Symmetric reduction‐responsive amphiphilic comblike copolymers mid‐disulfide‐functionalized comblike copolymers with alternating copolymer comprised of styrenic unit and N‐(2‐hydroxyethyl) maleimide (HEMI) unit (poly(St‐alt‐HEMI)) backbones and alternating PEG and PCL side chains (S‐CP(PEG‐alt‐PCL)) with poly(St‐alt‐HEMI) backbones and alternating poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) side chains were synthesized and used as nanocarriers for in vitro release of doxorubicin. The target copolymers with predetermined molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.15–1.20) were synthesized by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization of vinylbenzyl‐terminated PEG and N‐(2‐hydroxyethyl) maleimide mediated by a disulfide‐functionalized RAFT agent S‐CPDB, and followed by ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone. When compared with linear block copolymer comprised of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) segments (PEG‐b‐PCL) copolymers, comblike copolymers with similar PCL contents usually exhibited decreased crystallization temperature, melting temperature, and degree of crystallinity, indicating the significant influence of copolymer architecture on physicochemical properties. Dynamic light scattering measurements revealed that comblike copolymers were liable to self‐assemble into aggregates involving vesicles and micelles with average diameter in the range of 56–226 nm and particle size distribution ranging between 0.07 and 0.20. In contrast to linear copolymer aggregates, comblike copolymer aggregates with similar compositions were of improved storage stability and enhanced drug‐loading efficiency. In vitro drug release confirmed the disulfide‐linked comblike copolymer aggregates could rapidly release the encapsulated drug when triggered by 10 mM DL ‐dithiothreitol. These reduction‐sensitive, biocompatible, and biodegradable aggregates have a potential as controlled delivery vehicles. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Biodegradable and biocompatible PCL‐g‐PEG amphiphilic graft copolymers were prepared by combination of ROP and “click” chemistry via “graft onto” method under mild conditions. First, chloro‐functionalized poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐Cl) was synthesized by the ring‐opening copolymerization of ε‐caprolactone (CL) and α‐chloro‐ε‐caprolactone (CCL) employing scandium triflate as high‐efficient catalyst with near 100% monomer conversion. Second, the chloro groups of PCL‐Cl were quantitatively converted into azide form by NaN3. Finally, copper(I)‐catalyzed cycloaddition reaction was carried out between azide‐functionalized PCL (PCL‐N3) and alkyne‐terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (A‐PEG) to give PCL‐g‐PEG amphiphilic graft copolymers. The composition and the graft architecture of the copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR, and GPC analyses. These amphiphilic graft copolymers could self‐assemble into sphere‐like aggregates in aqueous solution with diverse diameters, which decreased with the increasing of grafting density. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thermal properties, crystallization, and morphology of amphiphilic poly(D ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(N,N‐dimethylamino‐2‐ethyl methacrylate) (PDLA‐b‐PDMAEMA) and poly (L ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(N,N‐dimethylamino‐2‐ethyl methacrylate) (PLLA‐b‐PDMAEMA) copolymers were studied and compared to those of the corresponding poly(lactide) homopolymers. Additionally, stereocomplexation of these copolymers was studied. The crystallization kinetics of the PLA blocks was retarded by the presence of the PDMAEMA block. The studied copolymers were found to be miscible in the melt and the glassy state. The Avrami theory was able to predict the entire crystallization range of the PLA isothermal overall crystallization. The melting points of PLDA/PLLA and PLA/PLA‐b‐PDMAEMA stereocomplexes were higher than those formed by copolymer mixtures. This indicates that the PDMAEMA block is influencing the stability of the stereocomplex structures. For the low molecular weight samples, the stereocomplexes particles exhibited a conventional disk‐shape structure and, for high molecular weight samples, the particles displayed unusual star‐like shape morphology. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined amphiphilic triblock copolymers, poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)‐b‐poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PEG‐b‐PtBA‐b‐PHEMA), were synthesized via successive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). ATRP of tBA was first initiated by PEG‐Br macroinitiator using CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N′″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as catalytic system to give PEG‐b‐PtBA diblock copolymer. This copolymer was then used as macroinitiator to initiate ATRP of HEMA, which afforded the target triblock copolymer, PEG‐b‐PtBA‐b‐PHEMA. The critical micelle concentrations of obtained amphiphilic triblock copolymers were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy using N‐phenyl‐1‐naphthylamine as probe. The morphology and size of formed aggregates were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering, respectively. Finally, an acid‐sensitive PEG‐b‐PtBA‐b‐P(HEMA‐CAD) prodrug via cis‐aconityl linkage between doxorubicin and hydroxyls of triblock copolymers with a high drug loading content up to 38%, was prepared to preliminarily explore the application of triblock copolymer in drug delivery. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Double hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PEO‐b‐PNIPAM) block copolymers were synthesized via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, using a PEO‐based chain transfer agent (PEO‐CTA). The molecular structures of the copolymers were designed to be asymmetric with a short PEO block and long PNIPAM blocks. Temperature‐induced aggregation behavior of the block copolymers in dilute aqueous solutions was systematically investigated by a combination of static and dynamic light scattering. The effects of copolymer composition, concentration (Cp), and heating rate on the size, aggregation number, and morphology of the aggregates formed at temperatures above the LCST were studied. In slow heating processes, the aggregates formed by the copolymer having the longest PNIPAM block, were found to have the same morphology (spherical “crew‐cut” micelles) within the full range of Cp. Nevertheless, for the copolymer having the shortest PNIPAM block, the morphology of the aggregates showed a great dependence on Cp. Elongation of the aggregates from spherical to ellipsoidal or even cylindrical was observed. Moreover, vesicles were observed at the highest Cp investigated. Fast heating leads to different characteristics of the aggregates, including lower sizes and aggregation numbers, higher densities, and different morphologies. Thermodynamic and kinetic mechanisms were proposed to interpret these observations, including the competition between PNIPAM intrachain collapse and interchain aggregation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Core‐shell structured nanoparticles of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)/polypeptide/poly(D ,L ‐lactide) (PLA) copolymers were prepared and their properties were investigated. The copolymers had a poly(L ‐serine) or poly(L ‐phenylalanine) block as a linker between a hydrophilic PEG and a hydrophobic PLA unit. They formed core‐shell structured nanoparticles, where the polypeptide block resided at the interface between a hydrophilic PEG shell and a hydrophobic PLA core. In the synthesis, poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(L ‐serine) (PEG‐PSER) was prepared by ring opening polymerization of N‐carboxyanhydride of O‐(tert‐butyl)‐L ‐serine and subsequent removal of tert‐butyl groups. Poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(L ‐phenylalanine) (PEG‐PPA) was obtained by ring opening polymerization of N‐carboxyanhydride of L ‐phenylalanine. Methoxy‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐amine with a MW of 5000 was used as an initiator for both polymerizations. The polymerization of D ,L ‐lactide by initiation with PEG‐PSER and PEG‐PPA produced a comb‐like copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐[poly(L ‐serine)‐g‐poly(D ,L ‐lactide)] (PEG‐PSER‐PLA) and a linear copolymer, poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(L ‐phenylalanine)‐b‐poly(D ,L ‐lactide) (PEG‐PPA‐PLA), respectively. The nanoparticles obtained from PEG‐PPA‐PLA showed a negative zeta potential value of ?16.6 mV, while those of PEG‐PSER‐PLA exhibited a positive value of about 19.3 mV. In pH 7.0 phosphate buffer solution at 36 °C, the nanoparticles of PEG/polypeptide/PLA copolymers showed much better stability than those of a linear PEG‐PLA copolymer having a comparable molecular weight. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined amphiphilic A8B4 miktoarm star copolymers with eight poly(ethylene glycol) chains and four poly(ε‐caprolactone) arms (R‐8PEG‐4PCL) were prepared using “click” reaction strategy and controlled ring‐opening polymerization (CROP). First, multi‐functional precursor (R‐8N3‐4OH) with eight azides and four hydroxyls was synthesized based on the derivatization of resorcinarene. Then eight‐PEG‐arm star polymer (R‐8PEG‐4OH) was prepared through “click” reaction of R‐8N3‐4OH with pre‐synthesized alkyne‐terminated monomethyl PEG (mPEG‐A) in the presence of CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″′‐ pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) in DMF. Finally, R‐8PEG‐4OH was used as tetrafunctional macroinitiator to prepare resorcinarene‐centered A8B4 miktoarm star copolymers via CROP of ε‐caprolactone utilizing Sn(Oct)2 as catalyst at 100 °C. These miktoarm star copolymers could self‐assemble into spherical micelles in aqueous solution with resorcinarene moieties on the hydrophobic/hydrophilic interface, and the particle sizes could be controlled by the ratio of PCL to PEG. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A detailed study of the pH‐ and sugar‐responsive behavior of poly(3‐acrylamidophenylboronic acid pinacol ester)‐b‐poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide) (PAPBAE‐b‐PDMA) block copolymers is presented. Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of the pinacol ester of 3‐acrylamidophenylboronic acid resulted in homopolymers with molecular weights between 12,000 and 37,000 g/mol. The resulting homopolymers were employed as macro‐chain transfer agents during the polymerization of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMA). Successful chain extension and removal of the pinacol protecting groups to yield poly(3‐acrylamidophenylboronic acid)‐b‐PDMA (PAPBA‐b‐PDMA) with free boronic acid moieties resulted in pH‐ and sugar‐responsive block copolymers that were subsequently investigated for their behavior in aqueous solution. The PAPBA‐b‐PDMA block copolymers were capable of solution self‐assembly due to the PAPBA block being water‐insoluble below its pKa. The resulting aggregates were demonstrated to solubilize and release model hydrophobic compounds, as demonstrated by fluorescence studies. Dissociation of the aggregates was induced by raising the pH above the pKa of the boronic acid residues or by adding sugars capable of forming boronate esters. Aggregate size, dissociation kinetics, and the effect of various sugars were considered. The critical sugar concentration needed to induce aggregate dissociation was tuned by incorporation of hydrophilic DMA units within the PAPBA responsive segment to yield PDMA‐b‐poly(3‐acrylamidophenylboronic acid‐co‐DMA) block copolymers. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A simple and unique strategy for preparation of large‐compound vesicle (LCV)‐encapsulated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has been developed, and this involves dispersion of MWCNTs in H‐shaped copolymers solution in DMF and encapsulation of MWCNTs with LCVs formed from hydrolysis and polycondensation of ? Si(OCH3)3 groups in the amphiphilic H‐shaped copolymers, (PTMSPMA)2PEG(PTMSPMA)2. This unique noncovalent approach is nondestructive, and the original structure of MWCNTs remains in the resultant MWCNTs/LCVs nanocomposites. The morphologies of nanocomposites LCVs/MWCNTs are controlled by the chain length ratio (NPTMSPMA/NPEG) of PTMSPMA to PEG. For the H‐shaped copolymers with NPMSPMA/NPEG ≤ 1.7, they self‐assembled to form LCVs with dense cavities in the presence of MWCNTs in a mixture of DMF/H2O. When this ratio was more than 2.0, the large‐compound micelle‐wrapped MWCNTs were produced. This approach is potentially useful for preparation of MWCNTs encapsulated with various morphologies of polymers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel AB2‐type amphiphilic block copolymers of poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide), PEG‐b‐(PNIPAM)2, were successfully synthesized through single‐electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP). A difunctional macroinitiator was prepared by esterification of 2,2‐dichloroacetyl chloride with poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEG). The copolymers were obtained via the SET‐LRP of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) with CuCl/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine (Me6TREN) as catalytic system and DMF/H2O (v/v = 3:1) mixture as solvent. The resulting copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR. These block copolymers show controllable molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions (PDI < 1.15). Their phase transition temperatures and the corresponding enthalpy changes in aqueous solution were measured by differential scanning calorimetry. As a result, the phase transition temperature of PEG44b‐(PNIPAM55)2 is similar to that in the case of PEG44b‐PNIPAM110; however, the corresponding enthalpy change is much lower, indicating the significant influence of the macromolecular architecture on the phase transition. This is the first study into the effect of macromolecular architecture on the phase transition using AB2‐type amphiphilic block copolymer composed of PEG and PNIPAM. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis, micelle formation, and bulk properties of semifluorinated amphiphilic poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(pentafluorostyrene)‐g‐cubic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (PEG‐b‐PPFS‐g‐POSS) hybrid copolymers is reported. The synthesis of amphiphilic PEG‐b‐PPFS block copolymers are achieved using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) at 100 °C in trifluorotoluene using modified poly(ethylene glycol) as a macroinitiator. Subsequently, a proportion of the reactive para‐F functionality on the pentafluorostyrene units was replaced with aminopropylisobutyl POSS through aromatic nucleophilic substitution reactions. The products were fully characterized by 1H‐NMR and GPC. The products, PEG‐b‐PPFS and PEG‐b‐PPFS‐g‐POSS, were subsequently self‐assembled in aqueous solutions to form micellar structures. The critical micelle concentrations (cmc) were estimated using two different techniques: fluorescence spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The cmc was found to decrease concomitantly with the number of POSS particles grafted per copolymer chain. The hydrodynamic particle sizes (Rh) of the micelles, calculated from DLS data, increase as the number of POSS molecules grafted per copolymer chain increases. For example, Rh increased from ~60 nm for PEG‐b‐PPFS to ~80 nm for PEG‐b‐PPFS‐g‐POSS25 (25 is the average number of POSS particles grafted copolymer chain). Static light scattering (SLS) data confirm that the formation of larger micelles by higher POSS containing copolymers results from higher aggregation numbers (Nagg), caused by increased hydrophobicity. The Rg/Rh values, where Rg is the radius of gyration calculated from SLS data, are consistent with a spherical particle model having a core‐shell structure. Thermal characterization by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) reveals that the grafted POSS acts as a plasticizer; the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the PPFS block in the copolymer decreases significantly with increasing POSS content. Finally, the rhombohedral crystal structure of POSS in PEG‐b‐PPFS‐g‐POSS was verified by wide angle X‐ray diffraction measurements. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The temperature‐dependent aggregation and recovery of the copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)22b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)29 with a C12 end‐cap in aqueous solutions of salts and acids are investigated. Salt solutions affected the critical aggregation temperature of the copolymer in a manner predictable according to the Hofmeister series, with the kosmotropic adipic ion lowering the critical aggregation temperature and the chaotropic iodide raising it. Also, both salts and acids increased the size of copolymer aggregates formed with heating, due to the electrostatic shielding of aggregated structures provided by the electrolytes. Additionally, the presence of ionic additives caused a thermohysteretic increase in the size of copolymer aggregates with temperature cycling. The transitions of polymer structure with increasing temperature were surprisingly sharp with the C12 end‐cap present, and particularly broad in samples in which the end cap had been cleaved. This observation suggested that the hydrophobic end group was responsible for imparting some degree of order to the polymer at low temperatures, which allowed for rapid reconfiguration with increasing temperature. Finally, in addition to the transitions expected from the least critical solution temperature behavior of the polymer blocks, we have observed an unexpected additional transition which we attribute to the contraction of the poly(ethylene oxide) chains of the copolymer aggregates at higher temperatures. This work illustrates the importance of considering the environment and composition of thermoresponsive block copolymers in certain applications, particularly in solutions with even modest electrolyte concentrations (1–10 mM), as it can have a profound effect on transition temperatures and morphology. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of cysteine‐terminated linear polystyrene (PS)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL)‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/or poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)(PtBA)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) copolymers was carried out using sequential quadruple click reactions including thiol‐ene, copper‐catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), Diels–Alder, and nitroxide radical coupling (NRC) reactions. N‐acetyl‐L ‐cysteine methyl ester was first clicked with α‐allyl‐ω‐azide‐terminated PS via thiol‐ene reaction to create α‐cysteine‐ω‐azide‐terminated PS. Subsequent CuAAC reaction with PCL, followed by the introduction of the PMMA/or PtBA and PEG blocks via Diels–Alder and NRC, respectively, yielded final cysteine‐terminated multiblock copolymers. By 1H NMR spectroscopy, the DPns of the blocks in the final multiblock copolymers were found to be close to those of the related polymer precursors, indicating that highly efficient click reactions occurred for polymer–polymer coupling. Successful quadruple click reactions were also confirmed by gel permeation chromatography. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

A new family of ethylene‐based copolymers with controlled amounts of a norbornene comonomer (NArOH) bearing a stabilizing antioxidant functionality (2,6‐di‐tert‐butyl phenol) was prepared. Due to unavoidable exo/endo equilibrium operative in NArOH comonomer, a complete and detailed NMR assignment of the structure of the prepared ethylene/NArOH copolymers was carried out for the determination of the exo/endo ratio inside the polymer. These novel functionalized comonomers can be considered suitable starting material for preparing ethylene‐based copolymers, with tunable comonomer content, as non‐releasing macromolecular antioxidant additives for specific application in safe food and/or drug packaging © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Aqueous solution properties of amphiphilic P(AA‐cotBA)‐b‐PPO‐b‐ P(AA‐cotBA) copolymers having various tBA contents are presented in this article. These copolymers show pH‐sensitive behavior depending on tBA/AA ratio. Hydrophobic interactions between tBA units leading to pH‐dependent macroscopic aggregates were evidenced by turbidimetry. The aggregation behavior of the PPO middle block was concealed in presence of tBA units. The formation of water‐soluble aggregated objects was characterized by Asymmetrical Flow Field Flow Fractionation (AsF4). By increasing tBA/AA ratio, we observed an increase of aggregates size as well as a reduction of the critical concentration aggregation. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Here, the synthesis and the characterization of novel amphiphilic graft copolymers with tunable properties, useful in obtaining polymeric fluorescent nanoparticles for application in imaging, are described. These copolymers are obtained by chemical conjugation of rhodamine B (RhB) moieties, polylactic acid (PLA), and O‐(2‐aminoethyl)‐O′‐methyl poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on α,β‐poly(N‐2‐hydroxyethyl)‐d,l ‐aspartamide (PHEA). In particular, PHEA is first functionalized with RhB to obtain PHEA–RhB with a derivatization degree in RhB (DDRhB) equal to 0.55 mol%. By varying the reaction conditions, different amounts of PLA are grafted on PHEA–RhB to obtain PHEA‐RhB‐PLA with DDPLA equal to 1.9, 4.0, and 6.2 mol%. Then, PEG chains are grafted on PHEA‐RhB‐PLA derivatives to obtain PHEA‐RhB‐PLA‐PEG graft copolymers. The preparation of polymeric fluorescent nanoparticles with tunable properties and spherical shape is described by using PHEA‐RhB‐PLA‐PEG with DD in PLA and PEG equal to 4.0 and 4.9 mol%, by following easily scaling up processes, such as emulsion‐solvent evaporation and high pressure homogenization (HPH)‐solvent evaporation techniques.

When PEG (M.W.~5000 Daltons) is conjugated to poly(l ‐alanine), the polymer aqueous solutions (<10.0 wt.%) undergo sol‐to‐gel (thermal gelation), whereas it is conjugated to poly(l ‐lactic acid), the polymer aqueous solutions (>30.0 wt.%) undergo gel‐to‐sol (gel melting) as the temperature increases. In the search for molecular origins of such a quite different phase behavior, poly(ethylene glycol)‐poly(l ‐alanine) (PEG‐PA; EG113‐A12) and poly(ethylene glycol)‐poly(l ‐lactic acid) (PEG‐PLA; EG113‐LA12) are synthesized and their aqueous solution behavior is investigated. PEG‐PAs with an α‐helical core assemble into micelles with a broad size distribution, and the dehydration of PEG drives the aggregation of the micelles, leading to thermal gelation, whereas increased molecular motion of the PLA core overwhelms the partial dehydration of PEG, thus gel melting of the PEG‐PLA aqueous solutions occurs. The core‐rigidity of micelles must be one of the key factors in determining whether a polymer aqueous solution undergoes sol‐to‐gel or gel‐to‐sol transition, as the temperature increases. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Linear and four‐armed poly(l ‐lactide)‐block‐poly(d ‐lactide) (PLLA‐b‐PDLA) block copolymers are synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of d ‐lactide on the end hydroxyl of linear and four‐armed PLLA prepolymers. DSC results indicate that the melting temperature and melting enthalpies of poly (lactide) stereocomplex in the copolymers are obviously lower than corresponding linear and four‐armed PLLA/PDLA blends. Compared with the four‐armed PLLA‐b‐PDLA copolymer, the similar linear PLLA‐b‐PDLA shows higher melting temperature (212.3 °C) and larger melting enthalpy (70.6 J g?1). After these copolymers blend with additional neat PLAs, DSC, and WAXD results show that the stereocomplex formation between free PLA molecular chain and enantiomeric PLA block is the major stereocomplex formation. In the linear copolymer/linear PLA blends, the stereocomplex crystallites (sc) as well as homochiral crystallites (hc) form in the copolymer/PLA cast films. However, in the four‐armed copolymer/linear PLA blends, both sc and hc develop in the four‐armed PLLA‐b‐PDLA/PDLA specimen, which means that the stereocomplexation mainly forms between free PDLA molecule and the inside PLLA block, and the outside PDLA block could form some microcrystallites. Although the melting enthalpies of stereocomplexes in the blends are smaller than that of neat copolymers, only two‐thirds of the molecular chains participate in the stereocomplex formation, and the crystallization efficiency strengthens. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel thermo‐responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐block‐poly(l ‐lactide)‐block‐poly(N‐isopropylacylamide) (PNIPAAm‐b‐PLLA‐b‐PNIPAAm) triblock copolymers were successfully prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization of NIPAAm with Br‐PLLA‐Br macroinitiator, using a CuCl/tris(2‐dimethylaminoethyl) amine (Me6TREN) complex as catalyst at 25 °C in a N,N‐dimethylformamide/water mixture. The molecular weight of the copolymers ranges from 18,000 to 38,000 g mol?1, and the dispersity from 1.10 to 1.28. Micelles are formed by self‐assembly of copolymers in aqueous medium at room temperature, as evidenced by 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The critical micelle concentration determined by fluorescence spectroscopy ranges from 0.0077 to 0.016 mg mL?1. 1H NMR analysis in selective solvents confirmed the core‐shell structure of micelles. The copolymers exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) between 32.1 and 32.8 °C. The micelles are spherical in shape with a mean diameter between 31.4 and 83.3 nm, as determined by TEM and DLS. When the temperature is raised above the LCST, micelle size increases at high copolymer concentrations due to aggregation. In contrast, at low copolymer concentrations, decrease of micelle size is observed due to collapse of PNIPAAm chains. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym.
