting method. The crosslinking of the PESS polymer reduced IEC, proton conductivity, swelling in water, and methanol permeability of the membranes while increasing the modulus and the glass transition temperature. However, the introduction of the VPA comonomer increased the proton conductivity while maintaining excellent resistance to methanol cross‐over, which was significantly higher as compared with both PESS and the commercial Nafion membranes. Membranes of PESSGMA copolymers incorporating VPA, exhibited proton conductivity values at 60 °C in the range of 16–32 mS cm−1 and methanol permeability values in the range of 6.52 × 10−9 – 1.92 × 10−8 cm2 s−1. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel sulfonated diamine, 4,4′‐bis(4‐amino‐3‐trifluoromethylphenoxy) biphenyl 3,3′‐disulfonic acid (F‐BAPBDS), was successfully synthesized by nucleophilic aromatic substitution of 4,4′‐dihydroxybiphenyl with 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride, followed by reduction and sulfonation. A series of sulfonated polyimides of high molecular weight (SPI‐x, x represents the molar percentage of the sulfonated monomer) were prepared by copolymerization of 1,4,5,8‐naphathlenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA) with F‐BAPBDS and nonsulfonated diamine. Flexible and tough membranes of high mechanical strength were obtained by solution casting and the electrolyte properties of the polymers were intensively investigated. The copolymer membranes exhibited excellent oxidative stability due to the introducing of the CF3 groups. The SPI membranes displayed desirable proton conductivity (0.52×10−1–0.97×10−1 S·cm−1) and low methanol permeability (less than 2.8×10−7 cm2·s−1). The highest proton conductivity (1.89×10−1 S·cm−1) was obtained for the SPI‐90 membrane at 80°C, with an IEC of 2.12 mequiv/g. This value is higher than that of Nafion 117 (1.7×10−1 S·cm−1). Furthermore, the hydrolytic stability of the obtained SPIs is better than the BDSA and ODADS based SPIs due to the hydrophobic CF3 groups which protect the imide ring from being attacked by water molecules, in spite of its strong electron‐withdrawing behaviors.  相似文献

A bisphenol monomer (2,5‐dimethoxy)phenylhydroquinone was prepared and further polymerized to obtain poly(arylene ether ketone) copolymers containing methoxy groups. After demethylation and sulfobutylation, a series of novel poly(arylene ether ketone)s bearing pendant sulfonic acid group (SPAEKs) with different sulfonation content were obtained. The chemical structures of all the copolymers were analyzed by 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. Flexible and tough membranes with reasonably good mechanical properties were prepared. The resulting side‐chain‐type SPAEK membranes showed good dimensional stability, and their water uptake and swelling ratio were lower than those of conventional main‐chain‐type SPAEK membranes with similar ion exchange capacity. Proton conductivities of these side‐chain‐type sulfonated copolymers were higher than 0.01 S/cm and increased gradually with increasing temperature. Their methanol permeability values were in the range of 1.97 × 10?7–5.81 × 10?7 cm2/s, which were much lower than that of Nafion 117. A combination of suitable proton conductivities, low water uptake, low swelling ratio, and high methanol resistance for these side‐chain‐type SPAEK films indicated that they may be good candidate material for proton exchange membrane in fuel cell applications. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel phenolphthalein‐containing sulfonated poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide)s (sPAEPP) with various sulfonation degrees were synthesized by direct polycondensation. The structure of sPAEPP was confirmed by 1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR, and IR spectroscopy. The high‐molecular weight of these polymers was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The transparent, tough, and flexible membranes could be achieved by solution casting. The macroscopic properties and microstructure of the obtained membranes were investigated in detail. The results showed that these sPAEPP membranes displayed excellent properties in terms of swelling, proton conductivity, and methanol permeability. For example, sPAEPP‐100 membrane exhibited an appropriate water uptake of 33.1%, a swelling ratio of only 11.7% (lower than 20.1% of Nafion 117), a proton conductivity of 0.11 S cm?1 (similar to that of Nafion 117) at 80 °C, and a methanol permeability of 4.82 × 10?7 cm2 s?1. Meanwhile, it also presented outstanding oxidative stability. Atomic force microscope (AFM) micrographs showed that the hydrophilic domains of the sPAEPP‐100 membrane formed connected and narrow ionic channels, which contributed to its high proton conductivity and good dimensional stability. As a result, sPAEPP‐100 membrane displays excellent application prospect for fuel cells. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2019 , 57, 1097–1104  相似文献

Novel side‐chain‐type sulfonated poly(arylene ether) with pendant sulfoalkyl group copolymers (PSA‐SPAE‐6F) have been synthesized by direct copolymerization from a new sulfonated monomer, sodium 3‐(4‐(2,6‐difluorobenzoyl)phenyl)propane‐1‐sulfonate. The sulfonate content could be easily controlled by adjusting the sulfonated and the unsulfonated monomer feed ratio. The obtained copolymers all show good thermal and mechanical properties. It should be noted that the most highly sulfonated copolymer, PSA‐SPAE‐6F90 with an ion exchange capacity of 1.30 mequiv · g−1, shows a proton conductivity of 0.11 S · cm−1 and a water swelling ratio of only 12.9% at 100 °C, which indicates its high proton conductivity and excellent dimensional stability in hot water.

This work concerns the development of hybrid organic/inorganic membranes from styrenic phosphonic polymers. The phosphonic charge, composed phosphonic polymers grafted onto silica nanoparticles, was obtained by “grafting onto” method. It consists of synthesizing first the polymer, and then the terminal functions of the latter react with silanol groups of silica. The phosphonated polymer was isolated in two steps, that is, an ATRP polymerization of 4‐chloromethylstyrene followed by Mickaelïs‐Arbusov reaction. After the grafting onto silica, membranes are prepared through formulation containing the charge and the polymer matrix PVDF‐HFP, which are dispersed in DMF. The acid form is obtained by hydrolysis in chlorydric acid. The membrane possessing a 40 wt % charge ratio (IEC = 1.08 meq g?1) was selected as reference. A proton conductivity of 65 mS cm?1 at 80 °C was measured in immersed conditions. When the membrane is no more immersed, the value decreases drastically (0.21 mS cm?1 at 120 °C and 25% RH). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Sulfonated poly(ether sulfone)s containing binaphthyl units (BNSHs) were successfully prepared for fuel cell application. BNSHs, which have very simple structures, were easily synthesized by postsulfonation of poly(1,1′‐dinaphthyl ether phenyl sulfone)s and gave tough, flexible, and transparent membranes by solvent casting. The BNSH membranes showed low water uptake compared to a typical sulfonated poly(ether ether sulfone) (BPSH‐40) membrane with a similar ion exchange capacity (IEC) value and water insolubility, even with a high IEC values of 3.19 mequiv/g because of their rigid and bulky structures. The BNSH‐100 membrane (IEC = 3.19 mequiv/g) exhibited excellent proton conductivity, which was comparable to or even higher than that of Nafion 117, over a range of 30–95% relative humidity (RH). The excellent proton conductivity, especially under low RH conditions, suggests that the BNSH‐100 membrane has excellent proton paths because of its high IEC value, and water insolubility due to the high hydrophobicity of the binaphthyl structure. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ether ketone)s bearing pendent sulfonate groups (SPEK‐x/y/z) have been successfully synthesized via copolyacylation of a presulfonated monomer SBP and two isomeric AB‐type self‐condensable comonomers, that is, 4‐phenoxybenzoic acid (p‐POBA) and 3‐phenoxybenzoic acid (m‐POBA). Proton‐exchange membranes (PEMs) with precisely controlled ion‐exchange capacity (IEC) and high strength can be readily prepared from these ionomers. PEMs prepared from p‐POBA other than m‐POBA exhibit much higher dimensional stability and proton conductivity at elevated temperature above 60 °C, showing prominent isomeric (para vs. meta) effects of polymer structural units. Furthermore, properties of PEMs prepared from p‐POBA are optimized by tuning IEC. SPEK‐1.0/2.2/0 with an IEC of 1.84 mmol g?1 exhibits acceptable swelling, much higher proton conductivity, and lower methanol permeability than commercial Nafion 115, implying potential application in direct methanol fuel cells.

A series of poly(arylene ether ether nitrile)s with different chain lengths of the alkylsulfonates (SPAEEN‐x: x refers number of the methylene units) are successfully synthesized for fuel cell applications. The polymers produced flexible and transparent membranes by solvent casting. The resulting membranes display a high thermal stability, oxidative stability, and higher proton conductivity than that of Nafion 117 at 80 °C and 95% relative humidity (RH). Furthermore, the SPAEEN‐12 with the longest alkylsulfonated side chain exhibits a higher proton conductivity at 30% RH than that of SPAEEN‐6 despite the lower IEC value, which indicates that the introduction of longer alkylsufonated side chains to the polymer main chain induces an efficient proton conduction by the formation of a well‐developed phase‐separated morphology. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether sulfone) multiblock copolymers bearing perfluorosulfonic functions (ps‐PES‐FPES), with ionic exchange capacity (IEC) ranging between 0.9 and 1.5 meq H+/g, are synthesized by regioselective bromination of partially fluorinated poly(arylene ether sulfone) multiblock copolymers (PES‐FPES), followed by Ullman coupling reaction with lithium 1,1,2,2‐tetrafluoro‐2‐(1,1,2,2‐tetrafluoro‐2‐iodoethoxy)ethanesulfonate. The PES‐FPES are prepared by aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction by an original approach, that is, “one pot two reactions synthesis.” The chemical structures of polymers are analyzed by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy. The resulted ionomers present two distinct glass transitions and α relaxations revealing phase separation between the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic domains. The phase separation is observed at much lower block lengths of ps‐PES‐FPES as compared with the literature. AFM and SANS observations supported the phase separation, the hydrophilic domains are well dispersed but the connectivity to each other depends on the ps‐PES block lengths. The thermomechanical behavior, the water up‐take, and the conductivity of the ps‐PES‐FPES membranes are compared with those of Nafion 117® and randomly functionalized polysulfone (ps‐PES). Conductivities close or higher to those of Nafion 117® are obtained. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2015 , 53, 1941–1956  相似文献

A series of soluble, benzimidazole‐based polymers containing sulfonic acid groups (SuPBI) has been synthesized. SuPBI membranes resist extensive swelling in water but are poor proton conductors. When blended with high ion exchange capacity (IEC) sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK), a polymer that has high proton conductivity but poor mechanical integrity, ionic crosslinks form reducing the extent of swelling. The effect of sulfonation of PBI on crosslinking in these blends was gauged through comparison with nonsulfonated analogs. Sulfonic acid groups present in SuPBI compensate for acid groups involved in crosslinking, thereby increasing IEC and proton conductivity of the membrane. When water uptake and proton conductivity were compared to the IEC of blends containing either sulfonated or nonsulfonated PBI, no noticeable distinction between PBI types could be made. Comparisons were also made between these blends and pure SPEEK membranes of similar IEC. Blend membranes exhibit slightly lower maximum proton conductivity than pure SPEEK membranes (60 vs. 75 mS cm?1) but had significantly enhanced dimensional stability upon immersion in water, especially at elevated temperature (80 °C). Elevated temperature measurements in humid environments show increased proton conductivity of the SuPBI membranes when compared with SPEEK‐only membranes of similar IEC (c.f. 55 for the blend vs. 42 mS cm?1 for SPEEK at 80 °C, 90% relative humidity). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of highly sulfonated, ether‐containing polybenzimidazoles (SOPBI) with controlled sulfonation degrees were synthesized from various stoichiometric ratio mixtures of sodium 6,6'‐oxybis(3‐carboxybenzenesulfonate) (SODBA), 4,4'‐oxydibenzoic acid (ODBA), and 3,3'‐diaminobenzidine (DAB) by solution copolycondensation in poly(phosphoric acid). The resulting sulfonated polymers were further sulfonated by grafting of pendant sulfonic acid chains via a reaction of 1,3‐propane sultone with lithiated‐N of the imidazole rings in the polymer backbone, yielding materials with high, absolute IEC values (3.42–4.15 meq g?1). Due to self‐neutralization, the solid state polymers possessed “free” acid content of 1.40 to 2.15 meq g?1, were soluble in organic solvents yet insoluble in aqueous solution, while displaying proton conductivites (11–47 mS cm?1) at elevated temperatures (80 °C, 95% RH). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of multiblock poly(phenylene ether nitrile)s with pendant sulfoalkoxyl side chains have been developed as proton exchange membranes for fuel cells. The membranes were obtained by a solution casting method and exhibited good thermal stability, flexibility, and mechanical strength. The membranes displayed well‐developed microphase separation, which largely contributed to their excellent ion conduction ability. One of the new membranes with a low ion exchange capacity of 1.57 mequiv g?1 showed higher proton conductivity than Nafion 212 over the entire RH range (30–95%). The maximum power output generated in a single cell test reached up to 0.754, 0.640, and 0.414 W cm?2 at 70 °C under 80%, 50%, and 30% RH conditions, respectively. The current density of the membrane obtained at 0.6 V (I 0.6) was as high as 640 mA cm?2, which was much higher than that of Nafion 212 (375 mA cm?2 at 30% RH), suggesting its superiority for a more rapid system start‐up. Furthermore, the in situ durability test at 50% RH was performed at a constant current loading, and the membrane did not show any significant voltage reduction over the 400 h testing period. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The possibility of developing low‐cost commercial grafted and sulfonated Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF‐g‐PSSA) membranes as proton exchange membranes for fuel cell applications have been investigated. PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes were systematically prepared and examined with the focus of understanding how the polymer microstructure (degree of grafting and sulfonation, ion‐exchange capacity, etc) affects their methanol permeability, water uptake, and proton conductivity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize the changes of the membrane's microstructure after grafting and sulfonation. The results showed that the PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes exhibited good thermal stability and lower methanol permeability. The proton conductivity of PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes was also measured by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method. It was found that the proton conductivity of PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes depends on the degree of sulfonation. All the sulfonated membranes show high proton conductivity at 92°C, in the range of 27 to 235 mScm−1, which is much higher than that of Nafion212 (102 mScm−1 at 80°C). The results indicated that the PVDF‐g‐PSSA membranes are particularly promising membranes to be used as polymer electrolyte membranes due to their excellent stability, low methanol permeability, and high proton conductivity.  相似文献

A series of sulfonated poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone)s statistical copolymers with high molecular weights were synthesized via an aromatic nucleophilic substitution polymerization. The sulfonation content (SC), defined as the number of sulfonic acid groups contained in an average repeat unit, could be controlled by the feed ratios of monomers. Flexible and strong membranes in sodium sulfonate form could be prepared by the solution casting method, and readily transformed to their proton forms by treating them in 2 N sulfuric acid. The polymers showed high Tgs, which increased with an increase in SC. Membranes prepared from the present sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone ketone) copolymers containing the hexafluoroisopropylidene moiety (SPEEKK‐6F) and copolymers containing the pendant 3,5‐ditrifluoromethylphenyl moiety (SPEEKK‐6FP) had lower water uptakes and lower swelling ratios in comparison with previously prepared copolymers containing 6F units. All of the polymers possessed proton conductivities higher than 1 × 10?2 S/cm at room temperature, and proton conductivity values of several polymers were comparable to that of Nafion at high relative humidity. Their thermal stability, oxidative stability, and mechanical properties were also evaluated. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 2299–2310, 2006  相似文献

Three series of fully aromatic ionomers with naphthalene moieties and pendant sulfobenzoyl side chains were prepared via K2CO3 mediated nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions. The first series consisted of poly(arylene ether)s prepared by polycondensations of 2,6‐difluoro‐2′‐sulfobenzophenone (DFSBP) and 2,6‐dihydroxynaphthalene or 2,7‐dihydroxynaphthalene (2,7‐DHN). In the second series, copoly(arylene ether nitrile)s with different ion‐exchange capacities (IECs) were prepared by polycondensations of DFSBP, 2,6‐difluorobenzonitrile (DFBN), and 2,7‐DHN. In the third series, bis(4‐fluorophenyl)sulfone was used instead of DFBN to prepare copoly(arylene ether sulfone)s. Thus, all the ionomers had sulfonic acid units placed in stable positions close to the electron withdrawing ketone link of the side chains. Mechanically strong proton‐exchange membranes with IECs between 1.1 and 2.3 meq g−1 were cast from dimethylsulfoxide solutions. High thermal stability was indicted by high degradation temperatures between 266 and 287 °C (1 °C min−1 under air) and high glass transition temperatures between 245 and 306 °C, depending on the IEC. The copolymer membranes reached proton conductivities of 0.3 S cm−1 under fully humidified conditions. At IECs above ∼1.6 meq g−1, the copolymer membranes reached higher proton conductivities than Nafion® in the range between −20 and 120 °C. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of sulfonated poly(aryl ether ketone)s (SPAEKs) were prepared by aromatic nucleophilic polycondensation of 2,6‐dihydroxynaphthalene with 5,5′‐carbonyl‐bis(2‐fluorobenzenesulfonate) and 4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone. The structure and degree of sulfonation (DS) of the SPAEKs were characterized using 1H NMR spectroscopy. The experimentally observed DS values were close to the expected values derived from the starting material ratios. The thermal stabilities of the SPAEKs were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, which showed that in acid and sodium salt forms they were thermally stable in air up to about 240 and 380 °C, respectively. Transparent membranes cast from the directly polymerized SPAEKs exhibited good mechanical properties in both dry and hydrated states. The dependence of water uptake and of membrane swelling on the DS at different temperatures was studied. SPAEK membranes with a DS from 0.72 to 1.60 maintained adequate mechanical properties after immersion in water at 80 °C for 24 h. The proton conductivity of SPAEK membranes with different degrees of sulfonation was measured as a function of temperature. The proton conductivity of the SPAEK films increased with increased DS, and the highest room temperature conductivity (4.2 × 10?2 S/cm) was recorded for a SPAEK membrane with a DS of 1.60, which further increased to 1.1 × 10?1 S/cm at 80 °C. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
