We report on the growth and characterization of one‐dimensional (1D) planar all‐polymer photonic crystals (PhC) with high dielectric contrast (Δn = 0.3) prepared by spin coating using hyperbranched polyvinylsulfide polymers (HB‐PVS) as high refractive index material and cellulose acetate as low refractive index material. Solution processable HB‐PVS show a near ultraviolet absorption inducing an increased refractive index in the visible‐near infrared (n = 1.68, λ = 1000 nm). HBPVS:Cellulose Acetate Distributed Bragg Reflectors show a very clear fingerprint of the photonic band gap possessing the expected polarized dispersion properties as a function of the incidence angle. Moreover, engineered microcavities tuned on the weak fluorescence spectrum of the HB‐PVS show directional fluorescence enhancement effects due to spectral redistribution of the emission oscillator strength. The combination of all these properties testifies the high optical quality of the obtained photonic structures thus indicating HB‐PVS as an interesting material for the preparation of such PhC. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A method for fabricating infrared‐transmitting waveguides that yields low optical losses and strong confinement of light is presented. The method minimises the number of fabrication steps by exploiting the photosensitivity of arsenic trisulfide glass, using it both as a photoresist and as a waveguiding material. Controlled annealing/remelting of the waveguides minimises scattering due to fluctuations in refractive index at the interface between the waveguide and the surrounding medium, allowing low losses to be realised. Bends and Y‐splitter structures have been realised, as well as the longest As2S3 serpentine planar waveguides yet reported.  相似文献

Nondestructive three‐dimensional refractive‐index measurements are used for the determination of both crystallinity and orientation in thin polymer films. The prism waveguide coupler is particularly suitable for three‐dimensional isotropic and anisotropic thin‐film studies because of the quantitative character of the information obtained and the ease of data acquisition. It has been limited, however, to measuring the refractive index of optically transparent or weakly absorbing films. This study shows that a modified prism waveguide coupler can be used to determine the complex refractive index over a range from transparent to highly absorbing films from the internally reflected light intensity. Thus, both the refractive index, n, and the extinction coefficient, k, can be obtained. This method is used to determine the anisotropic three‐dimensional n and k values of spin‐coated emeraldine base and hydrogen chloride doped emeraldine salt polyaniline films. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this study, we report on the synthesis and characterization of photoreactive polymers bearing N‐acetylcarbazole and N‐formylcarbazole groups, respectively. These polymers were easily accessible by polymer analogous acylation of commercially available poly‐(2‐vinylcarbazole). While poly(1‐(2‐vinyl‐9H‐carbazol‐9‐yl)ethanone) (poly‐ 1 ) undergoes a partial photochemical Fries rearrangement, poly(2‐vinyl‐9H‐carbazole‐9‐carbaldehyde) (poly‐ 2 ) decarbonylates smoothly when exposed to UV irradiation. The difference in reactivity between the two acylated polymers is because of the lower stability of the formyl radical, which is formed in the first stage of this photoreaction. Ellipsometric measurements of thin films showed that the photo‐Fries rearrangement in poly‐ 1 causes a change in refractive index by Δn = +0.01 at 650 nm. UV illumination of poly‐ 2 results in a change of the refractive index by Δn = +0.03 at 650 nm, which can be explained by the high yield of the photodecarbonylation of the N‐formylcarbazole groups. Refractive index patterns can be easily realized using lithographic techniques as demonstrated by optical microscopy using a phase contrast set‐up for visualization. Patterned films of poly‐ 1 and poly‐ 2 with feature sizes of about 5 μm were obtained with a mask aligner. Photoreactive polymers bearing N‐acylcarbazole groups are of potential interest for optical applications such as waveguides, optical switches, and data storage devices. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and its derivatives exhibit strong luminescence, being serious candidates to be used as active layers in organic light‐emitting diodes. However, the structural degradation caused by photo‐oxidation is an obstacle for commercial applications of such materials. Here, we show that spectroscopy ellipsometry is a useful technique to investigate the photo‐oxidation of poly[(2‐methoxy‐5‐hexyloxy)‐p‐phenylenevinylene] (MH‐PPV), a PPV derivative, which emits a red color light. Spectroscopy ellipsometry enables determination of the complex dielectric function—?*(E)—of MH‐PPV thin‐layer films exposed to air, in the 2.1–4.2 eV energy range, as a function of the light exposure time (te). By using the Lorentz model to fit the experimental ?*(E) curves, it was inferred that the interactions among polymeric chains increase with te. From ?*(E), it is also possible to obtain the complex refractive index, N*(E) = n + ik. At higher energies (where k ? n), n increases from 1.32 to 1.40 with the photo‐oxidation progress. The behavior of n was investigated by using the Lorenz–Lorentz equation, taking into account the contribution for n by the chromophores of MH‐PPV. The effect of photo‐oxidation, mainly due to the replacement of vinyl C?C by the ketone C?O bonds, is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared measurements, an effect that reduces the average effective polymer conjugation length. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. High‐refractive‐index aminoalkoxysilane‐capped pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)–titania hybrid optical thin films (TP0–TP8) were synthesized and characterized in this study. They were prepared with PMDA, aminopropyltrimethoxysilane, and titanium(IV) isopropoxide via a sol–gel process followed by spin coating and multistep baking. Through adjustments in the concentration and reaction time, the inorganic content in the hybrid thin films could be as high as 59.1 wt %. The Fourier transform infrared results indicated successful bonding between the organic and inorganic moieties. However, residues of the chelating ligands were found in the hybrids with high titania contents, affecting their thermal and optical properties. Field emission scanning electron microscopy results suggested a nanosized domain of the titania segment in the hybrid materials TP0–TP8. An atomic force microscopy study suggested that the hybrid thin films had good planarization. The dispersions of the refractive index and extinction coefficient in the wavelength range 190–900 nm were studied. The refractive indices of the prepared hybrid thin films at 633 nm increased linearly from 1.567 to 1.780 with increasing titania content. However, the Abbe numbers of the hybrid thin films showed an opposite trend. Three types of bi‐functionalized copolymers ( P1FAz , P2FAz , and P3FAz ) with different numbers of fluorene units and an azobenzene unit were synthesized and characterized using UV–vis and polarized absorption spectroanalysis. The trans‐cis photoisomerization was conformed under 400 nm light irradiation for all copolymers in chloroform. However, in the film state, only the transcis photoisomerization occurred by mono‐fluorene attached copolymer poly[(9,9‐di‐n‐octylfluorenyl‐2,7‐diyl)‐alt‐4,4′‐azobenzene)] ( P1FAz ). Photo‐induced alignment was achieved using the P1FAz film after irradiation with linear polarized 400 nm light and subsequent annealing at 60 °C. Surface orientation of a spin‐coating film of poly(9,9‐didodecylfluorene) ( F12 ) was achieved using the photo‐induced alignment layer of the P1FAz film after annealing at 90 °C. The photo‐induced alignment layer of P1FAz has potential application to the surface orientation technique for appropriate polymers, which will be useful for the fabrication of optoelectronics devices. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A combination of anionic and nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerizations (dual initiator) was employed for the synthesis of poly(n‐hexyl isocyanate‐bN‐vinylpyrrolidone) (PHIC‐b‐PNVP) block copolymers. The samples were characterized with a size exclusion chromatograph equipped with refractive‐index and light scattering detectors as well as 1H NMR spectroscopy. Relatively good control over the molecular weights was achieved. However, rather broad molecular weight distributions were obtained. The micellar properties of the PHIC‐b‐PNVP block copolymers were studied in water, which is a selective solvent for the poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) blocks. Static and dynamic light scattering revealed the presence of equilibrium between the micelles and clusters. Silicate‐based inorganic‐organic hybrid polymer systems have many unique properties including thermal stability and photo‐stability, chemical resistance with the combination of tunable optical properties. Two kinds of new UV‐patternable hybrid materials PSQ‐Ls were synthesized by a sol‐gel process at room temperature, which can be used for low cost fabrication of optical waveguides. Thick films (up to 8.31 µm) can be coated by a single spin‐coating process without any cracking and the average surface roughness (Ra), detected by atomic force microscopy (AFM), is below 0.5 nm. The optical properties (refractive index, birefringence, and optical loss at 1310 nm and 1550 nm, respectively) of the PSQ‐Ls films are investigated by a prism coupler. The refractive index of PSQ‐Ls can be exactly tuned from 1.4483 to 1.5212 by blending PSQ‐LH (nTE=1.5212 @ 1310 nm) and PSQ‐LL (nTE=1.4483 @ 1310 nm). The maximum refractive index contrast is about 4.8%. After post‐baking, birefringences of the films are below 0.0005 and optical losses are about 0.2 dB · cm?1 at 1310 nm, 0.7 dB · cm?1 at 1550 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the PSQ‐Ls films also show outstanding thermal stability in air atmospheres.  相似文献

Candidate materials for low‐loss optical waveguides based on poly(glycidyl methacrylate‐ran‐pentafluostyrene) [P(GMA‐ran‐PFS)] copolymers were synthesized by nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP) initiated with BlocBuilder® [N‐(2‐methylpropyl)‐N‐(1‐diethlphosphono‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl)‐O‐(2‐carboxylprop‐2‐yl) hydroxylamine] bearing a succinimidyl ester group (NHS‐BlocBuilder) at 90 °C in 1,4 dioxane. The copolymerizations yielded copolymers with low dispersity Mw/Mn between 1.2 and 1.4. The core structure of single‐mode channel waveguides was fabricated by direct UV lithographic patterning. The copolymers with low Mw/Mn resulted in line width roughness (LWR) of about 0.16 μm, whereas LWR of copolymers with Mw/Mn=3.5 but similar compositions was about 0.5 μm. The improvement in microstructural control allotted by NMP permitted finer pattern replication for copolymers desired for optical waveguides, as suggested for photoresist polymers. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of highly fluorinated polymers were synthesized by copolymerization of 2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene (PFS) and fluorinated styrene derivate monomer (FSDM). Their chemical structure were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and 19F NMR spectra. The refractive index and cross‐linking density of the polymers can be tuned and controlled by monitoring the feed ratio of comonomers. A series of negative‐type low‐molecular‐weight fluorinated photoresists (NFPs) were prepared by composing of fluorinated polystyrene derivates (FPSDs), diphenyl iodonium salt as a photoacid generator (PAG) and solvent. The polymer films prepared from NFP by photocuring exhibited excellent chemical resistance and thermal stabilities (Td ranged from 230.5 to 258.1 °C). A clear negative pattern was obtained through direct UV exposure and chemical development. For waveguides without upper cladding, the propagation loss of the channel waveguides was measured to be 0.25 dB/cm at 1550 nm. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study reports the synthesis, curing, and optoelectronic properties of a solution‐processable, thermally cross‐linkable electron‐ and hole‐blocking material containing fluorene‐core and three periphery N‐phenyl‐N‐(4‐vinylphenyl)benzeneamine ( FTV ). The FTV exhibited good thermal stability with Td above 478 °C in nitrogen atmosphere. The FTV is readily cross‐linked via terminal vinyl groups by heating at 160 °C for 30 min to obtain homogeneous film with excellent solvent resistance. Multilayer PLED device [ITO/PEDOT:PSS/cured‐ FTV /MEH‐PPV/Ca (50 nm)/Al (100 nm)] was successfully fabricated using solution processed. Inserting cured‐ FTV is between PEDOT:PSS and MEH‐PPV results in simultaneous reduction in hole injection from PEDOT:PSS to MEH‐PPV and blocking in electron transport from MEH‐PPV to anode. The maximum luminance and maximum current efficiency were enhanced from 1810 and 0.27 to 4640 cd/m2 and 1.08 cd/A, respectively, after inserting cured‐ FTV layer. Current results demonstrate that the thermally cross‐linkable FTV enhances not only device efficiency but also film homogeneity after thermal curing. FTV is a promising electron‐ and hole‐blocking material applicable for the fabrication of multilayer PLEDs based on PPV derivatives. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Porous poly(methyl silsesquioxane) (PMSSQ) films were prepared from PMSSQ/amphiphilic block copolymer (ABC) hybrids, and this was followed by spin coating and multistep baking. The ABCs were poly(styrene‐block‐acrylic acid) (PS‐b‐PAA) and poly(styrene‐block‐3‐trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate) (PS‐b‐PMSMA), which were synthesized by living polymerization. The chemical bonding between the ABCs and PMSSQ resulted in significant differences in the morphologies and properties of the hybrids and their porous derivatives. Both intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonding existed in the PMSSQ/PS‐b‐PAA hybrid and led to macrophase separation. Through the modification of the chemical structure from the poly(acrylic acid) segment to PMSMA, covalent bonding between PMSSQ and PMSMA occurred and prevented the macrophase separation and initial pyrolysis of the ABC. Modulated differential scanning calorimetry results also suggested a significant difference in the miscibility of the two hybrid systems. The chemical bonding resulted in higher retardation of the symmetry‐to‐nonsymmetry Si? O? Si structural transformation for PMSSQ/PS‐b‐PMSMA than for PMSSQ/PS‐b‐PAA according to Fourier transform infrared studies. The pore size of the nanoporous thin film from the PMSSQ/PS‐b‐PMSMA hybrid was estimated by transmission electron microscopy to be less than 15 nm. The refractive index and dielectric constant of the prepared porous films decreased from 1.354 to 1.226 and from 2.603 to 1.843 as the PS‐b‐PMSMA loading increased from 0 to 50 wt %, respectively. This study suggests that chemical bonding in hybrid materials plays a significant role in the preparation of low‐dielectric‐constant nanoporous films. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The fabrication of flexible electronics and systems, using rigid and brittle materials directly produced on stretchable substrate, leads to some issues and incompatibilities. These include rigidity for processing and modular flexibility for applications, macroscopic flexibility, and local rigidity to shield components from strain, compatibility with technological steps, and at the same time allowing patterning and machining. The development of smart substrate materials which meet such needs is therefore a promising route for flexible systems. Here, we demonstrate that by mixing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and SU‐8 photoresist, we obtain both a photo‐hardenable and patternable stretchable hybrid material. A set of PDMS/SU‐8 and baking process combinations have been tested to determine an effective photo‐sensitive mixture. A standard photolithographic approach has been used on tensile test samples demonstrating a local hardening of millimeter‐sized ultraviolet exposed features and a local strain reduction reaching 35%. In addition, surface topography analysis and wet‐etching techniques have been used to demonstrate a light‐induced molding process and a selective etching of micrometer‐sized ultraviolet exposed patterns. The combined functional properties of the following material, its simplicity of implementation, and the well‐known assets of PDMS and SU‐8 make the PDMS/SU‐8 material very interesting and promising for various applications, especially stretchable systems. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel crosslinkable, highly fluorinated polyesters were synthesized by copolycondensation reactions of terephthaloyl chloride with 4, 4′‐(hexafluoroisopropy‐lidene)‐diphenol and 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7‐dodecafluoro‐octane‐1,8‐diol, followed by reaction with 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The resulting polyesters with the molecular weights (Mn: 12,100–20,000 g mol?1) and polydispersities (1.49–2.25) were useful for the fabrication of polymer optical devices because of their good solubility in common organic solvent and the processable flexibility. The ratios of the components of the polyesters were characterized by FTIR and NMR. The polyesters had high glass transition temperature (Tg,: up to 170 °C) and good thermal stabilities (Td: up to 470 °C). The refractive index of the polyester film was tuned and controlled in the range of 1.447–1.576 at 1550 nm by monitoring the component fractions during the preparation procedures. Low‐loss optical waveguides were fabricated from the resulting polyesters and the propagation loss of the channel waveguides was measured to be around 0.56 dB/cm at 1550 nm. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel linear carbohydrate‐derived [m,n]‐polyurethanes are successfully prepared using D ‐mannitol as renewable and low cost starting material. The key comonomer, 1,6‐di‐O‐phenylcarbonyl‐2,3,4,5‐tetra‐O‐methyl‐D ‐mannitol is polymerized with a diamine synthesized from D ‐mannitol or with alkylenediamines. These polymerization reactions afford, respectively, a [6,6]‐polyurethane entirely based on a carbohydrate derivative or [m,n]‐polyurethanes constituted by a poly‐O‐methyl substituted unit alternating with a polymethylene chain. All these polymers are stereoregular, as result of the C2 axis of symmetry of mannitol. The optically active polyurethanes are characterized by standard methods (FTIR, RMN, GPC, TGA, and DSC). Thus, GPC analysis reveals weight‐average molecular weights between 18,000 and 25,000 Da. Thermal studies (DSC) indicate that the polymers obtained are amorphous materials with Tg values dependent on the structure and chain length of the diamine constituent. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined ω‐cholesteryl poly(n‐hexyl isocyanate) (PHIC–Chol), as well as diblock copolymers of n‐hexyl isocyanate (HIC) with styrene, PS‐b‐PHIC [PS = polystyrene; PHIC = poly(n‐hexyl isocyanate)], and triblock terpolymers with styrene and isoprene, PS‐b‐PI‐b‐PHIC and PI‐b‐PS‐b‐PHIC (PI = polyisoprene), were synthesized with CpTiCl2(OR) (R = cholesteryl group, PS, or PS‐b‐PI) complexes. The synthetic strategy involved the reaction of the precursor complex CpTiCl3 with cholesterol or the suitable ω‐hydroxy homopolymer or block copolymer, followed by the polymerization of HIC. The ω‐hydroxy polymers were prepared by the anionic polymerization of the corresponding monomers and the reaction of the living chains with ethylene oxide. The reaction sequence was monitored by size exclusion chromatography, and the final products were characterized by size exclusion chromatography (light scattering and refractive‐index detectors), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and, in the case of PHIC–Chol, differential scanning calorimetry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A blue fluorescent polymer based on poly(vinyl carbazole) (PVK) and terfluorene, combined to make a chemical hybrid at the carbazole unit (PVK‐TF), is fully characterized in this study. PVK‐TF shows useful emission features, such as peaks at 400, 420, 437, 460, and 496 nm, depending on the processing conditions. It possesses a relatively high triplet energy level (2.23 eV), electrochemical stability, good film‐forming ability, and morphological stability. Based on this blue fluorescent material, highly efficient orange phosphorescent polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs) were fabricated with a maximum efficiency of 21.99 cd A?1, and a maximum luminance of 19552.3 cd m?2. Single‐layer hybrid white PLEDs were developed, with a high color rendering index of 81.9 that emitted across the whole visible spectrum from 380 to 780 nm, corresponding to the Commission International de L'Eclairage coordinates x, y values of around (0.38, 0.40) and CCT = 3774, with a maximum current efficiency of 10.69 cd A?1, and a maximum brightness of 15723.3 cd m?2. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Optically transparent, mesostructured titanium dioxide thin films were fabricated using an amphiphilic poly(alkylene oxide) block copolymer template in combination with retarded hydrolysis of a titanium isopropoxide precursor. Prior to calcination, the films displayed a stable hexagonal mesophase and high refractive indices (1.5 to 1.6) relative to mesostructured silica (1.43). After calcination, the hexagonal mesophase was retained with surface areas >300 m2 g?1. The dye Rhodamine 6G (commonly used as a laser dye) was incorporated into the copolymer micelle during the templating process. In this way, novel dye‐doped mesostructured titanium dioxide films were synthesised. The copolymer not only directs the film structure, but also provides a solubilizing environment suitable for sustaining a high monomer‐to‐aggregate ratio at elevated dye concentrations. The dye‐doped films displayed optical thresholdlike behaviour characteristic of amplified spontaneous emission. Soft lithography was successfully applied to micropattern the dye‐doped films. These results pave the way for the fabrication and demonstration of novel microlaser structures and other active optical structures. This new, high‐refractive index, mesostructured, dye‐doped material could also find applications in areas such as optical coatings, displays and integrated photonic devices.  相似文献

We synthesized new polynorbornene dicarboximide (PCaNI) functionalized with hole‐transporting carbazole moieties and its copolymer (PCaNA) by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), where the PCaNA was further reacted with 3‐amino‐triethoxysilane to prepare PCaNI/silica hybrid. We also investigated the feasibility of PCaNI and PCaNI/silica hybrid (PCaSi) as a hole‐transporting material for hybrid organic light emitting devices (HOLEDs). To improve the performance of the PCaNI‐based HOLEDs, N,N′‐diphenyl‐N,N′‐(3‐methylphenyl)‐[1,1′‐biphenyl]‐4‐4′‐diamine (TPD) was also introduced into the PCaNI matrix. Results showed that PCaNI exhibited high glass transition temperature (~260 °C) and high optical transparency in the visible region. The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of PCaNI were measured as 5.6 and 2.2 eV, while the TPD‐doped PCaNI showed 5.7 eV (HOMO) and 2.6 eV (LUMO). The PCaNI/silica hybrid nanolayers showed excellent solvent resistance due to the formation of covalent bonds between ITO and PCaNI. The HOLEDs with PCaNI/TPD or PCaSi/TPD hybrid nanolayers exhibited relatively higher luminance (~10,000 cd/m2), lower operating voltage (~6.5 V at 300 cd/m2), and higher current efficiency (~2.7 cd/A). © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
