On transfer units and a four-quadrant-diagram for the calculation of heat exchangers
It is shown that the introduction of the known concept of a transfer unit and the use of a four-quadrant diagram leads to a relatively simple and clear computation method for co-current and counter-current heat exchangers.

Summary Reiner defined a numeric, which he called theDeborah Number to represent the ratio of a relaxation time to a natural (observation) time. This implies aMaxwell model but is readily extended to complete relaxation spectra. Successive tests of subjects' performance in reaction time tasks were treated as time series and submitted to spectrum analysis. Rather than revealing the white noise expected by the view that variability is due to random error (equivalent power across frequency), the power spectra revealed colored noise. The slopes of the power spectra did not vary much for tasks differing in memory requirements. Spectrum analysis of time series from the logistic map also showed colored noise in regions on the edge of chaos, showing that the presence of colored noise in cognitive data need not oblige a theoretical account based on a complex, high-dimensional, system.  相似文献

The detailed analysis of the dynamical process of coin tossing is made. Through calculations, it is illustrated how and why the result is extremely sensitive to the initial conditions. It is also shown that, as the initial height of the mass center of the coin increases, the final configuration, i.e. head or tail, becomes more and more sensitive to the initial parameters (the initial velocity angular velocity, and the initial orientation), the coefficient of the air drag, and the energy absorption factor of the surface on which the coin bounces. If we keep the head upward initially but allow a small range for the change of some other initial parameters, the frequency that the final configuration is head, would be 1 if the initial height h of the mass center is sufficiently small, and would be clo to 1/2 if h is sufficiently large. An interesting question is how this frequency changes continuously from 1 to 1/2 as h increases. Detailed calculations show that such a transition is very similar to the transition from laminar to turbulent flows. A basic difference between the transition stage and the completely random stage is indicated: In the completely random stage, the deterministic process of the individual case is extremely sensitive to the initial conditions and the dynamical parameters, out the statistical properties of the ensemble are insensitive to the small changes of the initial conditions and the dynamical parameters. On the contrary, in the transition stage, both the deterministic process of the individual case and the statistical properties of the ensemble are sensitive to the initial conditions and the dynamical parameters. The mechanism for this feature of the transition stage is the existence of the long-train structure in the parameter space. The illuminations of this analysis on some other random phenomena are discussed.  相似文献

It is well known that articulation may cause the electric and thermal conducting properties of a medium to become anisotropic. Extensive experimental data relating to the conductivity of rock were presented in [1], and according to these data the ambient resistance in the case of an orderly arrangement of cracks noticeably depends on the direction along which it is measured; an ellipsoid of resistance anisotropy can be constructed from the measurement results. A pronounced correlation between the orientations of the resistivity extrema and the orientation of the crack system is observed here. A comparison betwen the direction rose of the fractures and the direction rose of the articulation carried out for different regions has shown that they are identical. A crack density tensor T describing the average (with respect to a given volume) geometry of the articulation has been introduced [2, 3]. In the current work, it is proved that T can be effectively used in problems involving anisotropic electrical and thermal conductivity. The resistivity tensor and thermal-conductivity coefficient tensor K, which characterize the anisotropy of the electrical and thermal conducting properties, are expressed in terms of t. The physics and biology that found psychoanalysis account for discontinuous experience only in the presence of nonmeasurable, metaphysical operators; these include the ego and its subsystems as well as biological experience inherited through Lamarckian principles. Complex, self-organizing systems, however, can link biology to experience without metaphysics. They can also account for psychoanalytically relevant behaviors without appealing to stable internal representations. These behaviors include what W. R. Bion called transformation in O and its corollary, the appearance of the selected fact. By dimensionally exploding the double-headed arrow that he used to link the states Ps and D in his model for thinking (Ps D), we can generate a space that is, at once, psychoanalytically imaginal and dynamically coadapting. Isomorphic to D. W. Winnicott's transitional space, it is self-organizing. It is describable according to dynamics formulated by W J. Freeman, S. Kauffman and C. Langton and it can generate instantaneous conscious contents by way of a selective process analogous to spatio-temporal binding. As a whole, this model supports a clinical stance advanced by D. W. Summary This note contains some remarks on the analysis of bifurcation phenomena, specifically strain localization (onset of a strain rate discontinuity), in small-deformation elastoplasticity. Nonassociative flow rules are allowed for to cover constitutive models frequently adopted for frictional (and softening) materials such as concrete. The conventional derivation of the localization criterion resting on an incrementally linear comparison material is critically reviewed and compared to the criterion resulting from actual nonlinear plastic flow laws.
Sommario Si svolgono alcune considerazioni sui fenomeni di biforcazione in solidi elastoplastici in regime di piccole deformazioni (di linearità geometrica) e precisamente sul manifestarsi di localizzazioni intese come discontinuità nel campo delle deformazioni incrementali. Si considerano leggi nonassociate. Vengono così inclusi nella trattazione modelli costitutivi frequentemente adottati per descrivere il comportamento di materiali ad attrito interno e soggetti a danneggiamento (nel senso di degrado di rigidezze elastiche in seguito a deformazioni anelastiche), oltre che soggetti a manifestazioni di instabilità per incrudimento negativo (softening). Si esamina criticamente il criterio, frequentemente adottato in letteratura, di localizzazione fondato su materiale di confronto incrementalmente lineare e si fornisce, corredato da osservazioni comparative, il criterio che risulta dall'assunzione del modello di materiale incrementale non lineare

In an analysis of a one-dimensional numerical model of a nonisothermal plasma it is shown that an ion-acoustic shock wave of subcritical amplitude separates a soliton from the shock front after the reversing stage. This process is accompanied by turbulent flow behind the front and by trapping of ions in potential wells. The numerical particle-in-a-box method is being used widely to study plasma phenomena. A number of authors have critically examined semiempirical mixing length theories [1]. A defect of these theories is connected with the fact that the magnitude of the mixing length, which is assumed to be small in constructing the theory, turns out in experiments to be comparable with the characteristic dimensions of the flow region. Thus, the concept of volume convection [2–4] or integral diffusion [5], which is understood to be a transfer mechanism in which the friction stress is not expressed in terms of the velocity gradient, is introduced along with the concept of gradient diffusion. In addition, there are a number of experimental papers [6] in which it is shown that the turbulent friction stress cannot be equal to zero at the place in the flow where the derivative of the velocity is equal to zero. Mixing length theory does not describe this effect.It is possible to generalize mixing length theory [7–9] in a way which eliminates these defects. The paper presents a theory of a device for the accurate determination of the density of fluids over a wide range of thermodynamic states. The instrument is based upon the measurement of the characteristics of the resonance of a circular section tube, or rod, performing steady, transverse oscillations in the fluid. The theory developed accounts for the fluid motion external to the rod as well as the mechanical motion of the rod and is valid over a defined range of conditions. Summary A method developed by the author for the systematic study of the thermodynamic and dynamic properties of the gas behind a shock wave is reported.The method is applicable to supersonic flow regimes for which the excitation, dissociation and ionization effects invalidate the usually adopted hypothesis of ideal gas.An Ideal Equivalent Gas, having the ratio of the specific heats s dependent on Mach number and altitude of flight is postulated.On the basis of the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations, valid through the shock wave, the relations defining the thermodynamic and dynamic state of the gas behind the shock wave are derived. These relations establish an extension of the classic relations valid for the ideal gas and reduce to them identically for s=.The dependence of the ratio of specific heats s of the Ideal Equivalent Gas on Mach number and altitude has been established, over a wide range, on the basis of the real gas solutions derived by Huber.
Sommario Nella presente nota viene esposto un metodo sviluppato dall'autore per lo studio sistematico dello stato termodinamico e dinamico del gas a valle di un'onda d'urto in regime supersonico, allorchè cioè gli effetti dell'eccitazione dei gradi di libertà vibrazionali delle molecole e della loro dissociazione e successiva ionizzazione invalidano l'ipotesi di gas ideale generalmente adottata.Viene definito un gas ideale equivalente avente rapporto dei calori specifici s funzione del numero di Mach e della quota di volo ed in base alle equazioni di conservazione della massa, della quantità di moto e dell'energia, valide attraverso all'onda d'urto, vengono derivate delle relazioni definenti lo stato termodinamico e dinamico del gas a valle dell'onda d'urto. Summary In this note the Author gives a general and unified treatment of first order phase equilibria for classical bodies like those considered by Truesdell and Toupin in[3].The Author reaches a system of partial differential equations (generalized Clapeyron equations) the conditions of whose solution are shown always to be satisfied.In particular, the Author derives the equations governing the polarized phase equilibrium for a fluid.Besides the equations ruling the phase equilibrium for a two phase n-component fluid mixture are given and the equivalence with the statical Gibbs-Duhem relation is shown.
Sommario In questa nota l'Autore presenta una trattazione generale ed unificata degli equilibri di fase del primo ordine per corpi classici come quelli definiti da Truesdell e Toupin in[3].L'Autore perviene ad un sistema di equazioni alle derivate parziali (equazioni di Clapeyron generalizzate) del quale si dimostra la integrabilità.In particolare, si deducono le equazioni che governano gli equilibri di fase polarizzati.Inoltre si ottengono le equazioni che regolano l'equilibrio di fase per una miscela fluida a n componenti; in questo caso si dimostra l'equivalenza delle equazioni con la relazione statica di Gibbs-Duhem.

This paper presents some test and analysis results for a spot welded joint subjected to tensile and alternate load. The effect of sheet rigidity on the tensile strength and fatigue life of the spot welded joint is studied by using the stress intensity factorsK I,K II,K III and an effective stress intensity factor Kmax calculated by the finite element method for crack around the nugget. The results show that the effective stress intensity factor Kmax is an essential parameter for estimating the fatigue life of the spot welded joint.  相似文献

Linear and nonlinear viscoelastic properties were examined for a 50 wt% suspension of spherical silica particles (with radius of 40 nm) in a viscous medium, 2.27/1 (wt/wt) ethylene glycol/glycerol mixture. The effective volume fraction of the particles evaluated from zero-shear viscosities of the suspension and medium was 0.53. At a quiescent state the particles had a liquid-like, isotropic spatial distribution in the medium. Dynamic moduli G* obtained for small oscillatory strain (in the linear viscoelastic regime) exhibited a relaxation process that reflected the equilibrium Brownian motion of those particles. In the stress relaxation experiments, the linear relaxation modulus G(t) was obtained for small step strain (0.2) while the nonlinear relaxation modulus G(t, ) characterizing strong stress damping behavior was obtained for large (>0.2). G(t, ) obeyed the time-strain separability at long time scales, and the damping function h() (–G(t, )/G(t)) was determined. Steady flow measurements revealed shear-thinning of the steady state viscosity () for small shear rates (< –1; = linear viscoelastic relaxation time) and shear-thickening for larger (>–1). Corresponding changes were observed also for the viscosity growth and decay functions on start up and cessation of flow, + (t, ) and (t, ). In the shear-thinning regime, the and dependence of +(t,) and (t,) as well as the dependence of () were well described by a BKZ-type constitutive equation using the G(t) and h() data. On the other hand, this equation completely failed in describing the behavior in the shear-thickening regime. These applicabilities of the BKZ equation were utilized to discuss the shearthinning and shear-thickening mechanisms in relation to shear effects on the structure (spatial distribution) and motion of the suspended particles.Dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dale S. Conclusion During unloading, local closure of the crack is followed by the emission of the first pair of reverse dislocations. The formation of an area of local contact during unloading occurs with a bang; the critical SIF of the external loads at this moment coincides with the value of the overall SIF of the field of the primary sessile dislocations. There is always a free gap between the crack tip and the area of local contact. An analysis is presented for the primary resonance of a clamped-hinged beam, which occurs when the frequency of excitation is near one of the natural frequencies,n . Three mode interaction (2 31 and 3 1 + 22) is considered and its influence on the response is studied. The case of two mode interaction (2 31) is also considered to compare it with the case of three mode interaction. The straight beam experiencing mid-plane stretching is governed by a nonlinear partial differential equation. By using Galerkin's method the governing equation is reduced to a system of nonautonomous ordinary differential equations. The method of multiple scales is applied to solve the system. Steady-state responses and their stability are examined. Results of numerical investigations show that there exists no significant difference between both modal interactions' influences on the responses.  相似文献

The propagation and reflection of one-dimensional plane unsteady waves and pulses in a mixture of a fluid with two-phase bubbles containing evaporating drops is investigated. A significant effect of unsteady evaporation of the drops in the zone ahead of the shock wave on the wave propagation is demonstrated. The evaporation of the drops results in a pressure increase ahead of the wave and the shock wave as it were climbs to increasing pressure level. In contrast to bubbly fluids with single-phase bubbles, in a fluid with two-phase bubbles, at a fixed phase volume fraction, a decrease in bubble size results in an increase rather than a decrease of the oscillation amplitude. The wave reflection from a solid wall is essentially nonlinear and the maximum pressure attained at the wall is several times greater than the incident-wave intensity.  相似文献
