In this work, a nonlocal phenomenological behavior model is proposed in order to describe the localization and propagation of stress-induced martensite transformation in shape memory alloy (SMA) wires and thin films. It is a nonlocal extension of an existing local model that was derived from a micromechanical-inspired Gibbs free energy expression. The proposed model uses, besides the local field of the internal variable, namely the martensite volume fraction, a nonlocal counterpart. This latter acts as an additional degree of freedom, which is determined by solving an additional partial differential equation (PDE), derived so as to be equivalent to the integral definition of a nonlocal quantity. This PDE involves an internal length parameter, dictating the global scale at which the nonlocal interactions of the underlying micromechanisms are manifested during phase transformation. Moreover, to account for the unstable softening behavior, the transformation yield force parameter is considered as a gradually decreasing function of the martensite fraction. Possible material and geometric imperfections that are responsible for localization initiation are also considered in this analysis. The obtained constitutive equations are implemented in the Abaqus® finite element code in one and two dimensions. This requires the development of specific finite elements having the nonlocal volume fraction variable as an additional degree of freedom. This implementation is achieved through the UEL user’s subroutine. The effect of martensitic localization on the superelastic global behavior of SMA wire and holed thin plate, subjected to tension loading, is analyzed. Numerical results show that the developed tool correctly captures the commonly observed unstable superelastic behavior characterized by nucleation and propagation of martensitic phase. In particular, they show the influence of the internal length parameter, appearing in the nonlocal model, on the size of the localization area and the stress nucleation peak.  相似文献

The phenomenological SMA equations developed in Part I are used in this second paper to derive the free energy and dissipation of a SMA composite material. The derivation consists of solving a boundary value problem formulated over a mesoscale representative volume element, followed by an averaging procedure to obtain the macroscopic composite constitutive equations. Explicit equations are derived for the transformation tensors that relate the composite transformation strain rate to the phase transformation rate in the fiber and matrix. Some key findings for the two-way SME in a SMA fiber/elastomer matrix composite are that processing-induced residual stresses alter the composite austenite start and martensite start temperatures, as well as the amount of composite strain recovered during a complete cycle of temperature and fiber martensite volume fraction. Relative to the two-way SME response of stiff-matrix composites, it was found that compliant-matrix composites: (1) complete the phase transformation over a narrower temperature range; (2) exhibit greater transformation strain during the reverse transformation; and (3) undergo an incomplete strain cycle during a complete cycle of temperature and fiber martensite volume fraction. Due to the interaction of the fiber and matrix during transformation, macroscopic proportional stressing of the composite results in non-proportional fiber stressing, which in turn causes a small amount of martensitic reorientation to occur simultaneously with the transformation.  相似文献

This paper describes an experimental study of stress-induced martensitic phase transformation in the SMA Nickel-Titanium. The rich local thermo-mechanical interactions that underlie transformation are examined using three-dimensional Digital Image Correlation (strain fields) and infrared imaging (thermal fields). We quantify the complex local interactions between released/absorbed latent heat and the extent of transformation, and explore the characteristics of the phase fronts and the evolution of martensitic volume fraction. We also quantify a strong strain memory in the martensite that forms in the wake of the phase transformation front. The accommodated strain in the martensite will remain constant during loading, even as the existing phase front propagates. There also exists a remarkable strain memory in the martensite that persists from cycle to cycle, indicating that the local elastic stress fields in the martensite are driven by a dislocation structure and martensitic nuclei that largely stabilize during the first loading cycle.  相似文献

Understanding torsional responses of shape memory alloy (SMA) specimens under partial or fully transformed cases with internal loops is of particular importance as the entire response might not be always utilized and only a portion of the entire response (internal loop) might be of significance to designers. In this work, we present experimental results of large complex loading and unloading torsional cycles which were conducted on superelastic SMA wires, under isothermal conditions with the purpose of elucidating the torsional internal loop response during loading and unloading. Such data hereto has not been available in open literature. Utilizing this data, we model the torsional response of superelastic SMA wires subjected to various loading and unloading situations that can result in different extents of transformation.A thermodynamically consistent Preisach model (Rao and Srinivasa, 2013) captures such complex internal loops with a high degree of precision by modeling driving force for phase transformation vs. volume fraction of martensite relationships. This approach is different from capturing purely phenomenological stress–strain or stress–temperature Preisach models. The thermodynamic approach utilized here has broader predictive capability. The model predictions indicate good agreement with the internal loop structures even though only the outer loop information was used for model calibration. The addition of a single inner loop information for model calibration greatly improves the predictions.  相似文献

The thermo-mechanical behavior of polycrystalline shape memory alloy (SMA) under multi-axial loading with varying temperature conditions has been studied by experiments. Recently the research has been extended theoretically and a mechanical model of polycrystalline SMA and the corresponding mesoscopic constitutive equations have been developed. The model presented in this paper is constructed on the basis of the crystal plasticity and the deformation mechanism of SMA. The variants in the crystal grains and the orientations of crystal grains in the polycrystal are considered in the proposed model; the constitutive equations are derived on the basis of the proposed model. The volume fraction of the martensite variants in the transformation process and the influence of the stress state on the transformation process are also considered. Some calculated results obtained by the constitutive equations are presented and compared with the experimental results. It is found that the deformation behavior of SMA under complex loading conditions can be well reproduced by the calculation of the constitutive equations.  相似文献

In this work, we present a macroscopic material model for simulation transformation-induced plasticity, which is an important phenomenon in metal forming processes. The model is formulated within a thermodynamic framework at large strains. In order to account for both, phase transformation and plasticity, yield functions are related to these effects. Then, applying the concept of maximum dissipation evolution equations are obtained for the inelastic strains, the transformation strains, a hardening variable and the volume fraction of martensite. Furthermore the numerical implementation of the constitutive equations into a finite element program is described. In a numerical example we investigate the austenite-to-martensite phase transformation in a shaft subjected to thermo-mechanical loading in a hybrid-forming process.  相似文献

A microstructural finite element (MFE) model is developed to capture the interaction between martensitic transformations and plasticity in NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs). The interaction is modeled through the grain-to-grain redistribution of stress caused by both plasticity and phase transformation, so that each mechanism affects the driving force of the other. A unique feature is that both processes are modeled at a crystallographic level and are allowed to operate simultaneously. The model is calibrated to pseudoelastic data for select single crystals of Ti–50.9at.%Ni. For polycrystals, plasticity is predicted to enhance the overall martensite volume fraction at a given applied stress. Upon unloading, residual stress can induce remnant (retained) martensite. For thermal cycling under load bias, plasticity is observed to limit the net transformation strain/cycle and increase the hysteretic width. Deformation processing, via plastic pre-straining at elevated temperature, is shown to dramatically alter subsequent pseudoelastic response, as well as induce two-way shape memory behavior during no-load thermal cycling. Overall, the model is suitable at smaller imposed strains, where martensite detwinning is not expected to dominate.  相似文献

A finite-strain phase field model for martensitic phase transformation and twinning in shape memory alloys is developed and confronted with the corresponding sharp-interface approach extended to interfacial energy effects. The model is set in the energy framework so that the kinetic equations and conditions of mechanical equilibrium are fully defined by specifying the free energy and dissipation potentials. The free energy density involves the bulk and interfacial energy contributions, the latter describing the energy of diffuse interfaces in a manner typical for phase-field approaches. To ensure volume preservation during martensite reorientation at finite deformation within a diffuse interface, it is proposed to apply linear mixing of the logarithmic transformation strains. The physically different nature of phase interfaces and twin boundaries in the martensitic phase is reflected by introducing two order-parameters in a hierarchical manner, one as the reference volume fraction of austenite, and thus of the whole martensite, and the second as the volume fraction of one variant of martensite in the martensitic phase only. The microstructure evolution problem is given a variational formulation in terms of incremental fields of displacement and order parameters, with unilateral constraints on volume fractions explicitly enforced by applying the augmented Lagrangian method. As an application, size-dependent microstructures with diffuse interfaces are calculated for the cubic-to-orthorhombic transformation in a CuAlNi shape memory alloy and compared with the sharp-interface microstructures with interfacial energy effects.  相似文献

This contribution deals with the nonlinear analysis of shape memory alloy (SMA) adaptive trusses employing the finite element method. Geometrical nonlinearities are incorporated into the formulation together with a constitutive model that describes different thermomechanical behaviors of SMA. It has four macroscopic phases (three variants of martensite and an austenitic phase), and considers different material properties for austenitic and martensitic phases together with thermal expansion. An iterative numerical procedure based on the operator split technique is proposed in order to deal with the nonlinearities in the constitutive formulation. This procedure is introduced into ABAQUS as a user material routine. Numerical simulations are carried out illustrating the ability of the developed model to capture the general behavior of shape memory bars. After that, it is analyzed the behavior of some adaptive trusses built with SMA actuators subjected to different thermomechanical loadings.  相似文献

A constitutive model is developed for the transformation, reorientation and plastic deformation of shape memory alloys (SMAs). It is based on the concept that an SMA is a mixture composed of austenite and martensite, the volume fraction of each phase is transformable with the change of applied thermal-mechanical loading, and the constitutive behavior of the SMA is the combination of the individual behavior of its two phases. The deformation of the martensite is separated into elastic, thermal, reorientation and plastic parts, and that of the austenite is separated into elastic, thermal and plastic parts. Making use of the Tanaka’s transformation rule modified by taking into account the effect of plastic deformation, the constitutive model of the SMA is obtained. The ferroelasticity, pseudoelasticity and shape memory effect of SMA Au-47.5 at.%Cd, and the pseudoelasticity and shape memory effect as well as plastic deformation and its effect of an NiTi SMA, are analyzed and compared with experimental results.  相似文献

This paper presents an investigation of the pseudoelastic transformation of two crystallographic orientations of a single crystal NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA). Both uniaxial tension and notched tension samples are considered with the tensile axes along the [1 0 0] and [1 1 1] directions. The phase transformation is observed using optical techniques in situ. For the uniaxial tension samples, martensite plates and Lüders-band structures are observed. For the notched samples, transformation structures in the [1 0 0] sample appeared predominantly on the sides of the notch and crack tip with stable crack propagation. In the [1 1 1] notched samples transformation occurs directly ahead of the notch and unstable crack propagation is observed. An available work criterion is used to predict the location of the transformation, with good agreement to the experimental observations. The different fracture behavior of the two notched sample orientations is explained utilizing the available work calculations.  相似文献

The effects of microstructure and its evolution on the macroscopic superelastic stress-strain response of polycrystalline Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) are studied by a microstructure-based constitutive model developed in this paper. The model is established on the following basis: (1) the transformation conditions of the unconstrained single crystal SMA microdomain (to be distinguished from the bulk single crystal), which serve as the local criterion for the derivation of overall transformation yield conditions of the polycrystal; (2) the micro- to macro-transition scheme by which the connection between the polycrystal aggregates and the single crystal microdomain is established and the macroscopic transformation conditions of the polycrystal SMA are derived; (3) the quantitative incorporation of three microstructure factors (i.e., nucleation, growth and orientation distribution of martensite) into the modeling. These microstructural factors are intrinsic of specific polycrystal SMA systems and the role of each factor in the macroscopic constitutive response is quantitatively modeled. It is demonstrated that the interplay of these factors will result in different macroscopic transformation kinematics and kinetics which are responsible for the observed macroscopic stress-strain hardening or softening response, the latter will lead to the localization and propagation of transformation bands in TiNi SMA.

Crack growth resistance of shape memory alloys (SMAs) is dominated by the transformation zone in the vicinity of the crack tip. In this study, the transformation toughening behavior of a slowly propagating crack in an SMA under plane strain conditions and mode I deformation is numerically investigated. A small-scale transformation zone is assumed. A cohesive zone model is implemented to simulate crack growth within a finite element scheme. Resistance curves are obtained for a range of parameters that specify the cohesive traction-separation constitutive law. It is found that the choice of the cohesive strength t0 has a great influence on the toughening behavior of the material. Moreover, the reversibility of the transformation can significantly reduce the toughening of the alloy. The shape of the initial transformation zone, as well as that of a growing crack is determined. The effect of the Young's moduli ratio of the martensite and austenite phases is examined.  相似文献

In this paper, a gradient-enhanced 3-D phenomenological model for shape memory alloys using the non-local theory is developed based on a 1-D constitutive model. The method utilizes a non-local field variable in its constitutive framework with an implicit gradient formulation in order to achieve results independent of the finite element discretization. An efficient numerical approach to implement the non-local gradient-enhanced model in finite element codes is proposed. The model is used to simulate stress drop at the onset of transformation, and its performance is evaluated using different experimental data. The potential of the presented numerical approach for behavior of shape memory alloys in eliminating mesh-dependent simulations is validated by conducting various localization problems. The numerical results show that the developed model can simulate the observed unstable behaviors such as stress drop and deviation of local strain from global strain during nucleation and propagation of martensitic phase.  相似文献

As a preliminary step in the nonlinear design of shape memory alloy(SMA) composite structures, the force-displacement characteristics of the SMA layer are studied. The bilinear hysteretic model is adopted to describe the constitutive relationship of SMA material.Under the assumption that there is no point of SMA layer finishing martensitic phase transformation during the loading and unloading process, the generalized restoring force generated by SMA layer is deduced for the case that the simply supported beam vibrates in its first mode. The generalized force is expressed as piecewise-nonlinear hysteretic function of the beam transverse displacement.Furthermore the energy dissipated by SMA layer during one period is obtained by integration, then its dependencies are discussed on the vibration amplitude and the SMA’s strain(Ms-Strain) value at the beginning of martensitic phase transformation. It is shown that SMA’s energy dissipating capacity is proportional to the stiffness difference of bilinear model and nonlinearly dependent on Ms-Strain.The increasing rate of the dissipating capacity gradually reduces with the amplitude increasing. The condition corresponding to the maximum dissipating capacity is deduced for given value of the vibration amplitude. The obtained results are helpful for designing beams laminated with shape memory alloys.  相似文献

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) provide an attractive solid-state actuation alternative to engineers in various fields due to their ability to exhibit recoverable deformations while under substantial loads. Many constitutive models describing this repeatable phenomenon have been proposed, where some models also capture the effects of rate-independent irrecoverable deformations (i.e., plasticity) in SMAs. In this work, we consider a topic not addressed to date: the generation and evolution of irrecoverable viscoplastic strains in an SMA material. Such strains appear in metals subjected to sufficiently high temperatures. The need to account for these effects in SMAs arises when considering one of two situations: the exposure of a conventional SMA material (e.g., NiTi) to high temperatures for a non-negligible amount of time, as occurs during shape-setting, or the utilization of new high temperature shape memory alloys (HTSMAs), where the elevated transformation temperatures induce transformation and viscoplastic behaviors simultaneously. A new three-dimensional constitutive model based on established SMA and viscoplastic modeling techniques is derived that accounts for these behaviors. The numerical implementation of the model is described in detail. Several finite element analysis (FEA) examples are provided, demonstrating the utility of the new model and its implementation in assessing the effects of viscoplastic behaviors in shape memory alloys.  相似文献

Improvement from the pseudo-elastic effect of shape memory alloy (SMA) on the low-velocity impact (LVI) resistance of a composite plate is investigated by the finite element method (FEM).The stiffness matrix of the dynamic finite element equation is established step by step and the martensite fraction is obtained at each time step. The direct Newmark integration method is employed in solving the dynamic finite element equation, while the impact contact force is determined using the modified Hertz's law.It is found that SMA can effectively improve the performance of a composite structure subjected to low-velocity impact.Numerical results show that the deflection of a SMA-hybrid composite plate has been reduced approximately by thirty percent when the volume fraction of the embedded SMA reaches 0.3.  相似文献
