Poly[isobutyl methacrylate‐co‐butanediol dimethacrylate‐co‐3‐methacrylylpropylheptaisobutyl‐T8‐polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane] [P(iBMA‐co‐BDMA‐co‐MA‐POSS)] nanocomposites with different crosslink densities and different polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (MA‐POSS) percentages (5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 wt %) were synthesized by radical‐initiated terpolymerization. Linear [P(iBMA‐co‐MA‐POSS)] copolymers were also prepared. The viscoelastic properties and morphologies were studied by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, confocal microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The viscoelastic properties depended on the crosslink density. The dependence of viscoelastic properties on MA‐POSS content at a low BDMA loading (1 wt %) was similar to that of linear P(iBMA‐co‐MA‐POSS) copolymers. P(iBMA‐co‐1 wt % BDMA‐co‐10 wt % MA‐POSS) exhibited the highest dynamic storage modulus (E′) values in the rubbery region of this series. The 30 wt % MA‐POSS nanocomposites with 1 wt % BDMA exhibited the lowest E′. However, the E′ values in the rubbery region for P(iBMA‐co‐3 wt % BDMA‐co‐MA‐POSS) nanocomposites with 15 and 30 wt % MA‐POSS were higher than those of the parent P(iBMA‐co‐3 wt % BDMA) resin. MA‐POSS raised the E′ values of all P(iBMA‐co‐ 5 wt % BDMA‐co‐MA‐POSS) nanocomposites in the rubbery region above those of P(iBMA‐co‐5 wt % BDMA), but MA‐POSS loadings < 15 wt % had little influence on glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) and slightly reduced Tg values with 20 or 30 wt % POSS. Heating history had little influence on viscoelastic properties. No POSS aggregates were observed for the P(iBMA‐co‐1 wt % BDMA‐co‐MA‐POSS) nanocomposites by TEM. POSS‐rich particles with diameters of several micrometers were present in the nanocomposites with 3 or 5 wt % BDMA. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyhedral oligomeric silsequioxane (POSS), having eight hydroxyl groups for the preparation of nanocomposites with polyimide (PI) was synthesized by the direct hydrosilylation of allyl alcohol with octasilsesquioxane (Q8M8H) with platinum divinyltetramethyl disiloxane Pt(dvs) as a catalyst. The structure of allyl alcohol terminated‐POSS (POSS‐OH) was confirmed by FTIR, NMR, and XRD. A high performance, low‐k PI nanocomposite from pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)‐4,4'‐oxydianiline (ODA) polyamic acid cured with POSS‐OH was also successfully synthesized. The incorporation of POSS‐OH into PI matrix reduced dielectric constant of PI without loosing mechanical properties. Furthermore, the effects of POSS‐OH on the morphology and properties of the PI/POSS‐OH nanocomposites were investigated using UV–vis, FTIR, XRD, SEM, AFM, transmission electron microscope (TEM), TGA, and contact angle. The homogeneous dispersion of POSS particles was confirmed by SEM, AFM, and TEM. The nanoindentation showed that the modulus increased upon increasing the concentration of POSS‐OH in PI, whereas the hardness did not increase very much with respect to loading of POSS, due to soft‐interphase around POSS molecules in the resulting nanocomposites. Overall results demonstrated the nanometer‐level integration of the polymer and POSS‐OH. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 5887–5896, 2008  相似文献

Octa(propylglycidyl ether) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OpePOSS) was used to prepare the polybenzoxazine (PBA‐a) nanocomposites containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). The crosslinking reactions involved with the formation of the organic–inorganic networks can be divided into the two types: (1) the ring‐opening polymerization of benzoxazine and (2) the subsequent reaction between the in situ formed phenolic hydroxyls of PBA‐a and the epoxide groups of OpePOSS. The morphology of the nanocomposites was investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the nanocomposites displayed higher glass‐transition temperatures than the control PBA‐a. In the glassy state, the nanocomposites containing less than 30 wt % POSS displayed an enhanced storage modulus, whereas the storage moduli of the nanocomposites containing more than 30 wt % POSS were lower than that of the control PBA‐a. The dynamic mechanical analysis results showed that all the nanocomposites exhibited enhanced storage moduli in the rubbery states, which was ascribed to the two major factors, that is, the nanoreinforcement effect of POSS cages and the additional crosslinking degree resulting from the intercomponent reactions between PBA‐a and OpePOSS. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the nanocomposites displayed improved thermal stability. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1168–1181, 2006  相似文献

Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/silica (PVDF/SiO2) hybrid composite films were prepared via sol–gel reactions from mixtures of PVDF and tetraethoxysilane in dimethylacetamide. Their morphology, crystalline structure, and thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties were examined. For morphology measurements, scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy were applied. X‐ray diffraction and infrared analyses showed that the crystalline structure of PVDF was not changed much by the addition of SiO2, indicating that there was no interaction between PVDF and SiO2. With increasing SiO2 content, the melting temperature rarely changed, the degree of crystallinity and the dielectric constant decreased, and the decomposition temperature slightly increased. A PVDF/SiO2 hybrid composite film with 5 wt % SiO2 exhibited balanced mechanical properties without a severe change in the crystalline structure of PVDF, whereas for the hybrid composites with higher SiO2 contents (>10 wt %), the mechanical properties were reduced, and the spherulite texture of PVDF was significantly disrupted by the presence of SiO2 particles. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Thermally induced polymerization of multifunctional methylmethacrylate POSS (MMA‐POSS) was studied in this work for preparation of polymer/POSS nanocomposites. The polymerization of MMA‐POSS could be promoted with benzoyl peroxide (BPO). Self‐assembly of POSS into a layer‐by‐layer structure in the MMA‐POSS polymer (TP‐MMA‐POSS) is observed with a transmission electron microscopy. An ultra‐low‐k value of about 1.85 is measured with TP‐MMA‐POSS. In addition, polyimide‐POSS nanocomposites are also prepared. These nanocomposites demonstrate good homogeneity and enhanced mechanical properties. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 5157–5166, 2008  相似文献

The mechanical properties and thermal stability of polymers can be enhanced through the formation of nanocomposites. Nanocomposites consisting of hybrid copolymers of methacrylcyclohexyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS‐1) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) with up to 92 wt % (51 mol %) POSS‐1 and with superior thermal properties were synthesized using solution polymerization. The POSS‐1 contents of the copolymers were similar to or slightly higher than those in the feeds, the polydispersity indices were relatively low, and the degree of polymerization decreased with increasing POSS‐1 content. POSS‐1 enhanced the thermal stability, increasing the degradation temperature, reducing the mass loss, and preventing PMMA‐like degradation from propagating along the chain. The mass loss was reduced in a high POSS‐1 content copolymer since the polymerization of POSS‐1 with itself reduced sublimation. Exposure to 450 °C produced cyclohexyl‐POSS‐like remnants in the POSS‐1 monomer and in all the copolymers. The degradation of these remnants, for the copolymers and for the POSS‐1 monomer, yielded 75% SiO2 and an oxidized carbonaceous residue. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thermal properties and morphological development of isothermally crystallized isotactic polypropylene (iPP) blended with nanostructured polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecules at very small loading of POSS were studied with differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, polarized optical microscopy (POM), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). The result of DSC indicated that the crystallization rate of iPP increases with the increase in POSS contents during crystallization; moreover, the melting temperature of iPP/POSS nanocomposites slightly decreases, while the heat of fusion increases with the addition of POSS molecules at melting and remelting traces. The storage modulus and thermal stability, respectively, remarkably decrease, while the glass transition temperature of isothermally crystallized iPP/POSS nanocomposites increases slightly with the increase in POSS contents. The morphologies results of WAXD and POM show that the POSS molecules form about 35 nm sized nanocrystals and aggregate to form thread‐like and network structure morphologies, respectively, in the molten state even when the POSS content is very small. These results, therefore, suggest that the interaction force between the POSS molecules should be larger than the force between POSS molecules and iPP matrix; however, those interactions depend on the chain length of functionalized substituents on the POSS cage. Therefore, the POSS molecules aggregate forming nanocrystals and act as an effective nucleating agent for iPP and influence the thermal properties of iPP/POSS nanocomposites due to the shorter chain length of functionalized substituents, methyl, on the POSS cage. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hybrid organic–inorganic polymer nanocomposites incorporating polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles are of increasing interest for high performance materials applications. Octaisobutyl POSS/polypropylene nanocomposites were prepared at varying POSS concentrations via melt blending. The interplay of POSS molecular geometry, composition, and concentration in relation to the tribological, nanomechanical, surface energy, and bulk properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. Ultra‐low friction and enhanced hardness, modulus, and hydrophobicity were observed for the nanocomposite surfaces, with minimal changes in the bulk thermomechanical properties. Parallel AFM, SEM, TEM, and spectroscopic analyses demonstrated significant differences in POSS distribution and aggregation in the surface and the bulk, with preferential segregation of POSS to the surface. Additionally, contact angle studies reveal significant reduction in surface energy and increase in hysteresis with incorporation of POSS nanoparticles. The differences in bulk and surface properties are largely explained by the gradient concentration of POSS in the polymer matrix, driven by POSS/POSS and POSS/polymer interactions. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The IPI‐POSS‐modified epoxy resin (IPEP) was prepared from isocyanato‐propyldinethylsilyl‐isobutyl‐POSS (IPI‐POSS) and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A epoxy resin. The steric hindrance of the IPEP bulky POSS side chain improved the curing activation energies. The POSS particles sizes were about 2–3 nm and dispersed uniformly. At lower IPEP concentration (POSS < 12 wt %), the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of the IPEP nanocomposites increased from 118 to 170 °C. The char yield increased from 15 to 20 wt %, and the LOI values increased from 22 to 28. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 48: 643–652, 2010  相似文献

Matrix‐polymer‐functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are demonstrated as a highly efficient toughening agent for matrix polymers. With poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as the matrix polymer, the PVDF/MWCNT‐PVDF nanocomposite films show high toughness. With a small load amount of MWCNT‐PVDF (0.07 wt %), the nanocomposite film shows a yield point and a constant‐stress extension region in stress–strain tests, compared with the typical low‐extensibility feature of neat PVDF film. The PVDF/MWCNT‐PVDF‐0.7 film exhibits a 180‐fold increase of toughness and about 38‐fold increase in strain at break compared with neat PVDF film. This toughening effect is attributed to (a) homogeneous dispersion of MWCNT‐PVDF in PVDF, (b) the high efficiency of load‐transfer across MWCNT/PVDF interface, and (c) the long length of the MWCNTs. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on a new strategy for fabricating well‐defined POSS‐based polymeric materials with and without solvent by frontal polymerization (FP) at ambient pressure. First, we functionalize polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). With these functionalized POSS‐containing isocyanate groups, POSS can be easily incorporated into a poly(N‐methylolacrylamide) (PNMA) matrix via FP in situ. Constant velocity FP is observed without significant bulk polymerization. The morphology and thermal properties of POSS‐based hybrid polymers prepared via FP are comparatively investigated on the basis of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Results show that the as‐prepared POSS‐based polymeric materials exhibit a higher glass transition temperature than that of pure PNMA, ascribing to modified POSS well‐dispersed in these hybrid polymers. Also, the products with different microstructures display different thermal properties. The pure PNMA exhibits a featureless morphology, whereas a hierarchical morphology is obtained for the POSS‐based polymeric materials. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the synthesis and characterization of novel elastomeric nanocomposites containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) as both the cross‐linker and filler within a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer matrix. These polymer composites were prepared through the reaction of octasilane‐POSS (OS‐POSS) with vinyl‐terminated PDMS chains using hydrosilylation chemistry. In addition, larger super‐POSS cross‐linkers, consisting of two pendant hepta(isobutyl)POSS molecules attached to a central octasilane‐POSS core, were also used in the fabrication of the PDMS composites. The chemical incorporation of these POSS cross‐linkers into the PDMS network was verified by solid‐state 1H magic angle spinning NMR. Based on dynamic mechanical analysis, the PDMS nanocomposites prepared with the octafunctional OS‐POSS cross‐linker exhibited enhanced mechanical properties relative to polymer systems prepared with the tetrafunctional TDSS cross‐linker at equivalent loading levels. The observed improvements in mechanical properties can be attributed to the increased dimensionality of the POSS cross‐linker. The PDMS elastomers synthesized from the larger super‐POSS molecule showed improved mechanical properties relative to both the TDSS and OS‐POSS composites due to the increased volume‐fraction of POSS filler in the polymer matrix. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biodegradable aliphatic–aromatic copolyester nanohybrids, with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) moieties tethered between poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene terephthalate) segments, is designed and prepared. First, (bis(2‐hydroxyethyl) dipropionate POSS, BH‐POSS) is synthesized under mild conditions, then in situ polycondensation is carried out in the presence of terephthalic acid, PLA oligomer, 1,4‐butanediol, and BH‐POSS. 1 H‐NMR and Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy confirm that Michael addition reaction of amino‐POSS and hydroxyethyl acrylate takes place efficiently and forms BH‐POSS in high yield at room temperature. Owing to similar functional groups, BH‐POSS could be easily incorporated into the macromolecular chains and obtain final copolyester nanohybrids. Moreover, X‐ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy observations demonstrate that POSS moieties occur self‐assembly behaviors and form nanoaggregates with the diameter of 50–100 nm. The thermal stability and mechanical properties of the copolyester nanohybrids containing BH‐POSS are substantially improved. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG) was applied in blend rubber with a heavily limited amount because of its duality of rubber and plastic, and an efficient way of triazolinedione (TAD)‐based Alder‐ene reaction was used to improve the elastic properties of EUG. Binary modification of EUG with two TADs containing hexyl and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) groups were conducted to generate the modified EUG elastomers with tunable mechanical properties and good compatibility by varying TAD contents. When the low hexyl (1%) and POSS (0.2%) TADs incorporated, the modified EUGs displayed high tensile strength of 36.57 MPa with the elongation at break of 876%, and thus high toughness of 152.14 MJ m?3. If high contents of hexyl (20%) and POSS (0.2%) TADs employed, the modified EUGs exhibited excellent elongation at break of 1165% and recovery rate of 60%, and especially its loss factor reached up to 0.83?0.65 at 20?70°C. Therefore, the modified EUGs containing the polar urazole and POSS groups should be a novel elastomer with good compatibility, wear resistance, and damping properties. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyhedral oligosilsequioxane (POSS) tethered aromatic polyamide nanocomposites with various POSS fractions were prepared through Michael addition between maleimide‐containing polyamides and amino‐functionalized POSS. The chemical structures of the polyamide–POSS nanocomposites were characterized with Fourier transform infrared and 1H NMR. The polyamide–POSS nanocomposites exhibited good homogeneity in scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations. POSS modification increased the storage modulus and Young's modulus of the polyamides, slightly decreased their glass‐transition temperatures from 312 to 305 °C, and significantly lowered their dielectric constants from 4.45 to 3.35. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypropylene (PP)/organo‐montmorillonite (Org‐MMT) nanocomposites toughened with maleated styrene‐ethylene‐butylene‐styrene (SEBS‐g‐MA) were prepared via melt compounding. The structure, mechanical properties, and dynamic mechanical properties of PP/SEBS‐g‐MA blends and their nanocomposites were investigated by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), tensile, and impact tests. XRD traces showed that Org‐MMT promoted the formation of β‐phase PP. The degree of crystallinity of PP/SEBS‐g‐MA blends and their nanocomposites were determined from the wide angle X‐ray diffraction via profile fitting method. POM experiments revealed that Org‐MMT particles served as nucleating sites, resulting in a decrease of the spherulite size. The essential work of fracture approach was used to evaluate the tensile fracture toughness of the nanocomposites toughened with elastomer. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Epoxy/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanocomposites were obtained from octakis(glycidyldimethylsiloxy)octasilsesquioxane (OG) and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A cured with small‐molecule curing agents of diethylphosphite (DEP) and dicyandiamide (DICY). An increase in the POSS contents of the nanocomposites and an improvement in the nanocomposite homogeneity were observed with the use of the small‐molecule curing agents. Phosphorus in DEP and nitrogen in DICY also performed synergism with POSS for thermal stability enhancement and flammability improvement in the nanocomposites. The nanocomposites possessing high OG contents exhibited good thermal stability, improved flammability, and high storage moduli. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hybrid organic/inorganic nanocomposites based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanostructured chemicals and nylon 6 were prepared via melt mixing. Two structurally and chemically different POSS molecules, a closed cage, nonpolar octaisobutyl POSS (Oib‐POSS) and an open cage, polar trisilanolphenyl POSS (Tsp‐POSS) with differing predicted solubility parameters were evaluated in the nylon matrix. Surface analysis, including quasi‐static and dynamic nanoindentation and nanotribological techniques, revealed exceptional improvements in modulus and hardness along with significant reductions in friction. Additionally, surface wetting characteristics of the nylon were reversed, with POSS incorporation yielding low surface energy, highly hydrophobic surfaces. AFM, TEM/EDAX, spectroscopic techniques and thermomechanical analysis were used to evaluate nanoscale dispersion and bulk properties of the composites. Both POSS molecules exhibit preferential surface segregation behavior in the nylon matrix. Tsp‐POSS, with its higher predicted solubility in nylon, exhibited enhanced dispersion and tribomechanical properties at both nano and bulk scale. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We synthesized organosoluble, thermoplastic elastomer/clay nanocomposites by making a jelly like solution of ethylene vinyl acetate containing 28% vinyl acetate (EVA‐28) and blending it with organomodified montmorillonite. Sodium montmorillonite (Na+‐MMT) was made organophilic by the intercalation of dodecyl ammonium ions. X‐ray diffraction patterns of Na+‐MMT and its corresponding organomodified dodecyl ammonium ion intercalated montmorillonite (12Me‐MMT) showed an increase in the interlayer spacing from 11.94 to 15.78 Å. However, X‐ray diffraction patterns of the thermoplastic elastomer and its hybrids with organomodified clay contents up to 6 wt % exhibited the disappearance of basal reflection peaks within an angle range of 3–10°, supporting the formation of a delaminated configuration. A hybrid containing 8 wt % 12Me‐MMT revealed a small hump within an angle range of 5–6° because of the aggregation of silicate layers in the EVA‐28 matrix. A transmission electron microscopy image of the same hybrid showed 3–5‐nm 12Me‐MMT particles dispersed in the thermoplastic elastomer matrix; that is, it led to the formation of nanocomposites or molecular‐level composites with a delaminated configuration. The formation of nanocomposites was reflected through the unexpected improvement of thermal and mechanical properties; for example, the tensile strength of a nanocomposite containing only 4 wt % organophilic clay was doubled in comparison with that of pure EVA‐28, and the thermal stability of the same nanocomposite was higher by about 34 °C. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites with three different functionalized‐multiwalled nanotubes (F‐MWNTs) are compared in terms of their thermomechanical properties, morphology, oxygen permeability, and optical transparency. The F‐MWNTs dodecanol‐MWNT, dodecylamine‐MWNT, and 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexafluoro‐2‐phenyl‐2‐propanol‐MWNT were combined with PP to produce hybrid films. The variations of their properties with the matrix polymer F‐MWNT content are discussed. Transmission electron microscopy photographs show that most of the F‐MWNTs are dispersed homogeneously in the matrix polymer on the nanoscale, although some agglomerated F‐MWNT particles are formed. Even composites with low F‐MWNT contents (≤3 wt %) exhibit much better thermomechanical values than pure PP. The gas permeability of the hybrids was found to decrease linearly with increases in the F‐MWNT content of the PP matrix. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2010  相似文献
