A highly systematic size series of Ziegler catalysts with similar porosities and surface textures are synthesized by varying the stirring speed during the MgCl2 support synthesis. Besides the mean particle size, the only substantial difference observed between the various catalysts is the size and number of nodules per particle. Varying the mean diameter of the catalyst particles between 1.5 and 11.9 µm, leads to a pronounced impact on the activity in ultra‐high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) polymerization, while the Mw capabilities are only affected to a limited extend. In addition, it is observed that both the Mws as the polymer bulk density (BD) increases during the course of the polymerization. This particularity allows to optimize the Mw and/or BD at a set polymer size, by tuning the catalyst particle size. This is particularly interesting in UHMWPE production, as control of the morphological and structural properties of the UHMWPE reactor powders are critical for efficient processing as well as the performance of the final product. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, an iron oxide (Fe3O4)/polystyrene (PS)/poly(N‐isopropylacryl amide‐co‐methacrylic acid) [P(NIPAAM–MAA)] thermosensitive magnetic composite latex was synthesized by the method of two‐stage emulsion polymerization. The Fe3O4 particles were prepared by a traditional coprecipitation method and then surface‐treated with either a PAA oligomer or lauric acid to form a stable ferrofluid. The first stage for the synthesis of the thermosensitive magnetic composite latex was to synthesize PS in the presence of a ferrofluid by emulsion polymerization to form Fe3O4/PS composite latex particles. Following the first stage of reaction, the second stage of polymerization was carried out with N‐isopropylacryl amide and methacrylic acid as monomers and with Fe3O4/PS latex as seeds. The Fe3O4/PS/[P(NIPAAM–MAA)] thermosensitive magnetic particles were thus obtained. The effects of the ferrofluids on the reaction kinetics, morphology, and particle size of the latex were discussed. A reaction mechanism was proposed in accordance with the morphology observation of the latex particles. The thermosensitive property of the thermosensitive magnetic composite latex was also studied. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 3062–3072, 2007  相似文献

In this work, Fe3O4/polystyrene/poly(N‐isopropylacryl amide‐co‐methylacrylate acid) (Fe3O4/PS/P(NIPAAM‐co‐MAA)) magnetic composite latex was synthesized by the method of two stage emulsion polymerization. In this reaction system, 2,2′‐azobis(2‐methyl propionamidine) dihydrochloride (AIBA) was used as initiator to initiate the first stage reaction and second stage reaction. The Fe3O4 particles were prepared by a traditional coprecipitation method. Fe3O4 particles were surface treated by either PAA oligomer or lauric acid to form the stable ferrofluid. The first stage for the synthesis of magnetic composite latex was to synthesize PS in the presence of ferrofluid by soapless emulsion polymerization to form the Fe3O4/PS composite latex particles. Following the first stage of reaction, the second stage of polymerization was carried out by the method of soapless emulsion polymerization with NIPAAM and MAA as monomers and Fe3O4/PS latex as seeds. The magnetic composite particles, Fe3O4/PS/P(NIPAAM‐co‐MAA), were thus obtained. The mechanism of the first stage reaction and second stage reaction were investigated. Moreover, the effects of PAA and lauric acid on the reaction kinetics, morphology, and particle size distribution were studied. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work is an extension of a communication reported by two of the authors [Carro and Herrera‐Ordoñez, Macromol Rapid Commun 2006, 27, 274], where bimodal particle size distributions (PSD), obtained by asymmetric flow‐field flow fractionation (AFFF, AF4), were taken as evidence of certain degree of stability of primary particles. Now, emulsion polymerizations of styrene were performed under conditions employed before by other researchers, intending to examine if the behavior observed is general. The number of particles (N) and PSD were studied by means of dynamic light scattering and AF4. By the later, bimodal PSDs were detected in all cases, where the population corresponding to primary particles (diameter <20 nm) depends on reaction conditions. Regarding N, AF4 results show that it is constant during interval II, in contrast to DLS results. Primary particle coagulation was evidenced as minimums in N evolution and the rate of polymerization curves, monitored by calorimetry and gravimetry, which are enhanced when higher particle number is generated and/or the ionic strength is increased. These results suggest that particle coagulation is not as extensive as it would be expected according to the coagulative theory. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The semicontinuous polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in heterogeneous medium under monomer‐starved conditions is reported here. The effect of monomer addition rate on kinetics, particle size, particle number, and PMMA average molar masses are reported. This process permits the synthesis of high‐solid content latexes containing nano‐sized particles (<40 nm) with narrow particle size distributions [(Dw/Dn) < 1.1]. Moreover, the molar masses (Mn ≈ 0.3–1.2 × 106 g/mol) are much lower than those expected by chain transfer to monomer, which is the typical termination mechanism in 0–1 emulsion and microemulsion reactions. Both particle size and average molar masses decrease as the rate of monomer addition is diminished. Possible explanations for this process are provided. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The applicability of latex particle supports for non‐Cp type metallocene catalysts for ethylene polymerization is presented. Polystyrene latex particles were prepared by miniemulsion polymerization and functionalized with poly(ethyleneoxide)chains and pyridyl groups on the surface. These latex particles were chosen to demonstrate that a support with nucleophilic substituents on the surface can act as a carrier for a (phenoxy‐imine) titanium complex (titanium FI‐catalyst) to produce ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The composition of the support, the concentration of pyridyl groups on the surface, and the crosslinking of the support were optimized to provide a system where the FI‐catalyst resulted in the formation of polyethylene with a Mw of more than 6,000,000 and a relatively narrow molecular weight distribution of 3.0 ± 0.5. High activities for long polymerization times greater than 6 h resulted in a catalyst system exhibiting productivities of up to 15,000 g PE/g cat. or 7,000,000 g PE/g Ti. The resulting polymer properties showed that nucleophilic groups on the latex particle support did not negatively impact the catalyst by blocking the active site but instead created a stable environment for the titanium catalyst. In particular, pyridyl groups on the surface of the latex particle stabilized the catalyst system probably by trapping trimethylaluminium. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(N‐vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) is well known for its thermoresponsive behavior in aqueous solutions. PVCL combines useful and important properties; it is biocompatible polymer with the phase transition in the region of physiological temperature (32–38 °C). This combination of properties allows consideration of PVCL as a material for design biomedical devices and use in drug delivery systems. In this work, PVCL based temperature‐sensitive crosslinked particles (microgels) were synthesized in a batch reactor to analyze the effect of the crosslinker, initiator, surfactant, temperature, and VCL concentration on polymerization process and final microgels characteristics. The mean particle diameters at different temperatures and the volume phase‐transition temperature of the final product were analyzed. To obtain information about the inner structure of microgel particles, semicontinuous polymerizations were carried out and the evolution of the hydrodynamic average particle diameters at different temperatures of the microgel synthesized was investigated. In the case of microgel particles obtained in a batch reactor the size and the swelling‐de‐swelling behavior as a function of the temperature of the medium can be tuned by modulating the reaction variables. When the microgel particles were synthesized in a semibatch reactor different swelling‐de‐swelling behaviors were observed depending on particles inner structure. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The aim of this study is to improve the dielectric and mechanical properties of HDPE/BaTiO3 composites by binary BaTiO3 particles, when the volume fraction of BaTiO3 is constant. In this study, it was found that the pack density of binary BaTiO3 particles in HDPE/BaTiO3 composite relies on particle ratio and volume fraction of small particles. It is found that the addition of 50 vol % 1600 nm BaTiO3 particles can boost the dielectric constant of HDPE control from 2 to 30 (14 times higher) at 40 Hz and 19 (8.5 times higher) at 40 MHz, respectively. When the particle ratio was 4, the substitution of 10 vol % 1600 nm BaTiO3 particles by 10 vol % 400 nm BaTiO3 particles can further enhance the dielectric constant of HDPE/L‐BT (10/10) from 30 to 50 (67% increase) at 40 Hz and from 19 to 42 (121% increase) at 40 MHz, respectively, without greatly influencing the volume resistivity of HDPE composites. In addition, the thermal conductivity of HDPE with binary BaTiO3 particles were all above 2.0 W/(m•K). © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. We have successfully demonstrated the preparation of poly(n‐butyl acrylate)‐b‐polystyrene particles without any coagulation by two‐step emulsifier‐free, organotellurium‐mediated living radical emulsion polymerization (emulsion TERP) using poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA)–methyltellanyl (TeMe) (PMAA30‐TeMe) (degree of polymerization of PMAA, 30) and 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanovaleric acid) (V‐501). The final particle size was ~30 nm and second particle nucleation was not observed throughout the polymerization. Mn increased linearly in both steps with conversion and blocking efficiency was ~75%. PDI was improved by increasing radical entry frequency into each polymer particle due to an increase of the polymerization temperature. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Unseeded semibatch emulsion polymerization of butyl acrylate (BA) using sodium lauryl sulfate as emulsifier and potassium persulfate as initiator was carried out at the conditions where secondary nucleation was probable. This was achieved by using no emulsifier in the initial reactor charge. The effects of changes in monomer emulsion feed rate, initiator concentration and distribution, emulsifier concentration in the feed, and temperature on the evolution of particle size averages and distribution were investigated. Bimodal particle size distributions (PSD) were obtained for most of the latexes. Inhibition effects were found to be important in the development of PSD. Primary particle formation occurred through micellar nucleation, whereas secondary nucleation probably occurred through homogenous nucleation. The polydispersity index (PDI) of the latexes increased with the decreasing monomer emulsion feed rate. The application of a larger amount of initiator to the reactor charge or using a higher temperature, reduced the formation of secondary particles and resulted in a formation of an unimodal PSD. The overall steady‐state rate of polymerization was found to approach the rate of monomer addition (RpRa ), if the emulsifier concentration in the aqueous phase was appreciable. This is different from the correlation 1/Rp = 1/K + 1/Ra obtained for the BA semibatch process with neat monomer feed. This suggests that different rate expressions can be used for BA semibatch emulsion polymerization at different conditions. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A laboratory‐scale continuous reaction system using a stirred tank reactor was assembled in our laboratory to study the dispersion polymerization of vinyl monomers in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). The apparatus was equipped with a suitable downstream separation section to collect solid particles entrained in the effluent stream from the reactor, whose monomer concentration could be measured online with a gas chromatograph. The dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate in scCO2 was selected as a model process to be investigated in the apparatus. The experiments were performed at 65 °C and 25 MPa with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator and a reactive polysiloxane macromonomer as a surfactant to investigate the effect of the mean residence time of the reaction mixture on the monomer conversion, polymerization rate, polymer molecular weight, and particle size distribution. The results were compared with those obtained in batch polymerizations carried out under similar operative conditions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An in‐depth study on the kinetics of the cationic emulsion polymerization of styrene in a batch reactor is presented. This study is focused on the effect of the amount of the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), using two different cationic initiators: 2,2′‐azobisisobutyramidine dihydrochloride (AIBA), 2,2′‐azobis (N,N′‐dimethyleneisobutyramidine) dihydrochloride (ADIBA), on kinetics and colloidal features such as conversion, number of particles, number average of radicals per particle, mean particle diameter, and particle size distribution (PSD) of the polystyrene latices obtained by emulsion polymerization in a batch reactor. Furthermore, the results of the cationic emulsion polymerization were compared with its homologous anionic case. Using DTAB as cationic surfactant an expected increase in the total rate of polymerization was observed when the DTAB concentration increased. However, the total number of particles increased much more than in the anionic system. On the other hand, a dependence on the particle size of the rate of polymerization per particle together with the average number of radicals per particle was found. These differences between cationic and anionic emulsion polymerizations were explained taking into account the limited particle coagulation observed with cationic surfactants, and the high rate of radical formation of cationic initiators. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Aqueous acrylic‐polyurethane (AC–PU) hybrid emulsions were prepared by semibatch emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of four polyurethane (PU) dispersions. The PU dispersions were synthesized with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), 1000 and 2000 molecular weight (MW) poly(neopentyl) adipate, 1000 MW polytetramethyleneetherglycol, butanediol (BD), and dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA). MMA was added in the monomer emulsion feed. We studied the effect of the use of different PU seed particles on the rate of polymerization, the particle size and distribution, the number of particles, and the average number of radicals per particle. The PU rigidity was controlled by varying the polyol chemical structure, the polyol MW (Mn), and by adding BD. The monomer feed rate was varied to study its influence on the process. It was observed that the PU particles that had been prepared with a higher MW polyol swelled better with MMA before the monomer‐starved conditions occurred. There seemed to be no significant discrepancies between the series with different PU seeds in the monomer‐starved conditions. The overall conversion depended on the monomer addition rate, and the polymerization rate acquired a constant value that was comparable to the value of the monomer addition rate. The instantaneous conversion increased slightly. The average particle size increased, and the total particle number in the reactor was constant and similar to the number of PU particles in the initial charge. The average number of radicals per particle increased. The differences between the system with a constant particle number and average number of radicals per particle and the system with a fixed radical concentration are discussed. The semibatch emulsion polymerization of MMA in the presence of PU particles studied was better compared to the system with a fixed radical concentration. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Series of star‐shaped three arms oligoimides (SOI) with terminal amino groups with narrow MWD ((Mw/Mn = 1.1–2) was synthesized by the one‐stage high‐temperature polycondensation in molten benzoic acid at 140 °C. The (B3+AB′) approach with the “slow addition of monomer” method was used for this synthesis, where B3 is 2,4,6‐tris(4‐aminophenoxy)toluene and AB′ is 3‐aminophenoxy phthalic acid. The SOI arm's length was controlled by the AB′/B3 mole ratio of 10:1, 20:1, 40:1, and 100:1. By the reaction of SOI's terminal amino groups with acetic anhydride, corresponding acetamide derivatives were obtained. SOI synthesized are soluble in selected organic solvents. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2018 , 56, 2004–2009  相似文献

Particle nucleation in the seeded emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of Aerosol‐MA emulsifier micelles and in the absence of monomer droplets (interval III) was investigated. The seed particles were swollen with different amounts of the styrene monomer before the experiments. A larger number of polymer particles formed in interval III than in the corresponding seeded batch operation in the presence of monomer droplets. The increase in the number of particles could be attributed to the reduced rate of growth of new particles, which retarded the depletion of emulsifier micelles. The number of secondary particles initially increased with the initial polymer weight ratio in the seed particles (wp0) but decreased at a higher range of wp0, after reaching a maximum at wp0 = 0.60, and eventually was reduced to zero. At high values of wp0 (>0.75), polymerization occurred in the seed particles, whereas few or no new particles were formed despite the presence of micelles. The cessation of particle formation at high conversions was ascertained with a semibatch process in which the neat monomer feed was added to the reaction vessel containing the seed particles and emulsifier micelles. For wp0 > 0.85, the emulsifier micelles were disintegrated to stabilize the seed particles with no secondary particle formation. The possible reasons for the cessation of particle formation at high wp0 were examined. The size distribution of secondary particles showed a positive skewness in terms of volume because of the declining rate of growth for particles, together with a low rate of growth for small particles. The distribution breadth of new particles sharpened with increasing wp0. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 1652–1663, 2002  相似文献

Amino‐functionalized hollow microporous organic nanospheres (NH2‐HMONs) were successfully synthesized by a combination of hyper‐crosslinking mediated self‐assembly process and a post‐modification strategy. Benefiting from amino groups and hollow microporous structure, the resultant NH2‐HMONs can be used to immobilize Pd nanoparticles (Pd@NH2‐HMONs) and enhance the adsorption capacity for iodine. The obtained Pd@NH2‐HMONs exhibited outstanding catalytic activity for hydrogenation of nitroarenes to aniline analogues. This strategy represents a new method for the preparation of porous organic polymers with special morphologies and functionalizations for potential applications including adsorption, separation, and catalysis. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Magnetic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐methacrylic acid) [P(MMA–MAA)] composite polymer latices were synthesized by two‐stage soapless emulsion polymerization in the presence of magnetite (Fe3O4) ferrofluids. Different types and concentrations of fatty acids were reacted with the Fe3O4 particles, which were prepared by the coprecipitation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) salts to obtain stable Fe3O4 ferrofluids. The Fe3O4/polymer particles were monodisperse, and the composite polymer particle size was approximately 100 nm. The morphology of the magnetic composite polymer latex particles was a core–shell structure. The core was PMMA encapsulating Fe3O4 particles, and the shell was the P(MMA–MAA) copolymer. The carboxylic acid functional groups (COOH) of methacrylic acid (MAA) were mostly distributed on the surface of the composite polymer latex particles. Antibodies (anti‐human immunoglobulin G) were then chemically bound with COOH groups onto the surface of the magnetic core–shell composite latices through the medium of carbodiimide to form the antibody‐coated magnetic latices (magnetic immunolatices). The MAA shell composition of the composite latex could be adjusted to control the number of COOH groups and thus the number of antibody molecules on the magnetic composite latex particles. With a magnetic sorting device, the magnetic immunolatices derived from the magnetic PMMA/P(MMA–MAA) core–shell composite polymer latex performed well in cell‐separation experiments based on the antigen–antibody reaction. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Chemical–physical properties of ultra‐high‐molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) treated by direct fluorination, direct fluorination accompanied with UV irradiation, by XeF2 and by TbF4, were tested by FTIR spectroscopy, visible spectroscopy, 19F and 13C NMR, scanning electron microscopy, XRD, and EPR. Surface energy measurements were carried out. The direct fluorination of UHMWPE is a diffusion‐controlled process, but treatment with XeF2 is a kinetically controlled one. Direct fluorination and direct fluorination accompanied with UV irradiation results mainly in a formation of ? CF2? groups. On the contrary, ? CHF? groups are prevailing in UHMWPE treated with XeF2 and TbF4. Surface texture of UHMWPE treated with XeF2 and with F2 is quite different. Direct fluorination results in a higher polarity of the polymer surface when compared with treatment with XeF2. For the case of direct fluorination, both long‐lived peroxy and fluoroalkylradicals are formed. For the case of treatment with XeF2, only fluoroalkylradicals were detected. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 49:3559–3573, 2011  相似文献

Mesoporous silica particles were grafted with thermoresponsive poly(ethyleneoxide‐b‐N‐vinylcaprolactam), PEO‐b‐PVCL. N‐vinylcaprolactam was first polymerized on particle surfaces using surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI‐ATRP) and then, the poly(ethyleneoxide) blocks were attached to the PVCL chain ends with click chemistry. The sizes, thermoresponsiviness, and colloidal stability of SiO2‐PVCL and SiO2‐PVCL‐b‐PEO particles and their aqueous dispersions were studied by scanning electron microscopy, turbidimetry, dynamic light scattering, zeta sizer, and microcalorimetry. The phase separation temperature of the PEO‐b‐PVCL grafted particles did not considerably differ from that of the SiO2‐PVCL particles. The zeta potential of the grafted particles was close to zero at room temperature but decreased strongly upon heating. The decrease is related to the collapse of the PVCL blocks and correspondingly, the exposure of the silica surface toward the aqueous phase. The colloidal stability of the particles could be enhanced by adding PEO blocks to the chain ends of the PVCL grafts. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A series of linear and lightly crosslinked nanostructured latices was prepared by a sequential multistage semicontinuous emulsion polymerization process alternating styrene (S) and n‐butyl acrylate (BA) monomer feeds five times, that is ten stages, and vice versa, along with several control latices. Transmission electron micrographs of the RuO4‐stained cross sections of nanostructured and copolymer latex particles and films showed that their particle morphologies were not very different from each other, but the nanostructured latex particles were transformed into a nanocomposite film containing both polystyrene (PS) and poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PBA) nanodomains interconnected by their diffuse polymer mixtures (i.e. interlayers). The thermal mechanical behaviors of the nanostructured latex films showed broad but single Tgs slightly higher than those of their counterpart copolymer films. These single Tgs indicated that their major component phases were the diffuse interlayers and that they behaved like pseudopolymer alloys. The minimum film formation temperatures of nanostructured latices capped with PBA and PS, respectively, were 15 °C lower than and equal to those of their counterpart copolymer latices, but their Tgs were about 10 °C higher. Consequently, nanostructured latices enabled us to combine good film formation with high strengths for adhesives and coatings applications. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
