We experimentally demonstrate for the first time the focusing of optical beams within an inhomogeneous dielectric metamaterial with space-variant polarizability, implemented by etching subwavelength structures into a Silicon slab. Light focusing is obtained by creating an artificial slab material with graded refractive index profile. The local refractive index within the slab is modulated by controlling the duty cycle of the subwavelength structures. The demonstrated metamaterial based component can be integrated with various other building blocks towards the realization of devices and systems in free space optics on a chip configuration. 相似文献

A space-variant optical transmission filter is demonstrated for which a simplified process is used to tailor the spatial response of the filter across the surface of a single wafer. A multilayer stack, of alternating high or low refractive index dielectric materials, was used to produce a narrow transmission notch in the center of a wide stop band. Subsequent patterning and etching of arrays of holes through the volume of the dielectric stack was performed to control the fill factor of the dielectric in the layers. The position of the transmission notch within the reflection spectrum was varied across the device surface by adjusting the hole diameter of the hole arrays. Experimental and numerical simulation were used to confirm the space-variant transmission characteristics of a single-wafer sample with two zones of different hole diameter arrays in the 1550 nm wavelength regime. 相似文献

A method employing pulsed illumination for the holographic analysis of vibration with space-variant phase is described. Superimposition
of two stroboscopically recorded interference patterns to get the amplitude and the phase of vibration at the intersections
of fringes is suggested. Contour maps of these two quantities over the entire object surface can then be prepared by interpolation.

A novel method for rapid polarization measurement is suggested. The method is based on a periodic space-variant polarizer that can be realized by use of subwavelength metal-stripe gratings. The Stokes parameters of the incident beam are determined by Fourier analysis of the space-variant intensity transmitted through the grating, thus permitting real-time polarization measurement. We discuss the design and realization of such polarizers and demonstrate our technique with polarization measurements of CO(2)-laser radiation at a wavelength of 10.6mum. 相似文献

Novel devices for converting a linear polarization state to radial or azimuthal polarization states are realized by use of space-variant inhomogeneous media on a subwavelength scale. The two designs presented use form birefringence to locally transform the polarization state. The devices are fabricated in a GaAs substrate for operation in the far-infrared wavelength range. The experimental characterization is in good agreement with the designs, demonstrating high conversion efficiency. 相似文献

A new optical element, a Fresnel axicon (fraxicon), is proposed. Similar to a Fresnel lens, this element consists of concentric prism-like grooves with an apex angle equal to that of a bulk axicon and whose action relies on refraction. The fraxicon is less chromatic and simpler to manufacture than holographic optical element-based diffractive axicons and, in comparison with regular refractive axicons, is more compact with less absorption loss in the material while allowing significant economy in mass production. 相似文献

We report the appearance of a geometrical phase in space-variant polarization-state manipulations. This phase is related to the classic Pancharatnam-Berry phase. We show a method with which to calculate it and experimentally demonstrate its effect, using subwavelength metal stripe space-variant gratings. The experiment is based on a unique grating for converting circularly polarized light at a wavelength of 10.6 mum into an azimuthally polarized beam. Our experimental evidence relies on analysis of far-field images of the resultant polarization. 相似文献

A new class of vectorial vortex based on coherent addition of two orthogonal circularly polarized Bessel beams of identical order but with different propagation constants is presented. The transversely space-variant axially symmetric polarization distributions of these vectorial fields rotate as they propagate, while they maintain a propagation-invariant Bessel intensity distribution. These properties were demonstrated by use of discrete space-variant subwavelength gratings for 10.6 microm CO2 laser radiation. The polarization properties were verified by both full space-variant polarization analysis and measurements. Rotating intensity patterns are also demonstrated by transmitting the vectorial vortices through a linear polarizer. 相似文献

We present a novel method for the formation of a complete depolarizer that is based on a polarization-state scrambling procedure over the space domain. Such an element can be achieved by use of cascaded, computer-generated, space-variant subwavelength dielectric gratings. The method is based on determining the local direction and period of subwavelength metal-stripe gratings by use of vectorial optics to obtain any desired continuous polarization change. We demonstrate our approach with specific computer-generated space-variant polarization elements for laser radiation at 10.6mum. We propose an optical element: a phase-shifted Fresnel axicon for generation of multiple Bessel beams. By giving a binary phase modulation to the standard Fresnel axicon, the proposed element is generated. The phase profile of the binary phase modulation is engineered to generate two and three Bessel beams of equal intensities. This composite optical element is fabricated using electron beam direct writing. The performance of the fabricated device is evaluated using a semiconductor laser, and the generation of two and three Bessel beams is successfully demonstrated. 相似文献

We show that the spin angular momentum (SAM) flux in a space-variant linearly polarized beam can be separated in the focal plane. Such a beam carries only orbital angular momentum (OAM) and develops a net SAM flux upon focusing. The radial splitting of the SAM flux density is mediated by the phase vortex (or OAM) and can be controlled by the topological charge of the phase vortex. Optical trapping experiments verify the separation of the SAM flux density. The proposed approach enriches the manipulation of the angular momentum of light fields and inspires more designs of focus engineering, which would benefit optical micromanipulation of microscopic particles. 相似文献

We present a novel method for forming radially and azimuthally polarized beams by using computer-generated subwavelength dielectric gratings. The elements were deposited upon GaAs substrates and produced beams with a polarization purity of 99.2% at a wavelength of 10.6 microm . We have verified the polarization properties with full space-variant polarization analysis and measurement, and we show that such beams have certain vortexlike properties and that they carry angular momentum. 相似文献

An optical encryption method based on a geometrical phase produced by space-variant polarization manipulation is presented. The decrypted picture is retrieved either by a polarization measurement of the beam emerging from the encrypted element or by a single intensity measurement of the beam transmitted through the encrypted element followed by an optical key element. The X-ray interferometric Fresnel holography was proposed and theoretically investigated. It was shown that under definite conditions the recorded interference pattern formed at the output surface ofthe analyzer crystal (the third block of interferometer) is the X-ray interferometric hologram (generally the Fresnel one) of the object under investigation. Further reconstruction of an image is performed with the help of visible light or a numerical method. As an example the recording of a Fresnel hologram of the simplest case of one-dimensional object, a narrow slit, and the reconstruction of an image by means of visible light were considered. This method may be used in X-ray microscopy and realized using synchrotron sources ofX-ray radiation, as well as X-ray free electron lasers. 相似文献
