Two fundamental problems on the invariant holomorphic extensions have been posed, which are naturally arose from our solution of the extended future tube conjecture and closely and deeply related to the general theory of Stein manifolds due to Cartan-Serre. In this paper, the relationship is presented between the two problems, the motivation of considering the problems, and the methods to approach the problems. This paper considers an airline crew allocation and scheduling problem faced by certain divisions of the United States Air Force. Two variants of the problem under consideration were posed to us by the U.S. Air Force. This paper reports our experience with two heuristic methods developed, each applicable to either variant of the problem. Although the problem described herein is peculiar to this situation, the heuristic scheduling and dispatching rules developed have been found to be very effective and are generally applicable in other related contexts of routeing and crew and vehicle scheduling problems as well. The two algorithms developed have been applied to a coded set of real world data. The results indicate that each one of the two methods is preferable to the other for one of the two variants of the problem. This suggests an overall effective composite technique.  相似文献

A negative solution of Problem 188 posed by Max Eidelheit in the Scottish Book concerning superpositions of separately absolutely continuous functions is presented. We discuss here this and some related problems which have also negative solutions. The study describes the kinds of problems posed by pre-service teachers on the basis of complex solid geometry tasks using the “what if not?” strategy and the educational value of such an activity. Twenty-eight pre-service teachers participated in two workshops in which they had to pose problems on the basis of given problems. Analysis of the posed problems revealed a wide range of problems including those containing a change of one of the numerical data to another specific one, to a proof problem. Different kinds of posed problems enlightened some phenomena such as a bigger frequency of posed problems with another numerical value and a lack of posed problems including formal generalization. We also discuss the educational strengths of problem posing in solid geometry using the “what if not?” strategy, which could make the learner rethink the geometrical concepts he uses while creating new problems, make connections between the given and the new concepts and as a result deepen his understanding of them.  相似文献

We study certain boundary value problems for the one-dimensional wave equation posed in a time-dependent domain. The approach we propose is based on a general transform method for solving boundary value problems for integrable nonlinear PDE in two variables, that has been applied extensively to the study of linear parabolic and elliptic equations. Here we analyse the wave equation as a simple illustrative example to discuss the particular features of this method in the context of linear hyperbolic PDEs, which have not been studied before in this framework.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a singularly perturbed elliptic problem with two small parameters posed on the unit square. Its solution may have exponential, parabolic and corner layers. We give a decomposition of the solution into regular and layer components and derive pointwise bounds on the components and their derivatives. The estimates are obtained by the analysis of appropriate problems on unbounded domains.  相似文献

We study the existence of solutions of control problems relative to a nonlinear elliptic system with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In this problem, the control variables are the coefficients of the equations and the open set where they are posed. It is known that this class of problems has no solution in general, but using homogenization results about elliptic systems we show the existence of solutions when the controls are searched in a bigger set. These results are related to the selection of optimal materials and shapes.  相似文献

We study classical solutions of boundary value problems for a nonstrictly hyperbolic third-order equation. The equation is posed in a half-strip and a quadrant of the plane of two independent variables. The Cauchy conditions are posed on the lower boundary of the domain, and the Dirichlet conditions are posed on the lateral boundaries. By using the method of characteristics, we find the analytic form of the solution of considered problems. The uniqueness of the solutions is proved.  相似文献

The problem of reconstructing the characteristic polynomial of a graph of order at least 3 from the collection of characteristic polynomials of its vertex-deleted subgraphs was posed by Cvetkovi? in 1973 as a spectral counter part to the well-known Ulam's reconstruction conjecture. Over the last 50 years, this problem has received notable attention, many positive results have been obtained, but in the general case the problem is still unresolved. In particular, no counter example is found in literature. In this expository paper we survey classical and some more recent results concerning the polynomial reconstruction problem, discuss some related problems, variations and generalizations.  相似文献

This paper addresses two problems in the skein theory of homotopy spheres first posed by P. Traczyk. The main idea of this paper is to utilize the adaptive iterative schemes based on regularization techniques for moderately ill‐posed problems that are obtained by a system of linear two‐dimensional Volterra integral equations with a singular matrix in the leading part. These problems may arise in the modeling of certain heat conduction processes as well as in the dynamic simulation packages such as compressible flow through a plant piping network. Owing to the ill‐posed nature of the first kind Volterra equation that appears in the system, we will focus on the two families of regularization algorithms, ie, the Landweber and Lavrentiev type methods, where we treat both the exact and perturbed data. Our aim is to work directly with the original Volterra equations without any kind of reduction. Two fast iterative algorithms with reasonable computational complexity are developed. Numerical experiments on a few test problems are used to illustrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed iterative methods in comparison with the classical regularization methods.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the stability of functional equations that has its origins with S. M. Ulam, who posed the fundamental problem 60 years ago and with D. H. Hyers, who gave the first significant partial solution in 1941. In particular, during the last two decades, the notion of stability of functional equations has evolved into an area of continuing research from both pure and applied viewpoints. Both classical results and current research are presented in a unified and self-contained fashion. In addition, related problems are investigated. Some of the applications deal with nonlinear equations in Banach spaces and complementarity theory.  相似文献

In the two-agent scheduling with the global objective function to be minimized being the number of tardy jobs and the specified agent’s objective function to be minimized being makespan or maximum lateness, the computational complexities of four problems were posed as open in the literature. We show in this paper that the four problems are binary NP-hard and two of them are solvable in pseudo-polynomial time.  相似文献

Consideration and careful investigation of a simple physical problem in heat transfer shows that even such a problem may not always have solutions and meaningful solutions exist only under restricted conditions. In other words, not all physical problems are well posed. The analysis given here shows that in many practical problems in fluid mechanics and heat transfer the question ‘how well posed is it?’ is non-trivial.  相似文献
