Four new 2,1,3‐benzooxadiazole‐based donor–acceptor conjugated polymers, namely poly{9‐(9‐heptadecanyl)‐9H‐carbazole‐alt‐5,6‐bis(octyloxy)‐4,7‐di(selenophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]oxadiazole)}(PSBSC), poly{9‐(9‐heptadecanyl)‐9H‐carbazole‐alt‐5,6‐bis(octyloxy)‐4,7‐di(furan‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]oxadiazole)}(PFBFC), poly{9,9‐dioctyl‐9H‐fluorene‐alt‐5,6‐bis(octyloxy)‐4,7‐di(selenophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]oxadiazole)}(PSBSFL), and poly{9,9‐dioctyl‐9H‐fluorene‐alt‐5,6‐bis(octyloxy)‐4,7‐di(furan‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]oxadiazole)}(PFBFFL), were synthesized via Stille polycondensation reaction. All polymers were found to be soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, and chlorobenzene. Their structures were verified by 1H‐NMR and the molecular weights were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The polymer films exhibited broad absorption bands. Among all polymers, photovoltaic cells based on the device structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PSBSC:PC71BM(1:3, w/w)/LiF/Al revealed an open‐circuit voltage of 0.62 V, a short circuit current of 7.63 mA cm?2 and a power conversion efficiency of 1.89%. This work demonstrates a good example for tuning absorption range, energy level, and photovoltaic properties of the polymers with different spacers and donor units can offer a simple and effective method to improve the efficiency of PSCs. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New donor–acceptor (D‐A) polymers, poly(4,5‐bis(2‐octyldodecyloxy)naphto[2,1‐b:3,4‐b']dithiophenebenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole) (PNDT‐B) and poly(4,5‐bis(2‐octyldodecyloxy)naphto [2,1‐b:3,4‐b′]dithiophene‐4,7‐di(thiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole) (PNDT‐TBT), with the extended π‐electron delocalization of naphtho[2,1‐b:3,4‐b']dithiophene, were successfully synthesized by Suzuki and Stille coupling reactions. The structure and physical properties of polymers were characterized by DFT calculation, UV–vis absorption, cyclovoltammetry, TGA and DSC analyses. X‐ray diffraction studies indicated a relatively highly ordered intermolecular structure in PNDT‐TBT after annealing. This high degree of molecular order resulted from the crystallinity and increasing planarity, provided by the thiophene linker groups and the interdigitation of the long alkoxy side chains. The new D‐A polymer, PNDT‐TBT, exhibited a p‐type carrier mobility of 0.028 cm2/Vs and an on/off ratio of 5.9 × 103. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The preparation of triarylamine N‐functionalized 3,6‐linked carbazole homopolymers as well as alternating copolymers with 2,5‐diphenyl‐[1,3,4]oxadiazole and benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole was undertaken using Suzuki cross‐coupling polymerization procedures associating 3,6‐bis(4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐[1,3,2]dioxaborolan‐2‐yl)‐9‐(bis[4‐(2‐butyl‐octyloxy)‐phenyl]‐amino‐phen‐4‐yl)‐carbazole and, respectively, 3,6‐dibromo‐9‐(bis[4‐(2‐butyl‐octyloxy)‐phenyl]‐amino‐phen‐4‐yl)‐carbazole, 2,5‐bis(4‐bromo‐phenyl)‐[1, 3,4]oxadiazole, and 4,7‐dibromo‐benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole. Both the carbazole homopolymer and alternating copolymer with 2,5‐diphenyl‐[1,3,4]oxadiazole were found as wideband gap materials emitting in the blue part of the electromagnetic spectrum while the carbazole alternating copolymer with 4,7‐benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole had a narrower band gap and emitted in the orange part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The new polymers are thermally stable up to 300 °C. A discussion of the electrochemical and optical properties of the new polymers is presented. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two novel thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole containing donor–acceptor type alternating copolymers, poly[2‐(5‐(2‐decyl‐2H‐benzo[d][1,2,3]triazol‐4‐yl)thiophen‐2‐yl)‐5‐(thiophen‐2‐yl)thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole] (BTzTh) and poly[2‐(5‐(2‐decyl‐2H‐benzo[d][1,2,3]triazol‐4‐yl)furan‐2‐yl)‐5‐(furan‐2‐yl)thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole] (BTzFr) were synthesized by Stille coupling polymerization and their electrochemical and electrochromic properties were explored. Electrochemical activities of the spray‐casted polymer films were determined by cyclic voltammetry. To evaluate the effect of thiophene and furan moieties on the optical properties of the copolymers, spectroelectrochemistry studies were performed. To examine the switching abilities, copolymer films were subjected to a double potential step chronoamperometry in their local maximum absorptions. Both thiazolothiazole‐containing copolymers showed multichromic properties with low band‐gap values 1.7 and 1.9 eV for BTzTh and BTzFr, respectively. The decent electrochromical properties together with solution processability make them important candidates for electrochromic applications. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. An original strategy to construct a new donor–acceptor (D–A)‐integrated structure by directly imposing “pull” unit on the “push” moiety to form fused ring architecture has been developed, and poly{N‐alkyl‐carbazole[3,4‐c:5,6‐c]bis[1,2,5]thiadiazole‐alt‐thiophene} (PCBTT) with D–A‐integrated structure, in which two 1,2,5‐thiadiazole rings are fixed on carbazole in 3‐, 4‐ and 5‐, 6‐position symmetrically and thiophene is used as bridge, has been synthesized. The interaction between pull and push units has fine tuned the HOMO/LUMO energy levels, and the resulting copolymer covers the solar flux from 300 to 750 nm. The interaction between pull and push units is worth noting that due to the fused five rings inducing strong intermolecular interaction, an extremely short π–π stacking distance of 0.32 nm has been achieved for PCBTT both in powder and solid states. This is the shortest π–π stacking distance reported for conjugated polymers. Additionally, an obvious intramolecular charge transfer and energy transfer from donor units to acceptor units have been detected in this D–A integration. A moderate‐to‐high open‐circuit voltage of ~0.7 V in PCBTT:[6,6]‐phenyl‐C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) (w/w = 1/2) solar cells is achieved due to the low‐lying HOMO energy level of PCBTT. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. With the D‐A integrated structure concept, a new donor–acceptor (D‐A) copolymer poly{(N‐dodecyl‐carbazole[3,4‐c:5,6‐c]bis[1,2,5]thiadiazole‐alt‐4,8‐di(2‐ethylhexy‐loxyl)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene)} has been designed and synthesized using a novel architecture N‐dodecyl‐carbazole[3,4‐c:5,6‐c]bis[1,2,5]thiadiazole, and di(2‐ethylhexy‐loxyl)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene) as the basic building blocks. The copolymer has a low‐lying highest occupied molecular orbital energy level of ?5.41 eV and a broaden absorption matching well with the main solar photon flux. Note that an H‐aggregation beneficial for charge transportation and collection is formed in the macromolecules film, which implies that the planar D‐A integrated structure favors the strong intermolecular interaction to render molecules aggregated via face‐to‐face self‐assembly. The aggregation becomes larger scale after thermal annealing. Additionally, obvious intramolecular charge transfer and energy transfer have occurred in created D‐A integration. Without any treatment, the resulting polymer achieved a efficiency of 2.0% and relatively high open‐circuit voltage (Voc) value of 0.77 V when blended with [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester in a typical bulk heterojunction. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of three new low bandgap donor–acceptor–donor–acceptor/ (D–A–D–A/) polymers have been successfully synthesized based on the combination of isoindigo as the electron‐deficient acceptor and 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene as the electron‐rich donor, followed by CH‐arylation with different acceptors (4,7‐dibromo[c][1,2,5]‐(oxa, thia, and/or selena)diazole ( 4a‐c )). These polymers were used as donor materials for photovoltaic applications. All of the polymers are highly stable and show good solubility in chlorinated solvents. The highest power conversion efficiency of 1.6% was achieved in the bulk heterojunction photovoltaic device that consisted of poly ((E)?6‐(7‐(benzo‐[c][1,2,5]‐thiadiazol‐4‐yl)?2,3‐dihydrothieno‐[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxin‐5‐yl)?6′‐(2,3‐dihydrothieno‐[3,4‐b][1,4]‐dioxin‐5‐yl)?1,1′‐bis‐(2‐octyldodecyl)‐[3,3′‐biindolinylidene]‐2,2′‐dione) as the donor and PC61BM as the acceptor, with a short‐circuit current density (Jsc) of 8.10 mA/cm2, an open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.56 V and a fill factor of 35%, which indicates that these polymers are promising donors for polymer solar cell applications. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New electroluminescent polymers (poly(9,9′‐dioctylfluorene‐co‐thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene‐co‐benzo[2,3,5]thiadiazole) ( P1) and poly(9,9′‐dioctylfluorene‐co‐thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene‐co‐benzo[2,3,5]thiadiazole‐co‐[4‐(2‐ethylhexyloxyl)phenyl]diphenylamine ( P2) ) possess hole‐transporting or electron‐transporting units or both in the main chains. Electron‐deficient benzothiadiazole and electron‐rich triphenylamine moieties were incorporated into the polymer backbone to improve the electron‐transporting and hole‐transporting characteristics, respectively. P1 and P2 show greater solubility than poly(9,9′‐dioctylfluorene‐co‐thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene ( PFTT ), without sacrificing their good thermal stability. Moreover, owing to the incorporation of the electron‐deficient benzothiadiazole unit, P1 and P2 exhibit remarkably lower LUMO levels than PFTT , and thus, it should facilitate the electron injection into the polymer layer from the cathode electrode. Consequently, because of the balance of charge mobility, LED devices based on P1 and P2 exhibit greater brightness and efficiency (up to 3000 cd/m2 and 1.35 cd/A) than devices that use the pristine PFTT . © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four new D—A type copolymers with 2D‐conjugated side‐chain identified PfToBT, PbToBT, PfTDPP and PbTDPP, containing two acceptors 4,7‐dithien‐2‐yl‐benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (DTBT), and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) linked by thiophene donors, are obtained using Pd‐catalyzed Stille‐coupling reaction. These polymers show a broad visible‐near‐infrared absorption band (Eg = 1.79–1.66 eV) and possess a relatively low‐lying HOMO level at ?5.34 to ?5.12 eV. All the polymer:PC70BM blend films showed edge‐on structure and have similar dπ‐spacing values. According to the structure of conjugated side‐chain, the vertical distributions of polymer chains and PC70BM within the BHJ (bulk heterojunction) were different. When DPP used as an acceptor, conjugated side chains of the polymer coexisted with PC70BM in same position. The BHJ film prepared from PfToBT, PbToBT had a discontinuous network between polymer and PC70BM, whereas films from PfTDPP and PbTDPP formed continuous and evenly distributed network between them. This optimized vertical morphology promotes hole transport along respective pathways of polymers and fullerenes in the vertical direction, leading to high JSC. PbTDPP shows PCE up to 2.9% (Jsc of 9.4 mA/cm2, Voc of 0.68 V, and FF of 0.44). © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2016 , 54, 2746–2759  相似文献

Electrochromic polymers based on [1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4‐g]quinoxaline acceptor and thiophene, 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene and 3,3‐didecyl‐3,4‐proylenedioxythiophene donors, namely poly(6,7‐diphenyl‐4,9‐di(thiophen‐2‐yl)‐[1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4‐g]quinoxaline) ( P1 ), poly(4‐(2,3‐dihydrothieno[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxin‐5‐yl)‐9‐(2,3‐dihydrothieno[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxin‐7‐yl)‐6,7‐diphenyl‐[1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4‐g]quinoxaline) ( P2 ), and poly(4‐(3,3‐didecyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐thieno[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxepin‐6‐yl)‐9‐(3,3‐didecyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐thieno[3,4‐b][1,4]dioxepin‐8‐yl)‐6,7‐diphenyl‐[1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4‐g]quinoxaline) ( P3 ), respectively, were electrochemically and/or chemically synthesized and characterized. Electrochemical and optical properties of the polymers were then investigated. The results, which were obtained electrochemically and optically, indicate that the polymers bearing the same acceptor and different donor units have a band gap range of 0.59–1.24 eV depending on the strength and size of the donor units and band gap determination method. A significant finding in this study was the phenomenon that when the acceptor is physically huge, the general rule that a weak donor would have a high band gap whereas a strong donor would have low band gap can be broken due to the torsional angles/steric hindrances involved with physically large donor molecules. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Low‐band‐gap π‐conjugated polymers composed of π‐excessive thiophene and π‐deficient benzothiadiazole and quinoxaline units were prepared in high yields by a polycondensation method using palladium cross‐coupling reactions of alkylthiophene diacetylenes, 4,7‐dibromo‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole, and 5,8‐dibromo‐2,3‐dipyridine‐2‐ylquinoxaline. The copolymers were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, gel permeation chromatography, and elemental analysis. High‐molecular‐weight (weight‐average molecular weight up to 82,600 g/mol), thermostable, soluble, and film‐forming materials were obtained. The polymers were photoluminescent in chloroform and showed metallic luster in the solid state. The absorption and emission in solution and in the solid state of the polymers revealed that the polymers generated a π‐stacked structure in the solid state, and the polymer molecules in the film were ordered. Thin films of poly[3‐dodecylthiophen‐2,5‐diylethynylene‐(benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole‐4,7‐diyl)ethynylene] ( P‐1 ), poly[3,4‐di dodecylthiophen‐2,5‐diylethynylene‐(benzo[1,2,5]thiadiazole‐4,7‐diyl)ethynylene] ( P‐2 ), poly[3‐dodecylthiophene‐2,5‐diylethynylene‐(2,3‐dipyridine‐2‐ylquinoxaline‐5,8‐diyl)ethynylene] ( P‐3 ), and poly[3,4‐didodecylthiophene‐2,5‐diylethynylene‐(2,3‐dipyridine‐2‐ylquinoxaline‐5,8‐diyl)‐ethynylene] ( P‐4 ) exhibited an optical band gap of ~1.85–2.08 eV. The highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels of the polymers were determined from electrochemical measurements. In the absorption and emission spectra of these polymers in chloroform/methanol mixtures, all the polymers revealed solvatochromic effects, which were related to the formation of aggregates, as confirmed by temperature‐dependence absorption investigations. The absorption spectra of P‐2 and P‐4 at different temperatures also revealed significant effects of the structure on the molecular interactions. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The cross‐shaped p–n diblock oligomers based on oligothiophenes (OTs) and 1,3,4‐oxadiazole (OXD) were synthesized and investigated regarding optical properties, electrochemistry, quantum chemical calculations, and intramolecular energy transfer. Since only one emission peak is observed in PL spectra of the oligomers, it is evidenced that effective energy transfer from the OXD to OTs branch. The electrochemical experiments show that almost complete spatial separation of HOMO and LUMO with the thiophene number increasing. The theoretical calculations were carried out regarding which conformer is the lowest in energy, the torsion angle between thiophene/oxadiazole and the central benzene ring, and electron densities distributions of the oligomers. Based on all data, a model for intramolecular energy‐transfer process has been put forward to explain the optical properties. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two novel acceptors of benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole and quinoxaline with conjugated dithienylbenzothiadiazole pendants were first designed and synthesized for building efficient photovoltaic copolymers. Based on benzo[1,2‐b;3,4‐b′]dithiophene donors and the two acceptors, two new copolymers have been prepared by Stille coupling polymerization. The resulting copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and thermogravimetric analysis. UV–Visible absorption and cyclic voltammetry measurements indicated that the two copolymers possessed strong and broad absorption in the range of 300–700 nm, and deep‐lying energy levels of highest occupied molecular orbitals. The polymer photovoltaic devices based on benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole‐based copolymer/phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 2.42%, attributed to its relatively better light‐harvesting ability and active film morphology. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new heteroarylene‐vinylene donor–acceptor polymer P(BDT‐V‐BTD) with reduced bandgap has been synthesized and its photophysical, electronic and photovoltaic properties investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The structure of the polymer comprises an unprecedented combination of a strong donor (4,8‐dialkoxy‐benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b']dithiophene, BDT), a strong acceptor (2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole, BTD) and a vinylene spacer. The new polymer was obtained by a metal‐catalyzed cross‐coupling Stille reaction and fully characterized by NMR, UV–vis absorption, GPC, TGA, DSC and electrochemistry. Detailed ab initio computations with solvation effects have been performed for the monomer and model oligomers. The electrochemical investigation has ascertained the ambipolar character of the polymer and energetic values of HOMO, LUMO and bandgap matching materials‐design rules for optimized organic photovoltaic devices. The HOMO and LUMO energies are consistently lower than those of previous heteroarylene‐vinylene polymer while the introduction of the vinylene spacer afforded lower bandgaps compared to the analogous system P(BDT‐BTD) with no spacer between the aromatic rings. These superior properties should allow for enhanced photovoltages and photocurrents in photovoltaic devices in combination with PCBM. Preliminary photovoltaic investigation afforded relatively modest power conversion efficiencies of 0.74% (AM 1.5G, 100 mW/cm2), albeit higher than that of previous heteroarylene‐vinylene polymers and comparable to that of P(BDT‐BTD). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of soluble conjugated copolymers derived from 9,9‐dioctylfluorene (FO) and selenophene (SeH) was synthesized by a palladium‐catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction with various feed ratios of SeH to FO less than or equal to 50%. The efficient energy transfer from fluorene segments to narrow band‐gap selenophene sites was observed. In comparison with the very well studied copolymer poly(fluorene‐co‐thiophene), poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐co‐selenophene) (PFO‐SeH) shows redshifted photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) emission. PL spectra of the PFO‐SeH copolymers show a significant redshift along with increasing selenophene content in the copolymers and also with increasing polymer concentration in solution. PL quantum efficiency of the selenophene‐containing PFO copolymer is much lower than that of corresponding PFO‐thiophene (Th) copolymers. All these features of PFO‐SeH copolymers can be explained by the difference in aromaticity of selenophene and thiophene heterocycles and the heavy atom effect of Se in comparison with S‐atoms. The device fabricated with PFO‐SeH15 as the emissive layer exhibited high external quantum efficiency (0.51%) at a luminance of 1570 cd/m2. Device performance is limited by electron injection and the strong quenching effect of Se atoms. Devices with PFO‐SeH copolymers blended into PFO homopolymers show significant improvement in device performance. External quantum efficiency as high as 1.7% can be obtained for PFO‐SeH30/PFO blend devices. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 823–836, 2005  相似文献

By employing planar thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene (TT) as end‐capped units and famous 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) or its all‐sulfur analog 3,4‐ethylenedithiathiophene (EDTT) as cores, two conjugated oligomer, TT‐EDOT‐TT and TT‐EDTT‐TT, have been synthesized and electropolymerized into electrochromic polymer films, P(TT‐EDOT‐TT) and P(TT‐EDTT‐TT), respectively. Due to strongly noncovalent inter/intramolecular interactions from S? S attraction of TT‐EDTT‐TT, it has twisted molecular configuration in contrast to planar TT‐EDOT‐TT. Spectroscopic, electrochemical, morphological as well as theoretical calculation studies of these oligomers or polymers were carried out to reveal the significant influence of such molecular geometry on their physicochemical and optoelectronic properties. According to electrochromic kinetics, P(TT‐EDTT‐TT) presented preferable electrochromic behavior such as the higher optical contrast (70.8%), favorable coloration efficiency (331.3 cm2 C?1) and fast response time (0.72 s). This research will help us deeply understand the effect of spatial organization of precursor molecules on the properties of electrochromic polymers and provides a promising strategy to develop high‐performance electrochromic materials. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two conjugated main‐chain polymers consisting of heteroarene‐fused π‐conjuagted donor moiety alternating with 4,7‐bis(5‐bromo‐4‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (P1) or 2,5‐bis(5‐bromo‐4‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl) thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole (P2) units have been synthesized. They are intrinsically amorphous in nature and do not exhibit crystalline melting temperatures during thermal analysis. The effect of the fused rings on the thermal, optical, electrochemical, charge transport, and photovoltaic properties of these polymers has been investigated. The polymer (P1) containing 4,7‐bis(5‐bromo‐4‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5] thiadiazole has a broad absorption extending from 300 to 600 nm with optical bandgaps as low as 2.02 eV. The HOMO levels (5.42 to 5.29 eV) are more sensitive to the choice of acceptor. The polymers were employed to fabricate organic photovoltaic cells with methanofullerene [6,6]‐phenyl C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM). As a result, the polymer solar cell device containing P1 had the best preliminary results with an open‐circuit voltage of 0.61 V, a short‐circuit current density of 6.19 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.32, offering an overall power conversion efficiency of 1.21%. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A prototypical semiconducting bicomponent system consisting of a conjugated polymer, that is, poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT), blended with a small thiophene containing conjugated molecule, that is, an alkyl‐substituted bisphenyl‐bithiophene [phenylene–thiophene–thiophene–phenylene (PTTP)], has been used as an electroactive active layer in field‐effect transistors (FETs). The self‐assembly of this bicomponent system at surfaces has been studied at different length scales, from the nanoscale to the macroscale, and compared with the behavior of monocomponent films of PTTP and P3HT. The correlation between morphology and electric properties of the semiconducting material is explored by fabricating prototypes of FETs varying the relative concentrations of the two‐component blend. The maximum charge carrier mobility value, achieved with a few percent of PTTP component, is not simply due to a uniform dispersion of the molecules in the polymer matrix, but rather to the generation of very long percolation paths, whose composition and electrical properties can be tuned with the PTTP concentration. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of one donor–two acceptor (D–A1)‐(D–A2) random terpolymers containing a 2,7‐carbazole donor and varying compositions of perylene diimide (PDI) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) acceptors was synthesized via Suzuki coupling polymerization. The optical properties of the terpolymers are weighted sums of the constituent parent copolymers and all show strong absorption over the 400 to 700 nm range with optical bandgaps ranging from 1.77 to 1.87 eV, depending on acceptor composition. The copolymers were tested as acceptor materials in bulk heterojunction all‐polymer solar cells using poly[(4,8‐bis‐(2‐ethylhexyloxy)‐benzo[1,2‐b;4,5‐b′]dithiophene)‐2,6‐diyl‐alt‐(4‐(2‐ethylhexanoyl)‐thieno[3,4‐b]thiophene)‐2,6‐diyl] (PBDTTT‐C) as the donor material. In contrast to the optoelectronic properties, the measured device parameters are not composition dependent, and rather depend solely on the presence of the NDI unit, where the devices containing any amount of NDI perform half as well as those using the parent polymer containing only carbazole and PDI. Overall this is the first example of a one donor–two acceptor random terpolymer system containing perylene diimide (PDI) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) acceptor units, and demonstrates a facile method of tuning polymer optoelectronic properties while minimizing the need for complicated synthetic and purification steps. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
