Structural and morphological behavior under stress–strain of polypropylene/multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (PP/MWCNTs) nanocomposites prepared through ultrasound‐assisted melt extrusion process was studied by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), and wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS). A high ductile behavior was observed in the PP/MWCNT nanocomposites with low concentration of MWCNTs. This was related to an energy‐dissipating mechanism, achieved by the formation of an ordered PP‐CNTs interphase zone and crystal oriented structure in the undeformed samples. Different strain‐induced‐phase transformations were observed by ex situ SAXS/WAXS, characterizing the different stages of structure development during the deformation of PP and PP/MWCNTs nanocomposites. The high concentration of CNTs reduced the strain behavior of PP due to the agglomeration of nanoparticles. A structural pathway relating the deformation‐induced phase transitions and the dissipation energy mechanism in the PP/MWCNTs nanocomposites at low concentration of nanoparticles was proposed. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypropylene random copolymer nanocomposites having 0.2–7.0 vol% multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared via melt processing. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was employed to determine the nano scale dispersion of carbon nanotubes. Linear viscoelastic behavior of these nanocomposites was investigated using parallel plate rheometry. Incorporation of carbon nanotubes in the polymer matrix resulted in higher complex viscosity (η*), storage (G′) and loss modulus (G″) as compared to neat polymer, especially in the low-frequency region, suggesting a change from liquid to solid-like behavior in the nanocomposites. By plotting storage modulus vs. carbon nanotube loading and fitting with a power law function, the rheological percolation threshold in these nanocomposites was observed at a loading of ∼0.27 vol% of MWCNTs. However, electrical percolation threshold was reported at ∼0.19 vol% of MWCNTs loading. The difference in the percolation thresholds is understood in terms of nanotube connectivity with nanotubes and polymer chain required for electrical conductivity and rheological percolation.  相似文献

In this work, nonisothermal melt crystallization and subsequent melting behavior of poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and its nanocomposites at different multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) loadings were investigated. Increasing the MWCNTs loadings has enhanced the nonisothermal melt crystallization of PHB significantly in the nanocomposites when compared with that of the neat PHB; furthermore, increasing the cooling rates shift the crystallization exotherms to low temperature range for both neat PHB and its nanocomposites. Double melting behavior is found for both neat PHB and its nanocomposites crystallized nonisothermally from the melt, which is explained by the melting, recrystallization, and remelting model. Effects of the MWCNTs loadings, cooling rates, and heating rates on the subsequent melting behavior of PHB were studied in detail. It is found that increasing the MWCNTs loadings, decreasing the cooling rates, and increasing the heating rates would restrict the occurrence of the recrystallization of PHB in the nanocomposites. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Bionanocomposites of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate) (P3HB3HHx) (13 % by mol of HHx) with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared to obtain semiconductive nanocomposites for potential applications as scaffolds for nerve repair. The effect of the polymer/nanotube interface on the composite properties was studied using oxidized (oxi‐MWCNTs) and surface modified MWCNTs with low‐molecular weight P3HB3HHx (pol‐MWCNTs), in a ratio from 0.3 to 1.2 wt % for each type of MWCNTs employed. Morphology and conductive properties of the composites indicated a good interaction between pol‐MWCNTs and the polymer matrix. Composites with improved conductivity were obtained with only 0.3 wt % of pol‐MWCNTs added. However, agglomeration and lower conductivity was observed for samples with oxi‐MWCNTs. Cell viability studies carried out with neurospheres showed that samples with 1.2 wt % of pol‐MWCNTs are not cytotoxic and, in addition favors the neurospheres growth on the composite surface. Considering the electrical properties and biological behavior, nanocomposites of P3HB3HHx and pol‐MWCNTs are promising substrates for the regeneration of nerve tissue. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Different mixing processes give rise to significant differences in the agglomeration and deagglomeration of nanoparticles and how they are mixed and distributed within a polymeric matrix. Here poly(caprolactone), PCL, was compounded with carbon nanotubes, CNTs, at a weight fraction of 0.5% (volume fraction, Φ = 0.0027), using both solution and melt processing methods. Microscopy, image analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis, TGA, were used to define and characterize the distributions of the CNT‐rich domain sizes and to obtain quantitative mixing indices at different scales of examination. The presence of the CNTs led to the shear‐induced crystallization of PCL under conditions at which pure PCL would not crystallize and the microstructures obtained upon shear‐induced crystallization were documented via X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and rheological characterization. Shear‐induced crystallization occurred at a faster rate (smaller induction times) when the nanocomposites exhibited greater mixing index values. The shear‐induced crystallization behavior was found to be a more sensitive indicator of the distributive mixing states of the CNTs in comparison with the widely used linear viscoelastic rheological material functions. The demonstrated methodologies can be used as complementary tools for processing and development of nanocomposites to achieve consistent and reproducible microstructures at various scales of examination and functional properties. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were oxidized using four different acid‐treatment methods followed by their functionalization with 3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3‐APTES). Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) nanocomposites with unmodified and silanized MWCNTs (0.2 wt %) were prepared by a cast molding method. The effect of functionalization of MWCNTs on thermal, flexural, and morphological properties of the epoxy nanocomposites were studied. The epoxy/MWCNTs nanocomposites were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, flexural testing, and field emission electron microscopic analysis. The results showed that the silanization of MWCNTs which were oxidized by a two‐step process using nitric acid and hydrochloric acid showed better thermal and flexural properties due to good interfacial adhesion between MWCNTs and the epoxy matrix. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(ethylene terephthalate)/multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (PET/MWCNTs) nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization using different amounts of multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The polymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was carried out by the two‐stage melt polycondensation method. The intrinsic viscosity (IV) of the composites is ranged between 0.31 and 0.63 dL/g depending on the concentration of the MWCNTs. A decrease of IV was found by increasing MWCNTs content. This is due to the reactions taking place between the two components leading to branched and crosslinked macromolecules. These reactions are, mainly, responsible for thermal behavior of nanocomposites. The melting point of the nanocomposites was shifted to slightly higher temperatures by the addition till 0.55 wt % of MWCNTs while for higher concentration was reduced. The degree of crystallinity in all nanocomposites was, also, reduced by increasing MWCNTs amount. However, from crystallization temperature, it was found that MWCNTs till 1 wt % can enhance the crystallization rate of PET, whereas at higher content (2 wt %), the trend is the opposite due to the formation of crosslinked macromolecules. From the extended crystallization analysis, it was proved that MWCNTs act as nucleating agents for PET crystallization. Additionally, the crystallization mechanism due to the existence of MWCNT becomes more complicated because two mechanisms with different activation energies are taking place in the different degrees of crystallization, depending on the percentage of MWCNT. The effect of molecular weight also plays an important role. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 47: 1452–1466, 2009  相似文献

Nonmodified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/sulfonated polyoxadiazole (sPOD) nanocomposites are successfully prepared by a facile solution route. The pristine MWCNTs are dispersed in a sPOD solution, and the mixtures are fabricated into thin films by solution casting. The homogeneous dispersion of nanotubes in the composites is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The mechanical properties, thermal stability, and electrical conductivity are investigated. Tensile strength, elongation at break, and tensile energy to break are shown to increase by more than 28, 45, and 73%, respectively, by incorporating up to 1.0 wt % pristine MWCNTs. The experimental values for sPOD/MWCNTs composite stiffness are compared with Halpin‐Tsai and modified Halpin‐Tsai predictions. The storage modulus is found to increase up to 10% at low CNT loading. The composite films, which have an outstanding thermal stability, show an increase of up to 57 °C in the initial degradation temperature. The addition of 1.0 wt % MWCNTs increases the electrical conductivity of the sPOD matrix by two orders of magnitude. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2010  相似文献

Copper nanowire (CuNWs)/polystyrene (PS) composites were prepared by melt mixing using unfunctionalized and functionalized nanowires. Alkanethiols were utilized to modify the surface of CuNWs postsynthesis and enable their dispersion in a polymer melt. Unfunctionalized nanowires decreased the electrical resistivity of PS by nine orders of magnitude with 2.0 vol % Cu, and resulted in composites with a viscoelastic behavior dominated by polymer–polymer networks indicating that electrical percolation occurred without a transition from liquid‐like to solid‐like behavior (i.e., rheological percolation). Results from transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and melt rheology characterization indicated that surface modification of CuNWs contributed to the dispersion of the nanofiller in the polymer matrix. CuNWs functionalized with 1‐octanethiol and 1‐butanethiol produced rheological percolation and a gradual decrease in the electrical resistivity of the PS nanocomposites with increasing concentration of nanowires. Polymer nanocomposites with low concentrations of functionalized nanowires showed lower complex viscosities than pure PS; this was attributed to a plasticizing effect introduced by the alkanethiols. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on the effect of processing conditions on rheology, thermal and electrical properties of nanocomposites containing 0.02–0.3 wt % multiwall carbon nanotubes in an epoxy resin. The influence of the sonication, the surface functionalization during mixing, as well as the application of external magnetic field (EMF) throughout the curing process was examined. Rheological tests combined with optical microscopy visualization are proved as a very useful methodology to determine the optimal processing conditions for the preparation of the nanocomposites. The Raman spectra provide evidence for more pronounced effect on the functionalized with hardener compositions, particularly by curing upon application of EMF. Different chain morphology of CNTs is created depending of the preparation conditions, which induced different effects on the thermal and electrical properties of the nanocomposites. The thermal degradation peak is significantly shifted towards higher temperatures by increasing the nanotube content, this confirming that even the small amount of carbon nanotubes produces a strong barrier effect for the volatile products during the degradation. The ac conductivity measurements revealed lower values of the percolation threshold (pc) in the range of 0.03–0.05 wt %. CNTs for the nanocomposites produced by preliminary dispersing of nanotubes in the epoxy resin, compared to those prepared by preliminary functionalization of the nanotubes in the amine hardener. This is attributed to the higher viscosity and stronger interfacial interactions of the amine hardener/CNT dispersion which restricts the reorganization of the nanotubes. The application of the EMF does not influence the pc value but the dc conductivity values (σdc) of the nanocomposites increased at about one order of magnitude due to the development of the aforementioned chain structure. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermal conductive and antistatic polyetherimide (PEI) nanocomposites were fabricated by encapsulating non‐destructive amido group functionalized multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into the PEI matrix. Briefly, nearly half of acyl chloride groups in poly (acryloyl chloride) reacted with sodium azide and formed acyl azide groups, which could conjunct with MWCNTs via non‐destruction nitrenes addition reaction. The remaining acyl chloride groups in poly (acryloyl chloride) hydrolyzed into carboxyl groups, therefore COOH‐rich MWCNTs (MWCNTs@azide polyacrylic acid) were synthesized without serious damage to the MWCNTs. Then, MWCNTs@azide polyacrylic acid were then reacted with p‐Phenylene diamine (PPD) and transformed to amido group functionalized MWCNTs (MWCNTs@PPD). MWCNTs@PPD could participate into the in situ polymerization of PEI matrix, where the conjunction between bisphenol A dianhydride and amido groups on MWCNTs@PPD guaranteed the strong covalent bonding at the PEI/MWCNTs interface, which directly avoided the aggregation of MWCNTs. Owing to the non‐destructive modification of MWCNTs and tight matrix/filler interface, the volume electric and thermal conductivity of as‐prepared nanocomposites was up to 6.4 × 10?8 S/cm (1.0 wt%, MWCNTs@PPD) and 0.43 W/(m · K) (4.0 wt%, MWCNTs@PPD), respectively. This article highlights the history, synthetic routes, material properties, and scope of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA)/clay nanocomposites. These nanocomposites of EVAs are achieved with either unmodified or organomodified layered silicates with different methods. The structures of the resulting polymer/inorganic nanocomposites have been characterized with X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The addition of a small amount of clay, typically less than 8 wt %, to the polymer matrix unusually promotes the material properties, such as the mechanical, thermal, and swelling properties, and increases the flame retardancy of these hybrids. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Structure‐property relationships in exfoliated polyisoprene (PI)/clay nanocomposites have been studied as a function of the clay concentration with rheometry, X‐ray diffraction, small‐angle X‐ray scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. The results presented here indicate that the interlayer spacing of layered silicates increases from 2 to at least approximately 14 nm because of the penetration of polymer molecules into the spacing between the silicate layers. The average aspect ratio (width/thickness) of the dispersed nanoplates is also estimated to be at least approximately 80. Additionally, the storage modulus of the nanocomposite exhibits frequency‐independent pseudo‐solidlike behavior above the percolation threshold [volume fraction of clay at the percolation threshold (?p) = 0.02] and shows large enhancements (up to approximately six orders of magnitude) in comparison with the storage modulus of PI when the volume fraction of clay (?) is greater than ?p. For the shear‐aligned PI/clay nanocomposites, an increase in the storage modulus with shear alignment is observed at ? < ?p, whereas a decrease in the storage modulus is observed for ? > ?p. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work aims at investigating the dynamic mechanical properties of in situ anionic ring opening polymerized polyamide 12 in the presence of multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). According to the dynamic mechanical thermal analysis results, the addition of only 0.1 wt.% of MWCNTs led to 30% enhancement in modulus at room temperature which exhibited improved mechanical behavior of the nanocomposites. Test results showed that by the presence of 1.2% wt MWCNTs, the modulus is almost doubled, and it did not show any tangible changes by the addition of more nanotubes. Also, the effect of different frequencies on the viscoelastic behavior was investigated in order to determine the thermal transitions occurred in the synthesized nanocomposites. After that, the crystallinity of the samples has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry and X‐ray diffraction data in order to investigate the effect of MWCNT content on the crystals' dimension.  相似文献

This work describes the preparation and characterization of polypyrrole (PPy)/iron oxide nanocomposites fabricated from monodispersed iron oxide nanoparticles in the crystalline form of magnetite (Fe3O4) and PPy by in situ chemical oxidative polymerization. Two spherical nanoparticles of magnetite, such as 4 and 8 nm, served as cores were first dispersed in an aqueous solution with anionic surfactant sodium bis(2‐ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate to form micelle/magnetite spherical templates that avoid the aggregation of magnetite nanoparticles during the further preparation of nanocomposites. The PPy/magnetite nanocomposites were then synthesized on the surface of the spherical templates. Structural and morphological analysis showed that the fabricated PPy/magnetite nanocomposites are core (magnetite)‐shell (PPy) structures. Morphology of the PPy/magnetite nanocomposites containing monodispersed 4‐nm magnetite nanoparticles shows a remarkable change from spherical to tube‐like structures as the content of nanoparticles increases from 12 to 24 wt %. Conductivities of these PPy/magnetite nanocomposites show significant enhancements when compared with those of PPy without magnetite nanoparticles, in particular the conductivities of 36 wt % PPy/magnetite nanocomposites with 4‐nm magnetite nanoparticles are about six times in magnitude higher than those of PPy without magnetite nanocomposites. These results suggest that the tube‐like structures of 36 wt % PPy/magnetite nanocomposites may be served as conducting network to enhance the conductivity of nanocomposites. The magnetic properties of 24 and 36 wt % PPy/magnetitenanocomposites show ferromagnetic behavior and supermagnetism, respectively. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A simple and unique strategy for preparation of large‐compound vesicle (LCV)‐encapsulated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has been developed, and this involves dispersion of MWCNTs in H‐shaped copolymers solution in DMF and encapsulation of MWCNTs with LCVs formed from hydrolysis and polycondensation of ? Si(OCH3)3 groups in the amphiphilic H‐shaped copolymers, (PTMSPMA)2PEG(PTMSPMA)2. This unique noncovalent approach is nondestructive, and the original structure of MWCNTs remains in the resultant MWCNTs/LCVs nanocomposites. The morphologies of nanocomposites LCVs/MWCNTs are controlled by the chain length ratio (NPTMSPMA/NPEG) of PTMSPMA to PEG. For the H‐shaped copolymers with NPMSPMA/NPEG ≤ 1.7, they self‐assembled to form LCVs with dense cavities in the presence of MWCNTs in a mixture of DMF/H2O. When this ratio was more than 2.0, the large‐compound micelle‐wrapped MWCNTs were produced. This approach is potentially useful for preparation of MWCNTs encapsulated with various morphologies of polymers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A methodology for simple multiscale modeling of mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites has been developed. This methodology consists of three steps: (1) obtaining from molecular dynamics simulations the viscoelastic properties of the bulklike polymer and approximating the position-dependent shear modulus of the interfacial polymer on the basis of the polymer-bead mean-square displacements as a function of the distance from the nanoparticle surface, (2) using bulk- and interfacial-polymer properties obtained from molecular dynamics simulations and performing stress–relaxation simulations of the nanocomposites with material-point-method simulations to extract the nanocomposite viscoelastic properties, and (3) performing direct validation of the average composite viscoelastic properties obtained from material-point-method simulations with those obtained from the molecular dynamics simulations of the nanocomposites. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermal‐processing structure‐property relationships for polyetherimide (PEI), poly(4,4′‐oxydiphenylene pyromellitimide) (POPPI), and phenylethynyl‐terminated imide (PETI‐5) composite matrices are reported from a fundamental perspective. For thermoplastic PEI, deformation and failure depend primarily on free volume as evidenced by moisture‐absorption, mechanical‐property, and mass‐density changes as a function of annealing. The deformation of POPPI can be divided into the following three regimes as a function of annealing temperature: (1) physical aging‐induced glassy state free‐volume decreases, (2) thermally activated microvoid collapse, and (3) chemical degradation. In the case of PETI‐5, macroscopic defects, free volume, and polymer morphology control deformation. The effects of residual crystallinity on deformation are reported, and it is shown that mechanical toughness can be significantly decreased upon annealing below the glass‐transition temperature. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Summary: A facile and organic‐solvent‐free method for preparing thermoprocessable multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)‐filled thermoplastics is presented. MWCNTs are oxidized, neutralized, and then assembled with cationic soap‐free poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles directly in water. The spontaneous electrostatic coupling between the negatively charged MWCNTs and positively charged PMMA particles, and the viscoelastic and thermomechanical behavior of the nanocomposites, are investigated. The electrostatic coupling interactions improve the dispersion of nanotubes and facilitate the formation of filler networks in the polymer matrix.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites were synthesized by the in situ reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of MWCNTs, at which the bulk polymer was grafted onto the surface of nanotubes through the ??grafting through?? strategy. For this purpose, MWCNTs were formerly functionalized with polymerizable MMA groups. MMA and PMMA-grafted MWCNTs were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Dissolution of nanotubes was examined in chloroform solvent and studied by UV?Cvis spectroscopy. Thermogravimetric and degradation behavior of prepared nanocomposites was investigated by TGA. MWCNTs had a noticeable boosting effect on the thermal stability of nanocomposites. TGA thermograms showed a two-step weight loss pattern for the degradation of MWCNT-PMMA/PMMA nanocomposites which is contrast with neat PMMA. Introduction of MWCNTs also improved the dynamic mechanical behavior and electrical conductivity of nanocomposites. TEM micrograph of nanocomposite revealed that the applied methods for functionalization of nanotubes and in situ synthesis of nanocomposites were comparatively successful in dispersing the MWCNTs in PMMA matrix.  相似文献
