Macromolecular design by interchange of xanthates/reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (MADIX/RAFT) of diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) using the hydrophobic O‐ethyl‐S‐(1‐methoxycarbonyl) ethyl dithiocarbonate MADIX/RAFT mediating agent, Rhodixan A1, was investigated. Attempts to obtain an efficient control of DADMAC polymerization in a water/ethanol mixture failed because of significant chain transfer to ethanol. The use of a water‐soluble Rhodixan A1‐terminated acrylamide oligomer as the MADIX/RAFT agent enabled the controlled polymerization of DADMAC in water at 50 °C using the cationic azo initiator V‐50. An excellent agreement was found between experimental and theoretical Mn values throughout polymerization and over a broad range of initial concentration of xanthate. Polydispersity indexes (PDIs) at the end of the polymerization were abnormally high for a process showing a linear increase of Mn with monomer conversion (1.8 < PDI < 2.0). This feature was explained by the measurement of a high transfer constant to xanthate (Cx = 18.8 ± 1.6) but a low interchange transfer constant (Cex = 1.5). Nevertheless, poly(acrylamide)–poly(DADMAC) double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) of controlled Mn and composition could be successfully synthesized for the first time. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of N‐vinylcarbazole (NVK) mediated by macromolecular xanthates was used to prepare three types of block copolymers containing poly(N‐vinylcarbazole) (PVK). Using a poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether based xanthate ( PEG‐X ), the RAFT polymerization of NVK proceeded in a controlled way to afford a series of PEG‐b‐PVK with different PVK chain lengths. Successive RAFT polymerization of NVK and vinyl acetate (VAc) with a small molecule xanthate ( X1 ) as the chain transfer agent was tested to prepare PVK‐b‐PVAc. Though both monomers can be homopolymerized in a controlled manner with this xanthate, only by polymerizing NVK first could give well‐defined block copolymers. The xanthate groups in the end of PVK could be removed by radical‐induced reduction using tributylstannane, and PVK‐b‐PVA was obtained by further hydrolysis of PVK‐b‐PVAc under basic conditions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Aqueous radical polymerizations of acrylamide were conducted in the presence of varying concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and two xanthate reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents: the small, hydrophobic Rhodixan A1 and the oligomeric, amphiphilic PAm7‐XA1. The presence of SDS led to significant retardation of the polymerization, while the apparent activity of both RAFT/MADIX agents decreased as the SDS concentration increased. PAm7‐XA1 was affected to a lesser degree than Rhodixan A1, probably due to its lesser tendency to become sequestered in SDS micelles. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. An organic–inorganic copolymer with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and xanthate moieties in the main chain was synthesized via the polycondensation between 3,13‐di(2‐bromopropionate)propyl double‐decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) and 1,4‐di(xanthate potassium)butane. This hybrid copolymer was used as the macromolecular chain transfer agent to obtain the organic–inorganic poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) (PVPy) copolymers via a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer/macromolecular design via the interchange of xanthates (RAFT/MADIX) polymerization approach; the polymerization behavior of N‐vinyl pyrrolidone was investigated by means of gel permeation chromatography. It was found that the polymerization was in a living and controlled manner. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the organic–inorganic PVPy copolymers with DDSQ in the main chains were microphase‐separated in bulks. Compared to plain PVPy, the organic–inorganic PVPy copolymers displayed the decreased glass transition temperatures (Tgs); the decreased Tgs are attributable to the effect of the introduced DDSQ cages on the packing of PVPy chains as evidenced by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In water, the organic–inorganic PVPy copolymers can self‐assemble into the spherical nano‐objects with the size of 20–50 nm in diameter. In the self‐assembled nano‐objects, the aggregates of the hydrophobic DDSQ constituted the cores of the polymeric micelles whereas the PVPy chains between the DDSQ behaved as the coronas of the polymeric micelles. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A photoinitiation process was investigated to develop a rapid and well‐controlled RAFT polymerization method applied to vinyl acetate (VAc) using methyl (ethoxycarbonothioyl)sulfanyl acetate (MESA) and bis(2,4,6‐trimethylbenzoyl)phenylphosphine oxide as the RAFT agent and photoinitiator, respectively. MESA was selected as the photochemically inert RAFT agent to minimize photolysis of the thiocarbonylthio groups during polymerization. Poly(vinyl acetate) with a prespecified well‐controlled molecular weight (MW) and a narrow MW distribution was successfully synthesized. The polymerization reaction proceeded as a living polymerization and was remarkably rapid compared with approaches that use thermally initiated processes with a very short induction period. A detailed kinetic study of the mechanism underlying the polymerization reaction, however, revealed that the chain ends containing xanthate moieties were not perfectly stable upon UV‐irradiation, and they generated radicals via homolytic cleavage. This reaction appeared to proceed by a combination of a degenerative transfer RAFT mechanism and a dissociation‐combination mechanism. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel xanthate RAFT agents, RAFT1‐5, designed for the preparation of a range of novel N‐vinyl pyrrolidone‐based polymeric materials with linear and star architectures via RAFT polymerization are reported. Ethyl pyrrolidone moiety was included in the structures of the xanthates as a part of R (RAFT1‐3) or Z group (RAFT4) to evaluate their effect on the polymerization and to impart homogeneity in the resulting products. The xanthates were designed to fragment to give primary (RAFT1), secondary (RAFT2 and 4), and tertiary radicals (RAFT 3) allowing evaluation of their effect on polymerization. RAFT5 was designed to produce polymeric materials with four‐arm architectures. RAFT1 showed comparable characteristics as conventional radical polymerization. RAFT2 and RAFT4 exhibited living/controlled polymerizations, owing to the combination of stable secondary radical species and incorporation of ethyl pyrrolidone moiety as the R and Z group, respectively. RAFT2 and RAFT5 gave first examples of random copolymers of NVP and VAc with linear and four‐arm star architectures, all exhibiting monomodal distributions and narrow dispersity. The four‐arm PVAc star was used as a macroCTA to synthesize amphiphilic four‐arm star PVAc‐block‐PNVP. The TEM investigation showed the formation of spherical micelles with an average diameter of about 60 nm. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. In this contribution, we reported a facile synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PMMA‐b‐PVPy) diblock copolymers via sequential radical polymerizations mediated by isopropylxanthic disulfide (DIP). It was found that the radical polymerization of N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) mediated by DIP was in a controlled and living manner. In contrast, the polymerization of methyl methacrylate mediated by DIP displayed the behavior of telomerization, affording xanthate‐terminated PMMA with a good control of molecular weights while the conversion of monomer was not very high. The xanthate‐terminated PMMA can be successfully used as the macromolecular chain transfer agent for the polymerization of NVP via RAFT/MADIX process and thus PMMA‐b‐PVPy diblock copolymers can be successfully synthesized via sequential radical polymerization mediated by isopropylxanthic disulfide. One of these diblock copolymers was incorporated into polybenzoxazine and the nanostructured thermosets were obtained as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy, small angle X‐ray scattering, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The formation of nanostructures in polybenzoxazine thermosets was ascribed to a reaction‐induced microphase separation mechanism. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A cyclic selenium‐based reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent, 5,5‐dimethyl‐3‐phenyl‐2‐selenoxo‐1,3‐selenazolidin‐4‐one (RAFT‐Se), was synthesized and utilized in the RAFT polymerizations of vinyl acetate (VAc). Its analog, 5,5‐dimethyl‐3‐phenyl‐2‐thioxothiazolidin‐4‐one (RAFT‐S), was also used in RAFT polymerizations for comparison under identical conditions. The RAFT polymerizations of VAc with RAFT‐Se were moderately controlled evidenced by the increase of molecular weights with conversion, despite the slightly high Mw/Mn (less than 1.90), whereas the molecular weights were poorly controlled in the presence of RAFT‐S (2.00 < Mw/Mn < 2.30). Thanks to its unusual cyclic structure of RAFT‐Se, one or more RAFT‐Se species was incorporated into the resultant poly(VAc) as revealed by the results of cleavage of polymer and atomic absorption spectroscopy. Considering the biorelated functions of both poly(VAc) and Se element, this work undoubtedly provided a successful methodology of how to incorporate high content of Se into a molecular weight controlled poly(VAc). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, high molecular weight polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) (Mn,GPC = 123,000 g/mol, Mw/Mn = 1.28) was synthesized by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) under high pressure (5 kbar), using benzoyl peroxide and N,N‐dimethylaniline as initiator mediated by (S)‐2‐(ethyl propionate)‐(O‐ethyl xanthate) (X1) at 35 °C. Polymerization kinetic study with RAFT agent showed pseudo‐first order kinetics. Additionally, the polymerization rate of VAc under high pressure increased greatly than that under atmospheric pressure. The “living” feature of the resultant PVAc was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and chain extension experiments. Well‐defined PVAc with high molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution can be obtained relatively fast by using RAFT polymerization at 5 kbar. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of VAc in the presence of ECTVA, which capable of both reversible chain transferable through a xanthate moiety and propagation via a vinyl group, led to highly branched copolymers by a method analogous to self-condensing vinyl polymerization (SCVP). The ECTVA acted as a vinyl acetate AB inimer. It was copolymerized with vinyl acetate (VAc) in ratios selected to tune the distribution and length of branches of resulting hyperbranched poly(vinyl acetate). The degree of branching increased with chain ECTVA concentration, as confirmed by NMR spectroscopy. The polymer structure was characterized via MALDI–TOF. Retention of the xanthate compound during the polymerization was evidenced by successful chain extension of a branched (PVAc) macroCTA by RAFT polymerization. The branched PVAc led to better dissolution as compared to linear PVAc, an effect attributed primarily to an increased contribution of end groups.  相似文献

Stable monodisperse poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) submicronic latex particles were synthesized by ab initio batch emulsion polymerization using a dextran derivative from renewable resource as an efficient steric stabilizer. The dextranend‐functionalized by a xanthate moiety was synthesized by Huisgen's 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition (click chemistry). It was applied as a macromolecular RAFT (reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer) agent in surfactant‐free emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate to form in situ an amphiphilic block copolymer able to efficiently stabilize the latex particles. The method afforded the preparation of high solids content (27%) latices coated by dextran. Both the kinetic study and the molar mass analyses confirmed the involvement of the dithiocarbonate group in the emulsion polymerization process. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Core(polyvinyl neodecanoate‐ethylene glycol dimethacrylate)‐shell(polyvinyl alcohol) (core (P(VND‐EGDMA))‐shell(PVA)) microspheres were developed by seeded polymerization with the use of conventional free radical and RAFT/MADIX mediated polymerization. Poly(vinyl pivalate) PVPi was grafted onto microspheres prepared via suspension polymerization of vinylneodecanoate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. The amount of grafted polymer was found to be independent from the technique used with conventional free radical polymerization and MADIX polymerization resulting into similar shell thicknesses. Both systems—grafting via free radical polymerization or the MADIX process—were found to follow slightly different kinetics. While the free radical polymerization resulted in a weight gain linear with the monomer consumption in solution the growth in the MADIX controlled system experienced a delay. The core‐shell microspheres were obtained by hydrolysis of the poly(vinyl pivalate) surface grafted brushes to form poly(vinyl alcohol). During hydrolysis the microspheres lost a significant amount of weight, consistent with the hydrolysis of 40–70% of all VPi units. Drug loading was found to be independent of the shell layer thickness, suggesting that the drug loading is governed by the amount of bulk material. The shell layer does not appear to represent an obstacle to the drug ingress. Cell testing using colorectal cancer cell lines HT 29 confirm the biocompatibility of the empty microspheres whereas the clofazimine loaded particles lead to 50% cell death, confirming the release of the drug. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The monomer N‐vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) undergoes side reactions in the presence of R group functional xanthates and impurities. The fate of the monomer NVP and a selection of six O‐ethyl xanthates during xanthate‐mediated polymerization were studied via NMR spectroscopy. A high number of by‐products were identified. Significant side reactions affecting NVP include the formation of an unsaturated dimer and hydration products in bulk or in solution in C6D6. In addition, the xanthate adjacent to a NVP unit was found to undergo elimination at moderate temperature (60–70 °C), resulting in unsaturated species and the formation of new xanthate species. The presence of the chlorinated compound α‐chlorophenyl acetic acid, ethyl ester, a precursor in the synthesis of the xanthate S‐(2‐ethyl phenylacetate) O‐ethyl xanthate, resulted in a dramatic increase in the rate of side reactions such as unsaturated dimer formation and a high ratio of unsaturated chain ends. The conditions for the occurrence of such side reactions are discussed in this article, with relevance to increasing the control over the polymerization kinetics, endgroup functionality, and control over the molar mass distribution. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of poly(tert‐butyl acrylate‐block‐vinyl acetate) copolymers using a combination of two living radical polymerization techniques, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, is reported. The use of two methods is due to the disparity in reactivity of the two monomers, viz. vinyl acetate is difficult to polymerize via ATRP, and a suitable RAFT agent that can control the polymerization of vinyl acetate is typically unable to control the polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate. Thus, ATRP was performed to make poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) containing a bromine end group. This end group was subsequently substituted with a xanthate moiety. Various spectroscopic methods were used to confirm the substitution. The poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) macro‐RAFT agent was then used to produce (tert‐butyl acrylate‐block‐vinyl acetate). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, Macro-Reversible addition fragmentation termination (RAFT) agents based on poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) possessing different molecular weights and bearing benzoyl xanthate moieties were synthesized by the reaction of PEG potassium xanthate salts with benzoyl chloride, 4-methyl benzoyl chloride and 4-chloro benzoyl chloride. Controlled free radical polymerization of the styrene were carried out in the presence of these macro-RAFT agents using 2,2′-azobisizsobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator to yield PS-b-PEG-b-PS block copolymers. The linear kinetic plot ln [M]o/[M] vs. polymerization time indicated that was first order with reference to monomer concentration. The block copolymerization possessed controlled/living character. The controlled character of the RAFT polymerization of the styrene was confirmed by the formation of narrow polydispersity of the polymers, linear increases in the molecular weight with polymerization time and molecular weight of the products that agreed well with theoretical values. Polymers having relatively narrow molecular weight distributions and predetermined number average molecular weights were obtained by the RAFT polymerization of the styrene. However, molecular weights of the polymers deviated from the theoretical values when low molecular weight RAFT agents are used. The results indicate that PEG benzoyl xanthate RAFT agents can more efficiently control the polymerization comparing methyl or chlorobenzoyl derivatives. The block copolymers were characterized by spectroscopic and GPC methods.  相似文献

Controlled radical polymerization of N‐vinylcaprolactam (NVCL) via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization or macromolecular design via the interchange of xanthate (MADIX) was described, employing 2‐diphenylthiocarbamoylsulfanyl‐2‐methyl‐propionic acid (CTA1), ((O‐ethylxanthyl)methyl)benzene (CTA2) and (1‐(O‐ethylxanthyl)ethyl)benzene (CTA3) as chain transfer agents (CTA). It was found that all the CTAs led to controlled radical polymerization of NVCL, with the molecular weight increased along with the conversion of monomer and a relatively narrow molecular weight distribution could be obtained, as determined with matrix‐assisted laser desorption and ionization time‐of‐flight (MALDI‐TOF) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), the polydispersity indices, as determined by MALDI‐TOF, were typically on the order of 1.24, but the polymerization did not proceed in a strictly living manner. The chain transfer ability of these CTAs was in the following order: CTA1 ≈ CTA2 < CTA3. MALTI‐TOF measurement showed that the major population of polymer retained the chain‐end functional group, but minor population deactivated by radical coupling. In preparation of the block copolymer of NVCL and vinyl acetate (VAc) by sequential polymerization, the sequence of monomer addition was important. Using VAc as the first monomer could lead to a block copolymer presenting a unimodal GPC trace and a narrow PDI index, and if NVCL was used as the first monomer, the polymerization was less well controlled. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Monodisperse silica particles (SiPs) were surface-modified with a newly designed silane coupling agent comprising a triethoxysilane and an alkyl halide, namely, 6-(triethoxysilyl)hexyl 2-bromopropionate, which was further treated with potassium O-ethyl dithiocarbonate (PEX) to immobilize xanthate molecules on the particle surfaces. Surface-initiated macromolecular design via interchange of xanthates (MADIX) polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) was conducted with the xanthate-functionalized SiPs. The polymerization was well controlled and produced SiPs coated with poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) with a well-defined target molar mass and a graft density of about 0.2 chains nm−2. Dynamic light scattering and TEM measurements revealed that the hybrid particles were highly dispersible in good solvents without any aggregation. The PVAc brushes were hydrolyzed with hydrochloric acid to produce poly(vinyl alcohol) brushes on the SiP surfaces. In addition, the number of xanthate molecules introduced on the SiP surfaces could be successfully controlled by adjusting the concentration of PEX. Thus, the SiPs have two functionalities: xanthates able to act as a MADIX chain-transfer agent and alkyl bromide initiation sites for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). By using these unique bifunctional particles, mixed polymer brushes were constructed on the SiPs by MADIX of VAc followed by ATRP of styrene or methyl methacrylate.  相似文献

Summary: The MADIX/RAFT mechanism, employing a xanthate as the reversible chain‐transfer agent, has been shown to facilitate the living radical polymerization of vinyl acetate in miniemulsion. Methyl (ethoxycarbonothioyl)sulfanyl acetate (MESA) successfully mediated the polymerization which was initiated with either of the water‐soluble initiators 2,2′‐azobis{2‐[1‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)‐2‐imidazolin‐2‐yl]propane} dihydrochloride (VA‐060) or 2,2′‐azobis[2‐(2‐dimidazolin‐2‐yl)propane] dihydrochloride (VA‐044). The polymerizations exhibit living characteristics, demonstrated by the evolution of molecular weight distributions. The formulation of the miniemulsion produced stable latexes with no coagulum.

Amphiphilic supramolecular miktoarm star copolymers linked by ionic bonds with controlled molecular weight and low polydispersity have been successfully synthesized via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using an ion‐bonded macromolecular RAFT agent (macro‐RAFT agent). Firstly, a new tetrafunctional initiator, dimethyl 4,6‐bis(bromomethyl)‐isophthalate, was synthesized and used as an initiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene to form polystyrene (PSt) containing two ester groups at the middle of polymer chain. Then, the ester groups were converted into tertiary amino groups and the ion‐bonded supramolecular macro‐RAFT agent was obtained through the interaction between the tertiary amino group and 2‐dodecylsulfanylthiocarbonylsulfanyl‐2‐methyl propionic acid (DMP). Finally, ion‐bonded amphiphilic miktoarm star copolymer, (PSt)2‐poly(N‐isopropyl‐acrylamide)2, was prepared by RAFT polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) in the presence of the supramolecular macro‐RAFT agent. The polymerization kinetics was investigated and the molecular weight and the architecture of the resulting star polymers were characterized by means of 1H‐NMR, FTIR, and GPC techniques. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of styrene in alcohol/water mixture mediated with the poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) trithiocarbonate macro‐RAFT agent (PNIPAM‐TTC) is studied and compared with the general RAFT dispersion polymerization in the presence of a small molecular RAFT agent. Both the homogeneous/quasi‐homogeneous polymerization before particle nucleation and the heterogeneous polymerization after particle nucleation are involved in the PNIPAM‐TTC‐mediated RAFT polymerization, and the two‐stage increase in the molecular weight (Mn) and nanoparticle size of the synthesized block copolymer is found. In the initial homogeneous/quasi‐homogeneous polymerization, the Mn and nanoparticle size slowly increase with monomer conversion, whereas the Mn and particle size quickly increase in the subsequent heterogeneous RAFT polymerization, which is much different from those in the general RAFT dispersion polymerization. Besides, the PNIPAM‐TTC‐mediated RAFT polymerization runs much faster than the general RAFT dispersion polymerization. This study is anticipated to be helpful to understand the polymer chain extension through RAFT polymerization under dispersion conditions. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
