By means of a simple warped product construction we obtain examples of submanifolds with nonpositive extrinsic curvature and minimal index of relative nullity in any space form. S.-Y. Cheng, P. Li and S.-T. Yau proved comparison theoremsfor the volume of extrinsic balls in minimal submanifolds ofspace forms. These results were extended by S. Markvorsen forminimal submanifolds of a riemannian manifold with just an upperbound on the sectional curvature. In the paper an isoperimetricinequality for extrinsic balls in minimal submanifolds of ariemannian manifold N with sectional curvatures bounded fromabove by a non-positive constant is found. As a corollary ofthis result an alternative proof is obtained of the comparisonfor the volume of extrinsic balls stated by the preceding authors,but now the equality case is characterized when the upper boundfor the sectional curvatures of the ambient manifold is strictlynegative. Finally, when the sectional curvatures of N are boundedfrom above for any constant (positive or negative), it is provedthat the -isoperimetric quotient of the extrinsic balls is boundedfrom below by the mean curvature of the geodesic spheres inthe m-dimensional real space forms.  相似文献

A decomposition theorem is established for a class of closed Riemannian submanifolds immersed in a space form of the constant sectional curvature. In particular, it is shown that if M has nonnegative sectional curvature and admits a Codazzi tensor with “parallel mean curvature”, then M is locally isometric to a direct product of irreducible factors determined by the spectrum of that tensor. This decomposition is global when M is simply connected, and generalizes what is known for immersed submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector.  相似文献

In the present paper parallel submanifolds and focal points of a given submanifold with flat normal bundle are discussed provided that the ambient space has constant sectional curvature. We present shape operators of parallel submanifolds with respect to arbitrary normal vectors. Furthermore, we prove that the focal points of a submanifold with flat normal bundle form totally geodesic hypersurfaces in the normal submanifolds.Supported by Hungarian Nat. Found. for Sci. We prove that a complete non-compact submanifold in a complete manifold of partially non-negative sectional curvature has only one end if the Sobolev inequality holds on it and if its total curvature is not very big by showing a Liouville theorem for harmonic maps and by using a existence theorem of constant harmonic functions with finite energy. We also generalize a result by Cao–Shen–Zhu saying that a complete orientable stable minimal hypersurface in a Euclidean space has only one end to submanifolds in manifolds of partially non-negative sectional curvature. Some related results about the structure of the same kind of submanifolds are also obtained.  相似文献

An infinitesimal criterion indicating when a two-dimensional submanifold of a Riemannian symmetric space is totally geodesic is given. As an application, the classification of two-dimensional totally geodesic submanifolds of the Grassmannian of bivectors is given in a new way, and it is proved that the sectional curvature takes stationary values on tangent spaces of such submanifolds. We introduce a structural approach to study Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperquadric in arbitrary dimension by using its family of non-integrable almost product structures.In particular,we define local angle functions encoding the geometry of the Lagrangian submanifold at hand.We prove that these functions are constant in the special case that the Lagrangian immersion is the Gauss map of an isoparametric hypersurface of a sphere and give the relation with the constant principal curvatures of the hypersurface.We also use our techniques to classify all minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex hyperquadric which have constant sectional curvatures and all minimal Lagrangian submanifolds for which all local angle functions,respectively all but one,coincide.  相似文献

In this article, we give sufficient conditions for a complete non-compact submanifold in a simply connected manifold of negative sectional curvature to have only one end. We discuss new obstructions to positive sectional curvature and symmetry. The main result asserts that the index of the Dirac operator twisted with the tangent bundle vanishes on a 2-connected manifold of dimension ≠8 if the manifold admits a metric of positive sectional curvature and isometric effective S1-action. The proof relies on the rigidity theorem for elliptic genera and properties of totally geodesic submanifolds.  相似文献

The authors prove a sharp logarithmic Sobolev inequality which holds for compact submanifolds without boundary in Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature of arbitrary dimension and codimension. This paper gives some sufficient conditions for a compact submanifold with nonnegative sectional curvature in a space form to be totally umbilical. In particular, for a compact submanifold M with flat normal bundle, if the scalar curvature is proportional to the mean curvature everywhere, then M is totally umbilical or the Riemannian product of several totally umbilical constantly curved submanifolds.  相似文献
