A -algebra is said to have the FS-property if the set of all self-adjoint elements in has a dense subset of elements with finite spectrum. We shall show that this property is not stable under taking the minimal -tensor products even in case of separable nuclear -algebras.

Inspired by a paper of S. Popa and the classification theory of nuclear -algebras, we introduce a class of -algebras which we call tracially approximately finite dimensional (TAF). A TAF -algebra is not an AF-algebra in general, but a ``large' part of it can be approximated by finite dimensional subalgebras. We show that if a unital simple -algebra is TAF then it is quasidiagonal, and has real rank zero, stable rank one and weakly unperforated -group. All nuclear simple -algebras of real rank zero, stable rank one, with weakly unperforated -group classified so far by their -theoretical data are TAF. We provide examples of nonnuclear simple TAF -algebras. A sufficient condition for unital nuclear separable quasidiagonal -algebras to be TAF is also given. The main results include a characterization of simple rational AF-algebras. We show that a separable nuclear simple TAF -algebra satisfying the Universal Coefficient Theorem and having and is isomorphic to a simple AF-algebra with the same -theory.

We prove that a Banach space has the compact range property (CRP) if and only if, for any given -algebra , every absolutely summing operator from into is compact. Related results for -summing operators () are also discussed as well as operators on non-commutative -spaces and -summing operators.

In this paper a K-theoretic classification is given of the C-algebra dynamical systems where is of real rank zero, each is a finite direct sum of matrix algebras over finite connected graphs, and each is induced by an action on each component of the spectrum of . Corresponding to the trivial actions is the K-theoretic classification for real rank zero C-algebras that can be expressed as finite direct sums of matrix algebras over finite graphs obtained in Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. no. 547, vol. 114.

In this note we analyze the -algebra associated with a branched covering both as a groupoid -algebra and as a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. We determine conditions when the algebra is simple and purely infinite. We indicate how to compute the K-theory of several examples, including one related to rational maps on the Riemann sphere.

The Haagerup norm on the tensor product of two -algebras and is shown to be Banach space equivalent to either the Banach space projective norm or the operator space projective norm if and only if either or is finite dimensional or and are infinite dimensional and subhomogeneous. In this paper, we investigate the problem of when a -algebra is commutative through operator-monotonic increasing functions. The principal result is that the function is operator-monotonic increasing on a -algebra if and only if is commutative. Say that a separable, unital -algebra is strongly self-absorbing if there exists an isomorphism such that and are approximately unitarily equivalent -homomorphisms. We study this class of algebras, which includes the Cuntz algebras , , the UHF algebras of infinite type, the Jiang-Su algebra and tensor products of with UHF algebras of infinite type. Given a strongly self-absorbing -algebra we characterise when a separable -algebra absorbs tensorially (i.e., is -stable), and prove closure properties for the class of separable -stable -algebras. Finally, we compute the possible -groups and prove a number of classification results which suggest that the examples listed above are the only strongly self-absorbing -algebras.

Using the functional calculus for a normal operator, we provide a result for generalized Toeplitz operators, analogous to the theorem of Axler and Shields on harmonic extensions of the disc algebra. Besides that result, we prove that if is an injective subnormal weighted shift, then any two nontrivial subspaces invariant under cannot be orthogonal to each other. Then we show that the -algebra generated by and the identity operator contains all the compact operators as its commutator ideal, and we give a characterization of that -algebra in terms of generalized Toeplitz operators. Motivated by these results, we further obtain their several-variable analogues, which generalize and unify Coburn's theorems for the Hardy space and the Bergman space of the unit ball.

We show that there is a continuous map of the unit interval into itself of type which has a trajectory disjoint from the set of recurrent points of , but contained in the closure of . In particular, is not closed. A function of type , with nonclosed set of recurrent points, was found by H. Chu and J. Xiong [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 97 (1986), 361-366]. However, there is no trajectory contained in , since any point in is eventually mapped into . Moreover, our construction is simpler.

We use to show that there is a continuous map of the interval of type for which the set of recurrent points is not an set. This example disproves a conjecture of A. N. Sharkovsky et al., from 1989. We also provide another application of .

Let be a Hilbert -module over the -algebra of all compact operators on a Hilbert space. It is proved that any function which preserves the absolute value of the -valued inner product is of the form , where is a phase function and is an -linear isometry. The result generalizes Molnár's extension of Wigner's classical unitary-antiunitary theorem.

Using topological entropy of automorphisms of -algebras, it is shown that some important facts from the theory of AF algebras do not carry over to the class of algebras.

It is shown that in general one cannot perturb a basic building block into a larger one which almost contains it. The same entropy obstruction used to prove this fact also provides a new obstruction to the known fact that two injective homomorphisms from a building block into an algebra need not differ by an (inner) automorphism when they agree on K-theory.
